Winning successive games on the heels of a six-game skid that seemingly sullied a 5-1 start, the Chicago Bears remain in reach of their 2020 vision of making the NFC playoffs.

Entering a Week 16 visit to the reeling Jacksonville Jaguars, losers of 13 games in a row, the Bears are one game behind the Arizona Cardinals for the final NFC wild card spot.

“We’re excited,” Chicago quarterback Mitchell Trubisky said. “I mean, this is what you play for.”

After navigating offensive struggles for much of the season, the Bears (7-7) have found a resurgence behind a jelling combination on the line that has allowed Trubisky room to operate and created space for running back David Montgomery.

Injuries and inconsistency on the offensive line led coach Matt Nagy to employ six different lineups in the first 10 games. However, in the four games since the Bears have started the combo of Charles Leno at left tackle, Cody Whitehair at left guard, Sam Mustipher at center, Alex Bars at right guard and Germain Ifedi at right tackle, Montgomery has eclipsed 100 yards three times.

The Bears’ highest output in the first 10 games was Montgomery’s 89 yards in Week 8.

“When you watch tape, you see these linemen,” Nagy said. “They’re running to the ball, they’re picking guys up off the ground, they’re celebrating. … So it starts right there and it starts with the belief, and trust then filters down to or moves on to David at running back, to CP (Cordarrelle Patterson) at running back, to Mitchell at quarterback.”

Jacksonville (1-13) has been outscored 71-24 in its past two games while facing AFC playoff contenders Tennessee and Baltimore. In Week 15, the Ravens controlled the line of scrimmage — and most other facets of the game — in building a 26-0 halftime lead en route to a 40-14 home victory.

While Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns, he had only 58 yards through the air in the first half. Meanwhile, the Jaguars offensive line allowed five sacks and running back James Robinson, who is battling ankle issues, rushed for only 35 yards, his second-lowest output of 2020.

“I mean, we were getting one or two yards in the play-action game. We weren’t able to make plays,” Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone said. “Either not pulling the trigger, or not being in good position, or pressure coming — it gets to you. It’s a lot of things. When you don’t play that well … it’s not one thing, it’s everything.”

Marrone said Minshew and veteran Mike Glennon, a former Bear, would compete this week for the starting job, adding some intrigue.

After the New York Jets upset the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15 for their first victory of the season, the Jaguars suddenly gained an inside edge for the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a selection that likely would bring Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence to Jacksonville. The Jaguars have the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker on the Jets.

Nevertheless, Marrone said the Jaguars remain focused on ending the losing streak.

“No one has advised me anything different than to go out there and win,” he said. “I understand, I guess, from a standpoint of I was young growing up, you know, and I had a favorite team and was excited to see where they were going to pick.”

Playoff implications are on the line when the Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season.

Green Bay (12-3) can clinch a first-round bye and the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a win or a tie against the Bears. The Packers, who already have clinched the NFC North, also can get a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if the Seattle Seahawks (11-4) lose or tie against the San Francisco 49ers.

Meanwhile, Chicago (8-7) can clinch an NFC playoff berth with a win over its longtime division nemesis. There are two other pathways for the Bears to secure a postseason spot — if the Arizona Cardinals (8-7) fall short to the Los Angeles Rams (9-6), or if the Bears and Cardinals each finish with tie scores.

Bottom line: Expect a dramatic showdown at Soldier Field when the teams meet for the 202nd time — the NFL’s oldest rivalry. Green Bay leads the series 100-95-6.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur has not had any trouble motivating his players heading into Week 17.

“The guys are dialed in,” he said. “There’s a lot to be motivated about. There’s a lot, obviously, at stake.”

The same is true in Chicago, which has had a roller-coaster season in coach Matt Nagy’s third year. The Bears opened the season with a 5-1 record, then lost six games in a row to fall to 5-7, then won three straight.

Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has played a key role in the late-season turnaround. He was benched for veteran Nick Foles during a Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons, but he reclaimed his starting job in Week 12 and has posted a 99.3 passer rating since then with 1,243 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

“Everything I’ve experienced this season has just made me stronger and a better person and player,” Trubisky said. “Just what I’ve had to deal with and everything we’ve had to overcome as a team, to see where we’re at now, it gives you confidence.

“All the distractions and everything you have to deal with throughout the season and playing within a pandemic, it does make you mentally stronger as a person. And you’re able to deal with a lot more.”

As Green Bay’s defense looks to limit Trubisky — and perhaps more importantly, running back David Montgomery, who has been even more impressive over the past five games — Chicago’s defense will take on a steeper challenge. The Bears must find a way to slow down Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

At age 37, Rodgers is putting up MVP-caliber numbers with 4,059 passing yards, 44 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has a 119.4 passer rating, which leads the league and is the second best of his storied career, trailing only a 122.5 passer rating that he finished with in 2011.

Green Bay won the first meeting this season 41-25 on Nov. 29, as Rodgers passed for 211 yards and four scores at Lambeau Field.

Two teams looking to bounce back from disappointing season openers square off Sunday as the Chicago Bears visit the Denver Broncos. Chicago came out on top on the stat sheet against Green Bay at home but dropped a 10-3 decision while Denver suffered a 24-16 loss in Oakland that was not as close as the scoreboard indicated.

The Bears, who got on the board first, topped the Packers in first downs (16-13) and total yards (254-213) while Mitchell Trubisky (228) threw for more yards than Aaron Rodgers (203). Chicago was unable to establish the run, however, as it totaled 46 yards on 15 carries – with its longest play going for eight yards. Denver was kept off the scoreboard by Oakland in the first half on Monday and was limited to three field goals after intermission before finding the end zone with just over two minutes remaining. Joe Flacco completed 21-of-31 passes for 268 yards in his debut for the Broncos, whose defense allowed the Raiders to go 10-for-14 on third-down attempts.

ABOUT THE BEARS (0-1): Chicago allowed Trubisky to be sacked five times by Green Bay and now faces a defense that features one of the NFL’s top pass rushers in Von Miller, but tackle Charles Leno Jr. is confident in his ability to protect his quarterback this week. “I’m not saying I got a handle (on it),” Leno told reporters. “I’ve still got to go out there and do my job and perform. But going against those guys (Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd) in practice every day. I mean, how much more difficult is it going to get?” Tight end Trey Burton has practiced on a limited basis this week after missing the season opener with a groin injury and hopes to play in Week 2.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS (0-1): Courtland Sutton got off to a good start in his quest to avoid a sophomore jinx as he made seven catches for a game-high 120 yards. “I thought he made some catches in traffic and had strong hands,” Flacco told reporters of the 23-year-old. “I thought he did a good job getting some yardage after the catch also. It wasn’t like he was wide-open, but he’s a big, physical guy that I can feel comfortable throwing the ball to in some of those situations.” Cornerback Bryce Callahan, whose 2018 season ended in Week 14 due to a foot injury, missed this year’s opener with – according to coach Vic Fangio – the “same issue” but was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice.

The Los Angeles Rams are back in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 overall seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, but they face a major road test when they visit the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears on Sunday night. The Rams have won three in a row since their lone loss and will face a Chicago squad that had its five-game winning streak snapped last week.

Los Angeles (11-1) became the first team to clinch a division, wrapping up its second straight NFC West title with a 30-16 victory at the Detroit Lions a week ago. “It’s a great feeling,” Rams quarterback Jared Goff said. “I think it was kind of definitely different than last year. It was a bit more expected this year. It happened earlier on in the year and this is something that we put as a check mark early on in the year, and are able to mark that off now and it feels good.” While the Bears’ stingy defense will be tasked with slowing down Los Angeles’ potent offense, Chicago also will receive a boost with the expected return of starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky from a right shoulder injury that sidelined him for two games. The marquee matchup also will feature the NFL’s two highest-paid defensive players — Bears linebacker Khalil Mack and Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

ABOUT THE RAMS (11-1): Running back Todd Gurley had one of his worst games of the season before the Week 12 bye but he showed fresh legs against Detroit by rushing for 132 yards and putting the game away with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Goff is 246 yards shy of reaching 4,000 for the first time and needs one touchdown pass to match last season’s total of 28 for Los Angeles, which is tied for second in the league with an average of 34.9 points. Wideouts Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks are Goff’s top two targets with 64 and 63 receptions, respectively. The Rams rank in the middle of the pack defensively, but reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Donald is having another monster season with a league-best 16.5 sacks.

ABOUT THE BEARS (8-4): Backup Chase Daniel was intercepted twice and sacked five times in last weekend’s 30-27 loss at the New York Giants, but Trubisky is much more mobile and was not sacked more than twice in his last seven games. Trubisky, who has thrown for more than 300 yards four times but also has failed to surpass 200 in the same number of games, has rushed for at least 43 yards in five of his last seven contests. Jordan Howard heads an inconsistent running game while backfield mate Tarik Cohen leads Chicago in both catches (59) and receiving yards (659). Mack had 9.0 sacks for a defense that faltered against the Giants but ranks second against the run (85.8) and tops the league in interceptions (21) and touchdowns (5).

The Chicago Bears won three division games in a span of 12 days and can take another step toward their first NFC North crown in eight years when they visit the New York Giants on Sunday. A 23-16 victory at Detroit on Thanksgiving was the Bears’ fifth straight win overall, their longest streak since a six-game run in 2012.

They got by in Week 12 with backup Chase Daniel at quarterback and are playing a waiting game on starter Mitchell Trubisky, who was out with a shoulder injury and is considered day-to-day. “It’s going to continue to be one of those day-to-day things with him,” coach Matt Nagy told reporters Wednesday. “I don’t know his exact pain tolerance or level right now. But I definitely think his arrow’s up right now and we’ll just have to kind of keep communicating with him on a day-to-day basis as to where he’s at, how he feels.” The Giants appear to be sticking with veteran Eli Manning under center after he threw for 297 yards and a touchdown in a 25-22 loss at Philadelphia on Sunday. Under fire much of the season as New York careens toward its fifth losing season in the last six, Manning has the best completion percentage of his career (69.1) and is on pace for 4,499 yards, which would represent the second-highest total of his career.

ABOUT THE BEARS (8-3): Daniel completed 27-of-37 passes for 230 yards and two TDs against the Lions after taking limited reps in practice, a scenario the team would be able to avoid this week with the veteran out of Missouri working with the first team all week. “I think that it could definitely help him out,” Nagy told reporters of Daniel having a full week of practice. “If that’s the route we end up going, he’s going to get more reps versus what he went through (last week). That was hard. That was all mental. You go into the game and now we’re expecting guys to be throwing great accurate passes all over the field, and I don’t know if that’s necessarily realistic.” Tarik Cohen tied for the team lead with seven catches and had one TD reception from Daniels, but he was also part of a rushing attack that gained a season-low 38 yards on 15 carries.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (3-8): New York’s game plan has revolved around an effort to limit the damage done by Bears linebacker Kahlil Mack, who made his presence felt against the Giants last year while still a member of the Oakland Raiders, recording a sack, a forced fumble and a recovery. “He’s as good as advertised,” rookie running back Saquon Barkley told the media of Mack. “The only thing I can say is he’s good as advertised. He’s probably the best defensive player in the league. He’s an active player, he’s big, fast, strong. He’s everything you want in an outside linebacker.” Barkley has 294 total yards and five TDs over the last two weeks and enters the week ranked fourth in the NFL with 829 yards on the ground.

The Chicago Bears will play five of their final eight games against their NFC North rivals, and they are assured of beginning that stretch in first place if they can win Sunday at the Buffalo Bills. The Bears got past the New York Jets 24-10 last week to snap a two-game slide and improve to 4-2 since their one and only division game — a one-point loss at Green Bay in Week 1.

Mitchell Trubisky threw for two touchdowns and Jordan Howard ran for another while Chicago’s defense dominated without injured leader Khalil Mack in the win over the Jets. Trubisky has averaged 305.8 passing yards and 58 rushing yards over the past four weeks while accounting for 14 touchdowns, and the 24-year-old ranks second among NFL quarterbacks with 296 yards rushing. While Trubisky has settled in nicely in his second season as a pro, the Bills remain lost at the position and will turn once again to Nathan Peterman, who steps in for his fourth career start with Derek Anderson (concussion) and Josh Allen (elbow) sidelined. Peterman has completed just 13-of-32 passes with one TD and four interceptions this year, performing mop-up duty in Monday’s 25-6 loss to the New England Patriots.

ABOUT THE BEARS (4-3): Mack (ankle) and wide receiver Allen Robinson (groin) both sat out the win over the Jets and are questionable entering this one, while the team is considering placing right guard Kyle Long (foot) on injured reserve. Howard, Trubisky and Tarik Cohen combined for 172 rushing yards last Sunday and Chicago enters the week ranked seventh in the NFL with 137.6 yards on the ground per game. A defense that leads the NFC with 11 interceptions — three by cornerback Kyle Fuller — will be licking its chops against Peterman.

ABOUT THE BILLS (2-6): Buffalo has scored 87 points on the season, its lowest through eight games in franchise history, and being forced to turn back to someone like Peterman as the offense sputters gives the impression of a team going nowhere. “I know we’re getting it turned in the right direction,” coach Sean McDermott told reporters. “We have a vision for this football team — (general manager) Brandon (Beane) and myself. … Sometimes we’re not getting the results necessarily on the scoreboard, and that’s frustrating. I know it’s frustrating for our fan base. But I know we’re doing things that are right, that are going to lead us to that down the road.” The Bills incorporated veteran running back LeSean McCoy into the passing game a bit more against New England and the results (six catches, 82 yards — his best total since 2013) were favorable.

The Chicago Bears have fallen just short in back-to-back losses and hope to have enough to get to the finish line this Sunday when they host the New York Jets. After a three-point overtime loss at Miami on Oct. 14, the Bears went back and forth with the high-powered New England Patriots before falling 38-31, with a Hail Mary completion on the final play leaving them one yard short.

“Coming up one yard short and not tying the game and going to overtime, that’s not good enough anymore,” quarterback Mitchell Trubisky told reporters after the loss in which he was 26-for-50 for 333 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Jets scored 76 points during a two-game winning streak before they were stifled in a 37-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home last week. Rookie Sam Darnold completed only 17-of-42 attempts while throwing a season-high three interceptions and getting sacked three times. “He tries to get better and learn from his mistakes,” New York head coach Todd Bowles told reporters of Darnold’s mindset after the rocky performance. “He studies. And he works to get better every day. So attitude-wise, he’s been great.”

ABOUT THE JETS (3-4): The locker room received a bit of a blow when the team announced that running back Bilal Powell, who ranks second with 343 rushing yards, was to undergo season-ending neck surgery that could end the career of the longest-tenured Jet. “It’s one of the toughest things,” nose tackle Steve McLendon told reporters. “It almost makes me emotional because I know how hard he worked. … This is how a lot of guys feed their family, and you never want to see someone lose that ability.” The team will lean a little more on leading rusher Isaiah Crowell, but he has been hampered by a foot injury since his franchise-record 219 yards against Denver in Week 5 and had just 29 yards on 11 carries last week.

ABOUT THE BEARS (3-3): A Chicago defense that dominated in a 3-1 start has given up nearly 1,000 total yards and 44 first downs during the two-game slide, a trend it hopes to reverse against the 21-year-old Darnold. “As a rookie, we want to make him make a mistake,” safety Eddie Jackson told the Chicago Sun Times. “We’re going to send pressure at him and hopefully get some turnovers.” Star linebacker Khalil Mack had five sacks and four forced fumbles though the first four games but has zero in both categories over the last two contests as he deals with an ankle issue that has limited him in practice this week.

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS (4-2): The return of Julian Edelman from suspension and the addition of fellow wide receiver Josh Gordon via trade has provided a boost for quarterback Tom Brady, who has thrown for 681 yards over the past two games. “As a football player, you always want to play against the best players at a position,” Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd said. “It definitely adds fuel to the fire going against Tom Brady.” Rookie running back Sony Michel has added balance to the offense by rushing for 316 yards and three touchdowns during the three-game winning streak. New England’s defense was gashed by the Chiefs and ranks 21st against the pass (268.7 yards per game).

ABOUT THE BEARS (4-2): After three pedestrian efforts to open the season, Trubisky has put together two stellar back-to-back performances by passing for 670 yards with nine touchdowns and one interception while completing over 71 percent of his passes in each. Running back Jordan Howard has received 25 carries over the past two weeks but third-down back Tarik Cohen has emerged as a weapon with 14 receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns in that span. Wide receiver Allen Robinson (groin) and star pass rusher Khalil Mack (ankle) each sat out practice again Thursday. Mack’s absence would be a huge blow for a defense that has 18 sacks, 10 interceptions and nine forced fumbles.

OVERTIME

1. Brady has won all four meetings against Chicago, throwing for 1,318 yards with 11 TDs versus three interceptions.

2. Mack, who has never missed a regular-season game, has five sacks and four forced fumbles in five games this season.

3. Patriots RB James White has 37 catches and four receiving touchdowns this season.
