Time off for Patrick Mahomes has not equated to time away from football.

He practiced for the Kansas City Chiefs. He cheered teammates on while sitting out the last regular-season game. And then last week, with the bye that goes to the top seed in the AFC playoffs, Mahomes scouted opponents.

He will rely on what he learned about the Cleveland Browns, who will be coming off an explosive 48-37 upset of Pittsburgh in the wild-card round, which elevated them into the divisional round Sunday at Kansas City, Mo.

“I had a day’s worth of film on the Browns,” said Mahomes, “so whenever we found that out, I was able to look back at that and look at my notes and see how it presents to us.”

Despite sitting out the Jan. 3 setback to the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes helped engineer a 14-2 season for Kansas City while passing for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns. He will square off against Baker Mayfield as they reprise their old Big 12 shootouts.

“To be able to play against him on this stage is going to be special,” Mahomes said. “I mean, he went to Oklahoma, I went to Texas Tech, so he got the better of me in college, so I’ll try to do my best to win in the NFL.”

Mahomes knows he has the weapons to accomplish that feat, especially after the Chiefs scored at least 31 points in each of their postseason wins a year ago. Travis Kelce, who set an NFL record for tight ends with 1,416 receiving yards, also sat out the defeat against the Chargers, which snapped a 10-game Chiefs’ winning streak.

“Everybody kind of locks in a little bit more and gets excited to play when the playoffs come around, especially in this building, especially (Mahomes) himself,” Kelce said.

The same could be said of the Browns after claiming their first playoff win since 1994.

Cleveland should regain several players off the reserve/COVID-19 list — Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio was removed Friday — while coach Kevin Stefanski returned to practice on Thursday after his own stint with the virus.

“We’re looking forward to getting a full complement of guys,” Stefanski said. “Anytime you get good players back, whether it be injury or COVID list, it’s always a big boost for your entire team.”

Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson have been activated and will provide depth to a secondary that grabbed four interceptions against Pittsburgh. Receiver KhaDarel Hodge was also taken off coronavirus protocols.

Mayfield will again look to execute a balanced attack, which also features the rushing tandem of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.

Hunt will have some additional motivation playing against the Chiefs. They cut Hunt during the 2018 season after video surfaced of him kicking a woman. Kansas City selected Hunt in the third round of the 2017 draft. He then led the NFL with 1,327 rushing yards as a rookie.

Another Browns connection who can point to his time with the Chiefs is general manager John Dorsey, who was around when Andy Reid took over as Kansas City coach and traded up to take Mahomes in the 2017 draft after already drafting the likes of Kelce and Tyreek Hill.

Dorsey was eventually fired by the Browns in late 2019.

“He did a nice job here and there of bringing the right people in,” Reid said.

The Chiefs ruled out receiver Sammy Watkins (calf) and linebacker Willie Gay (ankle) on Friday. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle) was listed as questionable.

The Browns listed four players as questionable: offensive tackle Jack Conklin (hamstring/knee), linebacker B.J. Goodson (shoulder), and tight ends David Njoku (hamstring) and Stephen Carlson (groin).

Technically, it’s not a must-win game for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular-season finale.

The Browns (10-5) can still slink into the playoffs with a loss, provided the right combination of other teams lose and/or win. But Cleveland isn’t viewing another showdown with the Steelers (12-3) in such a light.

“We’ve got to come ready to play like it’s a playoff game,” said Cleveland running back Kareem Hunt.

With a win, Cleveland is in. Pittsburgh already knows it will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the postseason, which led to Mike Tomlin declaring this week that Ben Roethlisberger will get the week off. Backup Mason Rudolph will get his first start of the year.

The move adds more intrigue to the matchup. Last year, Cleveland broke a five-year non-winning streak against Pittsburgh in Cleveland with a 21-7 victory on Nov. 14, 2019. But in the closing moments, defensive end Myles Garret ripped off Rudolph’s helmet and swung it at the quarterback to spark an on-field brawl.

The incident led Garrett to be suspended for the final six games of last season. Garrett, who had 10 sacks through 10 games last season before the suspension, has 44 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 12 sacks this year.

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski isn’t concerned about that subplot. Rudolph, who has just four passing attempts and 20 offensive snaps all season, had seven plays on the field during Pittsburgh’s 38-7 rout of the Browns in Week 6 this season.

“We talk about maintaining our composure in every single game, it’s nothing new this week,” Stefanski said. “We’ve got to make sure that we’re keeping the main thing (in mind) and focusing on our work.”

Tomlin said the Garrett/Rudolph issue is a non-starter for him.

“That is so far in our rearview mirror that we can’t see it,” he said.

Cleveland has more pressing issues to address. The team temporarily closed its facility again on Wednesday following more positive COVID-19 tests within the organization.

On Tuesday, the team put tight end Harrison Bryant and safeties Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Last Sunday, in a 23-16 loss to the New York Jets, the Browns played without their top four wide receivers, who were forced to sit out of the game because of contact tracing. The Browns are hopeful the receiving corps, including leader Jarvis Landry (789 yards), will be able to return against the Steelers.

Stefanski said Wednesday that rookie offensive tackle Jedrick Wills would return this week from a non-COVID-related illness, but the Browns weren’t sure when he will practice. Starting right guard Wyatt Teller (ankle) was also expected to be available after missing the last two games.

“We have to do everything in our power to win this week,” Stefanski said.

Pittsburgh rallied from a 17-point deficit last week to beat the Indianapolis Colts and lock up a playoff spot. The win snapped a three-game losing skid.

Pittsburgh secures the No. 2 seed with a win and a loss or tie by the Bills (12-3) against the Dolphins (10-5), but without a bye within reach, Tomlin said his team might benefit more by resting key players. He hasn’t said who, beyond Roethlisberger, will sit or for how long, but vowed the Steelers will play to win.

If the Bills and Steelers finish with identical records, Buffalo would receive the higher seed since the Bills defeated the Steelers, 26-15, on Dec. 13.

“The standard is the standard,” Tomlin said. “Our job is to win football games.”

The Cleveland Browns can take a huge step toward ending the NFL’s longest active playoff appearance drought on Sunday with a win against the New York Jets in East Rutherford, N.J.

Cleveland (10-4) can lock up a playoff spot in the AFC with a win over the Jets, and a loss by any of three other AFC contenders: Baltimore, Miami or Indianapolis.

In addition, Cleveland sits just a game back of the suddenly slumping Steelers (11-3) in the AFC North and will host their biggest rivals in Week 17.

The Browns haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, and the 10-win season is the team’s first since 2007. But first-year coach Kevin Stefanski said no one in the organization is looking past the Jets (1-13).

“Not for me,” Stefanski quipped when asked if his one-week-at-a-time approach will be tested more than usual this week. “This is the NFL. It’s not hard for me to explain what we’re in for.

“We know what we’re getting into.”

New York shocked the league last week with a 23-20 upset win at the Los Angeles Rams. Sam Darnold was solid, throwing for 207 yards and a touchdown while the Jets enjoyed a rare turnover-free day.

“It’s the greatest feeling in sports,” Darnold said after the Jets’ win.

But the victory came with consequences. The win moved New York out of the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft and, presumably, the right to snag Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Instead, the Jets are currently slotted with the No. 2 pick behind the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If that wasn’t enough to dull the positive vibes from the team’s first win of 2020, the club added standout defensive lineman Quinnen Williams (neck/concussion) and inside linebacker Harvey Langi (neck) to the Injured/Reserve list this week, effectively ending the season for both.

And Wednesday, the Jets placed tight end Ryan Griffin on the COVID-19/Reserve list.

“We’re running thin, those practice squad guys will get an opportunity this week,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “We’ve got to put some pieces together.”

It’s not a task Gase and midseason replacement defensive coordinator Frank Bush will relish with a red-hot Cleveland offense coming in. The Browns rank third in the NFL in rushing offense (152.6 yards per game) and Baker Mayfield has stitched together a month of high-level play.

In Cleveland’s last four games, Mayfield is averaging 308 passing yards, with 10 touchdowns and one interception. The Browns have won four of their past five.

“(Mayfield) has been the same guy, every single day,” Stefanski said.

And while the Browns are plotting potential playoff scenarios, the Jets are pondering what could be a turbulent offseason. New York has to make a decision on Darnold, who’s about to enter the fourth year of his rookie contract, and that’s been complicated with losing the rights to draft Lawrence.

Gase, under contract for two more years, is also on the hot seat and may not be around for the next stage of the Jets’ rebuild, yet he claims he’s not feeling any added pressure. Gase said Wednesday he hasn’t had any discussions with CEO Christopher Johnson about his future in New York.

“Nothing I’m really worried about,” Gase said.

The Browns could be without two starters on Sunday as right guard Wyatt Teller (ankle) and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (neck) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Stefanski expected Richardson to be available, however, and the defense did see safety Andrew Sendejo (concussion) return to full practice.

Cleveland also designated a return from IR for safety Ronnie Harrison (shoulder), who has been out since Nov. 29.

Besides Williams, Langi, and Griffin, the Jets were missing cornerback Javelin Guidry (knee) from practice on Wednesday.

“I’ve got to do better,” he said.

Scared he jeopardized his NFL career when police found a small amount of marijuana in the Browns running back’s car during a traffic stop, Hunt, who served an eight-game league suspension last season for two physical altercations while with Kansas City, said Monday that he’s grateful the Browns have stood by him.

“I’m blessed that the Browns gave me another opportunity,” Hunt said on a Zoom conference call. “So, yes, I’m lucky to have another opportunity to play football. You never know. Honestly, I’m just blessed to play the game, so I’ll always feel lucky to play football.

“I know any second it can be gone.”

When he was pulled over in January, Hunt told a Rocky River Police officer that the incident could ruin him if it became public. During a search, police also found an open container of vodka in a backpack on the back seat.

Hunt was only cited for speeding, but he admitted to the officer he would have failed a league drug test at the time.

Days later, Hunt received a strong reprimand from Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, who said the actions “were not acceptable.” The team also pledged to keep working with the 24-year-old, who had been disciplined by Commissioner Roger Goodell for shoving and kicking a woman during an argument in a hotel hallway while he played for the Chiefs.

The Browns signed the Cleveland-area native before last season and Hunt stayed clear of trouble while also undergoing counseling.

He said the misstep this off-season was inexcusable.

“I would say that was out of character,” he said. “I learned from it, I’ve been working to become a better person each and every day. Definitely not looking for anything like that to happen again. I’ve been working. Now I’m just focused on football, working out and getting ready for this season.

“I’ve got to do better. Shouldn’t have done it. Ready to move on from that and focus on football.”

The Browns are counting on it.

They see Hunt as a valuable and versatile piece to their offense. Hunt has been “cross-training” during the club’s virtual off-season program, attending meetings with both the running backs and wide receivers as he learns new coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense.

But his top priority is acting more professionally off the field, and Hunt said Stefanski and Andrew Berry, the club’s executive vice president of football operations, have made it clear to him that they won’t tolerate bad behavior.

“I’ve got to be smarter and cannot be doing stuff like that,” Hunt said. “We had a good talk. They see me on the field as a guy who is going to make some plays this year and help the team win. That is what I have been looking forward to. We have been talking. I keep in touch with coach all the time about what he wants to see.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunt said he’s been working out and “staying low key.”

“I have been pretty much hanging with the family,” he said. “Talking to my close people, going out there working, doing stuff in the community, helping people out. It has been a crazy time in the world. Everybody has to try to be the best person they can be right now.”

The Browns, who are looking to bounce back after falling far short of expectations in 2019, signed Hunt to a one-year tender in March. They see him as a perfect complement to star running back Nick Chubb, and Hunt would like nothing more than to earn a long-term contract with Cleveland.

“I think we can do something special here,” he said. “I want to get that Super Bowl feeling and I believe we can do it here in my hometown. That would be bigger than anything, for me. I would definitely like to be a part of something like this. Everybody is here I care about. I know everybody in the whole town. I would not mind playing for the Browns for a long time.”

Smith was surrounded by most of his Browns teammates Wednesday, hours after the popular defensive end watched helplessly as his girlfriend was killed in a horrific accident as they were driving home.

The Browns’ bond has stretched beyond the field for Smith.

”That’s a brother in our locker room,” safety Morgan Burnett said. ”Some things, it’s deeper than football. This is a brotherhood in this locker room and we’re going to be there to support our brother by any means. It’s deeper than football.”

Early Wednesday morning, Petara Cordero, who gave birth to the couple’s daughter last month, was struck by a car as she stood on a highway roadside. Smith told police a tire on his Lamborghini blew out and caused his car to spin and crash on I-90 West of Cleveland. The 26-year-old Cordero exited the vehicle and she was stuck by an oncoming car driven by a woman who admitted to police she had been drinking.

No charges have been filed, and toxicology reports are pending.

The police said Smith was not impaired or injured.

The loss has rocked the Browns.

”Chris is one of those guys – his smile is infectious, his personality is infectious,” coach Freddie Kitchens said Thursday. ”He’s just overall well-liked. Of course, everybody in that locker room’s hurting for him.”

As the Browns prepared to play the New York Jets on Monday night, many of the players expressed condolences for Smith as well as Cordero’s family.

”That was a real punch in the gut,” left guard Joel Bitonio said. ”The whole team is thinking about him every chance we get. That’s one of our brothers. To be in that situation, I couldn’t put myself in that situation.”

Bitonio and his wife recently welcomed a baby girl, making Smith’s situation harder to process.

”I can’t put it into words,” Bitonio said. ”It’s hard for me to truly accept and understand what’s going on for him. I just know how tough it would be for me to be in that situation right now. I’m just really, really praying for him.”

Kitchens said the tragedy has weighed heavily on him.

”Chris is on my mind right now. His family’s on my mind. Her family’s on my mind,” Kitchens said. ”The four-week-old baby is on my mind. It’s a difficult time, but we’re going to get through it, there’s never going to be an excuse. We’re going to get through it, I promise you that, but we’re going to get through it together. Chris is included in that, his family’s included in that.”

Kitchens visited Smith at his home on Wednesday. The 27-year-old, who also played in Cincinnati and Jacksonville, is in Cleveland’s defensive rotation, but Kitchens doesn’t know when he’ll be back on the field.

”I have not even given one thought about that and I don’t want Chris to even think about that,” Kitchens said. ”I told him yesterday, this is beyond this. We can make it whatever we want to.”

Expectations for the Cleveland Browns are the highest they have been in decades after a promising finish to 2018 and a strong offseason. The Browns will begin trying to live up to those expectations when they host the Tennessee Titans in the season opener on Sunday.

Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield is trying to follow up a stellar rookie campaign and has plenty of weapons at his disposal with star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. joining the team in the offseason and combining with Jarvis Landry on the outside and Nick Chubb in the backfield. “Nobody has done anything yet, so I would say everybody is starting from the same square one,” Mayfield told reporters. “I would say it is pretty hard to live up to any hype if you are listening to the outside. None of that really matters, so I think we have a bunch of guys who have bought in to what is going on in this building and the standards we are setting. To us, that is all that matters.” The Titans won four straight games to put themselves in position to compete for a playoff spot last season before dropping the season finale to the Indianapolis Colts and missing out by one game. Starting quarterback Marcus Mariota missed that meeting with the Colts with an injury and is focused on staying healthy as he nears a potential contract extension, but the team brought in veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill to serve as the backup just in case the injury bug strikes.

ABOUT THE TITANS (2018: 9-7, THIRD IN AFC SOUTH): Mariota has yet to start 16 games in a season and totaled 24 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions over the last two campaigns. “I have been dinged, I have been banged up, and I understand that,” Mariota told reporters. “I just have to do my job to be available for this team and hopefully throughout the year that will happen.” Tennessee made several moves in an effort to upgrade the protection around Mariota, giving a $44 million contract to free agent left guard Rodger Saffold and drafting guard Nate Davis in the third round.

The Denver Broncos’ disheartening setback in their last outing not only ended their promising three-game winning streak, it also positioned them one game behind four others in the mad dash for the sixth and final seed in the AFC playoffs. The Broncos bid to dust themselves off and post their 12th consecutive win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday night when the clubs meet in Denver.

“Our record right now, we’re still in it, and every game now is a must-win. We haven’t talked about that, but we have to now: Every game that we play is a must-win,” coach Vance Joseph said of his Denver team that dropped a 20-14 decision at San Francisco on Sunday to reside behind Baltimore (7-6), Miami (7-6), Indianapolis (7-6) and Tennessee (7-6).
