Technically, it’s not a must-win game for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular-season finale.

The Browns (10-5) can still slink into the playoffs with a loss, provided the right combination of other teams lose and/or win. But Cleveland isn’t viewing another showdown with the Steelers (12-3) in such a light.

“We’ve got to come ready to play like it’s a playoff game,” said Cleveland running back Kareem Hunt.

With a win, Cleveland is in. Pittsburgh already knows it will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the postseason, which led to Mike Tomlin declaring this week that Ben Roethlisberger will get the week off. Backup Mason Rudolph will get his first start of the year.

The move adds more intrigue to the matchup. Last year, Cleveland broke a five-year non-winning streak against Pittsburgh in Cleveland with a 21-7 victory on Nov. 14, 2019. But in the closing moments, defensive end Myles Garret ripped off Rudolph’s helmet and swung it at the quarterback to spark an on-field brawl.

The incident led Garrett to be suspended for the final six games of last season. Garrett, who had 10 sacks through 10 games last season before the suspension, has 44 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 12 sacks this year.

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski isn’t concerned about that subplot. Rudolph, who has just four passing attempts and 20 offensive snaps all season, had seven plays on the field during Pittsburgh’s 38-7 rout of the Browns in Week 6 this season.

“We talk about maintaining our composure in every single game, it’s nothing new this week,” Stefanski said. “We’ve got to make sure that we’re keeping the main thing (in mind) and focusing on our work.”

Tomlin said the Garrett/Rudolph issue is a non-starter for him.

“That is so far in our rearview mirror that we can’t see it,” he said.

Cleveland has more pressing issues to address. The team temporarily closed its facility again on Wednesday following more positive COVID-19 tests within the organization.

On Tuesday, the team put tight end Harrison Bryant and safeties Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Last Sunday, in a 23-16 loss to the New York Jets, the Browns played without their top four wide receivers, who were forced to sit out of the game because of contact tracing. The Browns are hopeful the receiving corps, including leader Jarvis Landry (789 yards), will be able to return against the Steelers.

Stefanski said Wednesday that rookie offensive tackle Jedrick Wills would return this week from a non-COVID-related illness, but the Browns weren’t sure when he will practice. Starting right guard Wyatt Teller (ankle) was also expected to be available after missing the last two games.

“We have to do everything in our power to win this week,” Stefanski said.

Pittsburgh rallied from a 17-point deficit last week to beat the Indianapolis Colts and lock up a playoff spot. The win snapped a three-game losing skid.

Pittsburgh secures the No. 2 seed with a win and a loss or tie by the Bills (12-3) against the Dolphins (10-5), but without a bye within reach, Tomlin said his team might benefit more by resting key players. He hasn’t said who, beyond Roethlisberger, will sit or for how long, but vowed the Steelers will play to win.

If the Bills and Steelers finish with identical records, Buffalo would receive the higher seed since the Bills defeated the Steelers, 26-15, on Dec. 13.

“The standard is the standard,” Tomlin said. “Our job is to win football games.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts have been moving in opposite directions lately yet will have plenty in common Sunday when they meet at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field.

The 11-3 Steelers have clinched a spot in the playoffs, due to their 11-0 start, but have lost three in a row and need one more victory to secure the AFC North title.

The 10-4 Colts have won three consecutive and seven of their past nine, with their own spot in the playoffs pending a victory, coupled with a loss by Miami or Baltimore this weekend.

Pittsburgh was the last undefeated team by several weeks, but the three-game losing streak, all by fewer than 20 points, has brought with it a good deal of unrest.

Fingers have been pointing toward the offense, and specifically quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger has heard the questions and the criticisms. He doesn’t or can’t throw downfield anymore; he gets rid of the ball too quickly; he doesn’t see open receivers; at 38 he’s nearing the end. TO that, he offered a succinct response.

“I don’t blame them,” he said. “When you play like poo, you should get talked about like that. I need to play better. If I’m not giving them a reason to talk good, then I’m giving them a reason to talk badly. That’s all on me. I need to play better.”

Roethlisberger gave barely a glancing measure of blame at the rest of the offense.

“We all need to perform better, and it starts with me,” he said. “I have to complete passes, if that’s the call. If it’s run, then we have to get hats on hats, if you will. Once again … if I had an answer to it, we wouldn’t be having these issues. We can’t fix anything until we get out there on Sunday, really.”

Roethlisberger revealed that the Steelers had a players meeting Wednesday that was heavy on the offensive side but insisted “it had nothing to do with the losses. It had everything to do with where we are, and where we’re going. It wasn’t a players-only panic meeting.”

Defensive tackle Cam Heyward agreed that Pittsburgh isn’t panicking.

“It’s a three-game losing streak, but that’s coming off an 11-game winning streak,” Heyward said. “I’m looking forward to getting back on this horse.”

The game matches Roethlisberger and a fellow veteran in Indianapolis quarterback Philip Rivers.

“The similarities are they’ve both been incredibly durable. They’ve both been incredibly productive,” Colts coach Frank Reich said. “They’ve been incredibly effective in the pocket.”

That’s just one storyline.

“These are the games you dream about — going to Pittsburgh in December with something on the line,” Rivers said.

It doesn’t matter to Indianapolis what each team has done lately.

“When you go on the road this late in the season and in this means of a game, it’s going to take a complete team effort,” Reich said.

Steelers linebacker Vince Williams was reinstated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, which could give a boost to a position that has been in flux in terms of personnel availability.

In addition, running back James Conner (quadriceps) practiced Wednesday after missing a game. However, tight end Eric Ebron (back), defensive end Stephon Tuitt (back) and linebackers Marcus Allen (stinger), Ulysees Gilbert III (ankle), and Ola Adeniyi (shoulder) didn’t practice.

For Indianapolis, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (ankle) didn’t practice Wednesday, but that was considered precautionary after he returned from that injury last weekend.

Also sitting out practice were tackle Anthony Castonzo (knee) and receiver Marcus Johnson (quadriceps), along with Rivers, who simply is following his regular routine, Reich said.

Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger engaged in a high-octane shootout the last time they shared the field, so there is no telling what may happen when the Seattle Seahawks visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Wilson passed for 345 yards and five touchdowns in the 39-30 home win during the 2015 season while Roethlisberger passed for 456 yards but just one score.

Roethlisberger and his teammates got off to a poor start in Week 1 as they were shellacked 33-3 by New England in their first game without departed receiver Antonio Brown. “I am only going to focus on the quarterback play, and the quarterback has to get better,” Roethlisberger, who passed for 276 yards and one interception, told reporters. “We didn’t execute well enough. I didn’t make enough plays, enough throws and they outscored us. … Half the teams lost their first game. Guys realize what Week 1 was, and now we are going into Week 2.” Seattle posted a 21-20 victory over Cincinnati, but it wasn’t pretty as the club was outgained 429-233. “We played from behind the whole day and those guys never stopped,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters. “They never stopped thinking we were going to win the football game, and that’s so valuable to us.”

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (1-0): Wilson was 14-of-20 for 196 yards and two scores in the opener while defensive end Quinton Jefferson, a Pittsburgh native, fueled the defense with a career-best two sacks. Star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney recorded two tackles and a sack during his team debut and is working on assimilating himself into the unit after recently being acquired from Houston. “He’s been great attitude-wise,” Carroll said at a press conference. “His mentality has been great. He’s been upbeat, positive and he’s been trying to stay out of the limelight. He’s being very humble, that has been his approach. … He’s really happy about being here.”

ABOUT THE STEELERS (0-1): Pittsburgh never got untracked against the Patriots and running back James Conner was a non-factor with 21 yards on 10 carries. Wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster is the new primary target with Brown gone, and he had six receptions for 78 yards while newcomer Donte Moncrief was a big disappointment with three catches for seven yards while being targeted a team-high 10 times. Rookie linebacker Devin Bush stood out with 11 tackles in his debut, but the unit recorded only one sack — from linebacker Bud Dupree — and didn’t force a turnover.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Seahawks hold a 9-8 regular-season edge, but the Steelers have won two of the last three meetings.

The speedy inside linebacker already made a significant impact in the preseason opener, a 30-28 home victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday night.

”I was less concerned with his productivity and more concerned about his demeanor, and I really liked his demeanor,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. ”He was present. It wasn’t too big for him. He handled the communication responsibilities associated with his job. He was alert and those were good signs.”

Bush played 40 snaps in one half of play and finished with 10 tackles, including seven solo. He had six tackles in the first quarter alone, including four solo.

”I was just feeling it, and having fun,” Bush said. ”I think that’s the biggest thing, I was just having fun and playing football again.”

It was the first substantial in-game action for the 5-foot-11, 234-pound Bush since he wrapped up a three-year All-American career at Michigan. The Steelers made a rare, aggressive moved and traded up to select Bush with the No. 10 overall pick in the first round.

They felt it was necessary to acquire a do-everything difference maker in the middle of their defense with Ryan Shazier’s career in jeopardy as he recovers from spinal surgery. It was the first time the Steelers traded up in the first round since 2003.

Bush didn’t disappoint in his first time out with the Steelers.

”I think the biggest thing was that it wasn’t practice anymore and I got the chance to play in a game-like setting and compete against another team,” Bush said. ”I just love to make plays. I love to play football.”

Bush made his presence felt with a tackle on his first play of the game. He had four total tackles on Tampa Bay’s 12-play, 81-yard touchdown drive.

On the Bucs’ second offensive possession, Bush nearly had an interception. He jumped a short route and came away with a pass breakup on third-and-five.

”My arm kind of got stuck,” Bush said. ”I couldn’t get it up in time and by that time the ball was already in my face. It happened so fast. I didn’t get my hands up in time and it hit my facemask.”

Bush had his pass breakup on third down, but the drive continued because of a roughing the passer call. He later put an end to the series on fourth-and-1 from the Steelers 17. Bush shot through a hole in the offensive line and pursued Andre Ellington in the backfield, combining with Ola Adeniyi for the key fourth-down stop.

”Fourth down came, they went for it, and I just took a shot,” Bush said. ”If you want to make a play bad enough, you’ll do anything in your power to do it. It’s definitely a gift.”

Bush’s athleticism has been evident, but teammates regularly point to the mental aspect of the rookie’s game.

”His above-the-neck game is beyond his years right now,” outside linebacker Bud Dupree said. ”He’s making all the calls, and we’re making him make the calls so he doesn’t’ get lackadaisical with us making the calls. He’s the guy on the inside now, so he has to make sure he’s on top of that.”

Bush was happy with how he called the plays Friday against Tampa Bay.

”I think I was pretty vocal,” Bush said. ”I haven’t done that since college. It felt good to get out there and do it again.”

It was a learning experience for the rookie, who was pleased with his performance, but not overly satisfied.

”I did decent, I did alright,” Bush said. ”I think the (interception) would’ve made it a lot better. But I’ve got a lot more to work on.”

The team said Drake, who joined the coaching staff in 2018, died early Sunday morning.

”Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said. ”He was a passionate coach and had a tremendous spirit toward life, his family, his faith and the game of football.”

Drake, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, played collegiately at Western Kentucky. He spent one season in the Canadian Football League and participated in a pair of NFL training camps before returning to Western Kentucky to pursue a master’s degree. He went into coaching as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky in 1983, the beginning of a career that included stops in the college ranks at Georgia, Baylor and Texas.

”He had a tremendous impact on those who he coached and those who were fortunate to call him a teammate,” WKU athletic director Todd Stewart said. ”WKU Football was better because of our association with him.

Drake reached the NFL as a receivers coach in 2004 with the Chicago Bears. He moved on to the same position with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 before joining Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s staff in 2018. Drake’s pupils through the years include Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald, longtime NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall and Antonio Brown, who played for Drake in 2018 before being traded to Oakland last spring.

”I’m heartbroken for anyone who had the privilege to know Darryl,” Fitzgerald tweeted. ”As a man, a coach, a husband, and a father, he was as good as they come.”

The Steelers brought in Drake last summer to work with a young receiving corps that included JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington.

”Darryl was a close friend and had a tremendous impact on my coaching career,” Tomlin said. ”He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather, and it is difficult to put into words the grief our entire team is going through right now. Darryl loved the game of football and every player he ever coached. We will use our faith to guide us and help his family throughout the difficult time.”

Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens, who coached alongside Drake in Arizona, called Drake ”a really good coach and an even better friend.”

”The NFL coaching community lost a really good person that always took a great personal interest in the lives of the players he coached and the staff he worked with,” Kitchens added.

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, who played under Drake in Chicago, tweeted that Drake ”had a huge impact on me as a young player. His players loved him.”

Drake is survived by his wife, Sheila, daughters Shanice, Felisha and Marian as well as two grandchildren.

Pittsburgh cancelled practices at Saint Vincent College on both Sunday and Monday after announcing Drake’s death.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ biggest fear has become reality, and they hope to overcome the obstacle and avoid a third straight loss when they visit the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. James Conner, who has filled in admirably as Pittsburgh’s top running back this season, will miss the contest due to a sprained ankle – forcing the team to use a two-man approach.

Conner, who is fifth in the league with 909 rushing yards and is tied for fourth with 13 overall touchdowns, became the Steelers’ feature back after Le’Veon Bell sat out the first half of the season before electing to remain home for the entire year. With the 23-year-old Conner sidelined, Pittsburgh figures to make both Stevan Ridley and rookie Jaylen Samuels part of the rushing attack this week. While the Steelers look to maintain their slim lead in the AFC North, the Raiders enter the contest even with San Francisco in the race for the first overall pick in next year’s draft. Oakland came up empty at home last week as it came out on the wrong side of a 40-33 decision against conference-leading Kansas City.

ABOUT THE STEELERS (7-4-1): Antonio Brown can make NFL history on Sunday with a repeat performance from last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The 30-year-old receiver made 10 catches in the setback and can pass Wes Welker (672 receptions from 2007-12) for the most by a player over a six-year span with another double-digit total. Ben Roethlisberger hopes to pad his numbers against Oakland as he leads the NFL with 3,945 passing yards and ranks second with 341 completions.

ABOUT THE RAIDERS (2-10): Oakland has continued to make multiple changes to its roster this week in order to find the right fit, signing running back C.J. The Baltimore Ravens’ once-impenetrable defense is beginning to show some cracks, sending the team tumbling down the standings. The Ravens will try to avoid a three-game slide and jump back into the race in the AFC North when they host the rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Baltimore was torched for a season-high 36 points in a 15-point loss at the Carolina Panthers last week after dropping a 24-23 home decision to the New Orleans Saints. “It’s apparent that two weeks in a row we weren’t very sharp,” defensive tackle Michael Pierce told reporters. “For whatever reason that is, that’s got to get corrected ASAP. We got Pittsburgh coming up. It’s personal pride. You have to man up to what everybody’s doing and see what’s going on.” The Steelers are trending in the opposite direction with wins in three straight games since a 26-14 home loss to the Ravens in Week 4, and running back James Conner is leading the charge. Conner is making fans forget about Le’Veon Bell by piling up a total of 526 yards and six touchdowns in the last three contests.

ABOUT THE STEELERS (4-2-1): Bell, who is holding out after refusing to sign his franchise tender, is expected to return before Week 10 but has given little indication of when that return might come, leaving Conner to grab all the touches available. “He wants to be that guy,” guard Ramon Foster told reporters of Conner. “He plays with a passion that’s out of this world.” Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is completing 67.7 percent of his passes during the winning streak but will play with a fractured left (non-throwing) index finger this week after suffering the injury in the 33-18 drubbing of the Cleveland Browns last week.

ABOUT THE RAVENS (4-4): Baltimore slid into third place in the AFC North behind Pittsburgh and Cincinnati (5-3) with the loss to the Panthers and knows it faces an uphill climb. “We are obviously not in the most ideal situation possible, but we still have eight games left,” quarterback Joe Flacco told reporters. “I feel like we have the opportunity to play really good football. We just have to make sure to keep the focus on that. I think there is obviously a bigger threat now to let this stuff affect you mentally, let it affect the team and how we are gelling together. We just have to combat that just by being ourselves and being as tough as we possibly can.” The Ravens are 24th in the league with an average of 96.6 rushing yards and made a move to improve that area by trading for Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

ABOUT THE BROWNS (2-4-1): Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson pledged to get more involved in the offense after watching it struggle over the last several games, but that doesn’t mean he’s lost faith in offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who used to hold the same position with the Steelers. “I have total confidence in Todd and what the staff is doing,” Jackson told reporters. “In those situations, for me like I said after the game – fuming like I was after losing – I had a chance to sit back and see it all. I just wanted to make sure that as an offense we were crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s and making sure that everything is moving in the right direction.” The Browns enter the week tied for 23rd in the NFL in scoring average at 21.6 points.

ABOUT THE STEELERS (3-2-1): Pittsburgh continues to sing the praises of running back James Conner, who is taking over Bell’s spot as the team’s top rusher. “It’s always the next man up, man,” center Maurkice Pouncey told reporters. “We always live by that code here, being a Steeler; and (Conner’s) doing a great job with it. He’s excelling at a high rate, and guys on the team are loving it.” Conner rushed for a season-high 135 yards and two TDs at Cleveland in Week 1, but quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was intercepted three times.
