The Seattle Seahawks have already clinched their first NFC West title since 2016.

But they still have something to play for in Week 17 when they meet the coronavirus-displaced San Francisco 49ers (6-9) on Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Ariz.

The Seahawks (11-4) can still earn the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye with a victory and a loss by Green Bay (12-3) at Chicago (8-7) and a loss or tie by New Orleans (11-4) tie at Carolina (5-10).

Of course, the odds of all those scenarios happening are slim — FiveThirtyEight.com puts the Seahawks chances of getting the No. 1 seed at 4 percent — but there’s still a possibility.

Which is all Seahawks coach Pete Carroll needs to hear.

“We’re going for it, and we would love to have that break (the bye in the wild-card round) for players if we can get it,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks captured the division title with a 20-9 victory against the Los Angeles Rams last weekend, as Russell Wilson threw for one touchdown, rushed for another and the defense limited the visitors to three field goals.

“I don’t want to break that mentality at all,” Carroll said. “We want to stay right with it and keep pushing and trying to get better. … This is a championship opportunity to put ourselves in the best situation going into the playoffs.”

Through the first half of the season, Wilson carried the Seahawks and the defense was on pace to shatter the NFL record for most yards allowed in a season.

But over the past seven games, the Seahawks are allowing an average of just 15 points, best in the league, are tied for first in sacks (24) and are third in total defense.

“We figured it out,” Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright said. “Guys are just starting to be accountable, we’re communicating like no other. To hear the other guys’ voices each and every play is truly special.”

Added safety Jamal Adams: “For everybody out there, they got to start putting respect on this defense’s name, because this defense is playing lights out.”

The injury-plagued 49ers, the defending NFC champions, have shown a willingness to play the role of spoiler. Behind third-string quarterback C.J. Beathard, the 49ers dealt Arizona’s playoff chances a blow with a 20-12 victory last weekend.

Beathard completed 13 of 22 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and Jeff Wilson rushed for a career-high 183 yards and made a 21-yard touchdown reception.

“That’s why I’ve been real proud of the players and the way they’ve handled themselves,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “That’s why I’m truly not going to count this year as a negative. It wasn’t fun. It’s not what we or our fans wanted. But I believe the way we went through it, if you go through things the right way, I think it hardens you and makes you stronger and makes you better.”

The Seahawks beat San Francisco 37-27 on Nov. 1 in Seattle. Nick Mullens replaced an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and guided the 49ers to three touchdowns in the final five minutes.

Shanahan said he doesn’t expect Garoppolo (ankle) to return this week. Wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk (ankle) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring), left tackle Trent Williams (elbow), defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) and cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) have already been ruled out. Kicker Robbie Gould was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Seahawks are relatively healthy, with cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) expected to return from the injured reserve list and right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle) is likely to play.

The San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals meet up at a familiar setting when the NFC West rivals duel on Saturday afternoon in Glendale, Ariz.

The rematch of a 24-20 Arizona win in Week 1 has far more significance for the Cardinals (8-6), who remain in the running for an NFC playoff spot, than the 49ers (5-9), whose bid to repeat as conference champs officially ended with last week’s loss at Dallas.

Both teams will be playing on the State Farm Stadium field for the third time in the last four weeks, with the 49ers having been forced to relocate from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., because of COVID-19 restrictions in the region.

The 49ers have lost their first two neutral-site games in Arizona, beaten in Week 13 by Buffalo 34-24 and then a week later by Washington 23-15.

The 49ers were thumped 41-33 at Dallas last week, and lost far more than just a game that eliminated them from playoff contention. Top running back Raheem Mostert has been ruled out for the season after aggravating a high ankle sprain in the loss, while quarterback Nick Mullens suffered an elbow injury that the 49ers fear could require Tommy John surgery.

Regular starter Jimmy Garoppolo has returned to practice after suffering an ankle injury against Seattle in Week 8, but San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan noted that he’s unlikely to get medical clearance to return to game action either this week or in the finale against Seattle, another game that will be played in Arizona.

“(He will play) only if the doctors told me it’s 100 percent safe and he feels good, and I’d be very surprised if that happens,” Shanahan reported. “Right now, he’s safe to go out to practice. It’ll be fun for him to throw the ball around a little bit, but we’re going to be very safe with him this week and we’ll see next week. But I’d be very surprised if that changes.”

Shanahan wouldn’t name a starter for the Arizona game as the practice week began, but by process of elimination, the last man standing appears to be C.J. Beathard, who came on in mop-up duty in Dallas and threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne on the final play of the game.

The 49ers have since gone out and plucked veteran Josh Rosen off the Tampa Bay practice squad to serve as Beathard’s backup.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, will take the field in third place in the NFC West, two games behind Seattle (10-4) and one back of the Los Angeles Rams (9-5). Arizona visits the Rams next week.

The Cardinals can clinch a wild card this weekend with a win over the 49ers and a Chicago (7-7) loss to Jacksonville (1-13).

Kyler Murray kept Arizona in a favorable position when he threw for a season-best 406 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 33-26 home win over Philadelphia.

But like the 49ers, the Cardinals didn’t escape the game unscathed. Veteran wideout Larry Fitzgerald strained his groin and star linebacker Haason Reddick injured his shoulder in the win, leaving both a bit iffy for the San Francisco game.

Murray, who rushed for 91 yards but threw for just 230 in the earlier loss to the 49ers, warned not to overlook a prideful opponent.

“Good team,” he insisted. “They’ll be ready to go, obviously. It’s a divisional game. It’s going to be very competitive.”

The San Francisco 49ers find themselves as the NFL’s lone remaining undefeated team, but that lofty standing will be put to the test on Monday night against potential league Most Valuable Player candidate Russell Wilson and the visiting Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are also undefeated in one respect, as they have won all four games away from the Emerald City.

Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a personal-best four touchdowns and eclipsed 300 yards for the third time in his career as San Francisco improved to 8-0 for the time since 1990 with a 28-25 victory over Arizona on Oct. 31. The 28-year-old will get his first look at the Seahawks since completing both of his passes — including one for a touchdown — in mop-up duty in his first appearance with the 49ers on Nov. 26, 2017. Seattle won that contest as part of a series-high nine-game winning streak before dropping a 26-23 overtime decision to San Francisco on the road on Dec. 16, 2018. Wilson, who had two touchdowns in that contest, threw for a career-high-tying five scores in the Seahawks’ 40-34 overtime win over Tampa Bay last week — although he’ll face San Francisco’s top-ranked pass defense on Monday.

Seattle added to its passing game with the addition of Josh Gordon off waivers from New England, although the wideout’s debut with the Seahawks could be delayed as he works his way past an ankle injury. “(We will) take it all the way to Monday and we’ll figure out what’s best, but it’s a really good first impression,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said after Gordon’s first practice on Thursday. Chris Carson aims to follow up his 10th career game of eclipsing 100 yards on the ground versus the 49ers’ 14th-ranked rush defense.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (8-0): Tight end George Kittle’s availability for Monday’s game is in jeopardy after an MRI exam revealed damage to both his knee and ankle after he was hit awkwardly on the first play of the contest against Arizona. While Kittle did not practice on Friday, San Francisco is trending toward seeing the returns of fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee), left tackle Joe Staley (fractured leg) and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee). Those additions likely are music to the ears of Tevin Coleman, who has found the end zone in back-to-back games and in four straight contests on Monday Night Football. Fellow running back Matt Breida has also excelled on Mondays, erupting for 322 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns (three rushings, two receiving) in three such contests.

Forcing turnovers was a big problem for the San Francisco 49ers while going 4-12 last season, but one game into 2019 it appears the problem is resolved. The 49ers will try to keep the interceptions coming when they visit Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

San Francisco was last in the NFL – by a wide margin – with just two interceptions last season but recorded three in a 31-17 victory over Tampa Bay in Week 1 while totaling four turnovers, and the defense believes it can play better. “You know, we played sloppy today, but it’s the first game, we’ve got to knock out some of the wrinkles,” veteran cornerback Richard Sherman told reporters. “… We’ve gotta find a way to play a more mistake-free football game, myself included. I had a couple penalties that I shouldn’t have had. Just ticky-tack, I’ve got to put myself in better position and we’ve got to hold ourselves to a standard. It was a decent game for us, but we have to get better.” That defense will be going up against a new-look Cincinnati offense under first-year head coach Zac Taylor that stalled in the red zone in a 21-20 loss at Seattle to open the season. “We know what the errors were,” Taylor told reporters. “We missed a field goal, had a turnover and they stopped us on fourth-and-one. We feel like those were self-inflicted plays to be exact. … Those are all things we felt like we could have done a better job controlling.”

ABOUT THE 49ERS (1-0): San Francisco recorded three sacks in the opener – including one each from first-round pick Joey Bosa and trade acquisition Dee Ford – and the upgraded defensive unit is hyping up offense as well. “I mean watching (Nick) Bosa get sacks, and watching the Dee Ford strip and get fumbles, it gets the offense going,” tight end George Kittle told the team’s website. “When your defense is playing like that, and (Richard) Sherman gets a pick-six, and Akhello (Witherspoon) with the pick-six. It just gets you fired up. … When your defense makes those big plays, it just gets everyone excited. It gets the offense moving, it’s just good vibes really, it just gets you going.” Kittle’s eight catches for 54 yards led the receiving corps as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (18-of-27, 166 yards, one TD, one INT) had an uneven season debut in his return from an ACL tear in his left knee.

ABOUT THE BENGALS (0-1): Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton threw the ball 51 times and finished with a career-best 418 yards to go with two touchdowns in his first game running Taylor’s offense, and he feels good about where the offense is going. “We know what we’re capable of, and then to go out and be productive in a game, especially our first one, it’s big,” Dalton told reporters. “It’s big for confidence. What we’re going to do here is going to work. Guys were pleased with the production; obviously we weren’t pleased with the result. With all the things we were able to do, I thought guys were happy with a lot of the stuff we did. It definitely gave us confidence.” Wide receiver John Ross was Dalton’s main target in Week 1 and established career bests of 158 yards and a pair of TDs on seven catches.

Back from a knee injury that derailed most of his 2018 season, Jimmy Garoppolo enters a crucial year under center for the San Francisco 49ers, who open play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. After going 5-0 as a starter with the Niners in 2017 and then signing a $137.5 million deal prior to last season, Garoppolo played in just three games before tearing the ACL on his left knee, crushing San Francisco’s hopes for a rise up the NFC West standings.

“That is what it is, and now he’s done the work to be healthy, but Jimmy hasn’t played a lot of football,” coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. “Everyone knows he’s a good player and knows he’s talented, but we’ve got to go through some situations and go through playing the position. I’m just so pumped that he’s healthy again.” The Niners went 3-10 without Garoppolo to finish out of the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year but hope that a full season of health for the 27-year-old signal-caller can turn things around. Tampa Bay’s playoff drought is much longer at 12 years and it has turned to new head coach Bruce Arians to help end it. Jameis Winston enters his fifth season as the team’s starting quarterback and will be surrounded by a handful of weapons, including Pro Bowler Mike Evans, who was third in the NFL with 1,524 yards in 2018.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (2018: 4-12, 3RD IN NFC WEST): While Garoppolo’s comeback is drawing plenty of attention, San Francisco also hopes to put opposing quarterbacks under severe pressure with a revamped defensive unit featuring newly signed edge rusher Dee Ford and No. 2 overall pick Nick Bosa. Ford had 13 sacks with Kansas City a year ago before signing with the Niners while Bosa, who is battling an ankle injury, was a standout at Ohio State. Fourth-year defensive end DeForest Buckner had a team-high 12 sacks a year ago.

ABOUT THE BUCCANEERS (2018: 5-11, 4TH IN NFC SOUTH): Tampa Bay may need a good start to stay relevant later in the year, as the schedule-makers handed the team a brutal stretch from late September through early November in which it goes without a home game for nearly 50 days. It starts with back-to-back road games at the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints, followed by a “home” game with the Carolina Panthers in London, a bye week and then road games at Tennessee and Seattle. The Buccaneers were 1-7 on the road each of the last two years.

Coleman had surgery Sunday for a broken fibula and dislocated ankle suffered in the first quarter of Saturday night’s 17-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Kyle Shahanan said Coleman will be placed on injured reserve Monday and the team plans to bring in tackles to work out to fill his spot on the roster.

The Niners lost three other players to injuries in the game with linebacker Elijah Lee expected to miss two weeks after undergoing surgery Sunday on his thumb, defensive tackle D.J. Jones week to week with a sprained knee and running back Raheem Mostert in concussion protocol.

The most serious injury came to Coleman on San Francisco’s opening drive of the exhibition season when teammate Najee Toran fell into his leg on a running play. His leg was placed on an air cast on the field and Coleman was taken off on a cart.

Coleman was projected to be the backup swing tackle to starters Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey, leaving a void at that spot going forward.

The Niners rested their entire projected starting line on Saturday. Sixth-round rookie Justin Skule struggled at times at right tackle and Willie Beavers was overmatched after stepping in for Coleman at left tackle. Beavers was called for three holding penalties in the game. Christian DiLauro also got playing time and was called for a false start and hold as San Francisco was penalized 18 times for 216 yards.

”You have to play better,” Shanahan said. ”Guys sometimes hold when they get beat. When you get beat, you can’t hold. You have to let it go so you don’t lose 10 yards. Sometimes you have to get into better position so you aren’t beat and you don’t have to hold.”

Coleman was a third-round pick by Cleveland in 2017 and was acquired in a trade last summer by San Francisco. He spent the entire season on the 53-man roster but was inactive every game.

In other injury news, Shanahan said safety Jimmie Ward will have X-rays this week to determine whether he’s ready to be activated from the physically unable to perform list after breaking his collarbone during the offseason program.

The Denver Broncos have reeled off three straight victories to remain in the AFC wild-card race and look to add another triumph when they visit the San Francisco 49es on Sunday. But the Broncos were dealt a couple of blows to overcome in the forms of a season-ending injury to receiver Emmanuel Sanders and a probable season-ender for cornerback Chris Harris Jr.

Harris fractured a bone in his lower right leg in last Sunday’s 24-10 victory over Cincinnati while Sanders tore his left Achilles during practice on Wednesday. “It’s tough,” Broncos quarterback Case Keenum told reporters. “You don’t really replace guys. Emmanuel is one of the best guys I’ve ever worked with. … It surpassed all my expectations, far and away.” San Francisco is far removed from the NFC playoff race and has allowed an average of 32.3 points during its three-game slide. The 49ers have lost five games by double digits, including last Sunday’s 43-16 setback against Seattle.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS (6-6): Keenum has passed for 2,953 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, but it won’t be a surprise if Denver opts for a run-heavy attack due to its inexperienced receiving group minus Sanders. Red-hot rookie running back Phillip Lindsay has topped 100 rushing yards in back-to-back games, and his season-best 157 against the Bengals has elevated him to fourth in the NFL with 937. The loss of three-time Pro Bowler Harris will hurt a defensive unit that is receiving standout seasons from pass rushers Von Miller (second in the NFL with 12.5 sacks) and Bradley Chubb (rookie-high 10 sacks).

ABOUT THE 49ERS (2-10): Quarterback Nick Mullens passed for a career-best 414 yards in the loss to the Seahawks and has a stellar target in tight end George Kittle (62 receptions, 893 yards), who is 73 yards away from surpassing the franchise record for a tight end (Vernon Davis with 965 in 2009). “Obviously, it hasn’t mattered what quarterback is in there,” Mullens told reporters of Kittle. “He’s been making plays since Day One. You can credit him to that chemistry because it doesn’t matter who is in there. He’s going to catch it and step up and make plays.” Defensive end DeForest Buckner leads the club with nine sacks, but the defensive unit has allowed more than 30 points on four occasions.

The San Francisco 49ers never expected to have a quarterback controversy this season. The New York Giants were hoping they wouldn’t, either. Yet, both teams have unsettled situations at the most important position in the game as Nick Mullens prepares to make his second career start when the 49ers host Eli Manning and the skidding Giants on Monday night.

New York has dropped five in a row and is tied for the worst record in football, but first-year coach Pat Shurmur is sticking with two-time Super Bowl champion Manning. “We got to get some wins,” Manning told reporters. “We got to get going, and everybody wants it. The team needs it, for the morale and for just the hard work and everything we put in.” Mullens was forced into the lineup due to injury but played brilliantly in his NFL debut to help San Francisco end a six-game slide in a 34-3 rout of Oakland on Nov. 1. “I think everyone saw the way he played. I don’t think it was too tough a decision,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. “Our team played really well, and he played well. It was gonna be hard not to give him that opportunity.”

ABOUT THE GIANTS (1-7): Despite the presence of an elite wide receiver in Odell Beckham Jr. and a star running back in rookie Saquon Barkley, Manning has failed to help New York generate more than 18 points in five of his eight games and has tossed only eight touchdown passes. Beckham, who leads the team with 61 catches, went into last week’s bye with back-to-back performances of at least eight catches and 136 yards, giving him five 100-yard efforts on the season. Barkley has nine receptions in each of his last three games and 58 on the season, but he has been limited to 38 and 43 yards rushing in the past two contests. A sign of the offensive woes: The Giants have allowed 20 points four times and lost each game.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (2-7): Injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo (torn ACL) and backup C.J. The Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers each harbored lofty aspirations of franchise-changing seasons entering 2018, but the Bay Area rivals are mired in downward spirals in what has become a battle of attrition for both teams. When the Raiders visit the 49ers on Thursday night, the most noteworthy similarity is the number of wins by each club: one.

“This is going to fun for the fans and fun for both teams,” said Oakland coach Jon Gruden, who was lured back to the Raiders’ sideline with the hope of bringing back the team’s glory days. Instead, the Raiders traded away both their best player (Khalil Mack) and arguably their top offensive talent (Amari Cooper), and have been increasingly non-competitive during a three-game slide, losing by an average of 18 points. ABOUT THE RAIDERS (1-6): Despite rumors of more moves at Tuesday’s trade deadline, Oakland opted to stand pat, although cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie announced his retirement on Instagram. Derek Carr registered a season-high 136.6 passer rating in last week’s 42-28 loss to Indianapolis, throwing for three touchdown passes before the Raiders were torched for 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Doug Martin rushed for 72 yards in place of an injured Marshawn Lynch and tight end Jared Cook continued his stellar season with four catches for 74 yards and a score. Mack’s loss has killed the pass rush, which has an NFL-low 7.0 sacks.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (1-7): Its losing streak aside, San Francisco has a major injury concern as quarterback C.J. Beathard was unable to practice Tuesday due to a sore right wrist. “We feel C.J. would be good if we were playing on Sunday but it’s going to be a test for Thursday and we probably won’t know until then,” said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who would go with undrafted free agent Nick Mullens if Beathard can’t go. The one reliable offensive option for San Francisco is tight end George Kittle, who has a team-high 37 receptions and at least five in six of eight games. The 49ers are surrendering 262.5 yards passing and have posted only two interceptions.
