The Seattle Seahawks have already clinched their first NFC West title since 2016.

But they still have something to play for in Week 17 when they meet the coronavirus-displaced San Francisco 49ers (6-9) on Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Ariz.

The Seahawks (11-4) can still earn the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye with a victory and a loss by Green Bay (12-3) at Chicago (8-7) and a loss or tie by New Orleans (11-4) tie at Carolina (5-10).

Of course, the odds of all those scenarios happening are slim — FiveThirtyEight.com puts the Seahawks chances of getting the No. 1 seed at 4 percent — but there’s still a possibility.

Which is all Seahawks coach Pete Carroll needs to hear.

“We’re going for it, and we would love to have that break (the bye in the wild-card round) for players if we can get it,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks captured the division title with a 20-9 victory against the Los Angeles Rams last weekend, as Russell Wilson threw for one touchdown, rushed for another and the defense limited the visitors to three field goals.

“I don’t want to break that mentality at all,” Carroll said. “We want to stay right with it and keep pushing and trying to get better. … This is a championship opportunity to put ourselves in the best situation going into the playoffs.”

Through the first half of the season, Wilson carried the Seahawks and the defense was on pace to shatter the NFL record for most yards allowed in a season.

But over the past seven games, the Seahawks are allowing an average of just 15 points, best in the league, are tied for first in sacks (24) and are third in total defense.

“We figured it out,” Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright said. “Guys are just starting to be accountable, we’re communicating like no other. To hear the other guys’ voices each and every play is truly special.”

Added safety Jamal Adams: “For everybody out there, they got to start putting respect on this defense’s name, because this defense is playing lights out.”

The injury-plagued 49ers, the defending NFC champions, have shown a willingness to play the role of spoiler. Behind third-string quarterback C.J. Beathard, the 49ers dealt Arizona’s playoff chances a blow with a 20-12 victory last weekend.

Beathard completed 13 of 22 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and Jeff Wilson rushed for a career-high 183 yards and made a 21-yard touchdown reception.

“That’s why I’ve been real proud of the players and the way they’ve handled themselves,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “That’s why I’m truly not going to count this year as a negative. It wasn’t fun. It’s not what we or our fans wanted. But I believe the way we went through it, if you go through things the right way, I think it hardens you and makes you stronger and makes you better.”

The Seahawks beat San Francisco 37-27 on Nov. 1 in Seattle. Nick Mullens replaced an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and guided the 49ers to three touchdowns in the final five minutes.

Shanahan said he doesn’t expect Garoppolo (ankle) to return this week. Wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk (ankle) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring), left tackle Trent Williams (elbow), defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) and cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) have already been ruled out. Kicker Robbie Gould was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Seahawks are relatively healthy, with cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) expected to return from the injured reserve list and right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle) is likely to play.

Perhaps the Los Angeles Rams were looking ahead.

How else to explain last weekend’s embarrassing 23-20 loss at home to the previously winless New York Jets — when the Rams had a chance to clinch a playoff berth?

“The only thing that makes you feel better is when you say, ‘All right, let’s learn from it, let’s own it, and let’s move forward accordingly,'” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “Because dwelling on it or getting still (ticked) off about it really doesn’t do you any good for how you move forward.”

The Rams (9-5) need to move forward quickly, with a game Sunday at NFC West-leading Seattle (10-4) that could decide the division title.

“As poor as (Sunday) was, we’ve got an opportunity to respond in a division game at their place with a lot at stake,” McVay said. “I do trust the character of this football team. I trust the resilience.”

Los Angeles won the first meeting against Seattle 23-16 on Nov. 15 as Jared Goff threw for 302 yards and Malcolm Brown rushed for a pair of touchdowns. That means the Rams would own the first tiebreaker against the Seahawks should they win Sunday to sweep the season series and go into the final week with matching 10-5 records.

“We have two division opponents coming up. We missed a chance to clinch, now it’s even more important to win the next two games,” said Rams safety John Johnson, whose team will close the regular season at Arizona. “Certain teams have that knack for winning. We’re still learning that.”

The Seahawks clinched their ninth playoff berth in coach Pete Carroll’s 11 seasons with a 20-15 victory last weekend at Washington. Carlos Hyde scored on a 50-yard run and Seattle’s defense turned away a fourth-quarter rally.

“(That) was a really big weekend for us,” Carroll said. “Real happy with the game that we put together, the way that the whole approach of it worked out well. We got the win that we were looking for and we got a little bit of help too, the Jets, getting their game. All of that adds together and sets up a really big opportunity this weekend coming up.”

The Seahawks aren’t just satisfied with a playoff berth. They haven’t won an NFC West title since 2016 and haven’t hosted a playoff game since January 2017.

“It’s pretty cool to clinch it, but we’ve got a big game coming up (this) week, man, and I’ll tell you what, I’m looking forward to that,” said Seattle safety Jamal Adams, who has 9 1/2 sacks this season, adding to his single-season record for a defensive back since the NFL began tracking the stat in 1982.

The Rams will be without leading rusher Cam Akers, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss to New York. Akers rushed for 63 yards Sunday and had 50 more yards and a touchdown wiped out by penalties.

Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen (foot) was a full participant in practice this week and will likely come off the injured reserve list. Starting right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle) and cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) were limited in practice but could return after missing multiple games. Carroll announced cornerback Quinton Dunbar (knee) will need surgery and will remain on the IR, ending his season.

The San Francisco 49ers find themselves as the NFL’s lone remaining undefeated team, but that lofty standing will be put to the test on Monday night against potential league Most Valuable Player candidate Russell Wilson and the visiting Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are also undefeated in one respect, as they have won all four games away from the Emerald City.

Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a personal-best four touchdowns and eclipsed 300 yards for the third time in his career as San Francisco improved to 8-0 for the time since 1990 with a 28-25 victory over Arizona on Oct. 31. The 28-year-old will get his first look at the Seahawks since completing both of his passes — including one for a touchdown — in mop-up duty in his first appearance with the 49ers on Nov. 26, 2017. Seattle won that contest as part of a series-high nine-game winning streak before dropping a 26-23 overtime decision to San Francisco on the road on Dec. 16, 2018. Wilson, who had two touchdowns in that contest, threw for a career-high-tying five scores in the Seahawks’ 40-34 overtime win over Tampa Bay last week — although he’ll face San Francisco’s top-ranked pass defense on Monday.

Seattle added to its passing game with the addition of Josh Gordon off waivers from New England, although the wideout’s debut with the Seahawks could be delayed as he works his way past an ankle injury. “(We will) take it all the way to Monday and we’ll figure out what’s best, but it’s a really good first impression,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said after Gordon’s first practice on Thursday. Chris Carson aims to follow up his 10th career game of eclipsing 100 yards on the ground versus the 49ers’ 14th-ranked rush defense.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (8-0): Tight end George Kittle’s availability for Monday’s game is in jeopardy after an MRI exam revealed damage to both his knee and ankle after he was hit awkwardly on the first play of the contest against Arizona. While Kittle did not practice on Friday, San Francisco is trending toward seeing the returns of fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee), left tackle Joe Staley (fractured leg) and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee). Those additions likely are music to the ears of Tevin Coleman, who has found the end zone in back-to-back games and in four straight contests on Monday Night Football. Fellow running back Matt Breida has also excelled on Mondays, erupting for 322 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns (three rushings, two receiving) in three such contests.

Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger engaged in a high-octane shootout the last time they shared the field, so there is no telling what may happen when the Seattle Seahawks visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Wilson passed for 345 yards and five touchdowns in the 39-30 home win during the 2015 season while Roethlisberger passed for 456 yards but just one score.

Roethlisberger and his teammates got off to a poor start in Week 1 as they were shellacked 33-3 by New England in their first game without departed receiver Antonio Brown. “I am only going to focus on the quarterback play, and the quarterback has to get better,” Roethlisberger, who passed for 276 yards and one interception, told reporters. “We didn’t execute well enough. I didn’t make enough plays, enough throws and they outscored us. … Half the teams lost their first game. Guys realize what Week 1 was, and now we are going into Week 2.” Seattle posted a 21-20 victory over Cincinnati, but it wasn’t pretty as the club was outgained 429-233. “We played from behind the whole day and those guys never stopped,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters. “They never stopped thinking we were going to win the football game, and that’s so valuable to us.”

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (1-0): Wilson was 14-of-20 for 196 yards and two scores in the opener while defensive end Quinton Jefferson, a Pittsburgh native, fueled the defense with a career-best two sacks. Star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney recorded two tackles and a sack during his team debut and is working on assimilating himself into the unit after recently being acquired from Houston. “He’s been great attitude-wise,” Carroll said at a press conference. “His mentality has been great. He’s been upbeat, positive and he’s been trying to stay out of the limelight. He’s being very humble, that has been his approach. … He’s really happy about being here.”

ABOUT THE STEELERS (0-1): Pittsburgh never got untracked against the Patriots and running back James Conner was a non-factor with 21 yards on 10 carries. Wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster is the new primary target with Brown gone, and he had six receptions for 78 yards while newcomer Donte Moncrief was a big disappointment with three catches for seven yards while being targeted a team-high 10 times. Rookie linebacker Devin Bush stood out with 11 tackles in his debut, but the unit recorded only one sack — from linebacker Bud Dupree — and didn’t force a turnover.

The Seattle Seahawks added a prime asset to their defense and the visiting Cincinnati Bengals show off a new coach when the teams square off in Sunday’s season-opening contest. Seattle recently added star defender Jadeveon Clowney in a trade from the Houston Texans while Zac Taylor has replaced Marvin Lewis (16 seasons) as coach of the Bengals.

Clowney’s presence provides Seattle’s defense with a prolific game changer who is a three-time Pro Bowler and star middle linebacker Bobby Wagner is looking to see what impact his presence has on the defense. “His motor for sure,” Wagner told reporters of what impresses him about Clowney. “His effort. The vicious hits in the backfield. The running back has the ball and before he makes a step, he’s getting him. The sacks. You watch a couple plays where he just moves a 350-pound lineman out of the way like it’s nothing. It’s just the power.” Taylor is working on changing the direction of a squad that has experienced three consecutive losing campaigns. “We’ve worked on setting the foundation and the culture for this team the last six months,” Taylor told reporters. “Now we’re relying on that to carry us through the season. We talk to players all the time – there’s going to be some great moments, there’s going to be some adversity we face – and we just need to be the same through the whole process. This will be the first test for us.”

ABOUT THE BENGALS (2018: 6-10, LAST IN AFC NORTH): Quarterback Andy Dalton has seven 3,000-yard seasons in his career but is facing criticism at age 31 on whether he is the long-term solution under the new coaching regime despite Taylor’s public praise. “He’s very level-headed,” Taylor said. “When you face adversity over the course of the season or within a game, at least you know that your quarterback is that calming influence for everybody – sometimes for the head coach too. If you look over and your quarterback is calm, it calms you down too. It’s really good to have a leader like him – someone who has the football acumen that he has.” Running back Joe Mixon is looking to build on a big season (1,168 on the ground) while seven-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Geno Atkins (10 sacks) leads the defensive unit.

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (2018: 10-6, SECOND IN NFC WEST): Clowney’s addition late in training camp was a stunner but it displayed the urgency at improving a defense that has slipped in recent seasons and allowed 353.3 yards per game last season, ranking 16th. Quarterback Russell Wilson is already the franchise’s all-time leader with 196 career touchdowns and joined Peyton Manning as the only signal callers in NFL history to pass for 3,000 yards and 20 scores in each of their first seven seasons. Wagner had 138 tackles last season and has reached 100 in his first seven campaigns.

That’s what happens when you’re ejected twice from college games for targeting.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of the most notable moments from Seattle’s preseason opener centered on Blair and riding that fine line between what’s a legal hit and what will draw a flag in the NFL.

“I’ve been working on it since I left Utah, I’ve been working on moving my shoulder,” Blair said. “I’m going full speed out there, it’s whatever they see.”

In drafting Blair, the Seahawks are hoping they’ve found the next version of Kam Chancellor – a big safety with the strength and size to be a force against the run but the skills to also defend the pass. And it didn’t take long into his first NFL preseason game to see the thumping he could add to the secondary.

It was the fourth quarter and Denver’s Drew Lock attempted to hit Nick Williams downfield. Blair came across and rocked Williams as the ball arrived, soon followed by a flag. It was a hit that drew oohs, but also a review to see if Blair was subject to ejection.

Blair appeared to avoid making helmet contact but his mistake was making the hit with his right shoulder, instead of his left. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the teaching point in that instance was for Blair to have tried making the hit with his left shoulder so his head was further away from the contact with the receiver.

“The cool thing was that he was there. He made a great break on the football, his timing was excellent, his toughness was demonstrated. Now there is a little technique issue to make sure that doesn’t happen again,” Carroll said.

Not surprisingly, doing drills to replicate that play was one all of the Seahawks’ defensive backs were doing on Sunday.

“That flag is all about inches,” Seattle safety Bradley McDougald said. “If he goes two inches lower then it’s a clean, legal play. We can’t let that flag or the referees diminish how we play the game. We just have to practice, drill those things at practice, getting the right strike range, the right target area and stay there and rep it enough that it becomes second nature.”

Blair was “scrambling” as Carroll described it in the preseason opener. He was flagged for the hit on Williams and made the incorrect read on a pass play going after the quarterback when he should have stayed on the receiver releasing off the line. He also made a perfect, legal hit along the sideline later in the fourth quarter and added a tackle for loss.

He played 36 defensive snaps, the most of any player in Seattle’s secondary.

“Some plays I was getting lined up wrong, my technique sometimes. I’m just working on it and getting better,” Blair said.

NOTES: Carroll said T/TE George Fant has a second-degree ankle sprain and will be aiming to try and get back for the season opener. Fant was injured when he was rolled up from behind on Thursday and was in a walking boot at practice Sunday. Fant has regularly been used as an extra tight end. … QB Geno Smith underwent surgery to remove a cyst from his knee and was a spectator at practice on Sunday. Carroll said Smith is hopeful he’ll be ready to play next Sunday against Minnesota, but said it could be a stretch to expect that. Smith’s uncertainty was why Seattle signed J.T. Barrett to add another arm for training camp.

The Seattle Seahawks saw any hopes of winning the NFC West evaporate when the division-rival Los Angeles Rams opened the season 8-0. The Seahawks’ playoff chances also appeared to take a major hit after back-to-back losses to both Los Angeles teams, but they have bounced back and carry a three-game winning streak into Monday night’s contest against the visiting Minnesota Vikings.

Seattle posted three-point victories over Green Bay and Carolina before routing San Francisco last week to vault into the fifth playoff spot in the NFC – one-half game ahead of Minnesota. “We need tough matchups with teams that really challenge us in many ways, and this is one of them, for sure,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters of facing the Vikings. “So we’ve got to get it cranked up, have a good week and get ready to go for a big opportunity on Monday night.” Minnesota owns a one-half game lead over three teams for the last postseason berth after losing at New England 24-10 last weekend and now must fly to the opposite coast to face resurgent Seattle. “It comes down to other teams are in the hunt, other teams are fighting for their division title and whoever has the best four-game stretch,” Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins told reporters. “It doesn’t really matter what happened before.”

ABOUT THE VIKINGS (6-5-1): Minnesota has alternated losses and wins over its last five games, a stretch during which Cousins has thrown nine touchdown passes against six interceptions. Running back Dalvin Cook was effective against the Patriots, picking up 84 yards on nine carries, but he has not had more than 10 rushing attempts since the season opener as the Vikings continue to struggle to find balance in their offense. Wide receiver Adam Thielen has registered nine 100-yard performances and just as many touchdowns, but he was held under 30 yards for the second time in the last four games by New England. Defensive pressure is critical for Minnesota, which is 6-1-1 when it notches at least three sacks and 0-4 when it fails to record three.

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (7-5): Unlike Minnesota, the running game is a point of emphasis for Seattle, which features the top-ranked attack with an average of 148.8 yards and at least 32 rushes in eight of its last 10 games. “Because it’s the best way to not screw it up,” Carroll said. “That’s why the turnover issue is of paramount importance to us. It’s the most important thing that we taught.” Quarterback Russell Wilson is averaging only 226.4 yards passing but usually dials it up late in the season, and this year is no exception – he has 11 touchdown passes and zero interceptions over his last four contests. Linemen Frank Clark and Jarran Reed have combined for 16.5 sacks to lead a unit ranked ninth in scoring defense (21.6 points).

The Green Bay Packers have been making fans of the home team happy this season, as they are 4-0-1 at Lambeau Field and, well, 0-4 everywhere else. The Packers look to put an end to their road woes on Thursday as they travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Seattle Seahawks, who begin a stretch of five home games in the next seven weeks.

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (4-5): Seattle appears to be getting healthier as running back Chris Carson (hip), right guard D.J. Fluker (calf) and strong safety Bradley McDougal (knee) are in line to be available for Thursday’s game. Carson rejoins a backfield that saw first-round rookie Rashaad Penny rush for a career-best 108 yards and a touchdown against the Rams while fellow running back Mike Davis had his first career receiving score. “It’s a good group, it’s a good problem. Not a great problem for the running backs, but it’s good for us and we’ll try to make the most of it,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters ahead of facing a Packers defense that has surrendered at least 123 rushing yards in each of the last four weeks.

Philip Rivers will make his 200th consecutive regular-season start when he leads the Los Angeles Chargers into battle against the host Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Rivers will become only the fourth quarterback to reach the milestone, joining Brett Favre (297), Eli Manning (210) and Peyton Manning (208).

Rivers, who turns 37 next month, has been Mr. Reliable since becoming the Chargers’ starter in 2006 and takes pride in his ability to answer the bell on game days. “I think there is a small element of toughness involved, but then again, shoot, lots of prayers for me from many people on Sundays and guys’ protection that allows me to be out there each and every week, whether dealing with minor things or big things,” Rivers told reporters. “Then just that competitiveness to want to be out there and play every week, and I have that same passion in this 200th one that I had in the first one. The Chargers are hoping to have running back Melvin Gordon (466 yards, six touchdowns) back on the field after he missed a win over Tennessee due to a hamstring injury and also had a bye week to recuperate. Defensive end Joey Bosa (foot) still isn’t ready to make his season debut for a unit that is allowing 23.3 points per game.
