If you like watching touchdowns and embarrassed defenses, you could be in store for some must-see viewing on Sunday night.

When the Tennessee Titans visit the Green Bay Packers in a matchup of first-place teams, it will pit the NFL’s first- and third-ranked scoring offenses. Tennessee leads the league at 31.1 points per game and Green Bay is third at 31.0.

Both teams are also in the top five in yards per game and top 10 in rushing yards per game. Quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Aaron Rodgers have combined for a whopping 71 touchdown passes against just nine interceptions.

“We’re going up against probably the best team we’ve faced all year, and a team that doesn’t lose in December at Lambeau (Field),” said Titans coach Mike Vrabel. “The quarterback has thrown 40 touchdowns, and they rarely turn it over. So it will be a huge challenge.”

And it’s fair to wonder if the Titans (10-4), who are tied with Indianapolis atop the AFC South but hold the tiebreaker, are ready for that huge defensive challenge. With the exception of scattered games, they have been vulnerable to any kind of decent passing attack, let alone the one Rodgers can crank up.

Making it even worse for Tennessee is its utter lack of pass rush. It ranks last in the NFL with 14 sacks. If it can’t at least pressure Rodgers, its chances of slowing down the Packers diminish immensely.

“We certainly have to do a better job of everybody being involved in helping disrupt the passing game,” Vrabel said.

Of course, that sword cuts both ways. While Green Bay’s defense has certainly been better than the Titans’, registering 38 sacks to rank ninth in the league, it still yields more than 24 points per game. And it also has the unenviable task of dealing with NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry.

Coming off 147 yards and a touchdown last week in a 46-25 victory over the Lions that included a stiff arm of an unfortunate defensive back, Henry has compiled 1,679 yards. A big game here and a 2,000-yard season could be within reach.

But the Packers can’t be too fixated on Henry. Tannehill is having the best season of his career, on pace to throw for nearly 4,000 yards. Receivers Corey Davis and A.J. Brown could each finish with more than 1,000 yards and are averaging nearly 16 yards per catch.

With the NFC North title in its hip pocket, Green Bay (11-3) is pushing for the top seed and a first-round bye in next month’s playoffs. It got a scare near the end of its Week 15 game with slumping Carolina, but was able to hold off the Panthers 24-16.

Second-year coach Matt LaFleur wasn’t thrilled that his offense didn’t produce anything but a 51-yard field goal by Mason Crosby in the second half, but saluted his team for getting the result.

“We did what we had to do,” LaFleur said. “We held on.”

This will be the 13th meeting of the franchises, dating back to Tennessee’s existence as the Houston Oilers. The Titans’ 47-25 blowout of the Packers four years ago in Nashville gave them a 7-5 series lead. Green Bay blasted Tennessee 55-7 in 2012, the teams’ last matchup in Wisconsin.

There were moments this season when Tennessee played with such force and vigor that a playoff berth seemed all but assured, something akin to a foregone conclusion given their offensive weapons.

But with five teams vying for four AFC playoff spots all sporting the same record, there are no guarantees for the Titans (10-5) on Sunday when they face the host Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

“I think your approach is that you just have to do things that help you win,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said of the pending sense of urgency. “You have to play complementary. You’ve got to take care of the football. You’ve got to try to get some turnovers, be sound in the kicking game. Not trying to do too much but go out and make plays and make plays to win the football game.”

The Titans rank third in the NFL in points (450) and fifth in yards (5,851) behind the imposing collective of quarterback Ryan Tannehill, running back Derrick Henry and receivers A.J. Brown and Corey Davis.

Tannehill ranks fourth in passer rating (106.7) and seventh in touchdowns (32) while Henry is threatening to claim a second consecutive triple crown for running backs by pacing the league in attempts (344) and yards (1,777) while sitting one touchdown shy of co-leaders Dalvin Cook and Alvin Kamara (with 16 apiece).

Brown and Davis both have 60 receptions for 900-plus yards while Davis is tied for sixth in the league with 10 receiving touchdowns.

Yet Tennessee has been undone by its defense, which ranks 29th in yards allowed, and is now in need of relying on past playoff experience to navigate the potential landmines in Houston. In theory, the run to the AFC Championship Game last season should serve the Titans well on Sunday, but in a season where guarantees have been few and far between, nothing is certain.

“I don’t know that,” Vrabel said. “We’ve got to focus on the Texans and the challenges that they present and our ability to prepare. I think you try to take from the games that you’ve played and past experiences and try not to think that it’s going to guarantee success because it doesn’t. Each week and each play doesn’t mean anything about the next one. It’s just about finding a way to get there.”

The Texans (4-11) are aiming to get Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson through the season finale. Watson has taken his lumps in recent weeks yet has remained a dynamic force. But the blow he took to his throwing arm in the fourth quarter last Sunday against the Bengals was worrisome enough to lead some to suggest that Watson should sit and call it a season Sunday.

Watson has made it clear, however, that if he is healthy he will play. And by all accounts, he will.

“As far as I know, he’s doing pretty good,” Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel said. “I haven’t heard that he’s not doing well, and so since I feel like he’s doing good, I hope he does good on Sunday, too.”

The Tennessee Titans authored one of the more impressive Week 1 victories and will try to start 2-0 for the first time in 11 years when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Behind a defense that forced three turnovers and recorded five sacks, the Titans rolled to a 43-13 victory at Cleveland, a popular preseason pick that was favored by nearly a touchdown over Tennessee.

Marcus Mariota threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns — two to tight end Delanie Walker — as the Titans stunned a legion of Browns fans itching to see their team live up to its hype. “It’s really all about us,” Mariota told reporters after the win. “All the outside noise, all those things that people say you can’t control. We don’t focus on that at all. It was a great team win.” The Colts won both meetings with the Titans a year ago by an average of 22 points, but they’ll come in as slight underdogs after dropping a 30-24 decision in overtime at the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Marlon Mack was the star for Indianapolis with 174 rushing yards and a touchdown.

ABOUT THE COLTS (0-1): Jacoby Brissett made his first start since 2017 in last Sunday’s loss to the Chargers and performed admirably, completing 21-of-27 passes for 190 yards and two TDs with no interceptions. “He made good decisions, he was accurate and he made those decisions quick,” offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni told the media. “He had to because they had good edge rushers on the edge coming after him. So I can’t say enough of how poised he was in those situations. He played like a veteran. He played like he had played for 10 years.” T.Y. Hilton, who had 155 receiving yards and two TDs in the one of the meetings with the Titans in 2018, hauled in eight catches for 87 yards and two scores in Week 1.

ABOUT THE TITANS (1-0): Defensive end Cameron Wake had 2.5 sacks — one for a safety — at Cleveland and the 37-year-old was awarded AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts, which included his 100th career sack. Rookie wideout A.J. Brown stood out on the offensive end with three catches for 100 yards, while running back Derrick Henry had a 75-yard TD catch and 84 yards and a score on the ground. Mariota sat out one meeting with the Colts last year and threw for a season-low 85 yards in the other encounter, a 38-10 loss at Indianapolis.

Expectations for the Cleveland Browns are the highest they have been in decades after a promising finish to 2018 and a strong offseason. The Browns will begin trying to live up to those expectations when they host the Tennessee Titans in the season opener on Sunday.

Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield is trying to follow up a stellar rookie campaign and has plenty of weapons at his disposal with star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. joining the team in the offseason and combining with Jarvis Landry on the outside and Nick Chubb in the backfield. “Nobody has done anything yet, so I would say everybody is starting from the same square one,” Mayfield told reporters. “I would say it is pretty hard to live up to any hype if you are listening to the outside. None of that really matters, so I think we have a bunch of guys who have bought in to what is going on in this building and the standards we are setting. To us, that is all that matters.” The Titans won four straight games to put themselves in position to compete for a playoff spot last season before dropping the season finale to the Indianapolis Colts and missing out by one game. Starting quarterback Marcus Mariota missed that meeting with the Colts with an injury and is focused on staying healthy as he nears a potential contract extension, but the team brought in veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill to serve as the backup just in case the injury bug strikes.

ABOUT THE TITANS (2018: 9-7, THIRD IN AFC SOUTH): Mariota has yet to start 16 games in a season and totaled 24 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions over the last two campaigns. “I have been dinged, I have been banged up, and I understand that,” Mariota told reporters. “I just have to do my job to be available for this team and hopefully throughout the year that will happen.” Tennessee made several moves in an effort to upgrade the protection around Mariota, giving a $44 million contract to free agent left guard Rodger Saffold and drafting guard Nate Davis in the third round.

ABOUT THE BROWNS (2018: 7-8-1, THIRD IN AFC NORTH): Mayfield led Cleveland to a 5-2 record over the final seven games last season and finished with 3,725 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes in 14 games, and he is looking forward to bringing Beckham into the offensive fold. “Very excited to see what we can do, what we are capable of doing out there and adjusting off what they are doing,” Mayfield told reporters. “Seeing if we can take care of some one on ones throughout the field.” Freddie Kitchens served as the offensive coordinator in 2018 and was promoted to head coach in the offseason but is expected to continue calling offensive plays.

No need for the Titans’ reigning sack leader to push too hard on his first day back.

”Oh, it felt great, just like I haven’t been out there in over a year,” Casey said Saturday. ”I know it’s not been that long, but it definitely feels like it. But to get it back out there and just get back moving around, get a little bit more confidence moving around, it definitely was a good first day.”

The Titans announced before the 11th practice of camp a handful of roster moves, the biggest that Casey passed his physical after starting on the physically unable to perform list. Fellow defensive lineman DaQuan Jones said it was awesome to have Casey back.

”He’s one of the league’s best D tackles,” Jones said. ”To have him back out there having the energy back out there, having his leadership back out there means a lot to the team.”

A Pro Bowl lineman each of the past four seasons, Casey was placed on injured reserve after hurting a knee Dec. 22 in the fourth quarter of a 25-16 win over Washington. He led the Titans with seven sacks and a career-high 50 quarterback pressures last season in his first year of coordinator Dean Pees’ defense. Casey also ranks eighth in franchise history with 46 career sacks.

A third-round pick out of Southern Cal in 2011, Casey has had six straight seasons with at least five sacks. He’s had at least two sacks in nine games in his career.

”An athletic, disruptive presence, knowledgeable,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said of Casey. ”He’s instinctive, played a lot of different positions for us and just excited to get him back and start working with him.”

After spending the entire offseason recovering, Casey said he tried not to think about his knee once practice started Saturday. Teammates told him he looked pretty smooth, though Casey said his legs felt a bit heavy as he starts working himself back into football shape without pushing too hard.

”That’s always the smart case, especially this early on getting back out there you don’t want to push it too hard where you can re-damage something or do something stupid,” Casey said. ”The whole mindset is to get back out there and move around as much as I can and let the drills and let the coaches ease me back in as much as they want.”

Casey has been working his way back alongside the Titans’ first-round pick, defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. The 19th pick overall in April has been recovering after tearing his left ACL in a February workout. Casey said the benefit has been him being able to show the rookie techniques and give Simmons tips.

He credited Simmons with pushing him through his own rehabilitation and in the weight room. Casey also thinks Titans coaches need to tell Simmons to slow down a bit with the rookie needs to be reminded he’s not yet at the recovery stage that the veteran is.

”I think when he gets out there, he’s going to be ready to go full speed,” Casey said.

Notes: The Titans also placed rookie linebacker D’Andre Walker, a fifth-round draft pick out of Georgia, on injured reserve. They waived wide receiver Jalen Tolliver, along with linebacker Riley Bullough and offensive tackle Cody Conway, who were both hurt Thursday night in their 27-10 exhibition win at Philadelphia. … They agreed to terms with RB Akeem Hunt, DE Eric Cotton, WR DeAngelo Yancey and LB Ukeme Eligwe.

Bruising running back Derrick Henry followed up a franchise-best 238-yard, four-touchdown performance in Tennessee’s 30-9 win over Jacksonville on Dec. 6 by recording a career-high 33 carries for 170 yards and two scores in Sunday’s 17-0 victory over the New York Giants. Henry broke fellow former Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell’s previous franchise-best two-game benchmark of 405 yards and has an NFL-best 11 touchdowns in his last eight contests. The Titans defense has permitted its foes to convert 5-of-28 third-down attempts over the last two weeks heading into a tilt with Washington, which has overcome a litany of serious injuries to remain in contention for an NFC postseason berth. “You would think we’d be out of the whole thing the way everything’s been going, week in and week out,” cornerback Josh Norman said. “Oh my gosh, this is like a circus. But at the same time, all that doesn’t matter. We are still in this thing.”

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (7-7): Making his first NFL start in seven years, journeyman quarterback Josh Johnson engineered a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter to help Washington snap a four-game skid with a 16-13 win over Jacksonville on Sunday. The 32-year-old earned another game under center after passing for 151 yards and a score and scampering for 49 more for the Redskins, who likely will lean on the ageless Adrian Peterson against Tennessee’s 12th-ranked rush defense. Jordan Reed’s availability is in question after he missed last week’s win over the Jaguars due to foot and toe injuries. Fellow tight end Jeremy Sprinkle caught all three passes that came his way — including a 6-yard toss for a touchdown.

ABOUT THE TITANS (8-6): Henry’s success on the ground can be traced to the determined effort of an offensive line that is led by tackle Taylor Lewan, who was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl this week. Marcus Mariota has benefited by extension, and the quarterback admitted that he’s pleased with the team’s potent ground attack. “I’m the No. 1 fan,” the 25-year-old Mariota said. “… For me, I am all about it. We have to continue to do that. I think it really helps us get into situations where we get in a rhythm, we can do different things. So I love it.” Mariota’s primary target in the passing game continues to be Corey Davis, who has reeled in a touchdown pass in two of his last three home outings.

Their ugly start to the season now a distant memory, the Houston Texans can set a franchise record when they host the Tennessee Titans on Monday night. The Texans own a two-game lead atop the AFC South and will go for their eighth consecutive victory after opening the campaign with three straight losses, including a 20-17 setback at Tennessee in Week 2.

Surging Houston is coming off consecutive two-point triumphs at Washington and Denver, giving the team four victories by three points or fewer during its winning streak. “We just try to keep on stacking wins and put us in position for later on down the season,” Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson told reporters. “It’s a very important game. It’s a home game. We want to win those. It’s a division game. We have to make sure we prepare well and get ready for it.” The Titans squandered a chance to make Monday’s matchup a showdown for division supremacy, following a pair of decisive wins over Dallas and New England with a 38-10 loss to Indianapolis last week. Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota was knocked out of that game with a stinger, but he practiced fully on Friday and Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur pronounced him “ready to roll.”

ABOUT THE TITANS (5-5): Mariota had his two best games in the wins over the Cowboys and Patriots, and it was feared that last week’s injury was related to the elbow issues that have plagued him for most of the season and forced him to miss the Week 2 matchup versus Houston. Running back Derrick Henry, who was used out of the wildcat in the first meeting, could be in line for a heavier workload as part of a backfield tandem with Dion Lewis, LaFleur said after Friday’s practice. Corey Davis is Mariota’s top target with 45 receptions, but it’s unclear if fellow wideout Taywan Taylor will return after a two-game absence. Tennessee had the NFL’s top-ranked scoring defense until it was shredded by the Colts.

ABOUT THE TEXANS (7-3): Watson had his NFL coming-out party against Tennessee last season in his third career start, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for another as Houston set a franchise record for points in a 57-14 rout. He has not thrown for more than 239 yards in his last five starts and the Texans have scored more than 23 points just twice, but wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has at least one TD catch in five straight games and eight overall after posting an NFL-high 13 receiving scores last season. Running back Lamar Miller is providing balance to the offense with at least 18 carries and 86 yards rushing in three of the last four games. The Texans are fifth in scoring defense (20.5 points).

Tennessee is 3-1 at home, including an impressive 34-10 triumph over New England on Nov. 11 that put the team at 5-4, and it plays four of its final five in downtown Nashville. “We get to go back to Nissan Stadium,” cornerback Logan Ryan told reporters. “We have the pieces, and we know we are going back home and have to execute. ABOUT THE JETS (3-8): Josh McCown has completed just 54.4 percent of his passes with one touchdown and three interceptions in two games filling in for Darnold, and the veteran is also hampered by back and hand injuries. “I mean, yeah,” Darnold told the media when asked if he’s pushing to start this week. “I want to play really bad. But at the same time, I understand it’s a process.” The Jets lead the AFC with 17 interceptions — including four by Darnold in his last game Nov. 4 at Miami — and the passers get little support from a running game that has averaged 77.5 yards per game since its out-of-nowhere 323-yard effort in a win over Denver on Oct. 7.

ABOUT THE TITANS (5-6): With two home games in a span of five days (Jacksonville pays a visit Thursday night), Tennessee is eager to set a tone in front of the home fans. “The goal is you don’t get down against the Jets,” said coach Mike Vrabel, who saw his team start strong and never look back in the rout of the Patriots. “If we start fast, which I hope we do and continue on that path with a lead and try to keep it so we can control the game.
