The Charlotte Hornets are identifying different answers to compensate for the loss of their rookie standout.

The Washington Wizards keep going to Russell Westbrook when they need something big to happen, particularly without their top scorer.

The Hornets and Wizards match up Tuesday night in Washington.

Westbrook is coming off a historic triple-double on Monday night – 35 points, 21 assists, and 14 rebounds — as the Wizards knocked off the Indiana Pacers 132-124 for their second win in a row. It was the first triple-double in league history to include at least 35 points and 20 assists.

“Consistency definitely has been big for us. That’s accountability,” Wizards forward Robin Lopez said.

The Hornets, meanwhile, had a three-game winning streak snapped with Sunday’s 101-97 overtime loss to visiting Phoenix.

Without guard LaMelo Ball, the Hornets are turning to various potential options. Their style looks a bit different.

“We knew the pace would slow down,” guard Devonte’ Graham said.

For Washington, Jerome Robinson started in place of guard Bradley Beal, who was out with a hip injury. Beal averages a league-best 31.3 points per game.

The Wizards have received a boost with the addition of Daniel Gafford to the roster. His defense provides Washington with a rim protector.

“It might change the rhythm of this team right now,” Washington’s Rui Hachimura said, referring to Chandler Hutchison as well as Gafford. “It’s going to be fun to play with them.”

Hutchison made his Wizards debut Monday night, providing 18 points off the bench.

The Hornets held Phoenix to 14 points in the fourth quarter in making a comeback that erased a 16-point hole.

“I think our defense is getting better,” Charlotte coach James Borrego said. “I like where our defense is. It has got to carry us every night.”

Roster adjustments continue to be an issue for the Hornets. Guard Malik Monk sat out Sunday’s game with a foot injury two nights after a 32-point outing against the Miami Heat.

Graham hit seven 3-point shots on his way to a season-high 30 points to help pick up the slack. However, PJ. Washington didn’t score while logging more than 44 minutes. There was also the Hornets’ debut for guard Brad Wanamaker, who didn’t attempt a shot during a brief stint.

“We’re saying we’ve been here before. Keep fighting, keep getting stops,” Graham said. “Offensively, just believing in our shot and taking it with confidence.”

A key factor for the Hornets tends to be forward Miles Bridges, who provided 18 points and 12 rebounds in the matchup with Phoenix. His intangibles tend to be a boost for Charlotte.

“He brings us an edge, a spirit more than anything,” Borrego said.

The Wizards, who have won only four of their past 14 games, are going for a sweep of a three-game homestand after topping Detroit and Indiana. They’ve won consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 25 and 27.

Washington’s last three-game win streak ended Feb. 22, when a string of five straight games was halted.

Charlotte heads on a six-game road trip as it tries to maintain the top spot in the Southeast Division.

“Right back on the road again,” Graham said. “We’ve been in these close games, beat some good teams.”

The Hornets won 119-97 on Feb. 7 at home in the only previous meeting with Washington this season.

PHILADELPHIA — The struggling Charlotte Hornets find themselves in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The surging Philadelphia 76ers, who host the Hornets on Friday, can only hope to be there at some point as well.

“Playoff time, baby,” rookie center Joel Embiid joked after the Sixers beat the New York Knicks 98-97 Wednesday night on a buzzer-beating jumper by guard T.J. McConnell.

The Sixers, one of the NBA’s worst teams the past four years, won four of their past five games to improve to 11-25. They have already exceeded their victory total for all of last season.

“We’ve just got to take it step by step, game by game,” Embiid said. “We’ve just got to get better every game, try to win every game.”

Embiid is a big reason for the team’s improvement. He leads the 76ers, as well as all NBA rookies, in scoring (19.4 points per game), rebounding (7.5 per game) and blocked shots (2.0 per game) despite playing an average of just 25.1 minutes. The team is limiting his action because Embiid, the third overall pick in the 2014 draft, missed two seasons after undergoing a pair of foot surgeries.

He also has rested periodically, and the Sixers plan to hold him out of Saturday’s game in Washington. He is expected to play Friday, despite sustaining a slight sprain of his left ankle late in the first half Wednesday against New York.

He returned and finished with 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as the Sixers erased a 10-point deficit in the final 2:29.

“The last couple games we’ve been finishing,” Embiid said, “so it gives us a lot of confidence.”

Embiid, who has seven double-doubles this season, exceeded the 20-point mark in each of his past seven games. According to the team’s official website, that is the longest such string by any Philadelphia player since Brett Brown became the coach in 2014.

The Hornets (20-19) have lost the first three games on a five-game road trip and five of six in all. Most recently, they fell 121-114 at Houston on Tuesday, when Rockets guard James Harden scored 40 points in a triple-double. Kemba Walker scored a team-high 25 points for the Hornets, adding 10 assists and six rebounds.

Charlotte hopes to have forward Nic Batum back on Friday. He missed the previous two games with a hyperextended right knee but practiced Thursday.

“I can’t say enough about how much this team needs Nic Batum,” power forward Marvin Williams told the Charlotte Observer. “Not only offensively what he brings to the table for himself and the rest of us, but defensively as well. He’s such a smart player, such a great player, on both ends of the floor.

“When you (lose) a guy like that, who does so many things, the team does struggle a little bit in his absence. If he’s back out there, it will make a huge difference.”

The Hornets beat the Sixers 109-93 on Nov. 2, but Embiid did not play.

Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs

How the Charlotte Hornets cope with the balanced offensive attack of the San Antonio Spurs will be a key aspect of the game play when the two teams meet on Saturday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The Spurs (29-7) return home after a dominating 129-91 win on Thursday over Denver in which LaMarcus Aldridge led San Antonio with 28 points. Kawhi Leonard added 24 points and Tony Parker, who has been hot of late, added 21 points and nine assists for the Spurs.

The victory over Denver improved the Spurs’ record on the road to 17-3; San Antonio is the only team in the NBA that’s been better on the road than at home (12-4) this season. The Spurs play five of their next six games at home.

Aldridge has been on a tear offensively, claiming San Antonio’s high-scorer honors in four of the Spurs’ past six games.

“He’s in a great rhythm right now and needs to stay like that,” Parker said of Aldridge. “He’s a great shooter, a great scorer. When he plays like that, he forces a double team and makes everybody’s job easier.”

San Antonio has also been buoyed by the continued solid play of center Pau Gasol, who was the Spurs’ main offseason free agent acquisition. Gasol is first on the team in rebounding (7.9), first among San Antonio’s regular starters in field-goal percentage (50.9 percent) and third in scoring (12.3 -points per game).

Gasol is one of only four players in NBA history and the sole active player to reach 19,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,500 assists and 1,500 blocks in his career.

“He’s a smart player,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Every coach likes to add smart players to the mix.”

Charlotte (20-17) heads to the Alamo City for the only time in the regular season on the heels of a 115-114 loss at Detroit on Thursday.

The Hornets will be without shooting guard Nicolas Batum, who suffered a hyperextended right knee during the contest against the Pistons.

The team confirmed the injury diagnosis during an MRI exam on Friday. There was no structural damage found.

Meanwhile, the Hornets roared back in the fourth quarter from a 19-point deficit and led by one in the closing seconds before two free throws by the Pistons’ Reggie Jackson with 1.9 seconds to play dropped Charlotte to its third loss in its past four games.

“The bottom line is that if we want to be the team that I think we can be, you got to win tonight,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford. We just aren’t where, to me, where we need to be. We had very little defensive readiness to start and we got to get better bench play.”

Kemba Walker poured in 20 of his team-high 32 points in the fourth quarter in which the Hornets scored a season-high 44 points, but still came up short. Marvin Williams added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets in the loss while Spencer Hawes hit for 18 points.

“It’s frustrating,” Hawes said after the loss. “We battled, and we don’t have to question whether this team is going to do that or not.

“When you dig a hole on the road like we did (Thursday), especially on the second night of a back-to-back, you put so much into just getting yourself back into the game and just giving yourself a chance,” Hawes continued. “That being said, it came down to a one-possession game at the end.”

San Antonio beat the Hornets 119-114 when the two teams met on Nov. 23 at Spectrum Center. The Spurs own a nine-game home win-streak against Charlotte dating back to Nov. 15, 2006 and have won 38 of the 53 games the teams have played all-time.

Zeller has been going through the NBA’s concussion protocol after he took an elbow to the head against Cleveland on Saturday. The 7-footer did not play Monday at Chicago or Wednesday against Oklahoma City.

Zeller is averaging 10.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks and shooting 59.5 percent from the field.

Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Charlotte Hornets

The basketball world knows what Russell Westbrook has accomplished this season. The MVP front-runner has carried the Oklahoma City Thunder after the departure of Kevin Durant to Golden State, and he continues to record one triple-double after another.

About 1,100 miles to the east, Charlotte’s Kemba Walker is quietly putting together a solid season on offense for the Hornets, and he is making a strong case to be an Eastern Conference All-Star.

The two will go head-to-head on Wednesday at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., when the Hornets (19-16) host the Thunder (21-14) in what is expected to be a high-scoring affair.

The Thunder enter the game 6-4 in their past 10 games while the Hornets are 5-5.

In a 118-111 loss to Chicago on Monday, Walker led Charlotte with 34 points and 11 rebounds — his fifth double-double of the season. He has scored a combined 71 points over the past two games, shooting a sizzling 63.4 percent.

The Thunder also took it on the chin against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee and lost 98-94 in the first of three straight road games.

The Bucks made life difficult for Westbrook, who scored 30 points — the 30th time he’s reached that mark this season. He struggled from the field, making 9 of 28 field-goal attempts. He started off 6-for-11 but went 0-for-8 in the third quarter when the Bucks took their first lead.

Westbrook was clearly frustrated after the game, sitting in front of his locker, arms folded.

“I thought he had some good decent 3-point shots, I thought he had some good pull-up shots,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan told the Daily Oklahoman. “Those are shots Russell practices every day. It’s shots he’s worked on. It’s shots that’s made him the player he is. A lot of his shots were shots he’s more than capable of making.”

Like every offensive star, Westbrook has a short memory and he should be emboldened by the fact that the Hornets allowed Chicago guard Jimmy Butler to score 52 points on Monday.

“Our defense is soft,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said after the game. “We can’t just pick and choose when to play it.”

If they do, Westbrook is sure to take advantage. He’s been a triple-double machine this season, recording a league best 16 while leading the Thunder with 30.9 points per game.

Hornets guard Michael Kidd-Gilchrist draws the assignment to try to stop, or at least slow down Westbrook.

Clifford has his own scoring machine.

In his sixth season, Walker has become the team leader and offensive force many predicted when he came out of Connecticut. On Monday, he sparked an 8-1 Charlotte run to start the second half against the Bulls. The Hornets built an eight-point lead and then a familiar disaster struck — the fourth quarter.

“It’s been our problem for the last couple of games and the last couple of weeks,” said forward Nicolas Batum, who leads the Hornets with 7.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. “We just stop scoring and stop making plays. It was another big loss for us.”

The Hornets will be without center Cody Zeller, who entered the league’s concussion protocol on Monday. The team said in a statement that Zeller was struck by an elbow in Saturday’s loss to Cleveland. There is no timetable for his return.

Zeller is averaging 10.7 points and 6.2 rebounds.

The Hornets also will be without sixth man Marco Belinelli (11 ppg), who has missed several games with a sprained ankle.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers will host the Charlotte Hornets in an Eastern Conference showdown on Monday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and the Hornets hope to have their top player.

Guard Kemba Walker suffered a left knee contusion Saturday night against Cleveland, but said he expects to play Monday night.

“It’s not bad at all,” Walker said. “At the moment it looked pretty bad, but I’m good.”

Walker has scored 20 or more points in six of the past nine games.

The Pacers (12-12) are coming off a big comeback win over Portland on Saturday night. They gave up 71 points at halftime and trailed by 20 at one point, but still managed to come back and win the game.

Paul George outscored the Blazers by himself in the fourth quarter, putting 15 points on the board in those final 12 minutes. He had 37 points for the game.

“I’m supposed to be trusted in those situations,” George said. “That’s the guy I want to be for this team.”

Indiana coach Nate McMillan is hoping his team will find some consistency.

“When you play the game the right way, you get rewarded for that,” McMillan said. “Turnovers and one-on-one ball won’t get it done. We’ve got to bring consistency to both ends of the floor every night.”

Indiana may be without starting guard Monta Ellis. He left the Portland game with a sore groin and is listed as questionable.

The Pacers have been around the .500 mark all season, but have been a lot better team at home (9-4) compared to the road (3-8).

The Charlotte Hornets (14-10) have actually been a little better on the road (6-4) than at home (8-6) this season and they’ve been a tough matchup for the Pacers in recent years.

They already defeated the Pacers earlier this season, 122-100 in Charlotte. The Hornets also swept the three-game season series against Indiana last season.

In their first matchup of this season, Charlotte got to the line 32 times, while the Pacers took just 15 attempts.

The Hornets just had their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers 116-105. They were unable to contain LeBron James, who scored 44 points.

“I’m just disappointed in the way we started,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “You can’t let those guys get easy ones early. That’s when you have problems.”

Roy Hibbert will be playing his first game in Indiana against his former team. When he played with the Lakers last season, he was injured and didn’t play the game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Hibbert spent his first seven seasons with the Pacers.

On the other side, Al Jefferson will be playing against his former team as well. He spent the last three seasons as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

Both teams are in the top half of the league in points per game, assists, and pace of play. The Hornets have shown better defense for the season, but that will be put to the test against the red-hot George.

These teams won’t meet again until they play twice in the month of March.

“(Saturday) was especially disappointing,” Charlotte coach Steve Clifford told reporters. “The reality is we’re going to become a more physical group or we’re not. But we’re not winning like this, not every night.” Dallas stands last in the Western Conference, but has won two of its last four after Saturday’s surprising 107-82 rout of Chicago at home with 26 points from Wesley Matthews. “Through this rough patch, injuries and everything, everybody had to mold together,” Matthews told reporters. “It’s almost like we had to restructure ourselves. I think everybody has embraced that.” However, the Mavericks did drop a 97-87 decision at Charlotte on Dec. 1 while shooting just 37.2 percent from the floor and the teams have split their last eight meetings.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (11-9): Charlotte starts a stretch in which it plays six of eight on the road, where the Hornets are 5-3, and must improve on the defensive end after allowing an average of 112.4 points in nine losses. Point guard Kemba Walker leads the offense, posting 23.8 points and 5.1 assists per contest while draining 42 percent of his 3-point attempts in the early going. Backcourt mate Nicolas Batum leads the team in assists (5.6) after dishing out a season-high 12 against Minnesota, and chips in with 13.4 points per game.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (4-15): With future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki (Achilles) out indefinitely after playing only five games this season, everyone will have to provide more offense if Dallas is going to stay competitive. Matthews has stepped up the last four games while posting 21.8 points per game after draining 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the victory over Chicago. Harrison Barnes leads the team in scoring (20.4) and produced at least 20 in nine of the past 14 games, but was held to 17 on 8-of-20 from the field against Charlotte last week.

The Charlotte Hornets are hoping to continue surging against the floundering Minnesota Timberwolves when the two teams square off Saturday at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.

After a four-game losing streak ended a week ago, the Hornets have won three of their last four games to boost their record to 11-8. Charlotte is in the midst of a stretch in which it plays five of six games at home — and seemed to have found some flash from 7-2 center Roy Hibbert in a 97-87 victory over Dallas on Thursday.

Hibbert hit 5-of-7 attempts for 11 points against the Mavericks with four rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes. He missed five games at the start of the season for right knee soreness, but Hornets coach Steve Clifford called his performance against Dallas one of his top two outings of the season.

“I’m not 100 percent yet, but I’m getting there,” Hibbert told reporters after the Dallas victory. “It’s come slower than I would have liked, but it’s a long season.”

While Hibbert continues to work out kinks, the Hornets have continued to rely most upon Kemba Walker. The point guard hit two 3-pointers in the final four minutes to help seal the triumph over the Mavericks.

Walker leads Charlotte with 23.9 points per game, and his average of 24.4 points per game in November set a franchise record for that month.

Forward Marvin Williams has missed the last four games with a hyperextended left knee, and is expected to be out until next week, Clifford said.

The Timberwolves, meanwhile, are hoping to bounce back from back-to-back losses to the New York Knicks. In all, Minnesota has lost its last four games, and seven of the last eight games. They dropped to 5-14 with Friday’s loss.

Zach LaVine led the Wolves with 23 points in their 118-114 loss to the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns added 20 points while Andrew Wiggins chipped in 19.

“The thing about them is they have so many talented scorers who can have big nights,” Hornets center Cody Zeller said. “We have to come out and play defense right from the start and not really let them get into a flow.”

Minnesota will be trying to snap its losing streak on the second night of a back-to-back. The Timberwolves are 2-1 in such games this season.

A hopeful spot of late was Towns’ performance Wednesday in a 106-104 loss to the Knicks. The 7-foot center had 47 points and 18 rebounds in the loss, numbers that set historic marks.

Since 1963-64, only three players have scored 47 points or more at a younger age than the 21-year-old Towns — Brandon Jennings, LeBron James and Kevin Durant. He also joined Kevin Garnett and Kevin Love as the only other Wolves to have a game with at last 45 points and 15 rebounds.

“It was a monster game,” Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. “It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t pull out the win.”

Numerous defenders are struggling to stop Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley this season and no team experienced more difficulties than the Charlotte Hornets.

A week ago Conley scored a season-high 31 points and Memphis claimed 15-point win in Charlotte.

Now comes the rematch when the Hornets visit the Grizzlies on Monday night.

Conley is averaging a career-high 19.5 points to go along with 5.8 assists. He is shooting 43.5 percent and making a career-best 47.6 percent of his 3-pointers.

Conley has three 30-point games this season through his first 16 games. He had never more than two 30-point games in a season and last week in Charlotte, Conley hit five 3-pointers and shot 11 of 21 from the field.

The big night by Conley occurred as the Grizzlies opened a 12-point lead early in the first quarter, led by 24 at halftime and shot 58 percent.

“What can I say about Mike Conley?” Memphis coach David Fizdale said last week. “He’s getting closer and closer to the guy I want him to be — the killer, the killer that I want him to be. I’m really proud of his openness to it and that he is trying to adapt to what I want him to be.”

Conley’s performance is part of a 7-1 run for the Grizzlies, who started it two weeks ago in Utah. In the last eight games, Conley is averaging 20.2 points and delivered another strong showing in Saturday’s 110-107 win at Miami.

Conley had 21 points while Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 28. The duo took turns taking over as Gasol scored 26 in the first three quarters and Conley scored the final 11 points.

“We play off each other; we know how to play together,” Gasol said of Conley. “I know where he likes to get the ball and we are patient. We’re unselfish. We’re going to make a basketball play every time.”

For Charlotte, last week’s loss to Memphis was the second of four straight defeats. The Hornets dropped to .500 with a five-point loss to San Antonio Wednesday and a two-point overtime setback at New York Friday.

Charlotte rebounded with a 107-102 win over New York on Friday in a game that might have resembled a 2010-11 Connecticut Huskies game with Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb starting in the backcourt for the first time as NBA players.

Walker scored 28 while Lamb added 18 and a career-high 17 rebounds. The performance was impressive since Lamb had only played six minutes since returning from a 10-game absence with a strained left hamstring.

“That was a great win for us,” Lamb said. “Everybody fought. We were short-handed and everybody just fought and leaned on each other, and it was just a huge, huge win for us.”

Lamb filled in for Nicolas Batum, who did not play due to a corneal abrasion Friday. In 36 minutes, Lamb shot 8 of 15 and his showing even surprised coach Steve Clifford.

“It’s surprising, because he literally hasn’t been able to do any kind of contact for, I’d say, close to a month, three-and-a-half, four weeks,” Clifford said. “But his game is based on skill. He’s a skill-based player and you saw that tonight.”

Besides the showing of its starting backcourt, Charlotte’s defense also improved. The Hornets allowed 114.5 points and 47.1 percent shooting during their slide but held the Knicks to 37.8 percent shooting as Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was part of a defensive effort that held New York star Carmelo Anthony to 7-of-25 shooting.
