The Cowboys and Romo have stressed this is not related to the disk surgery he had last December and is not a threat to end his season. Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty suffered a similar injury this season and missed just one game.

Ed Werder reported Romo would either start or be inactive against the Cardinals. He did not practice all week and is officially listed as questionable.

The transverse process is a small bone that sticks out from either side of the vertebrae. Romo has been receiving multiple hours of treatment all week at the Cowboys’ facility and at home.

Romo suffered the injury when he took a knee from Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson on a third-quarter sack last Monday night. After taking X-rays, which were negative, and receiving a pain-killing injection, Romo returned for the Cowboys’ final two drives of the game. He had a CT scan Tuesday.

Brandon Weeden would start against the Cardinals if Romo cannot play. Weeden took all of the first-team snaps during the week with Romo unable to practice.

The Cowboys travel to London on Monday for their Nov. 9 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With a long flight and an achy back from two back surgeries in less than a year, Romo’s practice schedule likely will be monitored leading up to that game whether Romo plays Sunday or not.

If he cannot play against Arizona, then this would be the fourth time in the last seven seasons Romo has missed a game because of an injury. He missed three games in 2008 with a broken pinkie finger. He missed the final 10 games of the 2010 season with a broken collarbone and did not play in last year’s season finale because of back surgery.

Weeden performed well in Romo’s absence against Washington, completing 4-of-6 passes for 69 yards and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten. He started 20 games in two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, posting a 5-15 record.

“I feel ready. I’m confident,” Weeden said. “The uncertainty is the only thing. What’s the word? We going to do this? That will come but I just have to prepare like I’m going to play and expect the unexpected.”

With Romo unable to take part in the offseason program, limited during training camp and not practicing on Wednesdays since Week 2, Weeden has received more work with the first-team offense than most backup quarterbacks.

Undrafted rookie Dustin Vaughan would serve as the Cowboys backup quarterback. He has been inactive the first eight games of the season.

The meeting was described as tense, and Garrett seriously considered whether Randle’s continued presence on the team might be an impediment to harmony in the locker room.

When asked if Randle would play on Sunday against the Cardinals and remain part of the team, one source answered, “Randle is staying for now.”

Randle is the backup to NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray and his role has increased in recent weeks as the Cowboys attempt to avoid overworking Murray.

Bryant and Brent were furious about Randle mentioning their legal problems to Frisco police as he was being booked into jail for shoplifting charges. The tape has since become public, revealing to the players what Randle said about them while he expressed to the police concerns the Cowboys might suspend him.

While he may avoid further punishment from the team, Randle apparently has been ostracized by some teammates. The Cowboys fined Randle the equivalent of a game check for the shoplifting arrest.

The Cowboys have Lance Dunbar and veteran Ryan Williams (practice squad) on the roster at running back.

“We have nothing medically that would prevent him from playing,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Wednesday morning. “What I mean by that is there is nothing to his injury that won’t function.

“This is a function of pain tolerance, but it is a serious issue. You could look at people who had similar-type contusions or similar-type injury and haven’t played the next week, so that would cause you some concern.”

Romo needed surgery last December to repair a herniated disk that kept him out for the entire offseason and limited him in training camp and the preseason. Coach Jason Garrett said this latest injury is not related to Romo’s back surgery.

He took a knee to the back during the third quarter of Monday’s overtime loss to the Washington Redskins but was able to return after an X-ray proved negative and gaining medical clearance. He did receive a pain-killing injection before going back into the game.

Romo arrived early to the team’s Valley Ranch practice facility on Wednesday morning for treatment. He had a CT scan on Tuesday. He did not report pain in his legs.

A short turnaround between games could be Romo’s biggest issue in playing against the Cardinals. The Cowboys would have what Garrett called a “jog through” practice Wednesday before getting into a normal schedule on Thursday and Friday.

Romo has not participated in a Wednesday practice since Week 2, as he and the medical staff decided it was best for him to sit out a day to build his strength and make sure he was ready for game days.

In 2011, Romo played following a broken rib and punctured lung suffered in a Week 2 overtime win at San Francisco, but he had an extra day of rest with the Cowboys playing on “Monday Night Football.”

If Romo can’t play Sunday, Brandon Weeden would make his first start as a Cowboy and first since Week 13 last year. He posted a 5-15 record over two years as the Cleveland Browns starter.

In two series of work Monday against the Redskins, Weeden completed 4 of 6 passes for 69 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten that tied the score at 17 early in the fourth quarter.

After Sunday’s game against Arizona, the Cowboys will leave for London on Monday for their Nov. 9 meeting against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the bye week after that game, Jones said the team has not had discussions about playing Romo this week and possibly sitting him against the Jaguars.

“The main thing is the tolerance,” Jones said. “We don’t know how impactful the soreness or impactful the stiffness would be on him. We don’t know that and won’t know that until probably as late as game time.”
