After one game with Aaron Gordon in the mix, it looks like the Denver Nuggets made a smart move in acquiring the young forward.

The second test comes Tuesday night when Denver hosts the Philadelphia 76ers in a matchup of teams with title aspirations.

The Nuggets increased their chances when they acquired Gordon from Orlando last week, bolstering their frontcourt and adding another scoring option as well as a versatile defender. Gordon made his Denver debut Sunday night in a win over Atlanta and he came away impressed with his new squad.

“I see no limits for this team. It looks like we have all the pieces for this team, we have depth,” Gordon said after scoring 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting in 21 minutes. “We’re covered in a lot of different spots. As long as we’re working together there’s no stopping us.”

The Nuggets expect there to be some growing pains as Gordon becomes integrated into the system, but they also know there isn’t much time left in the regular season. Denver has only 26 games left, and in the tight Western Conference and a constant shifting of positioning, time is not a luxury.

“Our guys understand with (26) games to go, you look at the standings, it’s going to be a really tight race and every game counts, but It’s not going to happen overnight,” coach Michael Malone said. “Aaron Gordon is not going to fit in seamlessly tonight and be like, ‘yep, we got this,’ it’s going to take a little bit of time and we understand that.”

The Nuggets face a Philadelphia team that sits atop the Eastern Conference but with little margin for error. The Sixers are 10-2 in March but are in a stride-for-stride race with Brooklyn, which was 9-2 in the month heading into Monday night’s game with league-worst Minnesota.

Philadelphia players are well aware of the standings.

“I look at the standings, I know where we are, I know the race,” Tobias Harris said. “I’d be lying to you if I said I don’t look at the standings. I look at the standings every day; it is just something that I do.”

Being locked in such a tight battle with the Nets doesn’t bother Harris.

“I look at the standings and say, ‘We need a win,'” he said. “If it was any different, I would look at it the same exact way.”

The Sixers have stayed atop the Eastern Conference despite not having Joel Embiid for most of the month. Embiid was having an MVP-caliber season before a bone bruise in his left knee has sidelined him for the past eight games. He’s also likely to miss Tuesday’s game, too.

They had a four-game winning streak snapped Saturday night at the Los Angeles Clippers, the fourth of a six-game road trip that has touched down in New York (Knicks), the Bay Area (Warriors), Los Angeles (Lakers and Clippers), Denver and finishes in Cleveland on Thursday night.

Denver, meanwhile, is settling in for plenty of home games. Sunday’s win over the Hawks was the start of having seven of eight at home, with only a one-game trip to Los Angeles to face the Clippers in the next two weeks.

Oddsmakers currently have the SAN ANTONIO listed as -11.5 point favorites versus the DENVER, while the game’s total is sitting at 221.

The San Antonio Spurs consider 32 wins in 41 games a good start to a season they hope will be memorable, in essence putting the rest of the NBA on alert to just how good they can be if they can put all their considerably talented pieces together at the same time.

The next team to try to derail the Spurs will be the Denver Nuggets, who head to the Alamo City on Thursday for a matchup at the AT&T Center.

At the halfway mark of its season, the Spurs (32-9) own the second-best record in the league and the Western Conference but say they have room for improvement.

“No team is where they want to be,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after a 122-114 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday. “Maybe Golden State is, but the rest of us are trying to get there.”

Despite their success, the Spurs are struggling to play complete games, the most recent exhibit coming against Minnesota, when they didn’t dominate until the end of the third quarter. Just don’t call San Antonio’s efforts sluggish, as one reporter did Tuesday night.

“I don’t think we were sluggish — that’s not the right word,” Popovich said. “Nobody is sluggish — it’s an NBA game, and everybody is playing for their life. There might be mental mistakes and there might be lack of physicality or missed shots and turnovers, but sluggish doesn’t fit.”

Kawhi Leonard, who had 34 points in the win Tuesday, leads the Spurs in scoring at 24.8 per contest. He produced 30-plus points in each of the past four games, equaling the longest streak by any San Antonio player since Mike Mitchell had six straight in 1986.

San Antonio scored 100-plus points in each of its past 18 games, the longest streak by a Spurs team since going 22 straight in 1995.

That is what awaits Denver as it travels to San Antonio with a three-game win streak in its pocket, with the latest victory a 127-121 triumph against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday at Staples Center.

Nikola Jokic scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. Will Barton added 26 points and eight assists, Kenneth Faried contributed 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Emmanuel Mudiay each hit for 14 points for the Nuggets, who beat the Lakers in Los Angeles for the seventh consecutive time.

Denver (17-23) nearly blew a huge third-quarter lead by getting outscored 37-26 in the final period.

“We blew the lead, but we stayed together,” Jokic said. “We had really good defensive stops in the last minute. The offense was really good for us. We have (plenty of) people playing well for us.”

The Nuggets are averaging 130.7 points and 33 assists per game during their winning streak. Denver’s starters accounted for all but 24 of the team’s points in the victory Tuesday.

“Early in the season, we probably lose this game, to be honest,” Chandler said. “Everybody held their composure; everybody made big plays.”

The Nuggets and Spurs played on Jan. 5 in Denver, with San Antonio rolling to a 127-99 win in which LaMarcus Aldridge led the Spurs with 28 points while the Nuggets got 19 points and 11 rebounds from Jokic. San Antonio had a season-low seven turnovers in the win and shot a season-best 56.7 percent (51 of 90) from the floor and 50 percent (12 of 24) from 3-point range. Denver shot just 28 percent (7 of 25) from beyond the arc.

The Spurs won the past seven games played between the teams in San Antonio.

Indiana Pacers vs Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets might be losing a home game at Pepsi Center, but the way they are playing, switching venues might be a good thing.

Even if it is across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Nuggets, losers of five straight, “host” the Indiana Pacers at the O2 Arena in London on Thursday. The NBA Global Game counts as a home game for Denver, and that might be true — in a way. Four players on the roster are from Europe, so this is as close to an NBA home game for many of those players.

“It will be a true honor and a great experience to represent both the Nuggets and the NBA in London as part of the NBA Global Games in 2017,” forward Danilo Gallinari, who is from Italy, told the team website. “Our entire team and organization are looking forward to this opportunity to showcase our league to fans overseas.”

This is the seventh regular-season NBA game to be played in London and the first since last Jan. 14, when the Toronto Raptors beat the Orlando Magic.

The Pacers (20-18) are trending in a different direction than the Nuggets (14-23). Indiana has won five straight, thanks in part to a commitment to share the ball. The Pacers recorded at least 23 assists in each of the past seven games to move above the .500 mark.

Point guard Jeff Teague has been the catalyst in the recent success. He had 17 assists in a win over the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 30 and added a double-double with 21 points and 15 assists in a victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 5.

The recent winning streak has the Pacers feeling good, and they are enjoying their time in London. They went sightseeing to noted tourist attractions such as Big Ben and Westminster Abbey and dined at Kensington Palace.

Once the ball tips at 8 p.m. local time Thursday, the Pacers plan on being all business.

“We don’t want to lose sight of what this trip was about,” Paul George told The Indianapolis Star before the team’s practice Wednesday in London. “This trip is to come over here and win a game. It just so happens we play it here in London. That’s really what that focus has been, to keep this groove going.”

While Indiana wants to keep grooving, the Nuggets want to get out of their rut. They had predictable losses during the streak to the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs, but home losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings have hurt their dream of making it to the playoffs for the first time in four years.

They will need to play better defense if they want to snap their skid. The Nuggets have allowed opponents to score an average of 123.8 points the past five game, with all five opponents scoring at least 120 points.

“We can’t be a team that just relies on our offense to pick up our defense,” Denver coach Michael Malone said after a recent loss. “We have to bring our defense every night regardless if you’re making shots.”

Denver players also toured London, taking in the sights between practices. The Nuggets should be close to full strength if Nikola Jokic has recovered from the illness that kept him out of the Saturday loss at Oklahoma City and if Kenneth Faried’s back holds up.

They will need everybody if they want to stop two streaks in London — their losing streak and Indiana’s winning streak.

“It’s definitely getting frustrating,” Denver forward Wilson Chandler said. “We’ve got to figure out some way to get out of it, and it’s going to be on the defensive end.”

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder ended 2016 with one of their best and easiest wins of the year. In the New Years Eve game, they thrashed the L.A. Clippers to sprint into 2017 with high optimism.

Since then, the Thunder found a rough patch with losses in three straight games, all on the road. That includes a 118-116 nail biter to Houston Thursday.

Oklahoma City doesn’t seem to be extremely worried about the streak. Most likely because each of the defeats were close games down the stretch in the fourth quarter that they could have won.

“Oh yeah, we’re gonna be alright,” Victor Oladipo said to ESPN.com. “We’re gonna be just fine. We just got to keep getting better.”

The losing streak could have come to an end in Houston if Russell Westbrook had been able to connect on a 3-pointer he took over James Harden with five seconds left and the game tied at 116-116.

“I thought it was going to go in,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan told NBA.com. “It was right on line. He had his balance, he had his legs under him and it hit the back of the rim.”

On one hand, Donovan had every right to believe the shot was going in. Westbrook leads the NBA in clutch points with 138. No one else in the league has over a 100.

However, Westbrook is also 2 of 18 on go-ahead 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds during his career. That includes 0-for-6 this season. The latter will not stop Westbrook from attempting them.

The Thunder return home the Chesapeake Energy Arena to take on the Denver Nuggets on Saturday for the first of only three games in Oklahoma City month. It is also the perfect opportunity to end the three-game skid.

The Nuggets are also mired in a losing streak. Theirs is four games long and stretches back to Dec. 30.

In each of the last four defeats, Denver’s opponents scored at least 120 points. That includes 127 by both the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs.

The defensive struggles have been a focal point for Nuggets coach Michael Malone.

“We can’t be a team that just relies on their offense to pick up our defense,” Malone told The Denver Post. “We have to pick up our defense every night regardless of whether we’re making shots or not.”

If the Nuggets do not reign in their defense Saturday, they will find themselves trying to outscore Westbrook, who leads the league in scoring. But it’s his supporting cast on which Denver will need to focus.

When the two teams met Nov. 26 in Denver, Oklahoma City pulled out a 132-129 victory. While Westbrook had a triple double, five other players scored more than 10 points.

The Nuggets need to find a way to limit the rest of the Thunder while not letting Westbrook overwhelm them. It’s the type of challenge Malone is looking to see if his team will accept.

“In this league you can’t let go. You’ve got to bend, not break,” Malone told The Denver Post. “We have to get that fight back for four quarters for us to be a competitive team.”

DALLAS — When the Denver Nuggets visit the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, they will try do something they’ve done just once this season — win two games in a row.

That came nearly four weeks ago. Since the Nuggets’ longest win streak of the season — if streak even applies for just two consecutive wins — they’ve gone 3-7.

But after Saturday’s 121-113 win at Orlando, Denver (9-15) is looking at the prospect of going on a mini-hot streak with this game against Dallas followed by a three-game homestand against the Portland Trail Blazers, New York Knicks and the Mavs again.

Denver also comes to Dallas (5-18) with point guard Emmanuel Mudiay having returned to the lineup on Saturday at Orlando. He played 22 minutes after missing one game with a right ankle sprain.

If the Nuggets took away a lesson from their win at Orlando, it might be how to remain calm in the fourth quarter and not let adversity get the best of them. Denver has been a poor fourth-quarter team this season, but this time managed to withstand a charge and hold on.

“I think the key to the game was — yes, we lost the lead — we didn’t lose our heads,” Nuggets coach Mike Malone told reporters after the game. “We were poised, we were composed and we executed and got stops. The fact of the matter is if you want to win games on the road, that’s what you need to do.”

Denver can also take a lesson from several teams that recently came to Dallas believing they could continue momentum against a struggling team. But the Chicago Bulls got blown out the night after beating Cleveland, and the Indiana Pacers were left flat-footed in the second half of a loss at Dallas on Friday night.

Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari turned in one of his best games of the season with 21 points, including going 2 of 3 from beyond the arc and getting to the free throw line 10 times for nine points.

“That’s what I need to do every game,” Gallinari said. “The more I’m aggressive, the more I can make things happen for everybody else.”

The Mavs are coming off a shellacking at Houston on Saturday and are 2-5 in their last seven games with five losses coming by an average margin of 15.6 points. They got off to another slow start against James Harden and the Rockets and could never recover.

“You know, it’s real tough when you have a night like (Friday) night and you put things together and you can propel,” Barnes told reporters after the 109-87 loss at Houston. “And then 24 hours later, it’s another slow start. For three quarters, we played decent basketball. But when you start off that way, it’s hard to get one.”

Dallas has had issues with slow starts all season. The Mavs gave up 36 points in the first quarter at Houston, forcing them to play from behind throughout.

“It’s tough giving up 36 points,” Matthews told reporters after the game. “We fought, we fought back, but we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Dallas will again be without starters forward Dirk Nowitzki (right Achilles strain) and center Andrew Bogut (right knee), plus reserve guard J.J. Barea (left calf strain).

Dallas is getting the bulk of its offense from shooting guard Wesley Matthews and forward Harrison Barnes. Matthews has made at least four 3-pointers in each of the last eight games, including 25 in the last five games, and Barnes leads the team in scoring at 20.6 points per game.

The Mavs are desperate to get wins at home with seven of their next 11 games coming on the road.

WASHINGTON — Neither the Denver Nuggets nor Washington Wizards will enter Thursday’s first head-to-head matchup feeling upbeat.

The Nuggets (8-14) lost 116-111 Wednesday night on the road to a five-win Brooklyn Nets. At least Denver can take pride in rallying from a 29-point deficit as they outscored Brooklyn 48-24 over the final 17:56. Despite that late effort and closing within 111-109 with 16.9 seconds, the Nuggets lost for the fourth time in five games.

“I told our team at halftime that Brooklyn was on pace for 84 points in the paint, which just shows signs of no resistance, no fight,” Denver coach Mike Malone said. “But I tell you, I am proud of our guys, getting down by 29 points and cutting it to three or four, whatever it was late. We got a couple of good shots that just didn’t go down for us but we didn’t roll over. Twenty-nine points didn’t become 50 and I’m happy about that.”

There was anything but happiness for the Wizards (7-13) following Tuesday’s 124-116 loss to the Orlando Magic. John Wall scored a career-high 52 points, but had little help most of the game. The real issues for Washington, which has lost three of four, came defensively. The Magic set a season high for points in the win.

“Not even just defensive effort, just playing hard,” Wall said. “Our job is to wake up and just play hard. Before you made it to the NBA or got a college scholarship, you played hard to get where you wanted to get to. To still be talking about playing hard. … That’s the easiest thing. Shouldn’t have to do with any contracts or any money. Just come in and play basketball.”

Asked why that isn’t happening, Wall said, “I don’t know. If I had the answers we wouldn’t be in this situation right now.”

Orlando shot 51.8 percent overall from the field, 12 of 26 from beyond the arc and led by as many as 20 points.

“We have to be able to sustain a sense of urgency possession by possession,” Brooks continued. “It was spotty at best. Until we do that, we’re going to put ourselves in a bad position.”

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 27 points against the Nets. He also led the comeback, which began soon after Malone was ejected for arguing a foul with an official as Denver trailed by 21 points midway through the third quarter.

“When he got ejected, that was the plan, to try to get something going,” Chandler said. “We were down. There was nothing happening and I think that kind of lit a fire under us.”

Led by Chandler, the Nuggets’ bench scored 70 points against the Nets, which is three less than the 73 the Magic’s second unit scored against Wizards.

Denver averaged 116.5 points during a two-game sweep over Washington last season.

Philadelphia had its home game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday postponed due to condensation on the court because of the ice beneath and was crushed by the Orlando Magic on Friday before coming up just short in a 107-106 loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday. “There is a hint of reality,” 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters of his team putting up a better effort on Saturday. “The group that we have wanted to make amends, and we almost had a win against a very good team.” Denver dropped three straight and five of its last six after opening a six-game road trip with a 105-98 setback at Utah on Saturday. The Nuggets will not face a team with a winning record the rest of the trip and were happy with the way they competed against the Jazz to make it a tight game after falling well off the pace in the third quarter.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (7-13): Denver shooting guard Jamal Murray was named the Western Conference rookie of the month for October/November but is struggling to carry the momentum into December. The 19-year-old Kentucky product is 1-of-11 from the field in two games this month and committed three turnovers while going scoreless in 18 minutes on Saturday. Fellow shooting guard Will Barton, who sat out the last three games of November to rest an ankle injury, picked up the slack by totaling 37 points on 15-of-31 shooting in the last two contests.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (4-16): Center Joel Embiid is the rookie getting most of the headlines, but rookie forward Dario Saric is also starting to emerge for Philadelphia. Saric matched a season high with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting against the Celtics and added 12 rebounds for his third double-double. “I prepared a little more for this game,” Saric told reporters. “I tried to give my best. I tried to play my best. I tried to think before everything happened.”

Miami Heat vs Denver Nuggets

As the Denver Nuggets have tried to find footing through injuries and inconsistency, one thing has emerged for this team: Wilson Chandler has become their best player.

Chandler may be the best-kept secret early in the NBA season. Even though he has primarily come off the bench, he is averaging a team-high 18.3 points, with 7.7 rebounds, after missing all of 2015-16 due to a hip injury.

In short, he has become the most invaluable player for Denver.

“It’s too early to start talking about sixth man of the year and all of that stuff,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told The Denver Post. “But he’s been our MVP.”

Chandler has been lights out of late. In the last eight games, he is averaging 21.8 points and 8.6 rebounds while the rotation has been in constant flux. In that time Danilo Gallinari, Will Barton, Gary Harris and Juancho Hernangomez have been out with injuries at various points.

Chandler has been the rock for Denver (7-10), and he will try to continue that play against the Miami Heat on Wednesday night.

“He’s probably playing at one of the highest levels in the league right now,” point guard Emmanuel Mudiay told The Denver Post. “He’s a mismatch problem. Him playing (power forward) is helping us a lot. He’s making tough shots.”

The Nuggets may get reinforcements for their game Wednesday night. Gallinari (thigh), Hernangomez (ankle) and Barton (personal reasons) practiced Monday. Gallinari has missed the last three games and Hernangomez two straight.

The Heat are coming off two straight home losses as they embark on a three-game Western Conference road swing. They were bolstered by the return of Wayne Ellington in a loss to Boston on Monday.

His shooting from the 3-point line could help inject some life into Miami’s perimeter shooting.

“I know I can help in that area,” Ellington, who had been out since the preseason finale due to a thigh bruise, told the Sun-Sentinel. “And that’s really what I do. I’ll continue to catch my rhythm and get better while I’m out there.”

The Heat (5-12) are still trying to figure things out after star Dwyane Wade signed with Chicago in the summer. Things will be tough with the absence of Dion Waiters (groin) and Justise Winslow (left wrist), who both didn’t make the trip.

Center Hassan Whiteside, who had an MRI on his sore left knee Monday, and point guard Goran Dragic, who had 27 points and 17 assists in the loss to the Celtics, are also ailing. Whiteside told the Sun-Sentinel the MRI came back negative.

“It eased my mind a lot,” he said. “Because it was very painful. It was bothering me, so it’s just swelling and I’m going to stay on it and just keep icing it and taking care of my knees.”

The Heat will need his rebounding against Denver’s active frontcourt. Kenneth Faried has played well since being put back in the starting lineup for Nikola Jokic, and 7-footer Jusuf Nurkic is a load in the middle.

The biggest concern for Miami should be Chandler, who is feeling healthy and enjoying a career year after injuries cost him 153 games since his first full season in Denver in 2011-2012.

“I was derailed a lot. It happens,” he told The Denver Post. “It’s part of the game. So this is the first time I was able to come back fully healthy, start the season off 100 percent. And I was able to work on my game.”

President Josh Kroenke said in a release Friday that he looks forward to D’Alessandro’s assistance in ”creating additional synergy between our business and team operations to help take our organization to another level on and off the playing floor.”

D’Alessandro returns to the Nuggets’ front office after spending the last two seasons as GM of the Sacramento Kings.

The Nuggets are still searching for a head coach after firing Brian Shaw in March. Melvin Hunt served as an interim coach and remains a strong candidate for the job.

In addition, Kroenke promoted Greg Sherman to a similar position with the Colorado Avalanche. Sherman was the team’s assistant GM last season.

Sources told us that the Nuggets are now getting strong consideration from Miller along with the early frontrunners in the race to sign him: Oklahoma City and Memphis.

Miller, according to sources, met face-to-face Friday with new Grizzlies owner Robert Pera and CEO Jason Levien after an earlier sitdown with Thunder general manager Sam Presti. Sources said that Thunder All-Star Kevin Durant and Grizzlies All-Star Marc Gasol have both taken an active role in recruiting Miller, who has received interest from a number of contenders after being released earlier this week by the Miami Heat via the amnesty provision.

The Nuggets have joined the hunt, sources said, with the promise of minutes at the wing positions after losing two key performers in that department — Andre Iguodala and Corey Brewer — in free agency.

Most of the teams pursuing Miller are offering a minimum salary but pitching the opportunity to take on a prominent role as a perimeter specialist on a championship contender.

The Houston Rockets, sources said, have also made Miller an offer that the 33-year-old is considering.
