The option for the 21-year-old Turner is for a fourth year. The Pacers hope the 6-foot-11 youngster will become the long-term face of the franchise. Last season, he averaged 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds and was second in the league in blocks (172).

The Pacers picked up a third-year option for Sabonis, a 2016 first-round draft pick who was traded to Indiana by Oklahoma City along with Victor Oladipo as part of the deal for Paul George.

The Denver Nuggets might be losing a home game at Pepsi Center, but the way they are playing, switching venues might be a good thing.

Even if it is across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Nuggets, losers of five straight, “host” the Indiana Pacers at the O2 Arena in London on Thursday. The NBA Global Game counts as a home game for Denver, and that might be true — in a way. Four players on the roster are from Europe, so this is as close to an NBA home game for many of those players.

“It will be a true honor and a great experience to represent both the Nuggets and the NBA in London as part of the NBA Global Games in 2017,” forward Danilo Gallinari, who is from Italy, told the team website. “Our entire team and organization are looking forward to this opportunity to showcase our league to fans overseas.”

This is the seventh regular-season NBA game to be played in London and the first since last Jan. 14, when the Toronto Raptors beat the Orlando Magic.

The Pacers (20-18) are trending in a different direction than the Nuggets (14-23). Indiana has won five straight, thanks in part to a commitment to share the ball. The Pacers recorded at least 23 assists in each of the past seven games to move above the .500 mark.

Point guard Jeff Teague has been the catalyst in the recent success. He had 17 assists in a win over the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 30 and added a double-double with 21 points and 15 assists in a victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 5.

The recent winning streak has the Pacers feeling good, and they are enjoying their time in London. They went sightseeing to noted tourist attractions such as Big Ben and Westminster Abbey and dined at Kensington Palace.

Once the ball tips at 8 p.m. local time Thursday, the Pacers plan on being all business.

“We don’t want to lose sight of what this trip was about,” Paul George told The Indianapolis Star before the team’s practice Wednesday in London. “This trip is to come over here and win a game. It just so happens we play it here in London. That’s really what that focus has been, to keep this groove going.”

While Indiana wants to keep grooving, the Nuggets want to get out of their rut. They had predictable losses during the streak to the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs, but home losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings have hurt their dream of making it to the playoffs for the first time in four years.

They will need to play better defense if they want to snap their skid. The Nuggets have allowed opponents to score an average of 123.8 points the past five game, with all five opponents scoring at least 120 points.

“We can’t be a team that just relies on our offense to pick up our defense,” Denver coach Michael Malone said after a recent loss. “We have to bring our defense every night regardless if you’re making shots.”

Denver players also toured London, taking in the sights between practices. The Nuggets should be close to full strength if Nikola Jokic has recovered from the illness that kept him out of the Saturday loss at Oklahoma City and if Kenneth Faried’s back holds up.

They will need everybody if they want to stop two streaks in London — their losing streak and Indiana’s winning streak.

“It’s definitely getting frustrating,” Denver forward Wilson Chandler said. “We’ve got to figure out some way to get out of it, and it’s going to be on the defensive end.”

New York Knicks vs. Indiana Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers will host the New York Knicks in an Eastern Conference showdown on Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Pacers (19-18) have won four straight games, which is their longest winning streak of the season.

The teams matched up in New York last month and the Knicks put together a come-from-behind win, 118-111 behind Carmelo Anthony’s 35 points.

Indiana led by as many as 15 points in that game, but New York put together a huge run in the fourth quarter. The Pacers, however, have been much better on their home floor this season (14-5), presenting the Knicks with a big challenge.

Paul George has been on fire lately, averaging 28.6 points in his last five games. The Pacers are 10-2 this season when George scores 25 or more points.

The Pacers have averaged 117.5 points per game during their four-game win streak, including 121 points in their previous win over the Nets.

George credits better ball movement for the recent hot stretch. “Before, it was guys doing everything on their own,” George told The Indianapolis Star. “Now, it’s more organized. We move the ball and we know who has a good look and there’s not selfishness in the shot selection.”

Point guard Jeff Teague has also been on fire of late, averaging 16.7 points and 10.7 assists per game in January. He averaged 16 points and 8.9 assists in December.

“Coach pulled me aside a couple weeks ago and told me he wants me to move the ball and he wants me to try to get in the lane and kick out,” Teague said. “I think it just became contagious. We’re all just trying to get it to the open man and get our teammates open shots.”

The Knicks (17-19) just snapped a six-game losing streak by defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 116-111 on Friday night.

Kristaps Porzingis returned after missing the previous three games and scored 24 points. The Knicks trailed by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter and came back to win.

Playing on a back-to-back after a comeback win won’t be an easy task, but the Knicks are just glad to be back in the win column again.

“This club’s going through adversity right now,” Knicks center Joakim Noah said. “There’s no question about it. Losing sucks. We’ve just got to bounce back.”

“Making strides, that’s all you can ask,” Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said. “If we continue to do that, we’re going to win games.”

Both teams are averaging 105 points per game this season, but the Knicks have given up more to their opponents.

They’ve given up 100 or more points in seven consecutive games.

The Pacers have defeated the Knicks in eight straight games when playing in Indianapolis. New York is just 6-12 on the road so far this season.

Rodney Stuckey (hamstring) is still out for the Pacers. The Knicks expect to be fully healthy.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Indiana Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers will host the Charlotte Hornets in an Eastern Conference showdown on Monday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and the Hornets hope to have their top player.

Guard Kemba Walker suffered a left knee contusion Saturday night against Cleveland, but said he expects to play Monday night.

“It’s not bad at all,” Walker said. “At the moment it looked pretty bad, but I’m good.”

Walker has scored 20 or more points in six of the past nine games.

The Pacers (12-12) are coming off a big comeback win over Portland on Saturday night. They gave up 71 points at halftime and trailed by 20 at one point, but still managed to come back and win the game.

Paul George outscored the Blazers by himself in the fourth quarter, putting 15 points on the board in those final 12 minutes. He had 37 points for the game.

“I’m supposed to be trusted in those situations,” George said. “That’s the guy I want to be for this team.”

Indiana coach Nate McMillan is hoping his team will find some consistency.

“When you play the game the right way, you get rewarded for that,” McMillan said. “Turnovers and one-on-one ball won’t get it done. We’ve got to bring consistency to both ends of the floor every night.”

Indiana may be without starting guard Monta Ellis. He left the Portland game with a sore groin and is listed as questionable.

The Pacers have been around the .500 mark all season, but have been a lot better team at home (9-4) compared to the road (3-8).

The Charlotte Hornets (14-10) have actually been a little better on the road (6-4) than at home (8-6) this season and they’ve been a tough matchup for the Pacers in recent years.

They already defeated the Pacers earlier this season, 122-100 in Charlotte. The Hornets also swept the three-game season series against Indiana last season.

In their first matchup of this season, Charlotte got to the line 32 times, while the Pacers took just 15 attempts.

The Hornets just had their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers 116-105. They were unable to contain LeBron James, who scored 44 points.

“I’m just disappointed in the way we started,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “You can’t let those guys get easy ones early. That’s when you have problems.”

Roy Hibbert will be playing his first game in Indiana against his former team. When he played with the Lakers last season, he was injured and didn’t play the game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Hibbert spent his first seven seasons with the Pacers.

On the other side, Al Jefferson will be playing against his former team as well. He spent the last three seasons as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

Both teams are in the top half of the league in points per game, assists, and pace of play. The Hornets have shown better defense for the season, but that will be put to the test against the red-hot George.

These teams won’t meet again until they play twice in the month of March.

It was Golden State’s eighth win by at least 20 points and it ran the squad’s record streak of regular-season games without consecutive losses to 106. “We’re a bunch of real pros. We don’t have letups that often, but when we do, we respond the best we can,” guard Klay Thompson told reporters. “I thought tonight was a perfect example of that. I don’t know how long we can keep that streak alive. It’s really impressive; I’m not going to lie.” Stephen Curry led the way with 31 points and Thompson added 26 as Golden State shot a season-best 62.8 percent and made a phenomenal 14 of its 21 3-point attempts, also a season high. The Warriors gave the Pacers their worst home loss in franchise history with a 120-83 triumph last month but Indiana has recovered to win three of five and star forward Paul George returned from back and ankle injuries in an impressive 111-102 win at the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

ABOUT THE PACERS (10-10): George had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals against the Clippers in his first action since Nov. 23. Six others reached double figures in scoring, led by forward Thaddeus Young (17 points) and reserve guard Rodney Stuckey, who matched George with 16 points in just 21 minutes. In addition to George, starting center Myles Turner and backup forward C.J. Miles also missed the loss to the Warriors earlier this season and scored in double figures against the Clippers.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (17-3): Not that Curry, Thompson and Kevin Durant ever need much help on the offensive end, but the team must have enjoyed seeing reserve big men David West and JaVale McGee get more into the act in Saturday’s rout. McGee recorded a season-high 11 points in only 13 minutes while West reached double figures for the first time this season, also in 13 minutes. Golden State is 9-1 on the road and opens a five-game trip at the Clippers on Wednesday.

Indiana Pacers vs Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers seem determined to improve their defensive performance, beginning Wednesday night with a home date against the Indiana Pacers.

On Monday, 12 hours after a 130-114 drubbing by the Houston Rockets, the Trail Blazers began to lay the foundation with a video session and a spirited practice focused on defense.

“This is the first time we’ve had a real practice in what seems like forever,” point guard Damian Lillard said. “It was good for us to try to sharpen up, (to have) coaches challenge us.

“It’s to the point now where our pride has to kick in. We have to show how much we actually care about … being better defensively.”

The Rockets scorched the Blazers with 56.1 percent shooting, including 47.2 percent (17 for 36) from 3-point range. Portland owns the worst defensive efficiency rating in the NBA (109.80) and is giving up more points (113.7) than any team in the league other than Brooklyn (114.0).

The Blazers (9-10) are tired of talking about getting better at the defensive end.

“We keep preaching it, but it’s getting old,” guard Allen Crabbe said. “At some point, it has to click. We keep telling ourselves we have to get better, but at some point, we have to get it going.”

The Blazers are one of the better offensive teams in the NBA, but they have trouble stopping anybody. Cleveland blitzed them for 137 points, Golden State for 127, Houston for 126 and 130, even Phoenix for 121.

“We scored 125 points against Cleveland,” Lillard said. “That’s a lot of points to score and not win a game. Right now, we’re not getting it done on the defensive end. That’s what it comes down to.

“We’re going to put points on the board, but we have to find a way to get better at coming up with more stops. If (an opponent’s) execution gets harder, the (shooting) percentage is going to go down. We have to make them more uncomfortable more consistently.”

Indiana, meanwhile, begins a five-game road trip coming off impressive back-to-back routs at home of the Brooklyn Nets (118-97) and the Los Angeles Clippers (91-70). The wins were achieved without the services of star forward Paul George, who has missed six of the past seven games — and will also sit out Wednesday’s contest — with ankle and back injuries.

The Pacers also emphasize defense, led by point guard Jeff Teague, who ranks fourth in the NBA in steals at 2.11 per game.

“I have to be aggressive defensively and do my best to ignite and get guys going by pressuring the ball,” Teague told the media. “Everything else will take care of itself. (The last two games) we’re moving the ball better, guys are making shots and guys are playing with confidence.”

Coach Nate McMillan is striving for consistency in both effort and performance.

“We talked about not taking steps back,” McMillan said. “We’ve played some good games, and then you can’t recognize the team the next game. We need to build some momentum at this point in the season.”

McMillan has been impressed with the work of 20-year-old center Myles Turner, who averaged 16.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots the last two games going up against Brook Lopez and DeAndre Jordan.

“Hey, welcome to the center position in the NBA: (Atlanta’s) Dwight Howard to Brook to Jordan the last three games,” McMillan said. “They’re big, powerful guys. (Turner) is still developing and growing into that position, defending the basket. He’s working. That’s the one thing he brings to the floor every night.”

Saving their season would be more about effort than execution.

“Tonight it was just one of them days where you just got to leave it out there on the basketball court,” Carmelo Anthony said.

Now they have to do it two more times.

Anthony scored 28 points and the Knicks avoided elimination in the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 85-75 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Reserves J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland each had 13 points for the Knicks, who trail 3-2 and will need a victory Saturday in Indiana to force a seventh game back here Monday. They are trying to become the ninth NBA team to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series.

“I was totally impressed because we met the challenge,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “I think as a coach you come into games like this and you want to see who’s going to step up and make plays, and I thought we did that tonight. We were the better team in terms of doing that.”

Anthony, who didn’t make a basket in the fourth quarter of either game in Indiana, made a jumper midway through the fourth quarter after Indiana closed within four points. He followed with two free throws, Raymond Felton made a layup, and the Knicks were never in jeopardy again.

Paul George had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Pacers. They played without point guard George Hill because of a concussion and committed 19 turnovers.

“We’ve just got to play more solid. There’s no other way to put it,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said.

George battled foul trouble and couldn’t contain Anthony quite as well as he had while the Pacers easily won the previous two games.

Anthony made his first two shots as New York raced to a 7-0 lead in a game it never trailed. He finished only 12 of 28, but got plenty of bench help.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well but we made shots at the crucial time,” Anthony said.

David West had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, who were trying to reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2004.

“We didn’t play well. It was a bad game for us and we were still there,” George said.

The winner will face the defending NBA champion Miami Heat in a series that will start Wednesday.

New York didn’t really shake its scoring slump, shooting only 41 percent from the field, but put together a few runs during the game to open just enough space against a Pacers team that shot 36 percent and was a dismal 19 of 33 at the free throw line.

They clearly missed Hill after learning about four hours before the game they would be without him.

Vogel said Hill was hurt after a collision with Knicks center Tyson Chandler during the first half of Indiana’s 93-82 victory on Tuesday. Hill finished the game and scored 26 points, but experienced some headaches and showed concussion symptoms since and wasn’t able to pass the league’s concussion tests in order to play Thursday night.

The Knicks went back to their regular lineup, reinserting Pablo Prigioni, after going with a bigger group in Game 4 in a futile effort to match Indiana on the boards. The smaller group did a better job, getting outrebounded only 43-40.

“We’re not going to go out without fighting,” Chandler said.

The Knicks finally opened it up midway through the third quarter with a 12-4 run, started by Smith’s bank shot and featuring a 3-pointer and follow shot from Copeland, who got more playing time while Woodson gave little to veterans Amar’e Stoudemire and the slumping Jason Kidd, who missed his only shot and remains scoreless in the series.

“Coaching is a feel. It’s not always what players want at the end of the day, it’s about winning,” Woodson said. “That’s all I’m in it for.”

Anthony made a jumper and a 3-pointer on his first two shots, and Iman Shumpert followed with another jumper for a 7-0 start. Smith got a big ovation when he checked in, which grew much louder when he made his first shot, dribbling back behind the arc for a 3-pointer that made it 17-12 with 2:56 left in the opening quarter.

Smith has endured a miserable stretch since elbowing Boston’s Jason Terry in the fourth quarter of Game 3 in the first round. Suspended for Game 4, he hasn’t relocated his shot since, hitting 28 percent in the first four games and has been criticized for not being focused after he was seen out a nightclub with singer Rihanna the night before Game 1 — a day game.

He was only 4 of 11, but hit the jumper that started the Knicks’ run in the third quarter.

“Still didn’t shoot the best but it always helps coming home and playing in front of these fans,” Smith said. “Hopefully the little bit of rhythm that I did get carries me over.”

The Knicks extended their 19-15 lead after one to 32-23 on Copeland’s 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining in the second. The Pacers chipped away for most of the half but couldn’t take the large in part because of their sloppy free throw shooting, going 8 of 16 in the half that agonizingly wouldn’t end when both Chandler and the Pacers’ Sam Young committed fouls more than 30 feet from the basket in the final 2.4 seconds.

Game notes
Kidd is 0 for 8 in the series, part of a 0-for-17 skid that began with Game 3 against Boston in the first round. The 40-year-old point guard, surely headed for the Hall of Fame, is 3 of 25 in the postseason and hasn’t scored since hitting a 3-pointer against the Celtics in Game 2 on April 23.
