Could Sunday be the last hurrah for veteran quarterback Philip Rivers?

Addressing the uncertain nature beyond the host Indianapolis Colts’ Week 17 game against the skidding Jacksonville Jaguars, Rivers acknowledged the thought crossed his mind.

With the Colts (10-5) needing a victory against the Jaguars (1-14) plus a loss from either the Cleveland Browns (10-5), Baltimore Ravens (10-5), Miami Dolphins (10-5) or Tennessee Titans (10-5) to make the AFC playoffs, Indianapolis’ postseason prospects aren’t the only “What if” swirling around town.

“I guess it’s probably healthy to have that thought because, shoot, you’re not guaranteed anything moving forward,” Rivers said. “But to think it could be the last game, the last game I ever play, certainly. I don’t intend it will be, I don’t hope that it is, but you have to acknowledge it is a possibility.”

Rivers, 39, signed a one-year contract with the Colts in the offseason following a 16-season career with the Chargers franchise. Still, coach Frank Reich admitted this season he could see the Colts bringing Rivers back, were he interested.

Behind Rivers’ 23 touchdowns and 68.2 completion percentage against just 10 interceptions — half his total from 2019 — the Colts rank eighth in the NFL in passing yards per game (259.3) and ninth in scoring at 28.2 points per game.

Rivers will aim to stay upright Sunday with a shuffled offensive line. The Colts, who are coming off a 28-24 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 16, announced Wednesday that left tackle Anthony Castonzo (knee) will be out for the remainder of the season.

Jacksonville earned its lone win of 2020 with a 27-20 home victory against the Colts in the season opener. Rivers was 36 of 46 for 363 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, outshined by Jaguars counterpart Gardner Minshew II, who had one incompletion in 20 attempts while passing for173 yards and three touchdowns.

Jaguars rookie running back James Robinson rushed for 62 yards on 16 carries in his NFL debut en route to a 1,070-yard, seven-touchdown season that ultimately was cut short. After missing Jacksonville’s Week 16 home loss to Chicago with a left ankle injury that hampered him the previous week, the Jaguars announced Wednesday that Robinson would be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Robinson fell just 35 yards shy of breaking the league rushing record for an undrafted rookie.

“I could never, ever say enough about that guy, how hard he’s tried,” Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said. “He wants to come back. He wants to play.”

The same could be said for a healthy Minshew, but Marrone has confirmed that veteran Mike Glennon will start under center in the season finale, completing a quarterback carousel that saw Minshew, rookie Jake Luton and Glennon split starts after Minshew started the first seven games.

Glennon was 24-for-37 for 211 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 41-17 loss to the Bears, and he figures to have a depleted core of weapons against the Colts. Marrone said wide receiver Collin Johnson (hamstring) would be out Sunday, while fellow wideout D.J. Chark (shin) didn’t practice Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts have been moving in opposite directions lately yet will have plenty in common Sunday when they meet at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field.

The 11-3 Steelers have clinched a spot in the playoffs, due to their 11-0 start, but have lost three in a row and need one more victory to secure the AFC North title.

The 10-4 Colts have won three consecutive and seven of their past nine, with their own spot in the playoffs pending a victory, coupled with a loss by Miami or Baltimore this weekend.

Pittsburgh was the last undefeated team by several weeks, but the three-game losing streak, all by fewer than 20 points, has brought with it a good deal of unrest.

Fingers have been pointing toward the offense, and specifically quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger has heard the questions and the criticisms. He doesn’t or can’t throw downfield anymore; he gets rid of the ball too quickly; he doesn’t see open receivers; at 38 he’s nearing the end. TO that, he offered a succinct response.

“I don’t blame them,” he said. “When you play like poo, you should get talked about like that. I need to play better. If I’m not giving them a reason to talk good, then I’m giving them a reason to talk badly. That’s all on me. I need to play better.”

Roethlisberger gave barely a glancing measure of blame at the rest of the offense.

“We all need to perform better, and it starts with me,” he said. “I have to complete passes, if that’s the call. If it’s run, then we have to get hats on hats, if you will. Once again … if I had an answer to it, we wouldn’t be having these issues. We can’t fix anything until we get out there on Sunday, really.”

Roethlisberger revealed that the Steelers had a players meeting Wednesday that was heavy on the offensive side but insisted “it had nothing to do with the losses. It had everything to do with where we are, and where we’re going. It wasn’t a players-only panic meeting.”

Defensive tackle Cam Heyward agreed that Pittsburgh isn’t panicking.

“It’s a three-game losing streak, but that’s coming off an 11-game winning streak,” Heyward said. “I’m looking forward to getting back on this horse.”

The game matches Roethlisberger and a fellow veteran in Indianapolis quarterback Philip Rivers.

“The similarities are they’ve both been incredibly durable. They’ve both been incredibly productive,” Colts coach Frank Reich said. “They’ve been incredibly effective in the pocket.”

That’s just one storyline.

“These are the games you dream about — going to Pittsburgh in December with something on the line,” Rivers said.

It doesn’t matter to Indianapolis what each team has done lately.

“When you go on the road this late in the season and in this means of a game, it’s going to take a complete team effort,” Reich said.

Steelers linebacker Vince Williams was reinstated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, which could give a boost to a position that has been in flux in terms of personnel availability.

In addition, running back James Conner (quadriceps) practiced Wednesday after missing a game. However, tight end Eric Ebron (back), defensive end Stephon Tuitt (back) and linebackers Marcus Allen (stinger), Ulysees Gilbert III (ankle), and Ola Adeniyi (shoulder) didn’t practice.

For Indianapolis, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (ankle) didn’t practice Wednesday, but that was considered precautionary after he returned from that injury last weekend.

Also sitting out practice were tackle Anthony Castonzo (knee) and receiver Marcus Johnson (quadriceps), along with Rivers, who simply is following his regular routine, Reich said.

The Tennessee Titans authored one of the more impressive Week 1 victories and will try to start 2-0 for the first time in 11 years when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Behind a defense that forced three turnovers and recorded five sacks, the Titans rolled to a 43-13 victory at Cleveland, a popular preseason pick that was favored by nearly a touchdown over Tennessee.

Marcus Mariota threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns — two to tight end Delanie Walker — as the Titans stunned a legion of Browns fans itching to see their team live up to its hype. “It’s really all about us,” Mariota told reporters after the win. “All the outside noise, all those things that people say you can’t control. We don’t focus on that at all. It was a great team win.” The Colts won both meetings with the Titans a year ago by an average of 22 points, but they’ll come in as slight underdogs after dropping a 30-24 decision in overtime at the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Marlon Mack was the star for Indianapolis with 174 rushing yards and a touchdown.

ABOUT THE COLTS (0-1): Jacoby Brissett made his first start since 2017 in last Sunday’s loss to the Chargers and performed admirably, completing 21-of-27 passes for 190 yards and two TDs with no interceptions. “He made good decisions, he was accurate and he made those decisions quick,” offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni told the media. “He had to because they had good edge rushers on the edge coming after him. So I can’t say enough of how poised he was in those situations. He played like a veteran. He played like he had played for 10 years.” T.Y. Hilton, who had 155 receiving yards and two TDs in the one of the meetings with the Titans in 2018, hauled in eight catches for 87 yards and two scores in Week 1.

ABOUT THE TITANS (1-0): Defensive end Cameron Wake had 2.5 sacks — one for a safety — at Cleveland and the 37-year-old was awarded AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts, which included his 100th career sack. Rookie wideout A.J. Brown stood out on the offensive end with three catches for 100 yards, while running back Derrick Henry had a 75-yard TD catch and 84 yards and a score on the ground. Mariota sat out one meeting with the Colts last year and threw for a season-low 85 yards in the other encounter, a 38-10 loss at Indianapolis.

The Houston Texans can take another big step toward clinching the AFC South when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. A 10th straight win for the Texans would eliminate the Colts from contention in the division and leave only the Tennessee Titans, who won Thursday against Jacksonville to get within 2 1/2 games, as a contender for the top spot.

Hilton (shoulder) and tight end Eric Ebron (back) — the team’s top two receiving threats — are unable to go.

One team hopes to claw its way back into contention in its division and the other just hopes to scratch out a much-needed victory when the Indianapolis Colts visit the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Colts ended a four-game slide with a dominant win over Buffalo last week while the Raiders spent their bye week licking their wounds after being trounced by Seattle in London.

Offense has not been a problem of late for Indianapolis, which has scored at least 34 points in three of its last four contests. Despite their disappointing start to the season, the Indianapolis Colts find themselves only two games behind the other three teams in the AFC South in the standings. The Colts hope to gain ground on at least one of their division rivals when they host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Indianapolis split its first two games of 2018 before losing four straight, including a 42-34 road decision against the New York Jets last week. But the other three clubs in the AFC South own 3-3 records, and with a victory over Buffalo, the Colts will climb within one game of at least one of them as Houston and Jacksonville square off in Week 7. The arm feels good,” the 35-year-old Anderson told the team’s website. “Mentally, we’re working on putting a lot of hours in just trying to catch up with (the offense).” Buffalo is hoping to receive a strong performance by its defense, which has climbed from 18th in the league against the run to eighth over the last four weeks and leads the league with seven fumble recoveries.

The 21-year-old Darnold threw for three touchdowns in an impressive 34-16 victory over the Denver Broncos last Sunday to help New York snap a three-game slide and his steady — if not spectacular — start has garnered some positive attention. “One of the first observations is it looks like the real deal,” Colts head coach Frank Reich told reporters of Darnold. “Love his body language. I like the energy I see from him on the field. Just looks like he belongs in that regard and all those little intangibles. It’s funny. You see certain quarterbacks, they have a look and feel to them on the field. You see that in Sam.” Reich also sees it in his quarterback, Andrew Luck, who has completed 78 passes for 829 yards and seven TDs over the last two weeks alone. Both efforts came in defeat, however, and Indianapolis enters Sunday hoping to avoid a four-game losing streak.

ABOUT THE COLTS (1-4): Indianapolis has been off since a 38-24 loss at New England on Oct. 4, a much-needed break for a quarterback who threw the ball 121 times in a five-day span between Week 4 and Week 5, the result of slow starts that forced Luck to play catch-up. “Let’s not get behind, let’s play good, sound football, let’s not beat ourselves in all three phases,” Reich told reporters. “Let’s stay in the game, don’t get behind, stay patient with the runs and then have some success early with the run game that gives you the confidence to keep going back to it.” Whenever Luck does go to the air Sunday, he likely won’t have top receiver T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) for the second straight week while tight end Jack Doyle (hip) is expected to miss his fourth consecutive game.

ABOUT THE JETS (2-3): Isaiah Crowell ran for a franchise-record 219 yards and Robby Anderson had 123 receiving yards against the Broncos, with the latter enjoying the breakout game after a slow start that followed a tumultuous offseason. “Robby is a worker,” head coach Todd Bowles told reporters of Anderson, who was targeted a career high-tying 12 times against the Colts two years ago. “He just kept his head down. He knew his time was coming. He just worked and kept his head down and tried to do all of the little things to help the team win. I was proud of him about that.” Crowell missed practice Wednesday due to an ankle injury but is expected to play, while cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson (quadriceps) and Buster Skrine (concussion) are question marks.

The Washington Redskins’ defense was impressive in a Week 1 win at Arizona but it will be tested in the coming weeks by a string of top-notch quarterbacks, beginning with Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts, who visit the nation’s capital for a matchup Sunday. The Redskins held the Cardinals to 68 yards rushing and forced a pair of turnovers in a dominating 24-6 win last Sunday.

“I think any coach has that vision,” Washington coach Jay Gruden told reporters. “That’s what pro football is all about: your ability to run the ball and stop the run. And we’re getting there. We’ve got a long way to go, but I’m happy the way this game ended.” The Redskins will now face Luck – who was solid in his return from a shoulder injury that robbed him of the entire 2017 season – followed by star signal-callers Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Cam Newton over the next four contests.
