In less than a week, Oregon went from understudy to center stage.

The Ducks got into the Pacific-12 Conference title game only because Washington had to drop out because of coronavirus concerns. Oregon made the most of the opportunity by defeating host USC 31-24 for the championship.

That gave the No. 25 Ducks (4-2) the Pac-12’s automatic berth to a New Year’s Six game. They’ll meet No. 10 Iowa State (8-3) in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2 in Glendale, Ariz.

“We fought this year,” said Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, who was named the MVP of the Pac-12 title game with five tackles and a sack. “So many trials and tribulations. So many things kept popping up. So many excuses we could have made, and we didn’t flinch. We stuck to the script and got it done.”

Oregon won its first three games before back-to-back losses to Oregon State and California. A matchup with Washington to determine the winner of the Pac-12 North was canceled, leaving the Ducks a half-game behind the Huskies and seemingly destined for a lower-tier bowl game.

That is, until a virus spike in Washington’s athletic department. The Huskies’ loss was the Ducks’ gain.

“We were itching to get back to our kind of football, and we did it (against USC),” Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. “(We) really just came out with an attitude, came out with a purpose and a mission.”

The Cyclones took a different path to their first January bowl game.

After losing their season opener to Louisiana, the Cyclones won seven of their next eight games before a 27-21 loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship.

“From our standpoint, this has been a really special season for our program as we continue to grow over the last couple of years,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “We’ve got a great senior class made up of 60 seniors that have really stayed the course in this program and really led us every step of the way.”

Iowa State has the nation’s leading rusher in Breece Hall, who totaled 1,436 yards and 19 touchdowns. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 2,594 yards and 18 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

“They’re an excellent, talented, well-coached football team that schematically runs more than a couple of things that are very different than what we’ve seen,” Cristobal said.

Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 1,480 yards and 13 touchdowns with five interceptions in six games. CJ Verdell, who was Oregon’s rushing leader in the regular season, missed the Pac-12 finale with a knee injury but could be back for the bowl game.

“When you say Oregon football, you have an immediate respect for who they are and what they’re about,” Campbell said.

It will be a homecoming for the quarterbacks, who both starred at Arizona high schools. Purdy played at Perry High in Gilbert and Shough at Hamilton High in neighboring Chandler. They met twice in high school, with Perry, led by Purdy, prevailing 65-63 and 63-60.

“Certainly a competitive situation at the high school level and now they get to do it at the collegiate level,” Cristobal said.

The Ducks will be making their third appearance in the Fiesta Bowl after beating Colorado in 2002 and Kansas State in 2013.

Kyler Murray could only watch from the sidelines last year as Iowa State overcame an early 14-point deficit to end its 18-game losing streak to Oklahoma. The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week will try to be one of the primary reasons the fifth-ranked Sooners continue their overwhelming success on the road in this rivalry on Saturday when they visit the Cyclones in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Kyle Kempt made his first career start in this game a season ago and threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 2:19 remaining as Iowa State stunned Oklahoma 38-31 – the Sooners’ only regular-season loss in 2017. Just like last season, the Cyclones will enter this contest coming off a low-scoring defeat, as they could muster only 188 total yards in their season-opening 13-3 loss to Iowa. Even without Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, who moved onto the NFL, Oklahoma is averaging 56 points in two games with Murray at the controls, including a 49-21 victory over UCLA last week. The Sooners have won 74 of the 82 meetings with Iowa State and own a 23-game winning streak in Ames dating back to 1960.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (2-0): Murray (28-of-44 with 515 yards and five touchdowns), who ranks second on the team with 95 rushing yards and third in the conference in total offense (303.5), may be asked to carry even more of the offense after leading rusher Rodney Anderson suffered a season-ending knee injury versus the Bruins. Freshman T.J. Pledger (14 carries, 83 yards), sophomore Trey Sermon (16, 82) and senior Marcelias Sutton (9, 71) have each seen action out of the backfield in each of the first two games and will be counted upon to carry a ground game averaging 247.5 yards. Sophomore CeeDee Lamb erupted for 146 yards receiving against UCLA and added 63 yards on two punt returns for a career-high 209 all-purpose yards last weekend.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (0-1): Kempt is “day-to-day” according to coach Matt Campbell after the senior was unable to return to the game after trying to play through and before ultimately succumbing to an ankle injury in the second half against Iowa. Sophomore running back David Montgomery was limited to 59 total yards versus the Hawkeyes and also held to 55 yards rushing on 17 carries in last year’s upset, but he set career highs with seven receptions and 89 yards versus the Sooners. Mike Rose recorded 11 tackles and a pass breakup while becoming the first Iowa State true freshman defender to start a season opener since 2006 last weekend, while fellow linebacker Willie Harvey added nine stops and is the team’s active leader in tackles for loss with 22.5.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Oklahoma’s .915 winning percentage against Iowa State is the best by one FBS program against another (minimum 50 games played).

2. Only one of the Cyclones’ last nine opponents has scored more than 20 points since their upset of the Sooners last season.

3. Oklahoma has won an FBS-high 16 consecutive true road games and a conference-record 14 straight Big 12 away contests.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Iowa State Cyclones

Coming off a lopsided and error-plagued 56-28 home loss to Oklahoma that ended its hopes of winning a Big 12 championship, 19th-ranked West Virginia will now try to rebound at suddenly red-hot Iowa State on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.

Two weeks ago the Cyclones (3-8, 2-6 Big 12) looked like the perfect opponent to play after a crushing loss. No more. Matt Campbell’s squad has won back-to-back Big 12 games for the first time since the 2013 season and come in off a record-setting 66-10 shellacking of Texas Tech.

Saturday’s contest also is Senior Day for Iowa State. Little wonder that West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen has told the Mountaineers (8-2, 5-2) to be ready for their “toughest week of the year.”

“We put a lot into (the Oklahoma) game, and it didn’t go the way we wanted it to,” Holgorsen said Tuesday. “We’re disappointed with it, but we’ve got a tough one on the road against Iowa State, and you saw what they did to Texas Tech. It’s going to be the toughest week of the year, but I’m anxious to see how the guys respond.

“One thing I know about this group is they’re going to continue to fight and continue to work. There’s no doubt in my mind they’re going to prepare and practice and put as much into it as they possibly can. I know they’re going to do that. With that said, it’s going to be a tough week.”

Despite the disappointing loss to the Sooners, the Mountaineers, who finish Big 12 play on Dec. 3 with a home game against slumping Baylor, still have plenty to play for.

The Mountaineers can still set a high for wins since joining the league in 2012. They can also win 10 games for the ninth time in school history. And if it can end Big 12 play with two wins and then pick up a victory in a bowl game, West Virginia can match its school record with a sixth 11-win season.

“We spent the majority of this year with this 2016 team with zero expectations,” Holgorsen said. “We’ve practiced and played pretty good throughout the course of this season. The pressure’s off. We didn’t get it done when it came to the Big 12, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not a lot to play for. I think this group rebounds and gets out there and gets ready to play another game. We’ve still got a lot to play for obviously. We’ll try to get win No. 9 this week.

“A lot of teams wish they were in that position.”

Iowa State comes in off one of its finest offensive performances in school history. The Cyclones set all-time school records for points against a conference opponent (66), margin of victory against a league opponent (56) and points in a quarter (31) and fell just three points short of most points in a half (48) with 45 in the first 30 minutes. Iowa State finished with 608 yards of total offense, its first 600-yard game since 2008.

“To be honest with you I thought we had a great week of practice, and we deserved the right to feel confident going into the football game to play well,” said Campbell, the 2015 Mid-American Conference coach of the year at Toledo, who is finishing up his first year in Ames. “I thought that was closest to the best 60 minutes we played completely this year. I’m really proud of our senior class. Those guys stayed the course and really allowed us to continue to get better as the season went on.”

It was the best game by far for the two Iowa State quarterbacks, each of whom did what he does best. Jacob Park threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, while Joel Lanning ran for 171 yards and five scores.

“(Texas Tech) played an entirely different defense than we expected or had seen on film,” Campbell said. “I think our ability to adapt within the game, our ability to execute, and the ability to have options is certainly great. I thought both Jacob and Joel played about as fluid and well executed game between the two as I have seen.”

The Cyclones have one more chance to build optimism for the final recruiting blitz and the upcoming 2017 season against a West Virginia team that enters with a Top 25 ranking but enough flaws to make an upset possible. Campbell isn’t under any illusions that the win last week is enough to finish with.

“Obviously, we’ve got one last big challenge left before this season ends,” Campbell said.
