After video showed the 7-foot-3 forward with a bloody forehead, the Mavericks said Sunday: “It is our understanding that Kristaps was jumped and assaulted outside of a club,” without providing further details.

Video of the aftermath of the incident obtained by TMZ showed an agitated Porzingis in a torn shirt, pushing someone out of the way and approaching a group of men before several people stopped him and urged him to calm down.

The 23-year-old Porzingis was acquired by Dallas in a blockbuster deal with the New York Knicks before the trading deadline but hasn’t played for the club. He missed the 2018-19 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee in what turned out to be his final game for the Knicks in February 2018.

Porzingis will be a restricted free agent July 1, and the Mavericks have said they intend to sign him to a long-term contract.

Carmelo Anthony and Courtney Lee were back in the starting lineup against Orlando after missing all or part of the last game, but the Knicks decided to give Porzingis another game to rest his injury. He says he felt better Monday and is hoping he can return Wednesday against Milwaukee.

Porzingis, second on the team with 20.1 points per game, says the injury began bothering him a little over a week ago and became more painful in the last couple of days. But he says team doctors checked him Monday and found nothing serious but wanted to keep him out to be cautious.

The New York Knicks forward will donate $500 for each of his blocked shots for the rest of the season to the RENS, a New York-area, not-for-profit youth basketball program.

The RENS will use the donations from the ”KrisStops” campaign for the Ben Jobe Educational and Scholarship Fund. It will help provide RENS participants with free tutoring, SAT prep and tuition money for students in third to eighth grades.

The 7-foot-3 Porzingis, who is averaging 1.2 blocks, will announce the initiative Saturday at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York. The program will begin with Sunday’s home game against Atlanta.

Jobe, the Knicks’ 83-year-old scout, won more than 530 games as a coach at seven black colleges and universities.
