Astros activate slugger George Springer off DL

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros have activated outfielder George Springer from the 15-day disabled list.

Springer has been out with a right wrist fracture since July 2, a day after he was hit by a pitch against the Royals. At the time he was hitting .264 with 14 doubles, 13 home runs, 29 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 75 games.

The Astros lead the AL West, but the gap has shrunk to two games over the Texas Rangers entering Friday’s games.

Houston also recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz from Double A Corpus Christi, bringing their active roster to 31.

Cubs’ Schwarber out 3-5 days with rib strain

CHICAGO (AP) Cubs rookie slugger Kyle Schwarber is expected to miss three to five days because of a mild rib cage strain.

He hurt himself on a checked swing during batting practice before Wednesday’s game against Cincinnati. The left-handed hitter hopes to be in the lineup Monday when Chicago opens a three-game series at St. Louis.

Manager Joe Maddon says the team is ”just going to chill a little bit right now and figure it out from there.” He doesn’t anticipate the injury being ”too bad.”

Schwarber is hitting .270 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs in 48 games.

He is a catcher who mostly has been playing left field. He was called up from Triple-A Iowa as a designated hitter in June for six interleague games, then recalled again July 17.

Entering Friday’s game against Arizona, Chicago holds the second spot in the NL wild-card race.

Fan struck by foul ball, taken off on stretcher at Wrigley

CHICAGO (AP) A fan was struck by a line-drive foul ball and taken away on a stretcher in the first inning of Sunday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field.

Kyle Schwarber lined a foul ball just beyond the camera well on the first base side, striking the fan. Cubs first base coach Brandon Hyde reacted by putting his hands on his helmet after he saw the fan get hit.

The game was briefly stopped as fans and ushers waved for medics.

On Friday, a female fan in Detroit was injured by a foul ball behind the Tigers dugout.

Earlier this year, a Massachusetts woman was seriously injured after being struck in the head by a broken bat in the stands at Fenway Park. Last month, an Oakland Athletics season ticket-holder asked a federal court in a lawsuit to order Major League Baseball to extend the safety netting at its ballparks the entire length of the foul lines.
