Apparently subbing for Patrick Mahomes provides a potential shot of youthful exuberance.

With the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs already secured by Kansas City (14-1), the Chiefs will rest their MVP candidate Sunday when they play host to the Los Angeles Chargers (6-9).

Mahomes’ backup, Chad Henne, is no stranger to the NFL. That didn’t prevent Chiefs coach Andy Reid, however, from telling his backup quarterback to go be a kid again.

“I think he’s excited,” Reid said. “I told him, ‘Act like you’re 20, man, and try to remember those days and feel it.’ He’s all in.”

Henne, 35, will start for the first time since the first three games of the 2014 season with Jacksonville. He entered as a reserve in two blowouts this season, completing 5 of 6 passes while rushing for one touchdown after missing all of last season with a fractured ankle.

Not quite the numbers Mahomes has posted leading Kansas City to 10 straight wins as the NFL passing leader with 4,740 yards.

The Chiefs have already established a club-best win total and can set another franchise record with an 11th consecutive win in the same season.

Nonetheless, Reid embraced the opportunity to rest several regulars before the Chiefs observe a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

“It’s crazy to think it’s my first (start) since 2014,” Henne said. “I got all my games in when I was young and then I had like a five- or six-year span where I didn’t get much playing time. I’m excited and excited about the group we’re going to have out there.”

The lineup could lack some firepower the Chiefs typically deploy.

Tyreek Hill (hamstring), Le’Veon Bell (knee), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle) and Sammy Watkins (calf) all missed practice Wednesday. Travis Kelce could be another weapon the Chiefs sit since he has already set the NFL season record for receiving yardage (1,416) by a tight end and the franchise record for catches (105).

The Chargers carry a three-game winning streak behind Justin Herbert, who engineered game-winning drives in each of the three wins. The No. 6 overall pick from Oregon owns an NFL rookie record with 28 touchdown passes.

Herbert’s first start came in Week 2 against the Chiefs after a pain-killing injection punctured the lung of Tyrod Taylor. The Chargers, who started 2-7, took the Chiefs into overtime before falling 23-20 as Herbert passed for 311 yards and one touchdown.

“I think I’m a better teammate, son, friend because of all those tough times we had this year,” Herbert said. “I know I learned a lot going forward, I know I’m going to be better prepared for 2021.”

One question is whether he will be joined by fourth-year coach Anthony Lynn, who said he has not been given any indication on his future with Los Angeles.

“I am not concerned about that; I am concerned about Kansas City,” Lynn said.

Defensive end Joey Bosa (concussion), wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) and safety Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle) are questionable for the Chargers.

The Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers are only playing for pride and draft positioning Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., but that doesn’t mean the AFC West rivals don’t have anything to celebrate.

Both can boast of having a pair of Pro Bowl players. Linebacker Bradley Chubb and safety Justin Simmons were named to the squad from Denver, while defensive end Joey Bosa and wide receiver Keenan Allen represent the Chargers.

It’s a small consolation for teams that had hoped to be playing well into January. Instead they look to the future with their young quarterbacks showing the potential to become franchise mainstays.

For the Chargers (5-9), Justin Herbert stepped into the starting role in Week 2 after Tyrod Taylor was injured in the first week of the season. Herbert has been solid in his rookie season, throwing for 3,781 yards and 27 touchdowns and rushing for another four in 13 games.

Herbert has earned the respect of Broncos coach Vic Fangio.

“Very, very impressed with him — big arm, big body, fast, strong in the pocket, hard to get down, has really run their offense with a great command,” Fangio said Wednesday. “I think their offensive coaches have done a good job bringing him along. He’s been very, very impressive.”

Herbert is coming off one of his best games of the season. He passed for 314 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another in an overtime win over the Las Vegas Raiders. It was L.A.’s second successive victory after dropping eight of the previous 10.

Herbert beat the Raiders with Allen, his top receiver, limited with a hamstring injury. Allen didn’t practice Wednesday and could be a game-time decision Sunday.

Herbert’s opposite number, Drew Lock, hasn’t put up the same numbers but Denver (5-9) thinks it has found its quarterback after four seasons of searching. Lock has thrown just 14 TD passes and 2,330 yards in 11 games, but one of his best outings came against the Chargers on Nov. 1.

The Broncos rallied to erase a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, winning it on Lock’s touchdown pass to KJ Hamler as time expired. Two weeks ago, he had a stunning performance against Carolina, when he was 21-for-27, 280 yards and 4 TDs in a 32-27 triumph.

He struggled last week against Buffalo but hopes to bounce back to finish the season strong.

He’ll have to do it against a former teammate who also wants to finish out the year on a high note. Cornerback Chris Harris Jr., a key member of Denver’s defense that led the team to the Super Bowl 50 title, has battled injuries in his first year with the Chargers. In Week 3 he suffered a high ankle sprain, a low ankle sprain, a broken toe and a bruised foot, missing seven games.

He returned Nov. 29. By then L.A.’s playoff hopes were slim but the former All-Pro wanted to play.

“Most guys would have been done for the year,” Harris said this week. “I was motivated to try to do whatever I can to get back and help this team.”

The Broncos will get help with the return of kicker Brandon McManus, who was placed on the COVID-19 /reserve list for close contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus. His one-game replacement, Taylor Russolino, missed a field goal and two extra points.

The Detroit Lions didn’t lose their season opener, but they are in the position where they need to rebound from a highly disappointing result when they host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Detroit squandered an 18-point, fourth-quarter lead in its initial contest before kicking a field goal to salvage a 27-27 tie with Arizona.

Matthew Stafford says the blown lead is now in the past as the club needs to make sure it focuses on the Chargers. “You can’t dwell on it, whether it was a great win and great performance, or a blowout loss and a terrible performance,” Detroit’s quarterback told reporters. “If you do this a long time, you understand that. If you don’t understand that, you probably don’t do this for a long time. It’s part of what is ingrained in us. We move forward.” Los Angeles blew a 15-point, third-quarter advantage in its season opener before eventually posting a 30-24 overtime victory over Indianapolis. Philip Rivers will make his 210th consecutive regular-season start for the Chargers as he trails only Brett Favre (297) and Eli Manning (set for No. 211) on the all-time list among quarterbacks.

ABOUT THE CHARGERS (1-0): No one within the franchise has been concerned about the holdout of running back Melvin Gordon, and that became more evident when Austin Ekeler recorded 154 scrimmage yards (58 rushing, 96 receiving) and scored three touchdowns (including the game-winning 7-yard run in OT) in the opener. “In the past, I still made plays on the field,” Ekeler told reporters after his big performance. “People are acting like I came out of nowhere. I made plays, but it was more limited because Melvin was here.” Defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram both had sacks in the opener while veteran linebacker Thomas Davis racked up a team-best 14 sacks in his club debut.

The Los Angeles Chargers have already clinched a spot in the postseason but they have loftier goals in mind — namely, the chance to secure the top overall seed and earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Chargers still have to overtake division rival Kansas City but cannot afford a misstep against the visiting Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night.

Los Angeles punched its ticket to the playoffs in dramatic fashion, erasing a two-touchdown deficit in the final four minutes for a 29-28 road win over the Chiefs. Quarterback Philip Rivers, one of an NFL-high seven Pro Bowl selections for the Chargers, said his team faces a “heck of a challenge” against the top-ranked defense of the Ravens, who hold the tiebreaker over two other teams for the second wild card in the AFC. Baltimore has won four of five since rookie Lamar Jackson took over as the starting quarterback — the only loss coming in overtime at Kansas City — but the Ravens know what they are up against in Rivers and Co. “Philip is probably one of the smartest, if not — he’s right in the category with the top two or three guys (in terms of) dissecting the defense, playing the chess game,” Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said of Rivers. “He really finds the weakness and he’s not afraid to take chances.”

ABOUT THE RAVENS (8-6): Jackson has yet to throw for more than 178 yards in either of his five starts but he has double-digit rushes in each one to help Baltimore become the first team since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976 to rush for at least 190 yards in five consecutive games. Rookie Gus Jackson had 15 carries on the season until Jackson moved into the starting lineup but has led the punishing ground game with three 100-yard performances during the 4-1 run. Willie Snead has emerged as Jackson’s favorite target with five catches in three of the past five contests, but the defense will be in the spotlight Sunday. The Ravens lead the league in fewest points (18.1) and fewest overall yards (290.2) and are third against the pass (202.6).

ABOUT THE CHARGERS (11-3): Los Angeles made it four straight wins and 10 of 11 despite an injury to top receiver Keenan Allen and the absence of top running backs Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler. Gordon, expected to return to the lineup after sitting out the past three games due to a sprained MCL, has rushed for 802 yards and nine touchdowns while snagging 44 receptions for four more scores. Allen is looming as a game-time decision, but 2017 first-round pick Mike Williams scored three touchdowns on a season-high seven receptions against Kansas City to earn AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. While Rivers is having an MVP season with 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions, the ninth-ranked run defense (103.7) yards will have to contain Jackson.

ABOUT THE TITANS (3-3): Tennessee is looking to bounce back from an abysmal offensive performance in last Sunday’s 21-0 loss to Baltimore as the team registered just 106 total yards and seven first downs while allowing Mariota to be sacked 11 times. “This is a humbling league, and we’ve been humbled the last few weeks,” Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur told reporters. “Every game is different, and unfortunately, last week we got outcoached and we got outplayed, and that starts with me. It’s a pretty humbling experience.” Tennessee ranks 30th in scoring offense (14.5 points per game), but the defense is third in average points allowed (17.8) and will get a boost from the return of linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who missed most of the last three games with a shoulder injury.

ABOUT THE CHARGERS (3-2): Rivers is off to a strong start with 1,495 yards and 13 touchdown passes against two interceptions, and was a stellar 22-of-27 for 339 yards and two scores in last week’s 26-10 win over Oakland. Running back Melvin Gordon has scored six touchdowns (three rushing, three receiving) and ranks fourth in the NFL with 595 yards from scrimmage (334 rushing, 261 receiving). Defensive end Melvin Ingram recorded one sack and his first career interception in the win over the Raiders, and the defense is allowing an average of 26 points while playing without star defensive end Joey Bosa (foot).

ABOUT THE BROWNS (2-2-1): Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has energized the offense as the franchise is coming off a season-high 342-yard performance against the Ravens. “I have known that the Browns were not bad since the second I stepped foot into this franchise,” Mayfield told reporters. “We had a special team from the get-go. Whoever we are playing has nothing to do with this team. We believe in this team that we have. Management has put together a great group of guys.” Cleveland leads the NFL with 15 takeaways and has some impressive young pieces on defense in pass rusher Myles Garrett (five sacks) and cornerback Denzel Ward (league high-tying three interceptions).
