Perhaps the Los Angeles Rams were looking ahead.

How else to explain last weekend’s embarrassing 23-20 loss at home to the previously winless New York Jets — when the Rams had a chance to clinch a playoff berth?

“The only thing that makes you feel better is when you say, ‘All right, let’s learn from it, let’s own it, and let’s move forward accordingly,'” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “Because dwelling on it or getting still (ticked) off about it really doesn’t do you any good for how you move forward.”

The Rams (9-5) need to move forward quickly, with a game Sunday at NFC West-leading Seattle (10-4) that could decide the division title.

“As poor as (Sunday) was, we’ve got an opportunity to respond in a division game at their place with a lot at stake,” McVay said. “I do trust the character of this football team. I trust the resilience.”

Los Angeles won the first meeting against Seattle 23-16 on Nov. 15 as Jared Goff threw for 302 yards and Malcolm Brown rushed for a pair of touchdowns. That means the Rams would own the first tiebreaker against the Seahawks should they win Sunday to sweep the season series and go into the final week with matching 10-5 records.

“We have two division opponents coming up. We missed a chance to clinch, now it’s even more important to win the next two games,” said Rams safety John Johnson, whose team will close the regular season at Arizona. “Certain teams have that knack for winning. We’re still learning that.”

The Seahawks clinched their ninth playoff berth in coach Pete Carroll’s 11 seasons with a 20-15 victory last weekend at Washington. Carlos Hyde scored on a 50-yard run and Seattle’s defense turned away a fourth-quarter rally.

“(That) was a really big weekend for us,” Carroll said. “Real happy with the game that we put together, the way that the whole approach of it worked out well. We got the win that we were looking for and we got a little bit of help too, the Jets, getting their game. All of that adds together and sets up a really big opportunity this weekend coming up.”

The Seahawks aren’t just satisfied with a playoff berth. They haven’t won an NFC West title since 2016 and haven’t hosted a playoff game since January 2017.

“It’s pretty cool to clinch it, but we’ve got a big game coming up (this) week, man, and I’ll tell you what, I’m looking forward to that,” said Seattle safety Jamal Adams, who has 9 1/2 sacks this season, adding to his single-season record for a defensive back since the NFL began tracking the stat in 1982.

The Rams will be without leading rusher Cam Akers, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss to New York. Akers rushed for 63 yards Sunday and had 50 more yards and a touchdown wiped out by penalties.

Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen (foot) was a full participant in practice this week and will likely come off the injured reserve list. Starting right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle) and cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) were limited in practice but could return after missing multiple games. Carroll announced cornerback Quinton Dunbar (knee) will need surgery and will remain on the IR, ending his season.

With their seasons on the line, a pair of NFC West rivals will meet on Sunday in what amounts to an early playoff game as the Arizona Cardinals face the Los Angeles Rams at Inglewood, Calif.

The short-handed Rams (9-6) need a victory or a Chicago Bears (8-7) loss to the Green Bay Packers to make the actual playoff field, but they maintain they will play Sunday’s game as if a loss means elimination. The Cardinals (8-7) are in a true win-or-go-home scenario.

The Rams will be without quarterback Jared Goff, who sustained a thumb injury last Sunday at Seattle and underwent surgery. John Wolford, who has not taken a snap in a regular-season game, is scheduled to start for a team that has lost consecutive games.

Also expected to be out is wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who tested positive for COVID-19, according to NFL Network. The Rams have not confirmed a positive test for their top receiver, who leads the team with 92 receptions and 974 yards.

The offense has other issues as running back Darrell Henderson (high ankle sprain) is out while running back Malcolm Brown (shoulder) has been limited at practice. Rookie running back Cam Akers (ankle) will try to get back on the field after not playing against the Seahawks.

“I believe in this team,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “I trust in their mental toughness and I think that the overarching message is let’s put everything that we have into this. Let’s not be afraid to put it all out there one more time. Get back up off the mat and keep swinging and have no regrets no matter how this thing ends up.”

The Rams are in their near do-or-die situation after failing to clinch a playoff berth in a Week 15 loss to the previously winless New York Jets before also losing at Seattle in Week 16.

The Cardinals were dealt a blow last week when they were completely taken out of their game in a 20-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The defeat came after consecutive victories over the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cardinals, who are trying to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2015, will have quarterback Kyler Murray at the helm even though he sustained a right leg injury on his final pass attempt Sunday.

“Yeah, I’ll be playing,” Murray said. “There’s no holding back. If we lose, I’ll be home chillin’. It’s my leg. I’m fine.

“It’s an opportunity that only we could ask for. It’s an opportunity to play in the playoffs, get in and we’re right where we want to be with everything that has happened this year.”

The Cardinals do have questions at running back with Chase Edmonds nursing a hip injury that has his status in doubt. Murray was a full participant in practice Wednesday, but Edmonds did not participate.

Also not participating for the Cardinals on Wednesday were wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins (hip) and Larry Fitzgerald (groin). Members of the defense missing at practice Wednesday were linebacker Haason Reddick (hip) and safety Chris Banjo (hip).

The Rams took linebacker Micah Kiser (knee) off injured reserve, but he still is not expected to play Sunday.

Nearly nine months after they were done in by one of the more controversial no-calls in NFL history to help the Rams advance to the Super Bowl, the New Orleans Saints seek a measure of revenge when they visit Los Angeles on Sunday. The Rams defeated the Saints 26-23 in overtime in last year’s NFC Championship Game, but it was blatant pass interference on cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman late in regulation that was missed by referees and is still being discussed.

“I didn’t expect it to get that much pub, but it is what it is,” Robey-Coleman told reporters of the play which forced New Orleans to settle for a field goal and later caused the league to change the rule such that pass interference could be reviewed. “They made it into what it is and the league made it a rule. Just got to live with it now and it’s a rule that the whole league is going to have to adjust to.” The top two teams in the NFC last year are on that path again after both picked up narrow victories last week to open the 2019 season. Drew Brees threw for a pair of touchdowns and picked up 36 of his 370 passing yards on a brilliant last-gasp drive that led to the Saints’ game-winning field goal in a 30-28 triumph over Houston at home Monday night. Los Angeles raced to a 13-0 lead in Carolina before hanging on for a 30-27 victory.

ABOUT THE SAINTS (1-0): Brees stressed the company line about treating this as just another game, but he admitted the sting of the NFC title game loss will never go away. “Still haven’t, never will,” Brees told reporters when asked how long it took to forget the blown call and OT loss. “But, when you say forgotten about you have to find a way to compartmentalize it to the point where you can move on in a positive way. I found a way to do that, but as far as just the events, you live and learn and sometimes things don’t go your way and you’ve got to find a way to come out better on the other side.” Star running back Alvin Kamara ran for 97 yards and had 72 receiving yards in Week 1, while Michael Thomas was Brees’ top target with 10 catches for 123 yards.

ABOUT THE RAMS (1-0): Todd Gurley was hampered by a knee issue at the end of last season and managed only four carries in the NFC title game, but he looked pretty good in Week 1 while mostly sharing the touches out of the backfield with Malcolm Brown. Gurley finished with 97 yards on 14 carries while Brown added 53 yards and scored twice, and both will be taking aim at a New Orleans defense that allowed Houston to pile up 180 rushing yards on only 23 carries. Quarterback Jared Goff followed up his difficult Super Bowl performance with an uneven opener, completing 23-of-39 passes for 186 yards with a TD and an interception against Carolina.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Rams S Eric Weddle (concussion, laceration) is expected to play Sunday.

The Los Angeles Rams begin their quest for a third consecutive NFC West title – and a second straight trip to the Super Bowl – when they open on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Panthers hope to get back to the playoffs for the fifth time in seven seasons after missing out last year.

It’s a matchup of two of the NFL’s top rushing attacks as star running back Todd Gurley helped the Rams rank third in the league in rushing a year ago, while quarterback Cam Newton and versatile back Christian McCaffrey gave the Panthers the No. 4 ground game. Gurley should be fresh – like most of the Rams’ starters – as he didn’t play a snap in the preseason and will be seeing his first live game action Sunday. Goff is 246 yards shy of reaching 4,000 for the first time and needs one touchdown pass to match last season’s total of 28 for Los Angeles, which is tied for second in the league with an average of 34.9 points. Wideouts Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks are Goff’s top two targets with 64 and 63 receptions, respectively. The Rams rank in the middle of the pack defensively, but reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Donald is having another monster season with a league-best 16.5 sacks.

ABOUT THE BEARS (8-4): Backup Chase Daniel was intercepted twice and sacked five times in last weekend’s 30-27 loss at the New York Giants, but Trubisky is much more mobile and was not sacked more than twice in his last seven games. Trubisky, who has thrown for more than 300 yards four times but also has failed to surpass 200 in the same number of games, has rushed for at least 43 yards in five of his last seven contests. Jordan Howard heads an inconsistent running game while backfield mate Tarik Cohen leads Chicago in both catches (59) and receiving yards (659). Mack had 9.0 sacks for a defense that faltered against the Giants but ranks second against the run (85.8) and tops the league in interceptions (21) and touchdowns (5).

Brandin Cooks has bounced back from a quiet three-game stretch with three consecutive 100-yard games, hauling in 24 receptions in that span. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh returns to the city where he began his career but Aaron Donald is a bigger threat with an NFL-high 14.5 sacks.

ABOUT THE LIONS (4-7): After years of having one of the league’s worst rushing attacks, Detroit finally had established a solid ground game before rookie Kerryon Johnson suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for a second straight game. LeGarrette Blount was brought out of mothballs to fill in for Johnson on Thanksgiving and responded by rushing for a season-high 88 yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Stafford has only three touchdown passes versus four interceptions over the past four games and is working with a depleted receiving corps led by Kenny Golladay. Nose tackle Damon Harrison has solidified a run defense that has yielded 148 yards in the last three games.

Todd Gurley hasn’t been shy about gouging the 49ers — and the rest of the league, for that matter — as he collected three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) in last year’s series and is coming off a career-high 208 yards and two scores in Sunday’s 23-20 win over Denver to earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. “He’s been running wild ever since I got to this team,” Rams wideout Robert Woods said. “It’s just a credit to this line, this game plan, and his work ethic. And he’s a beast. … He’s pretty much unstoppable right now.” San Francisco went to great lengths to stop itself en route to losing its fourth straight game on Monday. C.J. Beathard, who has stepped in for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, showed flashes of promise but a late interception led to his undoing in a 33-30 setback versus Green Bay.

ABOUT THE RAMS (6-0): Gurley’s 208 rushing yards trumped the passing total of quarterback Jared Goff (201), who was hindered by the loss of one of his prized targets. Cooper Kupp is expected to be sidelined several weeks with a sprained knee, although fellow wideouts Brandin Cooks and Woods are more than capable of carrying the load. Cooks has 23 receptions, 418 yards and a touchdown in a four-game stretch while Woods has 406 yards and three scores in that span. On the other side of the ball, Aaron Donald has four sacks in his last three games and fellow defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has three in his last four.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (1-5): With running back Jerick McKinnon and Garoppolo sidelined by season-ending injuries, the 49ers received a jolt with the return of Marquise Goodwin to the lineup on Monday. He can take the tops off of coverages, so it definitely helps having him out there.” Running back Matt Breida stands to benefit from that as he bids for his third straight game with a touchdown and fourth in a row at home.

The Los Angeles Rams look to maintain their unbeaten record when they visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Los Angeles has been soaring behind a unit that leads the NFL in total offense (468.4 yards per game) and ranks third in scoring (34.6 points) as it faces a Denver squad that has lost three straight games.

The disappointing Broncos are struggling on defense – allowing 26.2 points and 395.8 yards per contest – and star linebacker Von Miller (four sacks) is pointing the finger at himself as a main cause of the unit’s issues. “I’ve got to get sacks,” Miller told reporters. “That’s what I do.
