Alabama leads the Southeastern Conference and leaped into the AP Top 25 on Monday.

The 18th-ranked Crimson Tide (11-3, 6-0 SEC) will try to stay unbeaten in conference play when they face second-place LSU (10-2, 5-1) on Tuesday night in Baton Rouge, La.

Alabama, which is off to its best start in SEC play since 1987, won its seventh consecutive game when it routed visiting Arkansas 90-59 on Saturday. The victory came four days after an 85-65 victory against Kentucky.

“We talked about what type of character we would have after the big win at Kentucky,” coach Nate Oats said. “We knew Arkansas was going to bring everything they had. Our guys responded great.”

The 31-point margin of victory was the Crimson Tide’s largest in SEC play since defeating host Mississippi State 75-43 eight years ago.

John Petty Jr. led the team with 17 points and he became the school’s all-time leader in 3-pointers when he made his 264th.

“I am really happy for Petty,” Oats said. “He could’ve left after his junior year. He decided to come back. You like for guys who decide to come back for their senior year to do great things.”

Jaden Shackelford added 16 points and Herbert Jones, who was questionable because of a finger injury suffered against Kentucky, scored 13 points in 23 minutes.

The Tide led for nearly 39 minutes of the game, racing to a 42-19 halftime advantage and leading by as many as 36 points.

“Our attention to detail on defense was great,” Oats said.

LSU’s defense was important in its fourth-straight victory — an 85-80 home win against South Carolina on Saturday.

“We know we can score the ball,” said Javonte Smart, who had 15 points as one of four Tigers in double figures. “We talk about defense. They were getting some buckets; some back-door looks. We just wanted to lock in when we were down. We just wanted to get back in that lead, and cut it and tie the game, and on to play defense.”

The Tigers trailed 72-64, but they held the Gamecocks without a field goal for more than seven minutes to take control. South Carolina missed 11 consecutive shots and made just one of its last 13.

“Good team effort,” LSU coach Will Wade said. “Just happy to win. It’s tough to win in the SEC…Our guys really dug in.”

Cam Thomas scored 25 points, Trendon Watford added 23 and Darius Days scored 11.

“Trendon did a great job all night,” Wade said. “They were collapsing on him. He did a good job finishing. He did a great job at the free-throw line (nine of 10). He was really, really good.

“You have to play through your hot hand. Then, Cam was able to make plays down the stretch off the ball screens with Trendon also. We were able to play through Trendon in the post. That’s where the mismatches were. That’s where we were able to make things happen.”

PREDICTION: FLORIDA , LSU

Oddsmakers currently have the FLORIDA listed as 2.5 point favorites versus the LSU, while the game’s total is sitting at 44.5.

LSU is clicking on both sides of the ball but faces a tough task Saturday when it visits Florida in SEC action. The sixth-ranked Tigers are 5-0, but the Gators have won three straight including a pair of road wins to open conference play.

LSU has been held below 31 points only once and has not given up more than 21 points in any outing as the team is off to its best start in three years. The Tigers set a season high for points scored in last week’s 45-16 triumph against Ole Miss. Joe Burrow threw three touchdowns – equaling his total entering the game – and also ran for a score, giving Florida a glimpse of what it must contain this weekend. The Gators should be up for the task after suffocating Mississippi State in last week’s 13-6 win.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: LSU -2.5

ABOUT LSU (5-0, 2-0 SEC): The Tigers’ offense has featured a nice balance as Burrow has thrown 131 passes without an interception and Nick Brossette has run for six touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry. “It’s just a matter of getting it down and communicating with each other and getting comfortable with it,” Brossette said of the team’s offensive balance. “We’re improving each and every week.” Burrow added a season-high 96 yards on the ground against Ole Miss and scored his second rushing TD of the campaign.

ABOUT FLORIDA (4-1, 2-1): The Gators rank ninth nationally in points allowed (14.0) and have given up more than 10 points only twice this season. “This is going to be the best defense we faced so far this year,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “They’re very aggressive. He won’t give you the same look many times. Their movement is very precise.” Feleipe Franks had thrown multiple TD passes in each of the first four games before failing to throw a touchdown – or any completion over 20 yards, for that matter – in the ugly win against Mississippi State.

EXTRA POINTS

1. After hovering around 50 percent completions in each of his previous three games, Franks completed a season-high 71 percent of his attempts last week.

2. LSU has won its last two trips to Gainesville by a combined four points.

3. Tigers K Cole Tracy leads all active FBS kickers in career field goals (78).

PREDICTION: LSU 22, Florida 13

PREDICTION: AUBURN , LSU

Oddsmakers currently have the AUBURN listed as -9.5 point favorites versus the LSU, while the game’s total is sitting at 44.5.

After high-profile season-opening wins followed by lopsided tune-ups, seventh-ranked host Auburn and No. 13 LSU square off Saturday in the SEC opener for both teams. Auburn is aiming for its 14th consecutive home victory dating to 2016.

Both teams opened the season with impressive triumphs over ranked opponents, as Auburn beat Washington 21-16 in Atlanta in a matchup of top-10 teams while LSU posted a 33-17 neutral-site win over Miami. Now the stakes are raised for two teams hoping to challenge top-ranked Alabama for the SEC West crown. “This game is always a factor in the SEC West,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “I would not be surprised if it’s another one.” Auburn has won 13 consecutive home games dating to 2016, and the home team has won 16 of the last 18 meetings in the series.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Auburn -10

ABOUT LSU (2-0): The Tigers’ offense has been impressive and relatively balanced thus far, as Nick Brossette is averaging 131 rushing yards per game and quarterback Joe Burrow has been steady, passing for 145.5 yards per contest with two touchdowns and no interceptions. LSU’s defense has been even more dominant, though, forcing five turnovers while registering 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks in its two games. The Tigers gave up only 254 total yards in last week’s 31-0 rout of Southeastern Louisiana.

ABOUT AUBURN (2-0): The Tigers have rolled up nearly 1,000 yards of total offense through two games, and it has come from numerous sources. JaTarvious Whitlow (150 yards, touchdown), Shaun Shivers (124, one), and Kam Martin (120, one) all have been effective while running the ball, and Jarrett Stidham has passed for 386 yards and two touchdowns while utilizing 11 different receivers. Auburn’s defense has been wreaking havoc in the backfield, averaging 4.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss after limiting Alabama State to 205 total yards in last week’s 63-9 victory.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Auburn has allowed only three first-quarter touchdowns in its last 21 games.

2. LSU is one of six teams in the nation that has not yet committed a turnover, as it has played 15 quarters without a giveaway dating to last season.

No title, but plenty of other matters will be on the line when No. 22 Texas A&M hosts No. 25 LSU to top off Thanksgiving night – including the status of the two coaches.

Kickoff at Kyle Field in College Station is 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday with ESPN handling the telecast.

The visiting Tigers (6-4, 4-3 SEC) will be playing to enhance the chances of interim coach Ed Orgeron earning permanent status with the program. LSU’s regular season was cut short by a game because of the cancellation of a non-conference contest with South Alabama to accommodate a rescheduled meeting with Florida.

Though always considered a long-shot to be named full-time, Orgeron’s chances began to improve when the team responded well after he took over for Les Miles, who was fired after a 2-2 start. The Tigers rolled to three easy victories, were in a scoreless tie with No. 1 Alabama after three quarters and lost just 10-0, then bounced back a week later to rout Arkansas 38-10.

But the mistake-laden 16-10 loss to a Florida team that was missing six injured starters derailed whatever momentum Orgeron had gained in his quest to keep the job.

“It’s been fantastic,” said Orgeron, a native of Larose, La., who is 4-2 in his interim stint. “What a ride. The head coach at LSU being from Louisiana, the way the people have reacted, the way the players reacted. We’ve played very well in most games. It’s been fun. It’s been fun around to be the staff and fun to see our players grow.

“It’s just been an exciting challenge. I’ve grown as a head coach like I try to grow every day.”

A decision on the new coach likely will come in a matter of days after this game.

A&M coach Kevin Sumlin’s job may not be in immediate jeopardy, but a loss to the Tigers could start up the grumbling.

The Aggies (8-3, 4-3 SEC) are seeking a ninth win that would give them a shot at 10 victories with a bowl win. They haven’t been in double digits in wins since going 11-2 in Sumlin’s first season in 2012, which also is the last year they finished over .500 in SEC play.

If the Aggies lose, however, it would be a sixth straight loss to the Tigers, who have won all four meetings since the Aggies joined the SEC, and continue what has been a November slump for Sumlin’s teams. The Aggies are 11-8 for the month under Sumlin overall but only 7-8 over the last four seasons.

Although the Aggies have consistently stumbled on the brink of competing for the SEC West title, Sumlin’s argument is that they have at least made themselves relevant in the discussion.

Texas A&M went 26-25 in its last four seasons in the Big 12. Since joining the SEC, the Aggies are 44-19 under Sumlin.

“For us to be where we want to be, we do need to take that next step and play for championships and be involved in that conversation consistently,” Sumlin said. “Where we are right now is a team that has made some strides since coming into this league.”

Both LSU and A&M have injury issues.

Linebacker Kendall Beckwith, the Tigers’ leading tackler with 91 stops, is out with a knee injury, and running back Leonard Fournette is still hobbled by an ankle problem.

Derrius Guice, who is the team’s leading rusher with 964 yard but had a couple of key mistakes late against Florida — fumbling inside the Gators’ 10-yard line in the second quarter and running the wrong way on the final play of the game at Florida’s 1-yard line, would replace Fournette. Donnie Alexander (36 tackles and an interception) likely will start for Beckwith.

For the Aggies. junior Jake Hubenak, who took over for the injured Trevor Knight, injured his shoulder in the loss to Ole Miss but quarterbacked the win over Texas-San Antonio.

“He’s day-to-day working hard every day to get his shoulder back in its usual shape,” offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said. “I was very impressed with how he gritted it out on Saturday.”

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) The student in an on-campus apartment break-in involving LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings and two teammates has asked prosecutors not to press charges, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore said Wednesday.

Jennings, LSU safety Dwayne Thomas and defensive lineman Maqeudius Bain were arrested by LSU police in June and booked with unauthorized entry of inhabited dwelling. The players have said they sought to retrieve items that had been stolen from Jennings. Thomas also was booked with simple burglary.

The players have been suspended indefinitely, but coach Les Miles has expressed optimism they’ll be reinstated when the case is resolved.

The student’s current preference to drop the case caries weight, but Moore said he still wants to review transcripts of what the student initially told police.

”Whether (the players) broke into the apartment or not is the question. Whether they were invited in is the question,” Moore said. ”I want to know what (the student) said initially. What he’s saying now is that he never told them they weren’t invited in the room.”

The prosecutor added that the case could be resolved within a week.

”I want to be able to explain it properly, to say, `This is what I found out,’ and put it to rest,” Moore added.

Jennings started 12 of LSU’s 13 games last season, completing 49 percent of his passes for 1,611 yards and 11 scores against just seven interceptions.

Thomas played in five games last season before his season was cut short by a knee injury. He was in on 27 tackles and recovered a fumble. This season, he is expected to be a regular in the defensive backfield.

Bain, a reserve last season, appeared in 10 games and was credited with six tackles and a pass break up.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Bo Wallace was on the cusp of prolonging No. 3 Mississippi’s bid for an unbeaten season until LSU safety Ronald Martin got in the way.

Wallace’s pass was intercepted by Martin at the 1 with 2 seconds left, and the Rebels fell 10-7 to the 24th-ranked Tigers on Saturday night.

Ole Miss was lining up for a potential tying field goal from 42 yards, but was called for delay of game. So the Rebels decided to run a play instead and Wallace threw his first interception in a Southeastern Conference game this season.

Soon after, fans were streaming onto the Tiger Stadium field.

Leonard Fournette ran for 113 yards, and LSU (7-2, 3-2) finished with 264 yards rushing against defense that came in allowing 97.1 per game. Anthony Jennings’ short touchdown pass to tight end Logan Stokes gave LSU the lead late in the fourth quarter.

Mississippi (7-1, 4-1) led most of the way, but mainly because LSU turned the ball over four times and missed a short field goal. The Rebels can still win the SEC West by winning out, though that would require beating No. 5 Auburn and No. 1 Mississippi State.

“We’ve been on the good side of these for seven in a row now. This league is brutal,” Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze said. “Give LSU a ton of credit. …. That’s the best offensive line we’ve played and the running backs are very, very good. And, defensively, they’re coming into their own.”

Playing less than 24 hours after coach Les Miles’ 91-year-old mother died, the Tigers played with enough passion and confidence on both sides of the ball to overcome their mistakes and put a dent in the Rebels’ national title hopes.

The Tigers’ defense, buoyed by the deafening roars of the Death Valley record-tying crowd of 102,321, largely stifled Wallace and the Rebels’ offense that was averaging 35.4 points.

Wallace was 14 of 33 for 176 yards and one touchdown — a 15-yarder to Cody Core late in the first quarter. Wallace, who was sacked twice, still scrambled for 40 net yards, and led Ole Miss in rushing. LSU linebacker Kwon Alexander was credited with eight totals tackles — 2½ for losses — and fellow linebacker Kendell Beckwith led the Tigers with 10 tackles.

Jennings only threw the ball 16 times and was intercepted twice. He completed only eight passes for 142 yards, but came through for the winning score on a roll out after a play-action fake on second-and-goal.

Mississippi had two more possessions to come back, but the first one ended with a fourth-and-1 stop in which Beckwith and Jermauria Rasco held Wallace to no gain. Because the Rebels had all three timeouts left, they got the ball back again on their own 25 with 1:19 left.

Wallace extended the drive with a fourth-down completion. Later, an LSU pass interference penalty wiped out what would have been a game-sealing interception, setting up the frantic finish.

It was apparent the Tigers were emotionally pumped up for the game — maybe too much so, judging by three big first-quarter mistakes which arguably resulted in a 17-point swing in the Rebels’ favor.

Kicker Colby Delahoussaye, who’d been perfect on field goals all season, missed a 28-yarder. Later, Fournette fumbled on first-and-goal from the 3. Then came cornerback Jalen Collins’ drop of an easy interception of a floating, underthrown halfback pass by Jordan Wilkins on a trick play Ole Miss tried on second-and-goal from the 10.

Collins’ drop allowed Ole Miss to cap that drive with the game’s opening points on Wallace’s 15-yard pass to Cody Core.

LSU was not deflated, however. The Tigers quickly rode their punishing running game across mid-field until Magee was punished for a second-effort run, breaking tackles and churning his legs relentlessly until safety Cody Prewitt stripped him and defensive end C.J. Johnson recovered.

By the time the first half ended, LSU had rushed for 147 yards. But the Tigers trailed 7-3 at halftime because the Rebels forced a field goal after LSU drove inside the Ole Miss 15 for the third time.
