Brewers bring up RHP Barnes a day after 15-inning loss

CHICAGO (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled right-hander Jacob Barnes from Triple-A San Antonio and optioned reliever Burch Smith to their top farm club.

The addition of Barnes gives Milwaukee a fresh arm in the bullpen a day after its 15-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs. Smith pitched the final 3 1/3 innings Saturday, surrendering Willson Contreras’ game-ending homer.

Barnes also began the year with the Brewers, going 1-1 with a 7.30 ERA in 13 appearances before he was sent down on May 2.

The Brewers announced the moves before Sunday night’s series finale against the Cubs.

Brewer ace Jimmy Nelson out for season with shoulder injury

CHICAGO (AP) Milwaukee Brewers ace Jimmy Nelson will miss the rest of the season after jamming his shoulder while diving to a base a night earlier.

General manager David Stearns said before Saturday’s game with the Chicago Cubs that he does not know if surgery is needed. Nelson has a strained right rotator cuff strain and partial anterior labrum tear.

Nelson left Friday night’s 2-0 victory over the Cubs after the injury. The right-hander threw four-hit ball over five innings, while striking out seven and walking two en route to winning his third straight start. He is 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA, a career high for victories.

Nelson singled off the left-field wall in the fifth inning and was hurt diving back to first after rounding the base. Initially, Nelson and manager Craig Counsell did not think the injury serious.

Nelson said he felt discomfort pitching the bottom of the inning- and his velocity was down – though he got out of a first-and-third jam. Josh Hader came on to start the sixth for Milwaukee.

Milwaukee entered Saturday four games behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central.

Brewers’ Nelson leaves start against Cubs with sore arm

CHICAGO (AP) Milwaukee Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson left Friday night’s 2-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs after jamming his right shoulder.

Nelson singled off the left-field wall in the fifth inning and hurt his shoulder diving back to first after rounding the base. He is scheduled for tests on Saturday, though the Brewers don’t think the injury is serious.

Nelson threw four-hit ball over five innings. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out seven and walked two while winning his third straight start.

Nelson felt discomfort pitching the fifth, though he got out of a first-and-third jam when he retired Anthony Rizzo on a fly to deep center. Josh Hader came on to start the sixth for Milwaukee.
