NEW YORK (AP) Call it a true Hollywood story for first-round pick Pete Crow-Armstrong. And no act at all, in fact.

The son of two thespians is way beyond a little big league now.

Crow-Armstrong and the New York Mets agreed Thursday to a minor league contract with a $3,359,000 signing bonus, the slot value for the 19th overall selection in the amateur draft.

“He was a guy that we had targeted for months and months,” Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said June 10 after the team drafted Crow-Armstrong. “He’s been a big fish in a big pond for a long time, and I think his personality and his confidence will play very well in New York City.”

The Mets snagged the 18-year-old center fielder out of Harvard-Westlake High School in the Los Angeles area – where both of Crow-Armstrong’s parents are accomplished screen actors.

His mother, Ashley Crow, has a long list of film and television credits that includes appearances in “Minority Report” and “Heroes.” She even played a significant role in a well-known baseball movie, portraying young Billy Heywood’s mom in the 1994 film “Little Big League.”

“I love the movie, and I think I’d love it if my mom wasn’t in it. But she was obviously also great in it,” Crow-Armstrong said on the night he was drafted.

His father, Matthew John Armstrong, was in dozens of TV shows such as “American Dreams,” “The Young and the Restless” and “American Horror Story.”

Crow-Armstrong hit .514 in 10 games with one strikeout in 42 at-bats before his senior season was stopped due to the coronavirus. He batted .426 with three homers and five triples during his junior season.

According to scouts and evaluators, he possesses elite defensive skills in the center with Gold Glove potential – and a top-of-the-order profile as a hitter.

“All spring, I called him the left-handed magician in center field,” Mets vice president of international and amateur scouting Tommy Tanous said on draft night.

“Terrific reads, terrific hands, and a fearless center fielder. He was actually probably the easiest center fielder I’ve had a chance to scout.”

He passed up his commitment to Vanderbilt, a college baseball powerhouse, to sign with New York.

“That’s a big leaguer right there. We can pick ‘em out. That’s a big leaguer,” Tanous said.

Harvard-Westlake has produced a string of the first-round draft picks recently, including current major league pitchers Jack Flaherty (Cardinals), Max Fried (Braves) and Lucas Giolito (White Sox).

And now a center fielder in Crow-Armstrong.

“I love to display kind of the intangibles, as well as what I can bring physically,” he said after being drafted. “I want to get the fans engaged and excited, so I definitely bring a lot of energy. I’m a big talker. I love to communicate.”

“I want to interact with fans. I want to be more than just a baseball player. I want to make an impact,” he added.

The Mets also announced they agreed to a deal with outfielder Isaiah Greene, a second-round compensatory selection from Corona Senior High School in California. The speedy Greene, 18, was the 69th overall pick, which New York received as compensation for losing free-agent pitcher Zack Wheeler to Philadelphia last December.

Greene got an $850,000 signing bonus, below his slot value of $929,800.

New York is still trying to sign second-round pick JT Ginn, a right-hander from Mississippi State chosen with the 52nd overall selection.

Ginn, drafted 30th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018, had Tommy John surgery in March.

NEW YORK (AP) The Yankees and Mets would train in New York if Major League Baseball and its players try to start the coronavirus-delayed season.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Saturday, and the teams confirmed the decisions. The Democrat said he would like to stop by to see them training.

“I think New York now is especially attractive, compared to the other states, because we have such a low transmission rate, and this is a state that is ready, willing and able to partner with sports teams so that they can play,” Cuomo said.

The Yankees originally had intended to base at their spring training complex in Tampa, Florida, instead of Yankee Stadium. The Mets had said they were undecided between Citi Field and their training camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Florida at first appeared preferable because the complexes have more fields.

But positive cases for COVID-19 in Florida have increased markedly in recent days, while the percentage of positive tests in New York City has dropped sharply. New York City is set to enter phase two of reopening on Monday, allowing stores and outdoor restaurant seating to reopen with social distancing.

All 30 MLB teams have closed their spring camps in Florida and Arizona this weekend over virus concerns.

MLB had hoped to start the season during the first week of July, but teams and the players’ association are engaged in a bitter fight over how to apportion revenue losses caused by the pandemic.

Both sides agree that players need three weeks of training before the increasingly slight season could start.

”To have spring training in New York, that is a really great development,” Cuomo said. ”It’s where I think they should always be, obviously. But in a bleak time, and in a season that obviously has had significant hurdles to deal with, to have a spring training quick camp in New York, that is the first bit of really good news when it comes to baseball that we’ve had in a long time.”

Cuomo has said both teams can play games at home but without fans. The U.S. Open tennis tournament is scheduled to take place without fans in its usual time frame that starts in late August.

Speaking on Monday at the general managers meeting, Alderson says: ”He hasn’t had a hearing yet and so the facts are to be determined” and called it ”not just an unfortunate situation but a sad one for him and his family.”

The 27-year-old Familia led the majors with a franchise-record 51 saves this year and has 94 over the past two seasons for the Mets.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (3-0, 3.50 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (0-3, 4.35)

Matt Harvey will be the starting pitcher for the Mets on this day. Right hander Harvey is 3-0 this season with a 3.50 ERA.

Harvey’s opponent in this one will be CC Sabathia. The Yankees left hander has a 4.35 ERA to go along with a 0-3 record this season.

Oddsmakers currently have the Mets listed as 120-moneyline favorites versus the Yankees, while the game’s total is sitting at 7.

The New York Yankees finally cooled off the red-hot New York Mets and will go for their fifth consecutive victory in the middle game of the Subway Series on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees improved to 7-1 in their last eight games with a 6-1 rout in Friday’s series opener, snapping the Mets’ franchise record-tying winning streak at 11 games.

CC Sabathia will oppose unbeaten Mets ace Matt Harvey in a high-profile matchup of two pitchers returning from major injuries but headed in opposite directions. Harvey missed last season following Tommy John surgery while Sabathia was limited to eight starts before undergoing knee surgery. Mark Teixeira belted a pair of homers and Jacoby Ellsbury added a solo shot as the Yankees scored at least five runs for the ninth time in 12 games. The Mets, who own the best record in baseball at 13-4 and amassed 57 runs in their winning streak, were held to their lowest run total since a 2-1 defeat at Washington in the second game of the season.

Last time out for New York, they were a 6-1 loser as they battled the Yankees on the road. Moneyline bettors who got the Yankees at -148 were rewarded, while the 7 combined runs moved the game PUSH for totals bettors.

Brian Wilson worked out privately for New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson on Saturday in California.

Wilson, 30, underwent Tommy John surgery last April after two early season appearances.

He has indicated he will be ready for Opening Day, although a major league source said the reliever is not yet able to demonstrate in workouts that he is back to pre-surgery form.

The source speculated that the Mets willingly would sign Wilson to a minor league deal now, but Wilson agreeing to such an offer seems a stretch. As a result, the negotiation process will continue.

USA Today had earlier reported Alderson watching Wilson’s workout, which is believed to have taken place at UCLA.

Wilson was nontendered by the San Francisco Giants in November after earning $8.5 million in 2012.

The Mets need late-inning arms in their bullpen, although they already have closer Frank Francisco under contract for the upcoming season at $6.5 million.

Francisco underwent surgery in December to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, but Mets officials have suggested he will be ready by spring training.

Wilson, if he ultimately signed with the Mets, would provide manager Terry Collins with another late-inning option and would not necessarily unseat Francisco as closer.

Wilson is a three-time All-Star. His 48 saves in 2010 led the majors and tied a Giants single-season record. From 2008 through 2011, Wilson allowed only 15.1 percent of inherited runners to score — the best rate in the majors.
