The Cleveland Browns can take a huge step toward ending the NFL’s longest active playoff appearance drought on Sunday with a win against the New York Jets in East Rutherford, N.J.

Cleveland (10-4) can lock up a playoff spot in the AFC with a win over the Jets, and a loss by any of three other AFC contenders: Baltimore, Miami or Indianapolis.

In addition, Cleveland sits just a game back of the suddenly slumping Steelers (11-3) in the AFC North and will host their biggest rivals in Week 17.

The Browns haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, and the 10-win season is the team’s first since 2007. But first-year coach Kevin Stefanski said no one in the organization is looking past the Jets (1-13).

“Not for me,” Stefanski quipped when asked if his one-week-at-a-time approach will be tested more than usual this week. “This is the NFL. It’s not hard for me to explain what we’re in for.

“We know what we’re getting into.”

New York shocked the league last week with a 23-20 upset win at the Los Angeles Rams. Sam Darnold was solid, throwing for 207 yards and a touchdown while the Jets enjoyed a rare turnover-free day.

“It’s the greatest feeling in sports,” Darnold said after the Jets’ win.

But the victory came with consequences. The win moved New York out of the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft and, presumably, the right to snag Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Instead, the Jets are currently slotted with the No. 2 pick behind the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If that wasn’t enough to dull the positive vibes from the team’s first win of 2020, the club added standout defensive lineman Quinnen Williams (neck/concussion) and inside linebacker Harvey Langi (neck) to the Injured/Reserve list this week, effectively ending the season for both.

And Wednesday, the Jets placed tight end Ryan Griffin on the COVID-19/Reserve list.

“We’re running thin, those practice squad guys will get an opportunity this week,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “We’ve got to put some pieces together.”

It’s not a task Gase and midseason replacement defensive coordinator Frank Bush will relish with a red-hot Cleveland offense coming in. The Browns rank third in the NFL in rushing offense (152.6 yards per game) and Baker Mayfield has stitched together a month of high-level play.

In Cleveland’s last four games, Mayfield is averaging 308 passing yards, with 10 touchdowns and one interception. The Browns have won four of their past five.

“(Mayfield) has been the same guy, every single day,” Stefanski said.

And while the Browns are plotting potential playoff scenarios, the Jets are pondering what could be a turbulent offseason. New York has to make a decision on Darnold, who’s about to enter the fourth year of his rookie contract, and that’s been complicated with losing the rights to draft Lawrence.

Gase, under contract for two more years, is also on the hot seat and may not be around for the next stage of the Jets’ rebuild, yet he claims he’s not feeling any added pressure. Gase said Wednesday he hasn’t had any discussions with CEO Christopher Johnson about his future in New York.

“Nothing I’m really worried about,” Gase said.

The Browns could be without two starters on Sunday as right guard Wyatt Teller (ankle) and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (neck) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Stefanski expected Richardson to be available, however, and the defense did see safety Andrew Sendejo (concussion) return to full practice.

Cleveland also designated a return from IR for safety Ronnie Harrison (shoulder), who has been out since Nov. 29.

Besides Williams, Langi, and Griffin, the Jets were missing cornerback Javelin Guidry (knee) from practice on Wednesday.

This is new territory for the New England Patriots.

When they finish the season Sunday at home against the New York Jets, it will mark the first time since 2008 that the last game of the regular season won’t be a tune-up for the playoffs.

At 6-9, New England will endure its first losing year since 2000, the first year Bill Belichick coached the team.

“Let’s finish what we started,” said Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater. “We started a race and obviously, we’re not going to win that race, but if we have that ability to do so, let’s finish that race and let’s finish it the right way.

“Let’s go out and represent ourselves in the best way possible, and not just ourselves: all the people that made the season possible for us.”

As recently as Week 14, it appeared there might be a path for New England to play January football. After a 45-0 shellacking of the Los Angeles Chargers, it was 6-6 and appearing to peak when Belichick teams tend to.

But the Patriots’ offense, a source of concern all year, simply petered out in the last three games. New England has scored just one touchdown — Cam Newton’s 9-yard run in the second quarter of Monday night’s 38-9 blowout loss to Buffalo — and 24 points.

That was the lone highlight for Newton, who was pulled in the third quarter after throwing for just 34 yards on 5 of 10 accuracy. Jarrett Stidham took over and wasn’t much better, going 4 of 11 for 44 yards.

Speculation is rife on whether Stidham will start against the Jets, although one might have better luck stopping Michael Jordan in his prime than getting Belichick to reveal the identity of his quarterback in Week 17.

“I think it’s a combination of things that we can all do better,” Belichick said about the offense.

Meanwhile, New York (2-13) may have disappointed those that were hoping for an 0-16 finish, but it’s pleased itself with back-to-back wins over playoff contenders.

After getting the bagel out of its win column with a 23-20 decision at the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15, the Jets kept Cleveland from clinching last week with a 23-16 verdict in the Meadowlands.

The consecutive victories aren’t likely to keep coach Adam Gase from getting fired after the season ends. And they kept New York from possibly drafting Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence with the top overall pick, but they’ve given rookies like wide receiver Denzel Mims hope for the future.

“I think we just sat down, watched film and saw all the mistakes we were making,” he said. “We saw all the plays we left on the field. We’re just trying to do everything we can to get better.”

In the wins, quarterback Sam Darnold has looked like the guy capable of propelling the Jets to contention. After going 22 of 31 in his return to Los Angeles, the former USC star hit two crucial touchdown passes against Cleveland. And in both games, the mistakes that have consistently derailed this offense didn’t occur.

“Winning cures everything,” Darnold said. “When you win, the guys have more energy throughout the week.”

New York will play without starting running back Frank Gore (chest/lung) and backup La’Mical Perine (COVID-19). Ty Johnson will get most of the carries in New England.

With a new head coach, a new star running back and a second-year quarterback poised to take the next step, there is some optimism surrounding the New York Jets entering the 2019 season. Their bid to end an eight-year playoff drought begins Sunday at home against the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase was brought to New York to patrol the sidelines after three years at the helm in Miami, and he hopes for good things out of Le’Veon Bell — who sat out last year after compiling nearly 2,000 total yards with Pittsburgh in 2017 — and signal-caller Sam Darnold. “We’ll probably have some ups and downs and some adversity, but we’ll figure out what kind of team we have, especially in that first quarter of the season,” Gase recently told reporters. The Bills will be leaning on a second-year quarterback of their own in Josh Allen, who threw for 2,074 yards in 12 games and electrified the offense at times with his legs, rushing for 631 yards and eight touchdowns. Included in Allen’s promising rookie campaign was a matchup with the Jets on Dec. 9 in which he ran nine times for 101 yards and a score.

ABOUT THE BILLS (2018: 6-10, 3RD IN AFC EAST): Allen will look for support from a backfield that jettisoned veteran LeSean McCoy last weekend and has new faces in the ageless Frank Gore and rookie standout Devin Singletary. Cole Beasley, who had 65 catches a year ago with Dallas, gives Allen a seasoned target in the slot, and former 1,000-yard man John Brown also joins the receving corps. Rookie defensive tackle Ed Oliver had a strong preseason and will be a key cog in a promising defense that allowed just 294.1 yards per game last year — second-fewest in the NFL.

ABOUT THE JETS (2018: 4-12, 4TH IN AFC EAST): For his part, Bell seems more than ready to reassert himself as one of the league’s top backs, despite having not played in almost 19 months and seeing no game action in the preseason. “I can carry 50 (times) if you ask me,” Bell told reporters. “When I say, ‘Don’t hold back,’ I mean literally that. I don’t want to go out there and try to sprinkle me in or anything like that. I’m ready to play football. I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment. A lot of people are excited to see me play. Quadruple that, and that’s how I feel.” Bell will be trying to revive a ground attack that ranked 29th in the NFL in yards per carry (4.0) in 2018 and was held to 90 yards or fewer eight times in the final 10 games.

A pair of lengthy losing streaks came to an end last week for both the Houston Texans and New York Jets, who have decidedly different goals heading into the final three games of the season. New York is trying to finish on a strong note after ending a six-game slide while Houston hopes to inch closer to a division title entering Saturday’s matchup at the Jets.

The Texans are sitting atop the AFC South and are in the running for the No. 2 overall seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs despite having a nine-game winning streak halted by visiting Indianapolis last week. Houston follows up Saturday’s matchup with a game at Philadelphia next weekend so its bracing to play in adverse conditions by practicing outdoors. “Our weather right now is not like it is in New York or Philly, but it’s not great here right now,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “So, I think that’s good. Then we’ll just do things during practice to kind of help show him what the elements might be like to the best of our ability.” Rookie Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, returned from a three-game absence to rally New York to a 27-23 victory at Buffalo last week.

ABOUT THE TEXANS (9-4): Houston’s defense was burned for 399 yards by Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck but it ranks fifth in scoring (19.9 points) and should have an easier time containing New York’s pedestrian passing attack. The Texans also are fifth against the run (88.2 yards) and likely will try to apply pressure on Darnold with edge pass rushers J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, who have combined for 19.5 sacks. Quarterback Deshaun Watson has been part of a ground game that averaged 146.1 yards during the winning streak, but running backs Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue were limited to 54 yards last week. Wideout DeAndre Hopkins had a season-low 36 yards last week but has 1,151 yards and nine TDs on the season.

ABOUT THE JETS (4-9): Darnold did not put up eye-popping numbers against the Bills, completing 16 of 24 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but he directed a winning scoring drive after Buffalo went ahead with 2 1/2 minutes to play. “As a kid, you dream of converting two-minute drives and going down there and scoring,” said Darnold, who was intercepted seven times in his previous three games before he was hurt. With Isaiah Crowell ailing and sitting out practice Thursday, Elijah McGuire is expected to get the start after rushing for 60 yards and the game-winning TD on Sunday. New York’s defense has struggled against the run, allowing an average of 132.0 yards rushing.

With little else for which to play in the standings, the New York Jets are seeking a measure of revenge when they travel to Buffalo on Sunday to meet the Bills. The Jets were 3-6 after suffering three straight losses but still hoping to turn things around heading into a Week 10 matchup with the struggling Bills at home, only to lay an egg in an embarrassing 41-10 loss to their AFC East foes.

“Cut to the chase, man: It’s personal,” New York safety Jamal Adams told reporters. “They came in and they whupped us. They don’t like us, we don’t like them, so it’s going to be a tough battle.” The Jets’ slide has reached six in a row and last week’s 26-22 setback at Tennessee was just about as painful, as they blew an early 16-0 lead and lost on a touchdown in the final minute. Buffalo followed up its 31-point win at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 11 with a victory over Jacksonville and a narrow loss at Miami as Sean McDermott’s team displays a more competitive streak. Josh Allen threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 135 more in the 21-17 loss to the Dolphins, and he figures to face off with New York’s Sam Darnold — who expects to return from a foot injury — in a matchup of rookie quarterbacks.

ABOUT THE JETS (3-9): Darnold, who still has a few hurdles to clear before being given Sunday’s start, has stood by for three straight weeks while backup Josh McCown completed 55 percent of his passes with one touchdown and four interceptions. “He has to stay healthy, he has to get the rust off and he has to get the game plan down,” coach Todd Bowles told reporters when asked what Darnold needs to do before being named the starter. A bright spot in last Sunday’s loss was a 156-yard team effort on the ground led by Isaiah Crowell, who had his best total in roughly two months with 98 yards but is hampered by a toe injury heading into this one.

ABOUT THE BILLS (4-8): Allen’s completion percentage stands at an unattractive 52.9 but he’s making a name for himself with his legs, piling up 234 yards and a score on the ground over the last two weeks all while doing his best to avoid much physical abuse. “I’ve done a really good job on protecting myself, whether it’s getting down, sliding, or getting out of bounds,” Allen told reporters. “Obviously, sometimes hits are going to happen. That’s football, whether it’s in the pocket or outside the pocket. But I definitely don’t want to be the leading rusher. We’ve got to get (running back LeSean McCoy) going and guys in the backfield going, and we’re going to be looking forward to do doing that in the next four weeks.” McCoy had a season-high 113 yards and two TDs in the win at New York but has a total of 98 in the two games since.

The Tennessee Titans are going to have to take advantage of a stretch run filled with home games if they’re to remain in the AFC playoff picture. Coming off damaging back-to-back road losses, the Titans begin that stretch Sunday when they host the sliding New York Jets.

Tennessee is 3-1 at home, including an impressive 34-10 triumph over New England on Nov. 11 that put the team at 5-4, and it plays four of its final five in downtown Nashville. “We get to go back to Nissan Stadium,” cornerback Logan Ryan told reporters. “We have the pieces, and we know we are going back home and have to execute. Our season is on the line in a sense. We need to win this game. That’s all that matters. You’re going to see how much we care based on how we play. That’s my mentality.” The Jets have lost five straight by a combined score of 142-56, including last Sunday’s 27-13 loss to the Patriots. Rookie quarterback Sam Darnold (foot) has practiced for the first time in weeks and could return for this one.

ABOUT THE JETS (3-8): Josh McCown has completed just 54.4 percent of his passes with one touchdown and three interceptions in two games filling in for Darnold, and the veteran is also hampered by back and hand injuries. “I mean, yeah,” Darnold told the media when asked if he’s pushing to start this week. “I want to play really bad. But at the same time, I understand it’s a process.” The Jets lead the AFC with 17 interceptions — including four by Darnold in his last game Nov. 4 at Miami — and the passers get little support from a running game that has averaged 77.5 yards per game since its out-of-nowhere 323-yard effort in a win over Denver on Oct. 7.

ABOUT THE TITANS (5-6): With two home games in a span of five days (Jacksonville pays a visit Thursday night), Tennessee is eager to set a tone in front of the home fans. “The goal is you don’t get down against the Jets,” said coach Mike Vrabel, who saw his team start strong and never look back in the rout of the Patriots. “If we start fast, which I hope we do and continue on that path with a lead and try to keep it so we can control the game. We will try to start fast and execute early and play complementary. We have to play hard and give our fans something to cheer about.” Of course, that didn’t pay dividends when the Titans lost an early 10-0 lead in last week’s 34-17 loss to Houston, a result that came in spite of Marcus Mariota completing 22-of-23 passes for 303 yards and two scores.

The Miami Dolphins have answered a sterling start to the season with four double-digit losses in their last five outings to cloud their visions of grasping a third postseason berth since 2008. The Dolphins bid to turn the page as they begin the second half of their season on Sunday versus the New York Jets, against whom they’ve won four of their last five encounters.

With Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) sidelined for a third straight game, Brock Osweiler completed just 56.8 percent of his passes with one interception in a 42-23 loss at Houston on Thursday. Miami has fared better a home, however, posting a 3-1 mark while its lone win on the road came at MetLife Stadium, courtesy of a 20-12 victory over New York on Sept. 16. Rookie Sam Darnold tossed a pair of interceptions in that contest, but has been picked off five times in his last four and threw for a career-low 153 yards in Sunday’s 24-10 setback in Chicago. “(It’s) very frustrating,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said of his team losing two straight and residing at 3-5 for the third straight year. “… We got to put our heads down and we got to correct this and we got to try to come out and win some ballgames. The season is not over. … You don’t like where you are, but we dug ourselves this hole, we have to dig ourselves out.”

ABOUT THE JETS (3-5): Wideouts Quincy Enunwa (team-leading 22 catches) and Robby Anderson (club-best 314 receiving yards) missed practice on Thursday and are in line to sit out their respective third and second straight games due to ankle injuries. A depleted passing attack hasn’t done any favors to New York’s rushing game, which has been stuck in neutral with a league-worst 2.8 yards per carry over the last three contests heading into a meeting with Miami, against which it amassed just 42 yards on 19 attempts in Week 2. Isaiah Crowell rushed for 35 yards in that contest and has followed a 219-yard performance versus Denver that earned him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors with 94 yards on 37 carries over the last three games.

ABOUT THE DOLPHINS (4-4): Like New York, Miami is also dealing with injuries to its wideouts, although former first-round pick DeVante Parker stepped up in the absence of the injured Kenny Stills (groin) and Albert Wilson (hip, injured reserve) with six catches for a career-high 134 yards versus the Texans. “I already know who I am as a player. I still got the talent,” said the 25-year-old Parker, who missed five of the team’s first seven games of the season. Parker was inactive in the first encounter versus the Jets, but gashed the club with eight receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown on Sept. 24, 2017.

The Chicago Bears have fallen just short in back-to-back losses and hope to have enough to get to the finish line this Sunday when they host the New York Jets. After a three-point overtime loss at Miami on Oct. 14, the Bears went back and forth with the high-powered New England Patriots before falling 38-31, with a Hail Mary completion on the final play leaving them one yard short.

“Coming up one yard short and not tying the game and going to overtime, that’s not good enough anymore,” quarterback Mitchell Trubisky told reporters after the loss in which he was 26-for-50 for 333 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Jets scored 76 points during a two-game winning streak before they were stifled in a 37-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home last week. Rookie Sam Darnold completed only 17-of-42 attempts while throwing a season-high three interceptions and getting sacked three times. “He tries to get better and learn from his mistakes,” New York head coach Todd Bowles told reporters of Darnold’s mindset after the rocky performance. “He studies. And he works to get better every day. So attitude-wise, he’s been great.”

ABOUT THE JETS (3-4): The locker room received a bit of a blow when the team announced that running back Bilal Powell, who ranks second with 343 rushing yards, was to undergo season-ending neck surgery that could end the career of the longest-tenured Jet. “It’s one of the toughest things,” nose tackle Steve McLendon told reporters. “It almost makes me emotional because I know how hard he worked. … This is how a lot of guys feed their family, and you never want to see someone lose that ability.” The team will lean a little more on leading rusher Isaiah Crowell, but he has been hampered by a foot injury since his franchise-record 219 yards against Denver in Week 5 and had just 29 yards on 11 carries last week.

ABOUT THE BEARS (3-3): A Chicago defense that dominated in a 3-1 start has given up nearly 1,000 total yards and 44 first downs during the two-game slide, a trend it hopes to reverse against the 21-year-old Darnold. “As a rookie, we want to make him make a mistake,” safety Eddie Jackson told the Chicago Sun Times. “We’re going to send pressure at him and hopefully get some turnovers.” Star linebacker Khalil Mack had five sacks and four forced fumbles though the first four games but has zero in both categories over the last two contests as he deals with an ankle issue that has limited him in practice this week.
