The Oakland Raiders clinched an AFC playoff spot and are focused on earning a first-round bye.

The Indianapolis Colts are in a precarious position and could miss out on the postseason for the second year in a row.

Yet the Colts have thrived on the road and seek their fifth straight victory on enemy soil as they attempt to save their season when they visit the Raiders on Saturday (4:05 p.m. ET, CBS).

Indianapolis (7-7) sits one game behind the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans in the AFC South and is two games behind the Miami Dolphins in the wild-card derby. But the Colts’ chances to win the division or claim a wild-card are exceptionally bleak.

In the AFC South, Indianapolis must win both its last two games to have a chance. The Colts would need the Texans to lose their last two contests — including one against the Titans — and have Tennessee lose Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Miami Dolphins (9-5) currently possess the last AFC wild-card spot and the Colts would need the Dolphins, Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens to all lose their final two games.

Of course, beating Oakland (11-3) might be the biggest hurdle of them all.

“It’s sort of a one-game season for us,” Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck said. “I know from our perspective as an offense they’re a really good defensive unit. They force turnovers, they’ve got good edge rushers and they’ve got good cover guys. It will be a great challenge.”

Luck is bothered by minor shoulder and thumb injures and doesn’t expect to be hindered on game day.

In fact, Luck (3,631 yards, 27 touchdowns) is likely the healthier of the two starting quarterbacks.

Oakland star Derek Carr is playing with an injured right pinkie finger that has affected his play.

Carr is enjoying an MVP-caliber season with 3,705 yards and 25 touchdown passes against just six interceptions but he is just 36-of-71 passing for 330 yards over the past two games. A telling sign is that the Raiders’ offense is also operating nearly exclusively out of the shotgun to prevent the center snap exchange from irritating Carr’s injured finger.

“We’re doing the best we can to put us in the best position to win,” offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. “Since Derek hurt his finger, we’re 3-1. We want to keep winning these games and one of the factors in winning these games is ball security. That’s a real vital issue.

“As we know the pinkie and the thumb are really your locking mechanisms to hold onto a football and so when you got a pinkie or a thumb that’s injured, you just have to be as smart as you can to secure that football, because that’s important to the way that we win these games. That relates to everybody, not just the Raiders.”

Carr has re-energized the Raiders and last Sunday’s win in San Diego clinched the team’s first playoff berth in 14 years. Oakland has the second-best record in the AFC behind the New England Patriots (12-2) and also holds a one-game lead in the AFC West over the Kansas City Chiefs (10-4).

Carr was one of seven Raiders named to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday. The other selections were defensive end Khalil Mack, safety Reggie Nelson, receiver Amari Cooper and three members of the offensive line — center Rodney Hudson, left guard Kelechi Osemele and left tackle Donald Penn.

The Colts garnered just two selections in receiver T.Y. Hilton and punter Pat McAfee as Luck was passed over.

Hilton ranks second in the NFL in receiving yardage (1,248 yards) and has caught 81 passes.

Indianapolis running back Frank Gore needs 109 yards over the final two games to become the first Colts’ player since Joseph Addai (1,072 in 2007) to reach 1,000 rushing yards. Gore, who is in his second season with Indianapolis, topped 1,000 yards eight times during his 10-year tenure with the San Francisco 49ers.

“Some guys have just been able to prolong their careers and play at a high level, and he’s one of those guys,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said of Gore. “Really talented. Has a great nose for that yard, that hidden yard. He knows how to make people miss. He knows how to run behind his blocks. I think he’s a really good player. That’s why he’s been a good player for a long time.

“The other part is he looks fresh. His feet, his legs, he doesn’t look like an older back late in the year.”

A productive day by Gore could slow the Oakland pass rush headed by Mack. He had a streak of eight consecutive games with at least one sack halted against the Chargers last Sunday and has 11 sacks on the season.

Nelson has four interceptions and his 34 picks since 2007 are most in the NFL.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano is well aware of the Oakland talent and knows it will be one big task to keep his team’s season alive.

“We know their record, it speaks for itself,” Pagano said. “It’s a confident team, very aggressive in all three phases and they’ve learned how to win. They’re playing with a great deal of confidence.”

Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers

The Oakland Raiders are on the verge of ending a 14-year playoff drought.

A victory over San Diego will do the trick and the Raiders are focused on securing the long-craved postseason spot when they visit the Chargers on Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS).

Oakland (10-3) is tied for first place in the AFC West and has a two-game lead in the wild-card chase with three games to play.

The possible realization of the goal prompted quarterback Derek Carr to reminisce on his rookie campaign of 2014 — when saying things were bleak seems a bit kind.

“Starting 0-10 was not fun. It makes these moments so awesome,” Carr told reporters. “It makes these moments really cool to already have 10 wins and those things. I know for our team, our sole focus is beating the Chargers because if we don’t, we’re still sitting there hoping and wishing. Our focus is just going down to San Diego and trying to come out with a win.”

The Chargers (5-8) won’t be part of the playoffs and also face an unclear future. San Diego voters shot down a stadium proposal last month and the team moved closer to a relocation to Los Angeles on Wednesday when NFL owners unanimously approved a tenant-lease contract between the Chargers and Los Angeles Rams.

The Chargers have until Jan. 15 to exercise an option to move to Los Angeles. Team president Dean Spanos has repeatedly stated he won’t announce a decision until following the season.

Sunday’s contest could be the next-to-last home game in San Diego and it will likely be one in which standout running back Melvin Gordon misses due to hip and knee injuries.

Coach Mike McCoy termed it “highly unlikely” that Gordon will play against Oakland.

Gordon has rushed for 997 yards and is craving the 1,000-yard mark after experiencing a disappointing rookie season in 2015.

“It would mean a lot but I’m just going to take it for what it is,” Gordon told reporters. “If I feel I can go back out there and be ready, I’m going to go back out there. … I know my body. If I can go out there and feel I can be productive, then I’ll be out there. If I can’t, we’ve got the guys who will make it up for me.”

The Chargers’ most promising young defensive player is also ailing. Rookie defensive end Joey Bosa sprained his neck in last Sunday’s 28-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers but there is hope that he will play.

Meanwhile, Carr has enjoyed an MVP-caliber season with 3,492 yards and 24 touchdowns against just five interceptions.

But he also is coming off an atrocious performance in a 21-13 loss to the Chiefs on Dec. 8. The combination of frigid conditions and an injured right pinkie finger didn’t help as Carr was 17-of-41 passing for 117 yards.

The showing was easily Carr’s worst of the season but he made it clear his finger had nothing to do with the sub-par effort.

“It was just execution — literally inches,” Carr said. “There’s a whole bunch of plays that I think about that we always hit and for whatever reason, we just missed by an inch. Sometimes that happens in practice and you never want it to happen in a game. This time it did.”

Carr’s favorite target is second-year receiver Amari Cooper, who went over the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight campaign. Cooper, who has 73 receptions, ranks sixth in the NFL with 1,010 receiving yards.

Oakland leads the NFL with a plus-15 turnover margin and is receiving remarkable play from standout defensive end Khalil Mack.

Mack is tied for third in the NFL with 11 sacks and has recorded at least one in eight consecutive games, two off the record shared by DeMarcus Ware (Dallas, 2007-08) and Simon Fletcher (Denver, 1992-93). Mack is shooting to become the first player with a sack in nine consecutive games in a single season.

Mack also has forced five fumbles and his presence can’t rate as a comfortable feeling for Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Though he has passed for 3,589 yards and 27 touchdowns, Rivers also has been intercepted a league-worst 17 times. He was personally responsible for five turnovers in the loss to the Panthers — three on interceptions and two strip-sack fumbles — as the Chargers’ turnover count grew to an NFL-worst 30.

“I know better than that but at the same time I don’t want to stand back there and throw balls away and get beat 35-3,” Rivers said. “It just felt like that was the way it was going, and again, that is no excuse to make some bad mistakes and turnovers.”

Oakland has prevailed in the past three meetings, including a 34-31 home win on Oct. 9. Carr passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Rivers passed for 359 yards and four touchdowns and was intercepted twice.

Derek Carr’s spirited play during the Oakland Raiders’ six-game winning streak has placed the third-year quarterback in the lively discussion for NFL MVP honors. Carr has thrown seven touchdown passes over his last three games and 12 during the winning streak as the first-place Raiders head into an AFC West showdown with the host Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Carr rallied Oakland from a 15-point halftime deficit in Sunday’s 38-24 victory over Buffalo, all while working exclusively out of the shotgun/pistol to protect his injured right pinkie finger. “It brought me back to my Fresno (State) days a little bit, so that was nice with the tempo and those kind of things,” said the 25-year-old Carr, who will look to avenge a far less effective performance in Week 6 when he threw for 225 yards in a 26-10 loss to Kansas City. The Chiefs kept Carr in park with a successful ground game, highlighted by Spencer Ware rolling up a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown. The 25-year-old Ware, who will look to light up the 29th-ranked Raiders’ run defense that is yielding 124.8 yards per contest, also found the end zone in Sunday’s 29-28 victory at Atlanta.

ABOUT THE RAIDERS (10-2): While Carr is being mentioned in NFL MVP discussion, defensive end Khalil Mack is hearing his name bandied about for NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. Mack has registered at least one of his team-leading 10 sacks in each of the last seven games, while also recording four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception in that span. Latavius Murray, who has three touchdowns in his last four encounters with Kansas City, scored twice last week to increase his rushing touchdown total to 11 – good enough for a tie for third in the league. Second-year wideout Amari Cooper collected 10 receptions for 129 yards in the first meeting with the Chiefs, but was limited to just two catches on Sunday versus the Bills.

”That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to sign back because I knew they were going to be a Super Bowl contender with all the young talent they had just based on last year,” Alexander said.

He’ll get an up-close look at the resurgent Raiders (9-2) on Sunday when the Buffalo Bills (6-5) visit Oakland.

While the Raiders’ success comes as little surprise to Alexander, the production Alexander has provided the Bills has been a stunner. Known as mostly a special teams standout during his first nine seasons in the NFL, Alexander has emerged as a big-time pass rusher in Buffalo.

He has 10 sacks on the season for coach Rex Ryan – one more than he had in his first nine years in the league.

”We did not see that in him or we wouldn’t have let Rex get him,” Del Rio said ”I’m really happy for a guy like Lorenzo. He’s a consummate professional. This is a guy that busts his butt, does everything he can, every day to be a true professional. We had him around thinking that’s what we were getting is that, the leadership part of it and, honestly, we missed on this part where he’s getting 10 sacks.”

Adding to that total against the Raiders won’t be easy. Oakland has allowed a league-low 12 sacks thanks to a powerful line and Carr’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly.

”You go into a game thinking you’ll be lucky to get one sack,” Ryan said. ”It’s a combination of that offensive line, but another thing is you have a quarterback that’s not going to take sacks. He’ll get rid of it if he has to.”

Here are some other things to watch:

STOP THE RUN: The Raiders have had issues stopping the run, allowing 4.6 yards per carry and holding just two of the past 10 opponents under 100 yards. They will face an especially tough test against LeSean McCoy and Buffalo. The Bills are averaging 5.3 yards per carry – the most in the league in four years – and are seeking their first five-game streak of 150-yard rushing games since 1975. Even if the Raiders manage to keep McCoy under control, quarterback Tyrod Taylor is also dangerous with 423 yards rushing and a 6.3 average.

”It’s like they have two running backs in the backfield,” Mack said.

PROTECT THE BALL: No team has avoided turnovers as well as the Bills. Buffalo’s six turnovers are the fewest through 11 games in NFL history. The previous low over that span was eight shared by five teams, most recently Kansas City last year. The single-season record is 10, set by New England in 2010 and matched by San Francisco the following season. Taylor has four INTs and one lost fumble and rookie RB Jonathan Williams lost a fumble for the other turnover.

”It’s my job to take calculated risks, but at the same time be smart with where I’m going with the football,” Taylor said. ”Turnovers definitely don’t lead to good things in this league.”

BIG TARGET: The one part of the Raiders’ offense that hasn’t been clicking all year is the tight end in the passing game. That’s what made Clive Walford’s big game last week so important. Walford had three catches for 43 yards against Carolina, including a 14-yard catch on third-and-11, followed by a 12-yard TD on the tying drive in the fourth quarter.

”It shows that Derek still believes in me and has a lot of faith in me,” Walford said. ”I’m just grateful that I can be there for him to make a play for him like that.”

OAKLAND DROUGHT: Oakland has not been kind to the Bills in their history. Buffalo has not won a game there since Jack Kemp led them to a 31-10 victory there in 1966 . The Bills have lost all eight meetings, although they did beat the Raiders in overtime in 1991 in Los Angeles.

”Fifty years ago? Phew,” Ryan said. ”That’s amazing. Woof. You talk about a drought.”

REUNION: Del Rio and Ryan have a long history, having served as defensive assistants together in Baltimore when the Ravens won the Super Bowl following the 2000 season. Both credited former Ravens coach Brian Billick for their success and remembered fondly the days in Baltimore together when they would pretend to be draft experts Mel Kiper and Joel Buchsbaum and try to predict picks in advance.

”It was fun for us,” Ryan said. ”We got fired up for the draft. We’d have our notes and be going back and forth. It was a good time.”

This is a trip that could go a long way to define the season for the Carolina Panthers.

The Oakland Raiders are hoping they’re recovered enough from their latest voyage to be able to continue their winning ways.

The teams meet Sunday at Oakland-Alamedia County Coliseum.

“We’re talking about recovering from the trip,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said. “It’s all about what’s next for us and right now it’s the Carolina Panthers. … Busy turning the page to the Carolina Panthers.”

The Raiders, who are the leaders in the AFC West, are coming off Monday night’s victory against the Houston Texans in Mexico City.

The Panthers have packed up for the long haul. They’re staying on the West Coast after this game to take on the Seattle Seahawks the following week.

It shapes up as a crucial time for the reigning NFC champions.

“We’re going there for two reasons and two reasons only,” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said, offering a twist on the one-game-at-a-time mantra. “They’re both important. Each game has (its) own individual meaning.”

Rivera, though, said the focus is clearly on the Raiders as the Panthers (4-6) embark on this trip. They’ll practice at San Jose State in between the games.

The Panthers are somewhat wounded, particularly with the likelihood that linebacker Luke Kuechly won’t play after entering the concussion protocol from the Nov. 17 game against New Orleans.

Carolina was fortunate to have extra time to prepare because of that Thursday night game. The injury report grew considerably, especially with defensive end Mario Addison and center Ryan Kalil exiting and their statuses for the next game uncertain.

“Hopefully they can come back and we can make a push,” Panthers fullback Mike Tolbert said.

The Panthers, who’ve won three of their past four games, are in a wait-and-see situation regarding the linebacking because Kuechly’s normal backup is A.J. Klein, who missed the most-recent game because of a concussion.

The Raiders (8-2) appear in much better position, if nothing else they’re in a more enviable spot in the standings. But winning the division remains a priority and there’s lots of work to be done regarding that mission.

“It still begins with winning the division,” Del Rio said. “It’s the surest way to get a spot in that playoff tournament.”

With accolades and attention starting to fall on the Raiders, they’re intent on maintaining the right approach.

“You set goals and you want to reach certain things,” quarterback Derek Carr said. “Everybody expects great things and when good things come our way you have to know how to be humble.

“Anytime you have 10 games and you have eight wins, we’re thankful for that. If we don’t win another one, it’s not going to mean anything. Our focus right now is on beating Carolina.”

Del Rio, who was the defensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2002, said the Raiders have developed good tendencies during their four-game winning streak. He said there are challenges the team must encounter in the aftermath of the out-of-country trip and dealing with a shortened week of preparation.

The season’s foundation is something he’s counting on.

“As you have success and build on that and have a reference point to go back on,” Del Rio said. “I think our guys have embraced the idea of competing for the full 60 minutes. We’ve found ways to win, but it has been different ways each week.”

While Carr has become a focal point for Oakland’s offense, the team has thrived on balance and versatility. That’s something the Raiders figure can work to their advantage.

“To know that we can win a football game either way,” Carr said. “We can run the football or throw the football. Either way, I’m all for it as long as we keep on winning.”

The Panthers have been shoddy in converting scoring chances into touchdowns and quarterback Cam Newton’s inconsistency has created concerns. Turnovers and red-zone shortcomings have been glaring at times.

“We will make plays and hopefully we will make enough to win football games,” Rivera said.

Rivera has put a positive spin on the trip’s potential even though it means facing a pair of divisional leaders in consecutive weeks. From an internal standpoint, there are gains to be made for the Panthers.

“It’s an opportunity for those guys to do some bonding,” Rivera said. “Hopefully, it will be a good opportunity for our guys.”

This will be only the sixth meeting between the Panthers and Raiders, and the first in Oakland since 2008. The Panthers won the 2012 meeting to forge a 3-2 series lead.

In addition to Carr, Oakland lost three defensive starters to injuries in the opener. Safety Charles Woodson separated his shoulder in the final minute of the contest and is questionable for Sunday as he participated in Wednesday’s early-practice drills without equipment. Cornerback D.J. Hayden and defensive tackle Justin Ellis went down with ankle injuries, although the former practiced on Wednesday.

The Raiders were a 33-13 loser in their most recent outing at home against the Bengals. They failed to cover the +3-point spread as underdogs, while the total score (46) made winners of OVER bettors.

Without Suggs, more will be expected from fellow linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who recorded a franchise-record 17 sacks last season. To attempt to fill the hole created by the injury to the six-time Pro Bowler, Baltimore signed Jason Babin on Wednesday. The veteran linebacker spent last season with the New York Jets, registering two sacks in 16 games. Baltimore’s offense was woeful against Denver, gaining a league-low 173 yards while failing to produce a touchdown.

Baltimore lost its last outing, a 19-13 result against the Broncos on September 13. The Ravens failed to cover in that game as a +4.5-point underdog, while the 32 combined points took the game UNDER the total.

Oakland pulled off its first win in a year with a 24-20 home triumph over Kansas City on Nov. 20 and had a few extra days to prepare for the Rams, only to commit five turnovers and get run off the field last week. “We watched the tape, made the corrections, moved on and (we’re) getting on to San Francisco,” Oakland coach Tony Sparano told reporters. “You move on quickly. You move on just like you do every other game.” Rookie quarterback Derek Carr threw a pair of interceptions and was replaced late by Matt Schaub, but Sparano is confident in Carr going forward.

Oakland lost its last outing, a 52-0 result against the Rams on November 30. The Raiders failed to cover in that game as a +6-point underdog, while the 52 combined points took the game OVER the total.

San Francisco has a trip to Seattle coming up next week and finish up at home against San Diego and Arizona but is not overlooking the lowly Raiders. “There’s no bad teams in the National Football League,” Harbaugh told reporters. “The NFL has done a great job making each game a test, and they’ve exceeded in expectations in that regard.” The 49ers have reached 20 points in one of their last six games and quarterback Colin Kaepernick does not have more than 24 rushing yards in any of those contests while completing 58.1 percent of his passes in that span.

The 49ers were a 19-3 loser in their most recent outing at home against the Seahawks. They failed to cover the -1-point spread as favorites, while the total score (22) made winners of UNDER bettors.

Former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros and other city officials traveled to the Bay Area for the meeting, which comes about four months after Davis and other team officials had met with the group in San Antonio.

“We’re going to present San Antonio’s strengths and assets in the most persuasive way possible,” Cisneros told the San Antonio Express-News before the meeting. “We have a very, very good opportunity to set it forth in a way the Raiders can digest.”

Team officials declined to comment on the meeting.

The Raiders are in the final year of their lease at O.co Coliseum and are seeking a long-term deal. Davis has said his first choice is to remain in Oakland but he has been unable to reach a deal for a new stadium with local officials. The Raiders also could move back to Los Angeles, their home from 1982 to ’94.

The Raiders are the only NFL team that shares its stadium with a baseball team. The Athletics recently signed a 10-year lease to remain in Oakland, but that agreement includes a provision to allow the Raiders to knock down the Coliseum for a new football stadium.

The Raiders left Oakland once before, when they moved to Los Angeles following the 1981 season. Late owner Al Davis brought the team back to Oakland in 1995.

Raiders officials also attended a college football game earlier this year at the Alamodome in San Antonio to determine if it was suitable as a temporary home, should they decide to move there.
