Three-game win streaks will be on the line when No. 15 Ohio State hosts Purdue on Tuesday.

The Buckeyes (11-3, 5-3 Big Ten) got their third victory in a row Saturday, an 87-81 decision at Illinois. Following successive road wins, they return home, where they are unbeaten this season in eight games, including three Big Ten contests.

Tuesday’s game was moved from Jan. 27 to accommodate schedule changes in the conference due to COVID-19 protocols, and it lands in a spot that means Ohio State will have one more day of rest than the Boilermakers (10-5, 5-3), who defeated visiting Penn State 80-72 on Sunday.

The short turnaround is rare for regular-season conference games. It’s the first time in 20 years that Purdue has had had just a one-day break between Big Ten games (Feb. 27 and 29, 2000).

“That’s just part of it,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said on the Boilermakers’ postgame radio show Sunday. “We’re in this position because somebody else has some issues and then everything gets rearranged.”

The Boilermakers recovered from a 1-3 slump over the new year, losing to three ranked teams – Iowa, Rutgers and Illinois — to beat Michigan State, Indiana and Penn State. Now they are amid a tough stretch in which they play three times in six days, culminating Friday when they host No. 7 Michigan.

Purdue defeated the Buckeyes 67-60 at home on Dec. 16, but Ohio State is a changed team.

The Buckeyes are finding their rhythm despite the absence of point guard CJ Walker and backup Jimmy Sotos. Walker (hand) has missed the past three games and Sotos (shoulder) two. Forward Justice Sueing has taken over some of the ball-handling role and freshman Meechie Johnson, who has played three games since enrolling in December, has stepped in as well.

“What we found out, what we kind of knew, is that we were going to have some depth, and a strength of our team could be our depth if our guys embrace the role and play it at a high level,” Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said. “So far, they’ve done that, and we’ll see if they continue to do that.

Not only was Johnson added, but Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns made his Buckeyes’ debut three days after the loss to Purdue after rehabbing from multiple knee surgeries.

“We’ve made a ton of progress as a team, chemistry-wise and so on,” said Towns, who’s had three 11-point performances in eight games. “We’re finding each other where we like our spots to be and you see so many guys on the team coming alive because of it.”

Purdue likely can’t get away with the miserable shooting it had against Penn State when the Boilermakers missed their first 14 attempts on 3-point shots. They finished the game 6 for 32 (18.8 percent).

What’s more, Purdue led Penn State by 17 with 9 1/2 minutes to play but it became a 76-72 score with 17 seconds left.

“The last 10 minutes was just a torture chamber to coach,” Painter said, “with everything you had to go through like missing free throws, letting guys hit pull up 35-footers, going for rebounds, not boxing out and letting them get it.”

Northwestern looks to build off a successful 2017 season when it kicks off the new campaign on the road against Purdue on Thursday. The Wildcats are coming off a 10-win season, which culminated in a Music City Bowl victory, and their hopes of posting another double-digit win total rests squarely on the health of senior quarterback Clayton Thorson, who is a game-time decision for the opener after undergoing knee surgery in the offseason.

Northwestern owns the nation’s current longest winning streak by a Power 5 team at eight games and aims to extend its run by beating Purdue for the fifth straight time. There’s reason for optimism in West Lafayette as well after the Boilermakers finished last season with a winning record for the first time since 2011. Head coach Jeff Brohm flirted with a few high-profile openings in the offseason, but his decision to return for a second year bodes well for the offense, which returns nine starters, including quarterbacks David Blough and Elijah Sindelar as the Boilermakers search for their first win over Northwestern in eight years. “This year is a challenging schedule and opening up with Northwestern at home is a great opportunity for our football team,” Brohm told reporters.” We’re excited that the expectations have risen but I think our players will respond.”

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (2017: 10-3): Thorson threw for 2,844 yards and 15 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in the bowl win against Kentucky and will be backed up by walk-on T.J. Green, who could make his first career start if Thorson is not medically cleared to play on Thursday. Jeremy Larkin averaged six yards a carry last season and will shoulder the load at running back as he replaces Justin Jackson, who was drafted by the San Diego Chargers after leaving Evansville as Northwestern’s leading all-time rusher. “We’re fully aware of the challenge that we have ahead of us,” Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald told reporters. “We’re playing an incredibly well coached, outstanding football team on the road.”

ABOUT PURDUE (2017: 7-6): Blough was the starter before suffering a season-ending ankle injury on Nov. 4 while Sindelar threw for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns despite playing the final three games with a torn ACL, and both players are expected to share snaps in the season opener. Wide receiver Jackson Anthrop led the team with 47 receptions last season and should see his role expand with the departures of Anthony Mahoungou and Gregory Phillips while Markell Jones is coming back for his senior year after leading the team in rushing (566 yards) for the third consecutive season. Linebacker Markus Bailey, who recorded 89 tackles and seven sacks last season, and defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal will be tasked with providing stability to a defense which returns just four starters.

The Lions used their franchise tender on the defensive end last offseason but couldn’t agree to a long-term contract, setting up the defensive end to test the free-agent market once again.

“I don’t know. It depends on the situation, honestly,” Avril told the NBC Sports Network in an interview Wednesday. “It depends on why I would be taking less money, first off. I don’t know, but we just have to get the numbers going and we’ll see. I really don’t know if I would take less right now.”

Avril, unhappy he wasn’t able to receive a long-term deal, didn’t sign his one-year, $10.6 million franchise tender until a week after training camp began last season.

He put his chances of remaining with the Lions at 50-50.

“I don’t know right now. We’re waiting to see what’s going to go down. We have a little less than a month to try to figure some things out. Hopefully, we get it done,” he said in the interview.

Avril, who will turn 27 on April 8, finished last season with 9.5 sacks, 35 tackles and two forced fumbles.

He has 39.5 career sacks and 16 forced fumbles since 2008 when Detroit drafted him out of Purdue in the third round.
