Coach Sean McDermott said before practice Monday that Taylor has shown signs of improvement but remains in concussion protocol.

Taylor has been out since he was injured during the second series of a 13-9 preseason loss at Baltimore on Aug. 26. He missed practice last week but attended Buffalo’s preseason finale against Detroit on Thursday.

Veteran third-string quarterback T.J. Yates is also in concussion protocol after he was hurt against Baltimore.

That means the Bills could turn to Peterman. The fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh has jumped ahead of Yates to become the primary backup. Peterman saw the most extensive playing time this preseason, and finished 43 of 79 for 483 yards and a touchdown.

”He is ready,” McDermott said. ”When you look at what he’s done throughout the preseason, I’m confident, and we’re extremely confident in Nathan. I expect that he’s only going to continue to get better.”

The Bills signed quarterback Joe Webb for insurance in case Taylor or Yates can’t play. Webb has been in the NFL seven seasons and spent the past three with Carolina, where he also played on special teams.

The Bills are off Tuesday and returning to practice Wednesday.

McDermott wouldn’t say when he must decide on his starter.

”We’ll cross that road when we come to it at this point,” he said. ”We feel good we’ll have clarity around the situation when we need it, and this team’s ready.”

To make roster space for Yates, Buffalo released veteran safety Colt Anderson.

Jennings, LSU safety Dwayne Thomas and defensive lineman Maqeudius Bain were arrested by LSU police in June and booked with unauthorized entry of inhabited dwelling. The players have said they sought to retrieve items that had been stolen from Jennings. Thomas also was booked with simple burglary.

The players have been suspended indefinitely, but coach Les Miles has expressed optimism they’ll be reinstated when the case is resolved.

The student’s current preference to drop the case caries weight, but Moore said he still wants to review transcripts of what the student initially told police.

”Whether (the players) broke into the apartment or not is the question. Whether they were invited in is the question,” Moore said. ”I want to know what (the student) said initially. What he’s saying now is that he never told them they weren’t invited in the room.”

The prosecutor added that the case could be resolved within a week.

”I want to be able to explain it properly, to say, `This is what I found out,’ and put it to rest,” Moore added.

Jennings started 12 of LSU’s 13 games last season, completing 49 percent of his passes for 1,611 yards and 11 scores against just seven interceptions.

Thomas played in five games last season before his season was cut short by a knee injury. He was in on 27 tackles and recovered a fumble. This season, he is expected to be a regular in the defensive backfield.

Bain, a reserve last season, appeared in 10 games and was credited with six tackles and a pass break up.

After the game, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said more tests would be needed when the team returns to St. Louis on Sunday but also indicated that he was optimistic about what those tests will yield.

“I can’t speculate but it appeared just to be a hyperextension of the same knee,” Fisher said. “He’s walking around fine inside right now. That’s all I can tell you.”

A league source told us that initial tests did not show any damage to Bradford’s surgically repaired left ACL, adding that the Rams “dodged a bullet.”

Bradford will undergo an MRI no later than Sunday, Fisher confirmed Saturday night.

Bradford took what appeared to be a light hit from Cleveland’s Armonty Bryant as he threw incomplete to tight end Jared Cook. Bradford shrugged Bryant off, but the defensive lineman made contact with the quarterback’s left knee.

Bradford fell to the ground in pain as Rams doctors and trainers rushed to his side. He limped off the field under his own power but favoring the left leg as he went to the locker room for further examination.

Seven plays earlier, Bradford escaped pressure from Cleveland linebacker Barkevious Mingo but took another hit on the knee from Browns linebacker Paul Kruger.

Bradford was making his second start of the preseason after returning from a season-ending torn left ACL suffered against Carolina on Oct. 20, 2013. Bradford went 4 of 9 for 77 yards before leaving.

Veteran Shaun Hill replaced Bradford, going 2 of 6 for 45 yards.

St. Louis lost two other players in the opening quarter as defensive tackle Kendall Langford and guard Rodger Saffold went out with ankle injuries.

Two more Rams were injured on the same play in the second quarter. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson suffered a knee injury and defensive tackle Michael Brockers tweaked his ankle. Johnson’s injury appeared to be the most serious. He was taken off the field on a cart, and several teammates wished him well before he was driven away.

Fisher said those four players would also need further examination before anything more can be determined.

“We’ll be busy in the morning diagnosing,” Fisher said. “The extent to what the injuries are, I can’t make any predictions as to whether anybody should be back for Miami, Minnesota, what have you.”
