San Jose State coach Brent Brennan and Ball State coach Mike Neu have never coached against each other because they have primarily operated in two different regions of the country throughout their coaching careers.

They have achieved similar success, however, with programs that will take part in the Arizona Bowl on New Year’s Eve at Tucson.

“I’ve been following him since he took over there,” Brennan said of Neu, who was hired by Ball State, his alma mater, in 2016. “And there’s a really similar path to ours. I think this is a really fascinating matchup, if you look to where he was in 2017 and ’18. There’s some real similarities there. What they’ve been able to do this year has been awesome.”

The 22nd-ranked Spartans (7-0) were 3-22 in Brennan’s first two seasons in 2017 and 2018. After going 5-7 last season, his team is unbeaten and Mountain West champions for the first time in program history.

Brennan is becoming a noted coaching candidate, specifically at Arizona, where he was a graduate assistant in 2000. He is also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson national coach of the year award.

Neu did not have more than four wins his first three seasons, but last year, the Cardinals went 5-7 and they are 6-1 this season with a Mid-American Conference title for the first time since 1996.

“(Playing in the Arizona Bowl) is a tremendous opportunity for our program,” Neu said. “A lot of hard work has to be done between now and then facing a great opponent in San Jose State. We’re really looking forward to it. A lot a lot of good preparation lies ahead here for the next several days before we get a chance to leave.”

Neu said that preparation includes becoming hydrated to better handle Tucson’s warmer weather than Muncie, Ind., this time of year. The last time Boise State has traveled this far west was in 1993 to play in the Las Vegas Bowl — when Neu was the starting quarterback.

“The first thing when we found out (when the bowl matchup was announced) we saw that it was 76 degrees in Tucson,” Neu said from Muncie, where the high was 44 with precipitation. “The first thing we have to communicate with our young men is hydration. That starts now.”

San Jose State features quarterback Nick Starkel, who completed 32 of 52 passes for 453 yards and three touchdowns in the Mountain West title win over Boise State. He broke former Fresno State star Derek Carr’s championship record of 404 yards passing set in 2013 in win against Utah State.

“Nick has put up a huge year,” said Neu, who was a quarterback coach with the New Orleans Saints before his hire at Ball State. “We’ll have a lot of tape here to study and put a great game plan together and go take on that challenge.”

Ball State quarterback Drew Plitt has also had a productive season passing for 1,937 yards while completing 152 out of 232 pass attempts in only seven games. He has 16 touchdown passes and six interceptions.

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert has seen limited action in the team’s first two lopsided wins and figures to have another short night Saturday when the 23rd-ranked Ducks host San Jose State. Herbert has tossed nine touchdown passes for Oregon, which ranks fourth nationally in scoring at 60 points per game after rolling to victories over Bowling Green (58-24) and FCS-member Portland State (62-14).

A Heisman Trophy candidate who has thrown a touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games, Herbert played just nine drives in last Saturday’s win over Portland State, completing 20 of his 26 passes for 250 yards and four scores. A total of 11 different Ducks have rushed for or caught a touchdown – including sophomore wideout Jaylon Redd, who is tied for the Pac-12 lead with three touchdown receptions. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said his team won’t be guilty of overconfidence against San Jose State, which opened with a demoralizing 44-38 loss to UC Davis before falling 31-0 at Washington State. “The approach we have is, stay humble, stay hungry, attack every single opportunity that we have created ourselves,” he told reporters. “We have created great opportunities for ourselves because of the way we are playing.”

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (0-2): Sophomore quarterback Montel Aaron competed 13-of-25 passes for 94 yards against Washington State, but the Spartans were held to 109 total yards and fell to 45-153 all-time against Pac-12 opponents. Linebackers Kyle Harmon and Jesse Osuna and cornerback Nehemiah Shelton each recorded interceptions for the Spartans, who were picked to finish last in the West Division of the Mountain West preseason poll and rank 124th nationally in team defense. Bryce Crawford punted 11 times for a 43.7 yard average last week and also serves as the team’s placekicker.

ABOUT OREGON (2-0): Tony Brooks-James ran for 107 yards and two scores while freshman CJ Verdell ran for 106 yards and another touchdown in last Saturday’s win over Portland State, which allowed 562 yards while gaining 224. Oregon, which begins conference play at home against Stanford next week, has committed a total of eight penalties for 90 yards in two games and enters Saturday’s contest with no major injuries. Senior Jalen Jelks leads the defense in tackles with 15, two more than fellow linebackers Troy Dye and Kaulana Apelu.

Last week’s season opener got off to a sluggish start for Washington State, but the Cougars and new starting quarterback Gardner Minshew found their rhythm in the second half, outscoring host Wyoming 28-3 over the final 30 minutes en route to a 41-19 win. Washington State will be trying to maintain that momentum Saturday night in its home opener against San Jose State.

Minshew, a graduate transfer from East Carolina, finished 38-of-57 for 319 yards and three touchdowns Saturday and directed TD drives on four of the Cougars’ five second-half possessions. Washington State only converted 3-of-14 third-down attempts in the contest, but was 3-of-4 on fourth down and overcame a pair of turnovers. “The receivers caught the ball really well in the second half, and I just started throwing the ball better,” Minshew said afterward. “I was making better decisions.” San Jose State, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from last season’s 2-11 finish – the program’s low point in the last seven seasons – but 2018 is off to a rough start with a 44-38 home loss to FCS foe UC Davis on Aug. 30.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (0-1): Three quarterbacks played for the Spartans in the opener, and it was the third QB to enter the game, sophomore Montel Aaron, who was by far the most effective, completing 13-of-19 attempts for 254 yards and two TDs in relief of starter Josh Love (14-of-29, 109 yards, one TD, one interception) and Michael Carrillo (1-of-4, 2 yards, one pick). Second-year coach Brent Brennan hasn’t announced who will start Saturday, but Aaron is the obvious odds-on favorite. Defensively, San Jose State surrendered 589 yards to UC Davis, including 446 through the air, and was hurt by three turnovers and 12 penalties for 125 yards.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (1-0): The Cougars cleared a hurdle Saturday as they notched their first season-opening road win since 2004, ending a streak of seven straight losses, and now are back home where they went 7-0 last season, including wins over nationally-ranked USC and Stanford. Nine players caught passes against Wyoming, led by running back James Williams who had a game-high 10 receptions for 53 yards and a TD while pacing the team with 82 rushing yards and a TD on 16 carries. Defensively, the Cougars allowed only 206 total yards, including 67 through the air, and were led by linebacker Dominick Silvels, who recorded six total tackles, including two for losses.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Washington State leads the series 7-4-1, but the two teams have not met since a Ryan Leaf-led 52-16 home win for the Cougars in 1996.

2. San Jose State was 0-7 on the road last season, losing by an average score of 47-15.
