Both coaches are expecting an enthusiastic turnout Saturday when No. 21 Miami (1-1) takes on unranked Toledo (1-0) Saturday in the Rockets’ Glass Bowl home.

“It’ll be wild,” Miami’s Mark Richt said. “We’ll get everything they’ve got. I’m sure they’ll have every single seat sold and they’ll be standing room only.

“Their fans are going to be ready for a great battle. They’ve been excited about this for a while.”

Toledo’s Jason Candle echoed that sentiment.

“I think everybody wanted to play this game on June 1,” Candle said. “If you ask the casual fan, I don’t think anybody even remembered we had a game before them.”

A crowd of 24,136 nearly filled the 26,038 capacity Glass Bowl for the Rockets’ 66-3 rout of VMI in the opener on Sept. 1. The fans and coaches have had extra time to get ready for this one after having a bye this past weekend.

“Let’s face it,” Richt said. “They played a game, had an open date, so the fans had time to get ready for two weeks. The coaches had time to get ready for two weeks, and the whole offseason.

“We really don’t know, for sure, what we’ll get. The only thing we do know is, historically, they don’t try to make up a whole bunch of stuff. They just line up and win. They just line up and execute.”

“The game’s not just another game,” Candle said. “Any time you hear that I think that’s coach speak. Your preparation has to be that it’s just another game and what the details of that looks like. We’re not going to sacrifice who we are Monday through Friday whether we’re playing the Dallas Cowboys or Ottawa Hill High School.

“But on game day, yeah, you’re going to have to make sure that you’re sound and you know exactly what you are doing.”

Toledo gave the Hurricanes all they could handle in last year’s meeting in Miami.

The Rockets led 16-10 at the half, and after falling behind 38-16 early in the fourth quarter, they got back to within 38-30 with just less than eight minutes left before the Hurricanes added two touchdowns for the 52-30 win.

The Rockets no longer have quarterback Logan Woodside, who passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns in that game, but Mitchell Guadagni and Eli Peters filled in nicely in the opener. They combined to go 19 of 29 for 338 passing yards against VMI.

Throw in Carter Bradley’s three completions in three attempts and the Rockets completed passes to 11 different receivers in their first game. And Diontae Johnson, who had eight receptions for 66 yards against the Hurricanes last year, had only one against VMI.

Wide receiver Desmond Phillips led the Rockets with four catches. Jon’Vea Johnson, who had five catches for 79 yards against Miami in 2017, had three receptions for 80 yards.

The Rockets ended up with 603 yards in total offense, but Candle notes it was not against a defense like Miami’s.

“Whoever made that saying up, you always get better from Week 1 to Week 2, didn’t have to play the Hurricanes in Week 2, I guess,” Candle said. “But we’re going to do our best to keep trying to get better and give it our best shot this weekend.”

Richt had the opportunity in last week’s 77-0 rout of Savannah State to play redshirt freshman N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon and true freshman Jarren Williams at quarterback, but senior Malik Rosier will get the start at Toledo.

Rosier was 8 of 12 passing against Savannah State, ending a stretch of four consecutive sub-50-percent-completion outings, all losses.

“The bottom line is we’re going to play who we think gives us the best chance of winning,” Richt said. “That’s what we’re doing, bottom line. As long as he is that, he’ll start.

“If we think someone else gives us a better chance to win, we’ll start that guy.”

Toledo Rockets vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers

Appalachian State and Toledo will meet for the first time when they clash in the Raymon Media Camellia Bowl on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., but the two coaches are not strangers.

Mountaineers coach Scott Satterfield spent a season as Toledo’s passing game coordinator before moving on Florida International and then to Appalachian State. Toledo coach Jason Candle was the Rockets wide receivers coach while Satterfield was on the Toledo staff.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Toledo and how they play the game,” Satterfield said. “Having been there in 2009, it is a similar program to what we have at Appalachian State, a blue-collar program. Their guys play hard and physical.

“Jason has done an outstanding job taking over there.”

Candle reciprocated.

“I certainly have a lot of respect for Scott and what he has been able to do with that football program,” he said. “I think it’s really cool.”

The Rockets (9-3) and Mountaineers (9-3) will kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, with ESPN airing the action.

The Rockets will be making their 16th bowl appearance overall and sixth in the last seven years, but Candle considers the postseason anything but routine.

“At Toledo, we don’t take these opportunities very lightly,” he said. “In 2013, we were 7-5 and did not get invited to a bowl game.”

There wasn’t much in the way of doubt this time around. The Rockets reached bowl eligibility with their sixth win (31-17 over Central Michigan) on Oct. 22 and added three more wins before losing to undefeated Western Michigan 55-35 in the season finale.

Junior quarterback Logan Woodside led an offensive surge by throwing an FBS-high 43 touchdown passes and setting a school record in passing yardage with 3,882, completing 69.1 percent of his attempts.

“Logan has had a tremendous season,” Candle said, citing his quarterback’s work ethic. “He’s a gym rat in the old-school sense.”

Wide receivers Corey Jones and Cody Thompson combined for 119 catches and tight end Michael Roberts had 43. Running back Kareem Hunt topped off a 1,300-yard rushing season with 200 yards against Western Michigan, his 27th career triple-digit rushing game.

Appalachian State, which beat Ohio 31-29 in last year’s Camellia Bowl, will counter Toledo’s prolific passing game with a defense that has allowed only 10 touchdown passes and ranks No. 3 nationally in interceptions with 20, five by freshman cornerback Clifton Duck.

The Mountaineers have a two-pronged rushing game with Jalin Moore leading with 1,367 yards and veteran Marcus Cox, who missed four games to injury, adding 847. Cox is the nation’s No. 2 active rusher with 4,960 yards. No. 3 is Toledo’s Hunt with 4,825.

Since his arrival at Western Michigan in December 2012, coach P.J. Fleck urged everyone associated with his program to “Row the Boat” – and the philosophy has brought the No. 14 Broncos into uncharted waters.

Western Michigan hosts Toledo on Friday (5 p.m. ET, ESPNU) in what amounts to the Mid-American Conference West Division title game. The winner advances to the MAC championship Dec. 2 at Ford Field in Detroit.

The stakes are much higher for the Broncos (11-0, 7-0), though, who are also in the driver’s seat to play in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2 and reap the rewards of the $6 million payday that comes with being the highest-ranked Group of Five conference team in the country. Western Michigan is one of two undefeated teams in the nation (No. 1 Alabama) and 11-0 for the first time in school history.

But the 35-year-old Fleck continues to keep his team focused on the next task at hand, which is to defeat Toledo (9-2, 6-1).

“I had ‘Row the Boat’ a long time ago, but I never brought it out,” Fleck told Mlive.com in 2013. “It’s very simple when you break it down. There are three parts to rowing the boat. There is the oar, which is the energy behind rowing the boat. There is boat, which is the actual sacrifice, either our team or the administration or the boosters or the audience or whoever is willing to sacrifice for this program. There is also the compass. Every single person that comes in contact with our football program, fans or not, they are all going for one common goal and that is success.

“When you literally talk about rowing the boat, you’re facing the opposite direction the bow of the boat is actually going. You’re not able to see the future. We’ve set sail and we’ve set our direction from point A to point B, whether it’s right now to win a MAC Championship, or be the first person in your family to get a college education or to beat cancer.

“We’re making it global and community-based. Everyone can relate to this. The boat is set in a direction and we’re rowing. We can’t see the future but we can see our past. Our past is the program. It’s the people. That’s what we’re looking at and we’re learning as we go. We don’t know if there’s a waterfall ahead of us, rocks, smooth seas or sunsets. We have no idea. We just have to keep rowing.”

The Broncos’ magical run continued with a 38-0 victory over Buffalo on Saturday, extending a school-record 13-game winning streak that began with a 35-30 victory over Toledo to end the 2015 regular season.

Since Western Michigan’s previous game was 11 days earlier (a 37-21 victory at Kent State on Nov. 8) and with a short week further abbreviated by Thanksgiving, Fleck and his coaching staff had the luxury of using a couple days to start preparing for the Rockets.

“When you start (preparations) and are ahead of time, you only do that as a coaching staff,” Fleck told Mlive.com. “That really never gets to our players. We’ve never brought up anything about Toledo in weeks past.”

The Broncos boast the MAC’s top scoring offense (43.8 points per game) and defense (17.7) with the Rockets second in both categories at 39.2 and 22.5. The teams own the top two total offenses in the conference with Toledo also possessing the top passing offense (338.2 yards) and Western Michigan averaging a MAC-best 247.1 yards on the ground.

Western Michigan’s plus-15 turnover margin is tied for the best nationally with No. 6 Washington and Old Dominion, and it all starts with quarterback Zach Terrell. The senior completes 71.3 percent of his passes with 27 touchdowns and one interception.

Terrell passed for a career-high 445 yards and four touchdowns against Buffalo, drawing incredibly high praise from Fleck: “Zach Terrell is the finest football player and finest man I’ve ever met in my entire life.”

Broncos wide receiver Corey Davis is on the verge of becoming the career FBS receiving yards leader after recording 173 on 13 catches with two touchdowns Saturday. Davis, who already has the most receptions (310) and receiving TDs (49) in MAC history, is 19 yards shy of breaking the FBS record of 5,005 yards set by Nevada’s Trevor Insley in 1999.

Davis’s 16 touchdowns share the national lead with Louisiana Tech’s Carlos Henderson.

Western Michigan also features junior running back Jarvion Franklin, who boasts a MAC-best 1,228 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Rockets, who reached nine victories for the third consecutive season with a 37-19 win over Ball State on Nov. 16, have a few weapons of their own.

Quarterback Logan Woodside leads the country with 40 touchdowns against only seven interceptions while completing 70.1 percent of his passes. His 3,653 yards rank fourth nationally.

Woodside’s targets include wide receivers Cody Thompson (20.1 yards per team-best 56 catches, 10 touchdowns) and Jon’Vea Johnson (19.8, 38, 10). Tight end Michael Roberts has a team-best 12 TDs.

Toledo is far from one-dimensional as running back Kareem Hunt’s 1,155 yards and seven scores attest.

Woodside must be on the lookout for Broncos defensive end Keion Adams (5.5 sacks, nine quarterback hurries) while Terrell hopes to avoid defensive tackle Treyvon Hester (five sacks, seven hurries) and defensive end John Stepec (4.5, 13).
