Unable to reach an agreement on a restructured contract, the Arizona Cardinals have released quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Kolb was set to make a $2 million bonus if he was still on the club’s roster Saturday. He also had a $9 million base salary for this season.

Kolb’s future in Arizona became even cloudier Wednesday when the team agreed to a three-year contract with quarterback Drew Stanton.

Thanks to injuries and his unsteady play, Kolb appeared in just six games with the Cardinals last season, throwing for 1,169 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

Kolb, 28, threw for 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in two seasons with Arizona after being acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a 2007 second-round pick of the Eagles.

Star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, in an interview with ESPN Radio’s “SVP and Russillo” show Thursday, said he has confidence that new coach Bruce Arians would improve the team’s quarterback situation.

The Cardinals, whose offense ranked dead last in the NFL last season, also have tendered an offer to quarterback Brian Hoyer.

After much thought, the NHL Players’ Association has given a thumbs-up to the league’s proposed realignment plan.

“After discussions with the Executive Board, the NHLPA has given consent to realignment, to be re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season,” NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said in a statement Thursday night.

Both sides confirmed to ESPN.com that the NHLPA gave its consent to play in the proposed four-division system for three seasons — through the 2015-16 season — but the union will begin to re-evaluate the system after two seasons. Therefore, no changes would be made to the system before the 2016-17 season.

All that remains now is for the NHL’s 30 owners to vote on the plan in order for it to go into effect for the 2013-14 season. A source told ESPN.com on Thursday evening that the NHL hopes to hold the board of governors vote within the next week.

“The NHL Players’ Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised plan for realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. “Our next step will be to bring the proposed Plan for Realignment to the NHL Board of Governors for its consideration. We will update the status of the process as future developments warrant.”

The NHL sent details of its realignment plan to owners Feb. 26 after discussing it for more than three weeks with the NHLPA.

The league had hoped to get consent last week, but had to wait because the NHLPA needed more time to get feedback from its membership. All 30 team player reps held calls or had face-to-face meetings with union officials to discuss the realignment plan, and some players had reservations about unbalanced conferences, a source told ESPN.com.

The NHL’s realignment plan calls for 16 teams in the Eastern Conference next season. Columbus and Detroit would move there from the Western Conference, which would be left with 14 teams. The plan also calls for the league to go from its current six-division format to four.

The realignment plan also introduces wild-card playoff spots within the conferences.

Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, the top player on Mel Kiper’s Big Board, will not work out at this week’s NFL scouting combine and will instead focus on his pro day in Athens, Ga., in March, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Jones’ decision means that the draft’s projected top linebacker and top running back, as well as one of the top quarterbacks and one of the top wide receivers, are not planning to work out at this week’s combine.

A two-time All-American at Georgia, Jones is one of 32 SEC underclassmen making the jump to the NFL this year. He is one of six underclassmen ranked among the top 10 prospects on Kiper’s latest Big Board.

During the 2012 season, Jones led the nation in sacks (14.5) and tackles for a loss (24.5), both Georgia records. In two seasons at Georgia, the USC transfer recorded 28 sacks and 44 tackles for a loss in 26 games.

The Anaheim Ducks signed Viktor Fasth to a two-year, $5.8 million contract extension on Wednesday, rewarding the Swedish goalie for his 8-0-0 start to his first NHL season.

Fasth earned a new contract after just nine unbeaten appearances with the Pacific Division-leading Ducks, who have the NHL’s second-best record at 12-2-1. He’ll make $2.4 million next season and $3.4 million in 2014-15.

“You always try to do your best and play your best, try to help the team as much as you can,” Fasth said in a phone interview. “That’s what I’ve been trying to focus on, and that’s what I have to keep doing, to do my part.”

The Ducks signed the 30-year-old Fasth to be Jonas Hiller’s backup last summer after a stellar pro career in his native Sweden, outbidding other NHL teams with a $1 million, one-year contract.

With Hiller slowed by a lower-body injury, Fasth has been largely outstanding in his place, making nine appearances with a 1.78 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage while tying for the league lead in victories.

“It feels great,” Fasth told ESPN.com. “I really like it here — the organization and the team and everything — so it feels great.”

Fasth is just the third goalie in NHL history to win his first eight decisions, joining Ray Emery and Bob Froese. He’s one win away from matching Emery’s record 9-0-0 start to his career with Ottawa.

He’s also playing a major role in the outstanding start by the Ducks, who have missed the playoffs in two of the last three years. Anaheim, currently on a five-day break between games, has won five straight while rising to second place in the Western Conference behind Chicago.

“Viktor has proven himself not only this year in the NHL, but the previous two seasons as the top goaltender in Sweden,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. “We are pleased to be able to keep him and feel fortunate to have two top NHL goaltenders going forward.”

Anaheim relied heavily last season on Hiller, who set a club record with an NHL-high 73 starts. The Ducks were determined not to wear down their former All-Star from Switzerland, and Fasth has provided coach Bruce Boudreau with two outstanding options.

Fasth won a shootout against Nashville in his NHL debut on Jan. 26, and he posted his first shutout at Colorado on Feb. 6.

Hiller outplayed longtime Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to claim the Anaheim starting job during the 2008-09 season, but Hiller hasn’t lost his own starting job to Fasth quite yet. Hiller made 25 saves against Columbus on Monday night for his first victory in 18 days.

When asked if he considered himself the Ducks’ starter, Fasth replied: “No, I don’t.”

“Jonas played against Columbus and played incredibly good,” he added. “I just try to work hard, and I’ll play when the coach tells me to play. That’s how things work.”

Hiller is under contract through 2013-14, making $4.5 million this season and again next year.

Fasth has thoroughly impressed the Ducks with his smooth positional play and exceptional stick work, but the veteran netminder was expected to be a solid NHL player. He was named the Swedish Elite League’s top goaltender in each of the past two seasons with AIK Stockholm, the first goalie to win back-to-back Honken Trophies since New York Rangers star Henrik Lundqvist.

Fasth also played at the 2011 world championships in Slovakia, backstopping Sweden to silver medals while winning the tournament MVP award and raising his profile among international hockey watchers.

“The national team is a window for every player to get the ice under you,” Fasth said. “The Swedish Elite League, I don’t know if there’s many scouts watching that, but of course it helps to play for the national team and play good there.”

Jerry Buss’ children intend on carrying out their father’s succession plan for the Los Angeles Lakers following the iconic owner’s death Monday.

The plan, which was put in place years ago by Buss, calls for his daughter, Jeanie, to become the Lakers’ governor and represent the team at the NBA board of governors meetings. She will also handle the business operations of the team.

Buss’ son, Jim, will handle basketball operations of the team.

“The future of the organization will remain unchanged,” Lakers spokesman John Black said Monday. “Dr. Buss set it up years in advance — he planned for the team to remain with the family.

“For the past several years, Jim Buss has been running the basketball operations and working in conjunction with our general manager, Mitch Kupchak, and that will continue. Jeanie Buss has been running the business operations for 15 years, and that will continue. As far as the operation and running of the team, that will be unchanged.”

Black and Buss family spokesman Bob Steiner also said Monday that the Buss family and the six children that now own the team have no plans on selling the Lakers.

“The family has no interest in ever selling the team,” Black said. “The six of them agreed unanimously to keep the team in the family for generations to come.”

Buss’ controlling ownership of the team is now owned by a trust for the benefit of the six children, Black said, and the trust will be managed by Jeanie, Johnny and Jim Buss.

“The entity can’t be split,” Steiner said. “The heirs do not own the team individually. It is a collective.”

Buss had not attended a Lakers game over the last two seasons as he had been in and out of the hospital for the past 18 months. The last game he attended was the Lakers’ second-round series loss to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

“He was more and more giving responsibility to Jeanie and Jimmy in preparation for a complete passing of the torch, but major decisions were still his,” Steiner said. “They are their father’s children, and they knew and believed in the path that he had set and how he wanted things run and they were very well-trained in that. Jerry would not have ceded responsibility unless he was confident.”

Steiner said the family appreciated the media not reporting on Buss’ cancer and condition until it finally broke online last week.

“The family appreciates the media not going public with Jerry’s medical condition and respecting his privacy,” Steiner said. “When the story finally broke, Jerry was not cognizant of it.”

There are plans to honor Buss before Wednesday’s game against the Boston Celtics. The team also is planning a separate memorial service, possibly held at the Nokia Theatre across the street from Staples Center, this week or next week.

Buss continued to watch every Lakers game prior to his death. Steiner said Buss would often watch games with Jim, Jeanie, Joey and Jessie at his bedside.

Buss also was visited in the hospital by Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Dwight Howard among the Lakers’ current players and former players such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar last year. Buss, however, spent his final days with family members and loved ones.

“The family is doing fine,” Steiner said. “It’s a testament to his determination and will that he lasted this long. The family certainly knew for a while that his passing was imminent, so they’ve had a lot of time to get as used to it as you possibly can.”

The Calgary Flames signed goaltender Danny Taylor to a one-year, two-way contract a day after Miikka Kiprusoff suffered a lower-body injury in a 4-1 win over Detroit.

Kiprusoff, who left Tuesday’s game after the second period, is listed as day to day.

“In the second period I felt some discomfort in the lower body area,” Kiprusoff said in a statement. “During the intermission, it was decided that I not return to play. I really believe that this is a short-term injury and over the next days, I’ll work toward being ready as soon as possible.”

Backup Leland Irving stopped all six shots he faced in the third period against the Red Wings. Calgary (2-3-2) is last in the Western Conference with six points entering Wednesday.

Kiprusoff, who has played in all seven games this season, has a .870 save percentage and 3.24 goals-against average. He has played in more than 70 games in each of the past seven seasons for the Flames.

Taylor’s deal is worth $525,000. He has spent the past two seasons with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat.

The St. Louis Blues agreed to terms with defenseman Wade Redden on Friday on a one-year, $800,000 deal.

The 35-year-old Redden was placed on waivers this week by the New York Rangers, who bought out the final two years of his contract on Thursday.

Also on Friday, the Blues released 35-year-old defenseman Colin White, who was brought in for a tryout earlier this week. White is three games shy of 800 over 12 NHL seasons. He played in 54 games for the San Jose Sharks last season after 11 seasons with the New Jersey Devils.

Redden, who spent the past two seasons with Connecticut of the AHL, had five goals and 35 assists in 156 regular-season games with the Rangers over two seasons after he signed a six-year, $39 million deal to leave Ottawa.

Under the new labor deal, Redden will earn a pro-rated $3.341 million this season plus two-thirds of the $5 million he was set to earn next season. In 994 career NHL games over 13 years, Redden has 106 goals and 344 assists.

“Wade is a solid two-way defenseman,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said Friday. “We believe his experience will complement and add stability to our defensive core.”

Redden is scheduled for a physical on Sunday, a day after the Blues open the season at home against the Detroit Red Wings. He was the second overall pick by the New York Islanders in 1995.

Coach Lane Kiffin is still hopeful that his star player, sophomore receiver Marqise Lee, will play in Monday’s season-ending Hyundai Sun Bowl for the Trojans.

But he’s not sure yet. Kiffin said Sunday at his final pregame news conference that Lee’s status for the bowl is unknown and could depend on how he rebounds from Sunday afternoon’s final walk-through.

Lee, the 2012 Biletnikoff Award winner, went down holding his left knee early in Saturday’s practice and then sat out of the rest of the session, according to multiple reports. Later Saturday, at a bowl game dinner, he appeared to be fine, walking without restraint.

Lee has played in all of USC’s 24 games in his first two seasons with the Trojans, playing through minor nagging injuries many times.

USC’s Sunday walk-through, held at the Sun Bowl, was the final on-field activity for the Trojans before Monday’s 11 a.m. PT game.

Kiffin said the status of senior running back Curtis McNeal for Monday’s game is also up in the air. McNeal has missed multiple bowl practices with an undisclosed injury.

USC receiver Robert Woods told reporters he’ll announce whether he plans to leave for the NFL immediately following Monday’s game. Woods, a 20-year-old junior, reportedly received a second-round grade from the NFL on his evaluation.
