With the nation embroiled in social turmoil and economic upheaval, merchandise with the Washington nickname. For good measure, that would be more in tune with the current times rather than, say, the 1800s.

So, while what it calls a “thorough review” that almost will surely lead to a replacement by 2021 at the latest, let’s explore a few possibilities:

GENERALS – This would be a nod to who spent decades serving as the Harlem Globetrotters’ nightly pushovers, compiling a record of one win and somewhere north of 16,000 losses before they went out of business in 2015. Washington’s NFL team hasn’t been quite that bad in recent years, but it did go 3-13 a year ago and last won a playoff game in 2005. If Generals doesn’t work out, how about the Federals? They were during the 1980s, going 7-29 over two seasons in the ill-fated spring football league. A seamless transition, that would be.

GRIDLOCK – The District of Columbia has some of the in the nation, so this would seem fitting to all those commuters who’ve been spent roughly the time it takes to play an NFL game just trying to get to work. Also, it sums up our current political climate.

BLAZE – During the War of 1812, the to numerous government buildings including the White House and the Capitol. Not necessarily a proud moment in the nation’s history, but probably a notch above Dan Snyder’s embarrassing tenure as team owner.

BUREAUCRATS – The team could pay tribute to all those nameless workers who keep the wheels of government droning along through turbulent times. They’ve certainly shown more imagination than some of Washington’s offensive schemes over the past couple of decades.

FOGGY BOTTOM BOYS – Foggy Bottom is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, which would give Washington’s NFL team a chance to play off the fictional band created for the Coen Brothers’ classic movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” were fronted by a lip-syncing George Clooney, who hopefully could be persuaded to cut a video for the team’s new right song, “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow.” It’s a catchier tune (and certainly more appropriate for the long-suffering fan base) than the hokey “Hail to the ….”

BLOSSOMS – While perhaps lacking the machismo of other potential monikers, for roughly as long as the hopes of a Washington NFL fan each season. About two weeks.

SENATORS – was so horrible most years that its derisive motto became, “First in war, first in peace, last in the American League.” Hmm, that sounds familiar. Other names that were once used by pro sports franchises in the district include the Diplomats (a long-forgotten soccer team from the 1970s) and the Ambassadors (a team that never got off the ground in the World Football League). But forget about the Bullets, the NBA Wizards’ former name. That one was dropped because of its association with gun violence. It ain’t coming back.

HOGS – This name hearkens back to the team’s most glorious era, when a group of down-and-dirty behemoths dominated the offensive line of scrimmage and bullied Washington to three Super Bowl titles under Joe Gibbs. This might be the best way to appease those fans who are sure to object to changing the offensive moniker.

MONUMENTS – C’mon, how can you not like the Washington Monuments! A worthy tribute to the city’s stunning array of marble and granite remembrances, which honor everyone from to Martin Luther King Jr. to the veterans of the Vietnam War. Some great logo possibilities, for sure.

RED TAILS — This is our pick. It maintains a link to the team’s current abomination of a name but also salutes the famed Tuskegee Airmen, the group of who broke down racial stereotypes during World War II.

Finally, Washington’s NFL team would have a name everyone could cheer with pride.

Native American advocacy groups have tried for decades to force a change, and a peer-reviewed UC Berkeley study released earlier this year revealed 67% of those surveyed who strongly identify as Native agreed or strongly agreed the name was offensive. The death of George Floyd in Minnesota and other examples of police brutality against Black people in the U.S. sparked protests worldwide and changes to various brands considered racially insensitive.

Asked last month about the name, a spokesman said the team had no comment. But this week marked a possible sea change on the issue with investors writing to FedEx, PepsiCo and other sponsors hoping they would influence change.

PepsiCo, a sponsor since 2017, expressed a similar sentiment and said, “We believe it is time for a change.” Sponsor Bank of America said it has “encouraged the team to change the name” and welcomed the organization’s review.

Coach Ron Rivera, who said in a recent radio interview now is not the time to discuss the name, called it “an issue of personal importance.” Rivera, who is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent and is the only Hispanic head coach currently in the NFL, added he’d work closely with Snyder during the process.

“There is no reason not to immediately announce that the team is changing the mascot, since any real review will lead to the inevitable conclusion that the deeply offensive and racist name of Washington’s NFL team must go now,” said Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, leader of the “Change the Mascot” campaign. “Dan Snyder can stand on the right side of history and create a new, positive legacy for his team, or instead continue embracing a bigoted slur that denigrates Native Americans and people of color.”

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said recently the name was an “obstacle” to the team building a stadium in the District. The current lease at FedEx Field expires in 2027, and the old RFK Stadium site in Washington is one of several options for the team’s new headquarters, along with locations in Maryland and Virginia.

The telecasts on the regional cable network NBC Sports Washington will follow a formula established by the Redskins’ NBA neighbors, the Washington Wizards. The Wizards, however, offered the free-to-play contests during the regular season, while the Redskins will have them only during the four preseason games, when NBC Sports Washington has TV rights.

The network will continue to offer a traditional telecast on its main channel, while the gambling-focused telecast will air simultaneously on its secondary channel, NBC Sports Washington Plus. The Wizards offered the alternate telecast on eight games this season, and they saw increased ratings and fan engagement, said Damon Phillips, the network’s general manager.

Starting the interactive telecasts now allows the network to be ready when legal online or mobile sports betting becomes available in its viewing area, Phillips said. The network in theory could accept real-time wagers on proposition bets offered during the telecast if it partnered with a sportsbook.

”Down the road there are a number of possibilities,” Phillips said. ”Who knows where the different regulatory entities are going to end up on sports betting, and we just want to make sure we’re ready to be able to respond to it.”

For now, the games are free to play and the network will give away $1,000 in cash to one winner per quarter of each game.

”We think this is the way of the future. There’s going to be a gamification of television broadcasts, and this is one of the first examples of it,” Phillips said.

The District of Columbia Council legalized sports betting in Washington this year, although the regulations have not been finalized and no sportsbooks have opened. Bills have been introduced to legalize sports betting in Virginia and Maryland, which would require voters in those states to approve it in a referendum.

Delaware and West Virginia, which are in the NBC Sports Washington viewing area, are among the 10 states that already have legal sportsbooks. Neither state currently has online or mobile betting, however.

The NFL has historically been opposed to gambling on its games, although it publishes injury reports that sportsbooks use to adjust point spreads, and it has embraced daily fantasy sports, in which fans wager on the performances of individual players rather than the outcome of a game. The NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball have been more eager to embrace sports betting in states where it is legal, and they have created business partnerships with sportsbook operators. Caesars Entertainment became the NFL’s first casino sponsor this year, but the deal does not include sports betting or fantasy football.

Jessie Johnson, a Redskins spokeswoman, said the league was aware of the planned telecasts and raised no objection.

When it comes to the NFC playoff picture, the Washington Redskins are on the outside looking in with two weeks to play.

A win against the Chicago Bears on Saturday might not cure everything, but it certainly would help.

The Redskins (7-6-1) will wrap up their road schedule when they visit the Bears (3-11) for a Christmas Eve matinee. Washington has lost three of its past four games to slip a half-game behind Green Bay and Tampa Bay in the wild-card race, and a loss this weekend could wreck the team’s chances of earning a second straight trip to the postseason.

If the Redskins prevail over the Bears, they will have to do it on short rest. Coach Jay Gruden’s team is coming off a 26-15 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

“As far as mental preparation, this late in the year, we should be able to put a game plan together,” Gruden told reporters during a conference call this week. “The physical part of it is what concerns me. These big guys, they take a beating on a Sunday or a Monday night football game. You need your rest. You need to recover. That’s the biggest issue I have is the recovery time going from a Monday night to a Saturday.”

The Bears have the benefit of an extra day’s rest, but on paper they have few other advantages as a lost season winds down. Chicago has lost two straight games and five of its past six to guarantee a third consecutive sub-.500 showing.

That said, a last-minute loss to the Packers last week indicated that the Bears are not ready to roll over to playoff contenders.

“Our guys keep believing,” said Bears quarterback Matt Barkley, who will make his fifth start in place of injured teammates Jay Cutler and Brian Hoyer. “They never count themselves out. (It’s important) just to keep that positive attitude in the huddle and keep that positive attitude on the sideline to know that we’re still in it.”

Washington has won six straight games against the Bears, which is its longest active streak against any opponent. The Redskins will try to make it seven wins in a row over Chicago with a high-powered offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is second in the NFL with 4,360 passing yards to go along with 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Cousins has spread the ball effectively this season, which will make it difficult for the Bears to target a single playmaker with their 3-4 defensive scheme. Washington is the only team in the league this season to have six players with at least 40 receptions. The group is led by wide receivers DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jamison Crowder, all of whom have eclipsed 800 receiving yards and have the 1,000-yard milestone within their sights.

Redskins tight end Jordan Reed has dominated the Bears with 18 catches for 254 yards and two touchdowns in two meetings. However, a shoulder injury has limited Reed in recent weeks, and he was ejected Monday night for throwing a punch at Panthers safety Kurt Coleman.

“I think he’s frustrated,” Gruden said. “He obviously has the makings and all the tools to be one of the best tight ends in the league, it’s just that we’ve got to get him healthy. Hopefully with another week of rest and rehab, he’ll be stronger for Chicago.”

The Bears lack the same number of playmakers, but Pro Bowl wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will look to build more chemistry with Barkley in his second week back from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Jeffery leads the team with 46 catches for 719 yards and two touchdowns.

Rookie running back Jordan Howard could challenge the Redskins’ defense, which is ranked No. 29 in the league with an average of 375.4 yards allowed per game. Howard has rushed for 1,059 yards and six touchdowns this season, and he has a legitimate chance to make franchise history by breaking Matt Forte’s rookie record of 1,258 rushing yards in 2008.

On defense, Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan is fifth in the NFL with 11 sacks but is coping with an elbow sprain. Kerrigan and his teammates have allowed their fair share of yards this season, but they have compensated by forcing 15 fumbles, which is good for third in the league.

Chicago will counter on defense with an above-average pass rush that features three players with at least seven sacks. The group includes Willie Young (7.5 sacks), Akeem Hicks (7 sacks) and top draft choice Leonard Floyd (7 sacks).

The Bears also will welcome back inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman. The team’s top tackler missed the last four games because of a suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Bears coach John Fox said he was eager to see his players compete as the seasons draws toward a close.

“I’m not going to be all bubbly about sitting here at 3-11,” Fox said. “I think we’ll be positioned to help ourselves pretty well moving forward, but we still have two games in the season, and we’re still trying to evaluate and see who that nucleus will be.”

The matchup Monday night between the Carolina Panthers and host Washington Redskins has playoff implications with three games to go in the regular season.

Yet there’s another topic that naturally has been making the rounds leading up to the game in Landover, Md. (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

That’s the role of Redskins cornerback Josh Norman, who played with the Panthers and was the focal point of the secondary until he wasn’t retained in the spring.

Now Norman goes against his former team. At least the Panthers don’t expect any surprises from the often-flamboyant and talkative defensive back.

“I think the guys know what to expect from Josh,” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. “That’s the beauty of it.”

The Redskins don’t want Norman or anything else to be a distraction because it’s a critical time for them as they try to stay in line for an NFC wild card spot. Close games have become part of the process for Washington (7-5-1).

“With the parity in the NFL, we keep grinding it out and it’s what we expect,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said.

The Panthers have been complimentary of Norman, noting that he became a high-level player with them the past couple of years.

“He listened and he learned and he grew,” Rivera said of Norman said. “Those long arms of his come into play. … The way he practiced improved the level of play around him. He brought a swagger to us. Guys feed off of that and that’s what happened.”

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton said he can’t become consumed with Norman’s actions.

“It’s not a game about him vs. us,” Newton said. “We just need to win this game.”

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins consulted with Norman months ago about some of what to expect from Carolina’s defense.

“It really goes back to the spring,” Cousins said. “We talked some about the coverages and stuff, but at the end of the day it’s about executing.”

Cousins was in the same pre-draft training group a few years ago with Norman, so they had a connection prior to become teammates.

“What I’ve always loved about him is that he’s a worker,” Cousins said. “Winning matters to him. He has been a part of a winning team. He knows what that looks like.”

Cousins looks like a different quarterback at times as he continues to develop and might be directing a playoff-bound team.

“I see him building his confidence,” Rivera said. “I see him making good decisions. I see why they like who he is. To me, it all starts with Kirk Cousins. He has really come along. … They’ve got play makers and that’s what you have to be aware of.”

Carolina ripped the Redskins in a 44-16 home victory last season. That included the defense forcing five turnovers.

“Hopefully, we don’t turn it over five times,” Cousins said. “You’d like to think we’re a more mature team … and you protect the ball better.”

Cousins said there are lots of similarities with the Panthers defense to what the Redskins had to face a year ago.

“I remember Carolina being one of the better defenses we played all year,” Cousins said. “A lot of the same players are back. I do think their defense is still very good and smart players.”

With Norman now on the opposing team, the Redskins have been keen on praising the Panthers secondary this week. That includes rookie cornerbacks James Bradberry and Daryl Worley.

“It’s hard to come into this league and play right away,” Cousins said of Carolina’s rookie cornerbacks.

Cousins has been praised for his poise and precision at times as the Redskins have hung tough in the NFC East. The offense has become more difficult to defend.

“No matter who’s on the field, we spread it around,” Cousins said. “You’re building that chemistry on knowing where guys should be.”

It’s unclear if Cousins will have to contend with Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, who has missed three games because of a concussion. He returned to practice several days before last week’s game against San Diego, but ultimately wasn’t cleared to play.

The Redskins were glad to have extra time because of the Monday night game. That might give linebackers Su’a Cravens (elbow) and Will Compton (knee sprain) time to recover from ailments, while special teams player Mack Brown entered the concussion protocol based on a hit last week against Philadelphia.

The Panthers (5-8) have to win their final three games and receive quite a bit of help to land in the playoffs. It’s a complicated path to the postseason even for a team that has won four of its last seven games.

“There is no room for error and we have to rely on certain other things happening,” Rivera said. “At the end of the day, our concern is our next game. We play the Redskins on Monday night and I believe our guys are going to prep and get ready. … Our intention is to win them all.”

Washington holds a 7-5 edge in the all-time series with the Panthers, who’ve won the past four meetings.
