PREDICTION: WASHINGTON ST , OREGON

Oddsmakers currently have the WASHINGTON ST listed as -3 point favorites versus the OREGON, while the game’s total is sitting at 69.

The two highest-scoring teams in the Pac-12 will go head-to-head Saturday afternoon when No. 23 Washington State hosts No. 11 Oregon. The Cougars average 41.8 points per game and Oregon averages 43, while also earning the distinction of being one of three teams in the nation that has scored at least 30 points in every game this season.

Both teams are led by top quarterbacks who have been able to move the ball with ease this season. Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew II threw for 430 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in a 56-37 win at Oregon State on Oct. 6, giving the graduate transfer from East Carolina 300 passing yards in every game this season – upping his nation-leading average to 403.7 yards per contest. Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert has also thrown five touchdown passes in a game this year, and owns at least one passing touchdown in 21 consecutive games – the second-longest active streak in the country. Herbert is supported by a more productive run game led by freshman running back CJ Verdell, who has three consecutive 100-yard efforts coming into this matchup.

TV: 7:30 p.m., FOX. LINE: Washington State -3

ABOUT OREGON (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12): Dillon Mitchell missed the 33-10 loss to Washington State last season because of injury and didn’t catch a pass against the Cougars as a freshman, but the junior wide receiver should be a difference maker in this contest. He has three consecutive 100-yard receiving performances coming into this game, and his 154.3 receiving yards per game in Pac-12 play is the highest average in any conference this season. The Ducks also have a dependable tight end in Jacob Breeland and two other skilled sophomore receivers in Johnny Johnson III and Jaylon Redd.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (5-1, 2-1): The Cougars have had an extra week to rest and prepare for this matchup and that should give sixth-year linebacker Peyton Pelluer an edge when it comes to reading Oregon’s plays. The game against the Ducks will be the 48th for Pelluer at Washington State, three shy of the program record. Pelluer has reached double digits in tackles the past three games and his next tackle will give him 303, moving him into the top 10 career list for the Cougars.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Ducks are the least penalized team in the Pac-12 with 32.

2. The Cougars have won three straight in the series after Oregon had won eight in a row.

3. Washington State has 12 rushing touchdowns this season after totaling eight in 2017-18.

PREDICTION: Oregon 38, Washington State 35

PREDICTION: WASHINGTON ST , SAN JOSE ST

Oddsmakers currently have the WASHINGTON ST listed as point favorites versus the SAN JOSE ST, while the game’s total is sitting at .

Last week’s season opener got off to a sluggish start for Washington State, but the Cougars and new starting quarterback Gardner Minshew found their rhythm in the second half, outscoring host Wyoming 28-3 over the final 30 minutes en route to a 41-19 win. Washington State will be trying to maintain that momentum Saturday night in its home opener against San Jose State.

Minshew, a graduate transfer from East Carolina, finished 38-of-57 for 319 yards and three touchdowns Saturday and directed TD drives on four of the Cougars’ five second-half possessions. Washington State only converted 3-of-14 third-down attempts in the contest, but was 3-of-4 on fourth down and overcame a pair of turnovers. “The receivers caught the ball really well in the second half, and I just started throwing the ball better,” Minshew said afterward. “I was making better decisions.” San Jose State, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from last season’s 2-11 finish – the program’s low point in the last seven seasons – but 2018 is off to a rough start with a 44-38 home loss to FCS foe UC Davis on Aug. 30.

TV: 11 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Washington State -34.5

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (0-1): Three quarterbacks played for the Spartans in the opener, and it was the third QB to enter the game, sophomore Montel Aaron, who was by far the most effective, completing 13-of-19 attempts for 254 yards and two TDs in relief of starter Josh Love (14-of-29, 109 yards, one TD, one interception) and Michael Carrillo (1-of-4, 2 yards, one pick). Second-year coach Brent Brennan hasn’t announced who will start Saturday, but Aaron is the obvious odds-on favorite. Defensively, San Jose State surrendered 589 yards to UC Davis, including 446 through the air, and was hurt by three turnovers and 12 penalties for 125 yards.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (1-0): The Cougars cleared a hurdle Saturday as they notched their first season-opening road win since 2004, ending a streak of seven straight losses, and now are back home where they went 7-0 last season, including wins over nationally-ranked USC and Stanford. Nine players caught passes against Wyoming, led by running back James Williams who had a game-high 10 receptions for 53 yards and a TD while pacing the team with 82 rushing yards and a TD on 16 carries. Defensively, the Cougars allowed only 206 total yards, including 67 through the air, and were led by linebacker Dominick Silvels, who recorded six total tackles, including two for losses.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Washington State leads the series 7-4-1, but the two teams have not met since a Ryan Leaf-led 52-16 home win for the Cougars in 1996.

2. San Jose State was 0-7 on the road last season, losing by an average score of 47-15.

3. San Jose State starting RB Tyler Nevens finished with 82 yards and pair of TDs on 18 carries in the opener but was carried off the field after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the game and is not listed on the depth chart in advance of Saturday’s matchup.

PREDICTION: Washington State 51, San Jose State 13

PREDICTION: WYOMING , WASHINGTON ST

Oddsmakers currently have the WYOMING listed as 3.5 point favorites versus the WASHINGTON ST, while the game’s total is sitting at .

Washington State has been the third winningest program in Pac-12 play over the last three years, but the Cougars are entering a season of uncertainty. They’ll begin to find some answers Saturday afternoon in the season opener at Wyoming.

Coach Mike Leach already faced a tall task in replacing three-year starting quarterback and Pac-12 all-time leading passer Luke Falk. But then the program was rocked by the news in January that backup Tyler Hilinski, who started for the injured Falk in the Holiday Bowl, had committed suicide. An offseason of healing has followed, and now the Cougars are beginning anew, likely with East Carolina-transfer Gardner Minshew II taking over the controls of Leach’s Air Raid attack. Wyoming, meanwhile, got an early jump on the new season/post-Josh Allen era Saturday, using a punishing ground attack and a stout defense to dominate host New Mexico State 29-7.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Washington State -1.5

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (2017: 9-4): Leach hasn’t officially named his new starting QB, but most signs point to Minshew, a senior who threw for 3,487 yards and 24 TDs in 17 games at East Carolina. There will be ample targets to throw to as three of the Cougars’ top six pass catchers return in running back James Williams along with wideouts Kyle Sweet and Renard Bell. Defensively, Washington State has had to replace coordinator Alex Grinch and six starters, but brings back its top two tacklers in All-Pac 12 second-team safety Jalen Thompson and linebacker Jahad Woods.

ABOUT WYOMING (1-0): Freshman Tyler Vander Waal got the start in the opener replacing Allen, the seventh overall pick in last spring’s NFL Draft, but it was a rushing attack that rolled up 312 yards on 57 carries that did most of the damage against the Aggies. Nico Evans led the way, rushing for 190 yards and two scores on 24 attempts. The Cowboys were stifling on defense, not allowing New Mexico State across midfield until the game’s waning minutes and limiting the Aggies to seven first downs and 135 total yards – including minus-9 rushing yards on 16 attempts.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Washington State has lost of five of its six season openers under Leach with its only win coming last season in a 31-0 shutout of visiting Montana State of the FCS Big Sky Conference.

2. The Cougars have four of their six meetings with Wyoming, with the latest being a 31-14 home win in 2015.

3. Evans entered Saturday’s opener with 108 career rushing yards on 36 attempts over his first three seasons but eclipsed that total by 82 yards against New Mexico State.

PREDICTION: Washington State 23, Wyoming 21

PREDICTION: Washington 69, Washington State 65

Oddsmakers currently have the WASHINGTON ST listed as 0 point favorites versus the WASHINGTON, while the game’s total is sitting at 155.5.

Washington has lost nine straight and figures to be a quick out in the Pac-12 tournament, but star point guard Markelle Fultz insists the Huskies aren’t about to quit. The dynamic freshman looks to get the Huskies back in the win column Sunday against host Washington State, which ended a five-game losing streak with last Saturday’s 86-71 victory over Arizona State.

Fultz is averaging a league-high 23.2 points for the Huskies, who turned in one of their best efforts of the season against No. 4 Arizona last Saturday before losing 76-68. “We’re right there,” Fultz told reporters. “I think we’re getting ready for something big. We’re getting ready for this next game to get this next win for sure. Getting ready for the Pac-12 tournament.” If the Huskies are going to avenge last month’s 79-74 loss to Washington State, they’ll need to figure out a way to slow down Cougars forward Josh Hawkinson. The 6-10 senior heads into his final home game averaging 19.5 points and 14 rebounds in four career meetings against Washington.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (9-18, 2-13 Pac-12): After missing two games with a sore knee, Fultz returned to the lineup against Arizona and finished with 26 points and six assists while going 10-of-15 from the foul line. The contest also featured the return of 6-9 center Malik Dime, who played for the first time since breaking a finger in his shooting hand last month and had four blocks in 20 minutes while battling foul trouble. Coach Lorenzo Romar continues to be pleased by the play of sophomore guard David Crisp, who is averaging 17.8 points on 48.3 percent shooting over his last four games.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (12-15, 5-10): Senior center Conor Clifford helped spark last Saturday’s win over Arizona State with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while freshman point guard Malachi Flynn added 14 points and seven assists. The Cougars have received a welcome spark from senior guard Ike Iroegbu, who struggled early in league play but has averaged 16.7 points on 48.7 percent shooting over his last nine games. Iroegbu had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against the Sun Devils as the Cougars recorded their first season sweep over a conference opponent since 2011-12.

TIP-INS
1. The road team has won three of the last four meetings in the rivalry matchup.
2. Hawkinson set a school record with his 54th double-double in the victory over Arizona State.
3. Washington State is seeking its first season sweep of the Huskies since 2010-11.
