LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Armon Gates has been hired as a Nebraska assistant coach less than a month after he was named associate head coach at Florida.
Florida coach Mike White had announced the addition of Gates to his staff April 8. Media outlets began reporting last week that Gates would leave the Gators.
Gates said he was not fired at Florida. He said he’s known Miles for years and Nebraska seemed to be a better fit for him. He said he asked White for permission to contact Miles.
Gates spent the last five seasons at Northwestern. Prior to that he was at Loyola of Chicago, TCU and Kent State. Miles said Gates has a positive and high-energy personality and that he’ll be a good role model.
Gates replaces Kenya Hunter, who left to take an assistant’s job at UConn.
