Maryland basketball coach Turgeon receives 4-year extension

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Maryland coach Mark Turgeon has received a four-year extension on his contract, which now runs through the 2022-23 season.

Turgeon enters his sixth season at the school with a 114-59 record. The Terrapins have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two years, including a berth in the Sweet 16 last season.

Turgeon was Big Ten coach of the year in 2014-15 after leading Maryland to a school-record 26 regular-season wins.

Athletic director Kevin Anderson says: ”Mark has built a program that we are incredibly proud of as he continues to lead the great tradition that is Maryland basketball.”

The school announced Turgeon’s extension Thursday.

The 51-year-old took over for Gary Williams, the winningest coach in school history.

Turgeon is now focused on building a legacy of his own.

He says: ”I am extremely grateful to be the coach of this outstanding program. … Maryland basketball continues to have an exciting and bright future.”
