Virginia names Carla Williams as new athletic directorBy HANK KURZ Jr.

The University of Virginia has named Carla Williams as its athletic director.

School president Teresa Sullivan made the announcement Sunday. Williams, an athletics administrator at Georgia for the past 13 years and the deputy director of athletics since 2015, will become the first female African-American athletic director at a Power Five school. She’ll replace Craig Littlepage, who is retiring after 16 years.

”Her experience as a successful student-athlete, coach, and senior administrator at the highest levels of Division I athletics is impressive,” Sullivan said in a release from the school. ”Equally impressive is her commitment to education and the academic pursuits of student-athletes.”

Williams will be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday.

Williams was an All-Southeastern Conference guard on the basketball court at Georgia, then helped recruit and coach some of the greatest teams in Georgia’s history before moving on to become one of the highest-ranking female administrators in Division I athletics.

”My career progression is the result of a commitment to education,” she said in the release. ”Athletics provided the opportunity for me to attend the University of Georgia as a first-generation college student and my advanced degrees enabled me to further my growth and develop my career as an athletics administrator.”
