Lawson, Santiago stand out in NFLPA Game

(STATS) – Rhode Island quarterback JaJuan Lawson was a standout as the American team beat the National squad 10-7 for its first win in the 8th annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Saturday in Pasadena, California.

Lawson threw a 22-yard touchdown to Colorado’s Juwann Winfree midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 7. Wisconsin’s Rafael Gagianone kicked a 43-yard field goal with 4 seconds left in the quarter to provide the winning margin.

Lawson completed 7 of 11 passes for 73 yards. He also had seven carries for 24 yards.

Other FCS-level players also stood out for coach Chuck Pagano. North Dakota running back John Santiago carried the ball three times for 36 yards and caught a game-high five receptions for 39 yards. Incarnate Word linebacker Silas Stewart had four tackles, an interception, a pass breakup and a quarterback hit, and Maine linebacker Sterling Sheffield had three tackles and forced a fumble.

For the National squad, Northern Arizona wide receiver Emmanuel Butler had three receptions for 46 yards. Chattanooga’s Isaiah Mack impressed with seven tackles, including a sack and two for losses, and Eastern Washington cornerback Josh Lewis had three solo tackles.
