Montana player arrested for assault

(STATS) – University of Montana football player Justin Strong was arrested early Saturday following the assault of a Washington State University student in Pullman.

Several news outlets reported Pullman police responded to a fight at a house party and found a 23-year-old man unresponsive and suffering from head injuries. Witnesses told police a group of men assaulted the man.

Strong, 22, originally from Rialto, California, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and later released on his own recognizance. Strong told police he was assaulted by the victim while trying to break up the fight and acted in self-defense when he struck him several times. The victim was hospitalized.

Strong is a redshirt senior safety in his second season at Montana after he spent three years at Oregon State. He was named the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1, two days after he had three interceptions in the Griz’s 45-33 win at Portland State.

The Griz were on a bye this past weekend.
