Gregorius not estimating on return from elbow surgery

NEW YORK (AP) Didi Gregiorius isn’t willing to estimate when he will return to the field for the New York Yankees.

The shortstop is recovering from surgery last October to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right elbow.

Gregorius, who turns 29 on Feb. 18, says ”I have no clue yet” and adds ”hopefully next week I start doing some throwing exercises.”

New York added DJ LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki to shore up its infield during Gregorius’ absence.

Gregorius spoke Wednesday before the annual Thurman Munson Awards dinner, also attended by Yankees manager Aaron Boone and third baseman Miguel Andujar. Gregorius said he knew the severity of his injury immediately after making a throw at Boston’s Fenway Park in Game 2 of the AL Division Series.

He says ”you can ask Andujar, because I told him right away I think my arm is done.”

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says he expected Gregorius back sometime in the summer but has not been more specific. Asked whether he had a date in his mind, Gregorius said ”April,” smiled and added: ”But we all know that’s not going to happen.”
