Willie Desjardins has been summoned to light a fire under the Los Angeles Kings, who named the 61-year-old as the team’s interim head coach after dismissing John Stevens on Sunday. The Kings look to put their best foot forward under their new bench boss on Tuesday when they continue their seven-game homestand against the Anaheim Ducks in the first Freeway Series matchup of the season.

“I want to see us play fast,” Desjardins told reporters following Monday’s practice. “I want to see us play with passion. I want us to be excited when we get to the rink. I want us to start each period quick. … We want to find ways to win.” Los Angeles answered six consecutive losses with victories in two of its last three, but a sputtering offense has registered league lows in goals scored (28) and tallies per game (2.15). Anaheim’s offense isn’t doing much better, as the Ducks reside 29th in goals per game (2.4) despite defenseman Cam Fowler recording his first career hat trick on Sunday as the club snapped a seven-game winless skid (0-5-2) with a 3-2 overtime victory over Columbus. “The main thing is our team found a way to win the game and kind of find a way to get off this losing streak,” said the 26-year-old Fowler, who has three goals and two assists on his three-game point streak.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (6-6-3): Captain Ryan Getzlaf (team high-tying eight assists) returned to practice on Monday, one day removed from sitting out his sixth contest of the season – this time with an upper-body injury. The 33-year-old Getzlaf could draw back in the lineup and carry a four-game point streak (two goals, five assists) into Tuesday’s encounter versus the Kings, against whom he has collected 55 points (19 goals, 36 assists) in 68 career meetings. ABOUT THE KINGS (4-8-1): Ilya Kovalchuk and captain Anze Kopitar each carry a three-game point streak into Tuesday’s tilt, with the former scoring two goals and setting up four others while the latter has one tally and two assists. While Kovalchuk has been playing in the Kontinental Hockey League for several seasons, Kopitar registered five points (two goals, three assists) in five meetings with Anaheim in 2017-18. The Anaheim Ducks have been one of the hottest teams in the league over the last three weeks and will try to extend their winning streak to six games when the scuffling Carolina Hurricanes pay a visit Friday night. The Ducks have won seven of the last eight games, including a 2-1 overtime victory at Carolina last Friday, and own at least a point in nine of 10 following a 4-2 triumph against Chicago on Wednesday.

“Our first period was really good,” Anaheim forward Jakob Silfverberg told reporters after scoring his 99th NHL goal Wednesday. “We were playing with a lot of confidence. That comes from building off earlier games knowing we’re playing really good right now. That’s a big boost for the whole team. We need to keep it going.” The Ducks go after their sixth straight win in the series against the Hurricanes, who have managed one goal on the first two legs of their three-game California trip. Carolina had 34 shots in the 2-0 loss at league-worst Los Angeles on Sunday and outshot San Jose 40-23 on Wednesday only to drop a 5-1 decision for a third consecutive setback overall. “I feel like we’re pretty much doing everything we can. We’re getting enough opportunities,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour told reporters. “The hard part is we’re going to have to stick together and stick with the game plan because it’s easy to go away when it’s not working at all as far as the results.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs got off to a rough start on their four-game road trip but look to sweep the California portion when they visit the offensively challenged Anaheim Ducks on Friday. Toronto suffered a 5-1 loss at Boston on Saturday but has bounced back with victories in Los Angeles and San Jose, giving it five wins in its last six overall contests.

Kasperi Kapanen scored a pair of goals in Thursday’s 5-3 triumph over the Sharks, ending his seven-game drought while eclipsing the career high of seven he set last season. While the Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in three of their last four contests, Anaheim has registered a total of two over its last three games. Nashville improved to 2-0-0 on its five-game road trip and 8-0-0 overall away from home with Saturday’s 5-4 overtime triumph in Dallas as Forsberg helped set up the game-tying goal by Roman Josi with 43 seconds remaining in the third period before fellow defenseman Mattias Ekholm scored 2:27 into the extra session. ABOUT THE DUCKS (7-8-3): Nick Ritchie was back on the ice for Anaheim on Friday after missing six games with an upper-body injury and registered one shot, five hits and a minus-2 rating in just over 15 minutes of action. Each of Anaheim’s last three setbacks have been by one goal, with one occurring in overtime and Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers coming in a shootout. The Ducks, who haven’t won since Oct. 17 against the New York Islanders, fell to 0-1-2 on their four-game homestand but have cause for optimism as Rickard Rakell scored with 26 seconds remaining in the third period to earn the team a point. Columbus is looking to finish its three-game California trip with a winning record as it followed a 4-1 victory at San Jose on Thursday with an identical defeat in Los Angeles two nights later. The Blue Jackets halved their 2-0 deficit in the opening minute of the third period but allowed two short-handed goals 59 seconds apart later in the session after yielding one in their previous 12 games.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (7-6-0): Brandon Dubinsky returned to the lineup Saturday and registered three hits while going 8-7 on faceoffs in 10 minutes, 44 seconds of ice time. The 32-year-old center, who has recorded a goal and an assist in three contests this season, missed 10 games because of a strained oblique. Josh Anderson helped set up defenseman Zach Werenski’s goal against the Kings, giving him three goals and two assists in his last five games.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (5-6-3): Patrick Eaves made his season debut Thursday and saw 10:17 of ice time on 15 shifts. It was only his third game since the start of the 2017-18 campaign for the 34-year-old right wing, who had been sidelined because of post-viral syndrome and shoulder surgery. Captain Ryan Getzlaf set up a pair of tallies versus the Rangers for the third two-point performance of a four-game point streak during which he has collected two goals and five assists.

OVERTIME

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Sunday night marks the chance to chart a new course for the Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres, who meet for the first of two times this season.

Anaheim (2-2-1) is battling injuries to key players and Buffalo (0-4-1) is winless to start the year. Its point came from a shootout loss to Montreal to open the season.

The Ducks hobble into the game with question marks surrounding the health of team captain Ryan Getzlaf. He has played only two games and was a late scratch with a lower-body injury against Colorado on Friday.

When healthy, he plays heavy minutes — more than 22 in each of his two games this season. He recorded two assists as the Ducks held on to beat the Islanders 3-2 on Wednesday.

OVERTIME

1. Buffalo C Sam Reinhart, who has averaged 20 goals over the last two seasons, has yet to record a point and owns a minus-8 rating in five games.

2. The Ducks, who have allowed five power-play goals in five contests this season, are 6-1-1 in their last eight meetings with the Sabres.

3. Fowler, who has recorded a short-handed tally and an assist in the early going, is expected to play his 500th NHL game Sunday.

The Sabres lost 4-2 at Los Angeles on Saturday, allowing a power-play goal with two minutes left and an empty-netter with 13 seconds to play. Buffalo coach coach Phil Housley tried to keep his team encouraged after the loss.

“I can’t fault our guys for their effort. Five-on-five, we were the better hockey team,” Housley said. “Right now, we’re just finding ways to lose. We’ve got to turn the corner and find some ways to win.”

The Sabres should play tight defense under Housley, a Hall of Fame defender who played the first eight seasons of his 21-year career with the team. Buffalo, though, has allowed 22 goals this season, tied for the second-most in the league. Against the Kings, they swallowed up pucks in the defensive zone early but lost a step as the second period went on.

Housley acknowledged the letdown.

“Everything we did well in the first period, we started to get away from in the second,” Housley said. “We started to get it back in the third. We had the majority of the play, but again, it just comes down to special teams.”

The Kings scored three power-play goals.

The Ducks’ typically aggressive offensive style is slowed because of injuries to speedy defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen as well as centers Ryan Kesler and Getzlaf. In the absence of these catalysts, Anaheim has scored only 11 goals in their first five games.

Ducks center Andrew Cogliano, though, is off to a fast start with four goals and six points.

Anaheim may also be facing an injury in their goaltending ranks. John Gibson suffered an injury on a high shot during warmups Friday, and failed to reappear for the second period after stopping 17 shots in the first. Reto Berra, signed for depth as a free agent in July, took over with regular backup Ryan Miller (upper-body) on injured reserve.

Berra performed admirably, stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced.

“So far, I’ve done a couple of backup games, so I kind of know that when I jump in, I have to be ready,” Berra said. “We were in the intermission, so I had time to get ready physically and mentally.”

Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle talked about the effort in Friday’s 3-1 loss at Colorado.

“We couldn’t muster much offense,” Carlyle said. “We did a lot of chasing of the game. They had more legs than we did. They were a faster hockey club than we were.”

The Ducks committed eight minors against the Avalanche, allowing two power-play goals. The Avalanche took two penalties. Anaheim defenseman Brandon Montour scored a short-handed goal for his first tally of the season.

Evander Kane (four goals, seven points), Jason Pominville (four goals, six points) and Jack Eichel (two goals, seven points) lead the Sabres in scoring. They have to be aggressive against the Ducks, a point Eichel recognizes.

“Some little errors … If we clean up, we’ll be able to generate more offense,” Eichel said. “We’ve been spending a lot of time in their end. There are so many highs and lows in a 60-minute game, we just have to stay a little more even-keel when the other team pushes.”

The Sabres are facing their first of 16 sets of back-to-back games. Last season, they were 8-8-3 in the first such game and 6-12-1 in the second.

Buffalo must shake off fatigue Sunday and rally its offense to seize the advantage early. The Ducks need to use the speed of Cogliano and Rickard Rakell, who has two goals and two assists, and stay out of the penalty box.

DENVER — The Colorado Avalanche hope to end their five-day break the same way it started — with a win on home ice.

Those have been rare for Colorado, which ended a 10-game winless streak at Pepsi Center with a 2-1 overtime win against the New York Islanders on Friday. That preceded the team’s five-day hiatus that every NHL team will experience before the end of February.

Now the Avalanche (13-25-1) are back to work and have a tough task ahead when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night. The Ducks are in strong playoff contention and playing like a postseason team. They are coming off a 2-0 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday and have won four of their past five games.

Goaltender Josh Gibson got his third shutout of the season and second in four games in the win over the Stars, which preceded a two-game trip that ends in Arizona on Saturday night.

The good news for Anaheim (22-13-8) is it might get back forward Ryan Getzlaf. He has been out since sustaining a lower-body injury against the Philadelphia Flyers on New Year’s Day but tested it before Tuesday’s game. The Ducks decided to hold him out for one more game in the hopes that he will be available against Colorado.

“I feel pretty good,” Getzlaf told The Orange County Register. “For the most part, there’s a couple little things here and there that still have to come along. I don’t know if that’s just tentativeness or if it’s actual pain and those kinds of things. So we’ll see.”

Colorado’s break ended with a 4 p.m. local time practice at its practice facility on Wednesday. It was the first time the public could watch Nathan MacKinnon on the ice after he was named the team’s representative to the NHL All-Star Game. It is his first time being an NHL All-Star.

The honor is a little consolation in a season that has gone south for the Avalanche since they were 9-9-0 in November. Friday’s win was their first at Pepsi Center since beating the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 15, and the frustration was apparent for the players.

“It was a long time coming,” MacKinnon said after the victory over the Islanders. “It’s been tough at home, it’s been tough in general, obviously. Wins haven’t been easy to get, and obviously we have a lot of work to do still, but it definitely feels good to win.”

Anaheim has two All-Star Game representatives — forward Ryan Kesler and defenseman Cam Fowler.

The Ducks are trying something new on this two-game road trip. While it has become vogue for teams to host “dad trips” when players’ fathers join the team on the road, Anaheim is hosting a “siblings trip” to Colorado and Arizona.

The Ducks are accompanied by a group of 14 that includes eight sisters, five brothers and one mother.

“We think it’s an opportunity for their families to experience what the ‘prized one’ in the family is doing for a living,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told the team website. “I’m sure they’re all excited and hopefully they have a good time and we have some success, where the players take on the motto of win one for my brother or my sister or my mother.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Detroit Red Wings haven’t scored a power-play goal on the road since Oct. 17 and are 1-for-36 overall in the last nine games heading into their matchup Wednesday night at the Anaheim Ducks.

The man-advantage slump has dropped the Red Wings into last in the NHL in power-play efficiency at 11.7 percent, a steep drop after they finished 13th last season (18.8).

“That really is crazy,” Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall told the Detroit Free Press. “If you get one or two, it’s a different game. That is going to be the biggest key. Moving forward, we have to get our power play going.”

Detroit, which is 3-5-2 in its last 10 games, made a slight change to its power play during practice Tuesday, replacing Riley Sheahan on the second unit with Steve Ott, who worked with fellow forwards Anthony Mantha and Tomas Tatar.

The Ducks featured the top power play in the NHL last season at 23 percent and currently sit No. 2 behind the Columbus Blue Jackets, converting on 24 percent of their man-advantage opportunities.

Anaheim may have to play Detroit without one of its key players on the power play, as team captain Ryan Getzlaf left Sunday’s shootout victory against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers with a lower-body injury.

Getzlaf received treatment while the rest of the team practiced Tuesday morning and showed improvement, according to assistant Coach Paul MacLean, but remains day-to-day.

“We’ll come in tomorrow and see where he is,” MacLean said.

As insurance, the Ducks recalled forward Chris Wagner from their American Hockey League affiliate in San Diego. Wagner, 25, has two goals in 21 games with Anaheim this season, as well as four goals 11 games with San Diego.

Detroit defenseman Mike Green still has not returned to the ice since he suffered an upper-body injury in a 6-4 win against the Ducks on Dec. 17 in Detroit. Green is one of seven Red Wings players currently on injured reserve.

Detroit center Darren Helm skated Tuesday, but remains week-to-week with a shoulder injury that’s already sidelined him 20 games. Justin Abdelkader also skated but the veteran left wing will likely miss his 14th straight game with a knee injury.

Ducks goaltender John Gibson tied a franchise record while stopping 51 shots in Sunday’s win against the Flyers and turned away four of five in the shootout. He would normally be due for a break, but backup Jonathan Bernier struggled against the Red Wings last month, allowing four goals on 21 shots before he was pulled in favor of Gibson.

Bernier then surrendered five goals three days later at the Montreal Canadiens. His only appearance since then was a four-minute stint against the Flyers on Sunday, when he replaced Gibson after the Flyers had scored their third goal of the game early in the second period. Bernier made one save before Gibson returned and blanked the Flyers the rest of the way.

Ottawa Senators vs. Anaheim Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. — All four principals in one of the most significant trades in both teams’ history likely will take the ice in the same game for the first time when the Anaheim Ducks meet the Ottawa Senators on Sunday at the Honda Center.

Senators winger Bobby Ryan returns to the city where he began his NHL career to face fellow wingers Jakob Silfverberg, Nick Ritchie and Stefan Noesen, now property of the Ducks.

Ryan was Anaheim’s first selection and the second overall in the 2005 NHL draft. The native of Cherry Hill, N.J., joined the Ducks in 2007 and scored at least 30 goals in four consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2012. But managing the salary cap meant trading Ryan in July 2013 for Silfverberg, Noesen and Ottawa’s first draft choice in the 2014 draft, the 10th overall selection, which Anaheim used on Ritchie.

Since arriving in Canada’s capital, Ryan has yet to have the kind of offensive success he enjoyed playing on the same line as center Ryan Getzlaf and right winger Corey Perry. Now 29, Ryan accumulated as many as 23 goals for the Senators in 2013-14 and 56 points last season. Both totals fall short of his highs with the Ducks.

This season, Ryan has only three goals and eight points after 23 games. He sustained a bone bruise on one of his fingers Nov. 17 against the Nashville Predators. He missed five of the ensuing nine games and before returning to the lineup Wednesday night in San Jose.

Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion considered making a trade if Ryan were unavailable for an extended period.

“It does take pressure off, because when Bobby first got hurt, we didn’t know the extent of it,” Dorion told the Ottawa Citizen. “For awhile there, we thought it could be long-term. I made a few calls, but we’re very happy with our depth and the guys we’ve called up have done a good job, whether it’s up front or on defense. I’m still making calls, but with Bobby back, there might not be as much need immediately.”

Meanwhile, Silfverberg found a home on the right side of the Ducks’ most consistent line, which includes center Ryan Kesler and left winger Andrew Cogliano. Silfverberg owns a reputation as a solid two-way forward as the 26-year-old Swede ranks third on the team with eight goals and leads Anaheim with a plus-9 rating.

Ritchie, who turned 21 on Monday, is on pace to finish with 18 goals as a left winger after being shuttled between the Ducks and their AHL affiliate in San Diego last season. Ritchie has played with Getzlaf and Perry on the first line and on the third line as a physical presence with skill.

Noesen, promoted from San Diego on Wednesday, made his season debut that night against the Carolina Hurricanes and scored his first NHL goal in his third career appearance. In San Diego the previous night, Noesen scored the tying goal with 9.3 seconds left in regulation, as the Gulls earned a 4-3 overtime victory against Bakersfield.

“It’s definitely surreal,” Noesen said of the timing. “I’m happy to be here.”
