Perhaps the Miami Hurricanes have caught a break.

Or maybe not.

The 18th-ranked Hurricanes (8-2) will play the No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-3) in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 29 in Orlando, Fla.

Oklahoma State is 2-2 against ranked teams this season and Miami is 1-2. The Hurricanes are coming off an embarrassing 62-26 home loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, who had 554 yards rushing and 778 yards in total offense.

“Our kids have a bad taste in our mouths after that game,” Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said.

The break that Miami might have caught is that Cowboys star running back Chuba Hubbard earlier this month opted to skip the rest of the season to prepare for the NFL draft.

Hubbard was a unanimous All-America selection last season, when he rushed for 2,094 yards, a 6.4-yard average and 21 touchdowns.

This year, Hubbard managed just 625 yards, a 4.7 average and five TDs. He hasn’t played since Nov. 21 due to an ankle injury, and his backups have done very well.

Meanwhile, Miami has been weakened on defense as both of their star defensive ends — Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche — are skipping the bowl game to prepare for the draft. Phillips and Roche combined this season for 30 tackles for losses, 12.5 sacks, four passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and one interception.

Redshirt freshmen Jahfari Harvey and Cam Williams are Miami’s new starting defensive ends, and they combined for 3.5 tackles for losses this season, albeit in few snaps.

The Cowboys, who have alternated a loss with a win for their past six games, are coming off an impressive 42-3 victory over Baylor on Dec. 12.

With Hubbard out, the Cowboys have had a 100-yard rusher in each of their past three games. The streak started when Dezmon Jackson rushed for 235 yards (6.5 average) and three touchdowns in a 50-44 win over Texas Tech.

“All week, I was running so hard to get myself in shape because this was my first start,” Jackson said after that game. “Practice translates to the field, and I wasn’t really tired in the game.”

Jackson then had 118 yards (4.1 average) in a 29-22 loss to Texas Christian.

Against Baylor, Dominic Richardson ran for 169 yards (7.3 average) and three touchdowns.

Oklahoma State’s passing game, led by Spencer Sanders, also is dangerous. Sanders, a second-year starter, has passed for 26 touchdowns and 3,767 yards in the past two years. But he also has been intercepted 19 times in 19 games.

Cowboys wide receiver Tylan Wallace, a third-year starter, has 53 catches for 877 yards and six TDs. But when he went down with a leg injury against Baylor, OSU’s Dillon Stoner had a huge game, grabbing eight passes for 247 yards and three scores.

Oklahoma State’s ability to find new stars on the fly has to concern a shaken Hurricanes defense, especially without their star linemen. Miami starting cornerback Al Blades also is out, due to myocarditis, a heart condition.

Offensively, Miami is led by D’Eriq King, who has passed for 2,573 yards, 22 TDs and just five interceptions this year. He has also rushed for 520 yards and four touchdowns.

Wide receiver Mike Harley (49 catches, 730 yards, six TDs) is King’s biggest playmaker.

Tight ends Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory — both NFL prospects — have combined this season for 48 catches, 742 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Miami Dolphins head into the final two weeks of the regular season occupying the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC. But as far as coach Brian Flores is concerned, his team must approach Saturday night’s game at Las Vegas with a playoff mentality.

“Our playoff is this week against the Raiders,” Flores said. “We’re in a one-game season.”

The Dolphins and eighth-seed Baltimore are both 9-5 heading into this weekend’s action but the Ravens, who host the New York Giants (5-9) before finishing up at Cincinnati (3-10-1), on paper have a big edge in the remaining schedule. After playing Las Vegas (7-7), which mathematically still has a very slim chance at making the playoffs, Miami must travel to Buffalo (11-3), which has already clinched the AFC East crown.

“It’s good to kind of (go) through that and realize we’re still playing meaningful football,” Flores said.

The Dolphins, who will spend their Christmas Day flying across the country to Las Vegas, eliminated the New England Patriots from the playoff race with a 22-12 victory on Sunday. Undrafted free agent Salvon Ahmed led the way, rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown, as Miami, despite starting six rookies on offense, rushed for 250 yards, breaking the 200-yard mark on the ground in a game for the first time since Dec. 24, 2016 at Buffalo, when it ran for 261 yards.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa went 20-of-26 passing for 145 yards and an interception and also rushed for two touchdowns to improve to 5-2 as a starter. The fifth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama is completing 63.5 percent of his passes in his starts to go with nine touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Depending on how things go in practice this week, Tagovailoa could be matched up against his fellow Honolulu St. Louis High School alum, Raiders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Mariota took over in relief for Derek Carr, who suffered a groin injury late in the first quarter in Thursday night’s 30-27 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He went 17-of-28 passing for 226 yards with one touchdown and one interception before leaving. He also rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, with eight of his runs accounting for first downs.

“I think that would be awesome seeing Marcus (play) because me and (linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill), we’re both from Hawaii,” Tagovailoa said when asked by reporters after Sunday’s win about the possibility of a potential all-Hawaii quarterback battle. “Marcus is from Hawaii. Me and Marcus went to the same high school. I think that (would) be something pretty cool, something special.”

However, Carr alternated snaps with Mariota in practice on Tuesday and said he’s “doing everything in his power” to try and play on Saturday night.

“We’ll see how it goes this week,” Raiders coach Jon Gruden said. “He’s chomping at the bit to play. We’ll do what we think is right for Derek and this team.”

Carr pulled up and grabbed the inside of his left leg while trying to scramble around right end, hopping out of the bounds and heading straight to the locker room.

“I went to sprint for the end zone and it just went,” he said of his groin.

The loss to the Chargers was the fourth in the last five games for Las Vegas, which ends the regular season at Denver. The Raiders are just 5-13 (.278 percent) in December-January games since the start of 2017. Only the Carolina Panthers (4-12) have a worse mark during that span.

Three defensive starters — safety Johnathan Abram, linebacker Nicholas Morrow and cornerback Damon Arnette — who sat out the loss to the Chargers with concussions were limited in practice on Tuesday, while defensive end Clelin Ferrell (shoulder) remained out. Safety Erik Harris joined defensive back Daryl Worley, cornerback Isaiah Johnson and wide receiver Henry Ruggs III on the COVID-19 list while linebacker Tanner Muse was shifted to injured reserve.

Miami guard Solomon Kindley, carted off with a knee injury in Sunday’s win, did not suffer any structural damage and could play Saturday. Kindley, a rookie who has started 13 games, was the only Dolphin to sit out Tuesday’s practice.

Coach Bill Belichick is a master of making sure the New England Patriots brush aside outside distractions, but that single-mindedness could be put to the test this week. Questions abound over whether All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown, acquired before last week’s season opener, will be in the lineup Sunday when the reigning Super Bowl champions visit the Miami Dolphins.

Brown’s abrupt release by Oakland and subsequent signing with the Patriots was a shocking development, but the plot thickened this week when a woman filed a lawsuit charging him with rape and sexual assault. “It’s not a distraction,” New England cornerback Stephon Gilmore said. “That’s one thing about this team — we focus on our next opponent, and that’s Miami. We don’t let outside stuff distract us.” While the Patriots dismantled Pittsburgh 33-3 in their opener, Miami was embarrassed in a 59-10 mauling at Baltimore in the head coaching debut of former New England assistant Brian Flores. The Dolphins, however, have won two of the past three meetings against the Patriots and are 10-7 against future Hall of Famer Tom Brady in Miami.

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS (1-0): Brown, who forced an offseason trade from Pittsburgh to Oakland after six straight seasons with at least 101 catches, was ineligible to play in last week’s opener but Brady looked fine with the cast at hand, throwing for 341 yards and three touchdowns passes. Starting running back Sony Michel, who rushed for 169 yards in two meetings versus Miami last season, managed only 14 on 15 carries last week, but backups Rex Burkhead and James White combined for 70 yards rushing while adding five receptions apiece. Julian Edelman had six catches for 83 yards and Phillip Dorsett hauled in a pair of scoring passes, while the defense limited the Steelers to 32 yards rushing.

That’s not how you play the game. To take any other approach is disrespectful to the game, so it’s very important.”

ABOUT THE RAVENS (2018: 10-6, FIRST IN AFC NORTH): Baltimore is convinced that Ingram, 29, has plenty left in the tank after splitting carries for years with the Saints. “He’s a proven back in the National Football League,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters. “He seems very healthy. (There is) not a lot of wear and tear on Mark. He’s a downhill, physical runner. He fits our style.” Ingram will run between the tackles while Jackson takes off around the outside and goes after Michael Vick’s record for rushing yards by a quarterback (1,039).

The Giants hope the change of scenery alters their fortunes on Tuesday when they begin an 11-day, nine-game swing with the opener of a three-game series versus the Miami Marlins.

All the Washington Nationals needed to start turning their season around was a visit from the Miami Marlins. The Nationals will try to keep rolling and finish off a four-game sweep when they host the Marlins in the series finale on Monday afternoon.

Washington dropped five in a row and 13 of 18 to fall 12 games under .500 and bring about some questions about the job security of manager Dave Martinez, but a solid weekend against the National League-worst Marlins is quieting some of that talk. The Nationals had to ride out another rollercoaster performance from the bullpen while scratching out a 12-10 victory in Friday’s opener, but got a shutout from Patrick Corbin on Saturday and survived another scare from the relief corps in Sunday’s 9-6 triumph. Miami fell into a 9-0 hole after the first seven innings on Saturday before giving themselves a chance behind big hits from Brian Anderson and Neil Walker. The Marlins will try to get Nationals ace Max Scherzer out of the game early on Monday while trying to provide some support for right-hander Jose Urena.

Urena is riding a streak of three consecutive quality starts and earned a win at Detroit on Wednesday while allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits in six frames. The 27-year-old Dominican received a total of 15 runs of support in his two wins but 13 in his other eight outings, with the offense leaving him on the wrong end of three shutouts. Urena’s first win of the season came at home against Washington on April 20, when he scattered two earned runs and eight hits over six innings in a 9-3 final.

Scherzer is trying to find his Cy Young form and enjoyed his first scoreless outing of the season when he held the New York Mets to four hits while striking out nine in six frames on Wednesday. The 34-year-old is not getting a lot of help from his bullpen or offense and is 1-3 in his last eight turns despite registering seven quality starts in that span. Scherzer, who leads the National League with 96 strikeouts, endured his worst start of the season while going up against Urena on April 20 and was ripped for seven runs – six earned – on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Washington’s bullpen owns a league-worst 7.09 ERA and surrendered five runs in as many innings before being bailed out by the offense in Friday’s 12-10 victory but got the day off on Saturday, when Corbin breezed through all nine innings while allowing four hits and walking one. PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Caleb Smith (3-1, 2.38 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Erick Fedde (0-0, 2.87)

Smith allowed three or fewer runs in each of his nine starts and two or fewer in eight of those outings. The 27-year-old struck out seven and did not walk a batter over five innings at Detroit on Tuesday while allowing two runs and three hits without factoring in the decision. Smith faced Washington at home on April 19 and scattered one run along with five hits over six innings while striking out eight to earn the win.

Fedde is starting in place of Anibal Sanchez (hamstring), who is scheduled for a side session on Sunday and could make a rehab start next week. Fedde was serving in a long relief role before making his first start of the season on Tuesday and holding the New York Mets to one run on four hits over five innings before watching the bullpen serve up five runs in a no decision. The 26-year-old made one appearance against Miami last season and yielded two runs on as many hits and four walks across 4 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals OF Juan Soto hit safely in his last nine games and is 8-for-11 over the last three contests.

2. Miami OF Harold Ramirez is 9-for-20 with six runs scored over his last five contests.

3. Washington made some bullpen changes on Saturday by recalling RHP James Bourque from Double-A Harrisburg and optioning RHP Joe Ross to Triple-A Fresno.

Oddsmakers currently have the DETROIT listed as -120 point favorites versus the MIAMI, while the game’s total is sitting at 8.5.

The last-place Miami Marlins suddenly own the longest winning streak in the National League and they’ll try to push their run to five in a row when they continue a three-game series at the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. After sweeping three from the New York Mets at home over the weekend, the Marlins picked up a 5-4 win over the Tigers in 11 innings on Tuesday.

Rookie outfielder Harold Ramirez clubbed his first career home run and Brian Anderson also went deep for Miami, which snapped a five-game road losing streak with the triumph. While the Marlins are on a roll, the Tigers are headed in the other direction with seven consecutive losses — all at home. They’ve been held to four runs or fewer in each of those setbacks and managed only five hits in the 11-inning loss. Detroit will try to give a little more support to lefty Daniel Norris when he starts Wednesday opposite Jose Urena for Miami.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Urena (1-6, 4.44 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Daniel Norris (2-2, 4.50)

Urena has allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts but is 0-1 in that span as run support remains hard to come by. He is 5-3 with a 3.03 ERA in his career in interleague play after posting six strong innings against Tampa Bay his last time out. The 27-year-old from the Dominican Republic, who has never faced the Tigers, has completed exactly seven innings in each of his last two road starts.

Norris is 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA since being moved into the rotation in April, finishing six innings in just one of his six starts. He was knocked around for a season-high six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to Oakland on Friday. The Tennessee native defeated the Marlins with five innings of two-run ball in their only prior meeting.

1. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is 7-for-16 with three RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

2. Marlins RHP Sergio Romo, who leads the team with seven saves, has given up five runs (three earned) in seven innings over his last six outings.

3. Miami INF/OF Jon Berti (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list and OF Austin Dean was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.
