PHILADELPHIA — The New York Giants can clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2011 with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday.

The Giants (10-4) hold the top wildcard spot, two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-6) and the Green Bay Packers (8-6).

They finish the season on Jan. 1 against the Washington Redskins.

The Eagles (5-9) will play the role of spoiler against their East Division rivals, having been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday with a loss at Baltimore. The Giants knocked off the Eagles 28-23 in Week 9. The game was one of six losses for the Eagles in games decided by seven points or fewer.

Philadelphia’s rookie quarterback Carson Wentz threw for 364 yards in the first meeting with the Giants, a career high, but he will be facing a defense that has allowed an NFL-low passer rating of 70.0 since Week 5.

Since Week 7, the Big Blue defense have the best scoring defense in the league, allowing just 14.9 points a game, and are the best in third-down defense, allowing a conversion just 29.6 percent of the time.

The architect of New York’ defense is Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator who oversaw the 2007 championship defense.

“He’s done a really good job,” said Giants defensive tackle Damon Harrison of Spagnuolo. “Historically, the defense speaks for itself because it’s a Super-Bowl winning defense. It was a just a matter of getting everyone in the right position and getting everyone to buy in and used to playing with each other.

“That’s tough when you bring in a new group like we’ve done this offseason. It’s a credit to 1/8Spagnuolo 3/8 in getting guys to buy in and play together.”

One of those guys Harrison referred to is defensive end Romeo Okwara, an undrafted free-agent out of Notre Dame, who has done a nice job of filling in for Jason Pierre-Paul who is out with season-ending surgery. In his first start of the season against Dallas in a nationally-televised game on December 11th, Okwara recorded eight combined tackles and the first sack of his career.

“Their defense is playing really well,” said Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich. “They are getting after the passer and rushing the passer very well. They have two really good corners, obviously a good safety, good secondary.

“They have good personnel on their defense. It just seems like they are hitting their stride defensively. We know 1/8Spagnuolo 3/8 is a very good coordinator. They are playing with a lot of momentum right now and playing at a high level. Really good in the red zone. Really good on third down. Pretty good against the run. So it will be a good challenge for us.”

The Eagles running game will get a boost from running back Darren Sproles, who was cleared after undergoing concussion protocol. However, his replacement in the Baltimore game, Kenjon Barner, is out with a hamstring injury. Sproles is second to Ryan Mathews (615 yards) in rushing with 366 yards.

Philadelphia averages 112.9 yards on the ground and 227.5 in the air.

The Giants will be without running back Shane Vereen who reinjured his triceps in the 17-6 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Vereen has endured a tough-luck season. He missed nine games earlier with the triceps injury, returned to face Dallas, but lasted just three plays before sustaining a concussion. Vereen was cleared for the Lions game, but re-injured his triceps.

The workload will go to Paul Perkins, who is coming off the best game of his rookie season. The UCLA product carried the ball 11 times for 56 yards against the Lions.

“Whenever any player is able to get in a rhythm — not just running backs — quarterbacks, receivers, anybody. Whenever you’re able to get in that rhythm the game starts to slow down and you get more comfortable.”

The Eagles have outscored the Giants 54-7 in the last two games they’ve hosted New York at Lincoln Financial Field. Giants quarterback Eli Manning’s five career losses against the Eagles are his most against any opponent, as are his 26 career interceptions thrown against Philadelphia.

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (6-5-1): Washington boasts the NFL’s second-ranked offense (418.6 yards per game) and could get a boost as Jordan Reed told reporters he feels confident he’ll play on Sunday after sitting out last week’s tilt with a Grade 3 separation of the AC joint in his left shoulder. Coach Jay Gruden wasn’t exactly on board with his stud tight end’s health report, saying he has “absolutely no idea” if Reed will play and that it could come down to Saturday afternoon or game time before a decision is made. Reed ripped the Eagles for nine catches, 129 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 16 win last season, but sat out the first encounter this season due to injury.

The former was able to practice on Thursday after missing his first game – college or pro – last week against the Bengals while the latter has been sidelined several weeks with an MCL sprain. A lack of potent running game has forced Wentz to average 45 pass attempts over his last six games – including 60 last week.

The Green Bay Packers started the season, as they always do, with championship aspirations.

The Philadelphia Eagles, after crushing Pittsburgh 34-3 to improve to 3-0, looked like they were emerging as a surprise challenger.

Instead, Monday night’s game at Lincoln Financial Field could serve as an elimination game. The Packers have lost four in a row to plunge to 4-6 and 14th place in the NFC playoff race. Even with an upset victory over the Eagles, they figure to be two games behind in the NFC North, with Minnesota (6-4) visiting Detroit (6-4) playing on Thanksgiving.

The Eagles have crashed back to Earth with losses in five of their last seven games. At 5-5, they are in ninth place in the NFC and trail Washington (6-3-1) for the final NFC wild-card spot.

For the Packers, this is unexpected territory as they join New England as the only teams to qualify for the playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.

Coach Mike McCarthy’s confidence, however, hasn’t waned.

“We have the right kind of men,” he said. “This group of men, we’re going to get to where we want to go. I’m fully confident in that. The process, the approach, the preparation, we’re going to get this the way it needs to be. This locker room is awesome.

“We’ve got to win. We get that. It’s about results. But everything leading up to that, I’m very pleased with. So we’re just going to keep stoking our fire and we’re going to do everything we need to do this week and prepare to go beat Philadelphia.”

For the Eagles, their up-and-down play isn’t surprising considering rookie Carson Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, is learning on the job. That doesn’t mean there isn’t disappointment.

They lost last week at Seattle by 11 points but their other four losses have come by a combined 19 points.

“It’s something that we kind of in the back of our minds sort of planned for,” first-year coach Doug Pederson said. “Still, to be 5-5 and to be in the thick of it is a credit to him and the rest of the team and how well they’ve played. We’ve had our chances. We’ve had moments to pull out some of these close games that we’ve been in. It’s just something that it is what it is right now. He’s learning. Every rep that he takes, he’s learning. It’s going to make him a much better quarterback down the road.”

If there are big advantages for the Eagles, it’s defense and venue. The Eagles rank fourth in the league with 18.6 points allowed per game. They’ve allowed a total of 38 points in going 4-0 at home.

The Packers, meanwhile, gave up 47 points at Tennessee in Week 10 and 42 more at Washington in Week 11. Green Bay hasn’t allowed back-to-back 40-point games since 1953 or four consecutive 30-point games since 1952. The Packers have lost four in a row on the road for the first time since 2008.

Injuries are a factor for both teams.

The Eagles’ top running backs, Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles, were knocked out of the Seattle game. Sproles (broken rib) is more likely to play than Mathews (knee), Pederson said. Still, it could leave the Eagles’ running game in the hands of rookie Wendell Smallwood.

Top cornerback Leodis McKelvin is in the concussion protocol.

The Packers had seven starters out by the end of the Washington game, including both starting cornerbacks and both starting inside linebackers. With the injuries to Jake Ryan (ankle) and Blake Martinez (knee) at inside linebacker, the Packers might be forced to move Clay Matthews back inside, where he played the previous season-and-a-half.

There’s a chance the Packers could get back second-year cornerback Damarious Randall, who’s missed the past five games following groin surgery, but veteran Sam Shields will spend the rest of the season on injured reserve with a concussion.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota took advantage of that depleted secondary to post passer ratings of more than 145 the last two weeks.

Can Wentz take advantage, too? In his first four games, Wentz had a 103.5 passer rating with seven touchdowns vs. one interception. In the last six games, he’s had a passer rating of 72.3 with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

Against Seattle, Wentz completed 51.1 percent of his passes, threw two interceptions and had a passer rating of just 61.2.

“We’ve just got to be on point. We had a couple mistakes that really hurt us,” Wentz said. “Especially when you’re facing good teams, you can’t have those letdowns. You have to be sharp. You can’t have those little mistakes that can really cost you big in the end. I think we’re learning that. Unfortunately, we have too many of those every week, even in wins.”

Seattle’s top-ranked defense (285.8 per game) is carrying the club and has allowed just six points in the last two contests – a field goal each against Cardinals and 49ers. It has been more than Sherman picking up his play and the whole unit is responsible for allowing an average of 184 yards in the past two games. “We’re dedicated to one another right now,” Sherman told reporters. “When you’re on the field playing for one another, we’re playing like some 9-year-old, 10-year-old kids – not worried about the outcome and not worried about individual stats or anything like that.” Quarterback Russell Wilson remains efficient and has 15 touchdowns against five interceptions and running back Marshawn Lynch has 956 rushing yards and an NFL-high nine rushing touchdowns.

Darren Sproles had two touchdowns, Sanchez threw for two scores and the defense sacked Cam Newton nine times to help the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Carolina Panthers 45-21 Monday night.

Filling in for an injured Nick Foles, Sanchez had 332 yards passing in his first start since Dec. 30, 2012. Sproles returned a punt 65 yards for a score and had an 8-yard TD run. Bradley Fletcher returned an interception 34 yards for a TD and Jordan Matthews had 138 yards receiving and two TDs.

The Eagles (7-2) stayed on top in the NFC East. They’re trying to repeat as division champions without Foles, who broke his collarbone in a win at Houston last week.

The Panthers (3-6-1) hardly look like the team that won the NFC South last year. They’ve lost four in a row and already have allowed more points in 10 games than they did in 2013. Making things worse, Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei was carted off the field late in the third quarter.

Newton threw the first of three interceptions and DeAngelo Williams lost a fumble on Carolina’s first three plays from scrimmage. The turnovers led to 10 points for the Eagles.

Conor Barwin had 3½ sacks and Brandon Graham had 1½. Newton had never been sacked more than seven times in his career.

The game was in Philadelphia’s control when Newton threw a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to Kelvin Benjamin.

Casey Matthews, starting for injured linebacker DeMeco Ryans, forced Williams’ fumble and Cedric Thornton recovered at the Panthers 22. Cody Parkey hit a 39-yarder to make it 3-0.

Cary Williams then intercepted Newton on Carolina’s next offensive play. It was the first pick by an Eagles cornerback this season.

Sanchez completed passes of 15 yards to Jeremy Maclin and 21 yards to Brent Celek to set up Sproles’ score. Sproles took a handoff and ran off the left side untouched.

The Panthers answered on their ensuing possession. Newton connected with Greg Olsen on a 38-yard pass and converted a pair of third-down passes to keep the drive going. Jonathan Stewart jumped over the top from the 1 to cut it to 10-7.

Sproles broke loose up the middle, deked punter Brad Nortman and cut to the right sideline on his way to his second punt return for a score this season and fourth in his career, giving the Eagles a 17-7 lead.

Fletcher stepped in front of a poor pass intended for Jason Avant and ran it back to put the Eagles up 31-7. The Eagles already have a franchise-record nine touchdowns on defense and special teams.

LeSean McCoy ran in from the 1 to make it 38-7. Matthews caught an 18-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Benjamin had TD catches of 21 and 40 yards.
