The Phoenix Suns return from a successful road trip to open a three-game homestand that begins Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks.

Phoenix went 3-1 on the trip, which concluded Sunday with a 101-97 overtime win over the Charlotte Hornets. The Hawks are 2-3 on their current eight-game road trip after Sunday’s 126-102 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

This will be the first meeting between the two clubs this season, with a return match scheduled for May 5 in Atlanta. They split two games during the 2019-20 season, each winning on their home court.

Phoenix forward Devin Booker scored 35 points against Charlotte, including four 3-pointers that lifted him to No. 3 in franchise history. He has 753 treys, passing Leandro Barbosa (751) and trailing only Steve Nash (1,051) and Dan Majerle (800). Booker leads the team in scoring at 25.1 points.

Booker has a unique connection to one of the Hawks. His father, Melvin Booker, played for Italy’s Olimpia Milano in 2007-08 and was teammates with Atlanta’s Danilo Gallinari. The young Booker, then 12, sometimes played one-on-one against Gallinari.

Deandre Ayton has been hot over the past five games, during which he’s averaged 19.4 points – his season average is 14.8 – with 11.2 rebounds. His streak of making at least two-thirds of his field-goal attempts ended at four games Sunday when made 6 of 11 shots from the floor.

Mikal Bridges had the key defensive stop against the Hornets with 20.4 seconds left in overtime when he successfully contested Devonte’ Graham’s 3-pointer to protect a two-point Phoenix lead.

“A lot of my game is to play defense,” Bridges said. “I just went out and got a stop.”

Suns coach Monty Williams said, “Defensively, his contests are some of the best in the league at his position after a screen. He has a knack for making plays.”

The Hawks were out of sorts against the Nuggets, who were revitalized by the acquisition of three new players at the trade deadline. Atlanta lost its composure a few times early when the team failed to get the benefit of a call.

“Early in the game we got distracted by that and we didn’t make adjustments appropriately and they pretty much controlled the game from start to finish,” Atlanta coach Nate McMillan said.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Atlanta’s Trae Young said. “It’s disappointing losing the way we did.”

The team was thin again Sunday with the absence of De’Andre Hunter, who missed his second straight game with right knee soreness. The team is taking a cautious approach with Hunter since he returned from missing 23 games following surgery on his right knee. He returned to play in two games on the current road trip, but swelling in the knee prompted McMillan to rest him; his availability for Tuesday is uncertain.

“We’re trying to get that (soreness) removed before he gets on the floor again,” McMillan said Sunday. “He hasn’t done anything for the last three days.”

The Hawks will be a bit deeper on Tuesday when veteran guard Lou Williams joins the team. He was acquired at the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Rajon Rondo. Williams, who averaged 12.1 points in 42 games for the Clippers this season, grew up in the Atlanta area and played for the Hawks from 2012 to 2014.

Oddsmakers opened the Cavaliers as -14.5-point favorites versus the Suns, while the game’s total opened at 221.

The Cleveland Cavaliers freely acknowledge they are in a bit of a slump. Now they could be without one of their superstars when they host the Phoenix Suns on Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Kevin Love did not participate in contact drills during Wednesday’s practice because of a sore back and is considered questionable for the Suns.

Love sat the second half of Monday’s demolition at the hands of the Golden State Warriors and Love was confident after the game the tightness in his lower back wouldn’t force him to miss any games.

The Cavs, however, have been conservative with injuries this season and are being so again.

Kyle Korver started the second half in place of Love on Monday and might be in line to make his first start since joining the Cavaliers if Love is unable to play.

Korver has participated in two practices since the trade from Atlanta and is beginning to feel more comfortable in the Cavs’ system, but it all remains a work in progress.

Coach Tyronn Lue is installing motion sets for the second unit that will benefit Korver because they are similar to some of the sets he ran with the Hawks.

But they are foreign to the entire reserves unit because the Cavs have never used them before.

That’s only one of the reasons the Cavs’ assist totals are down and turnovers are up. The Cavs have finished with more turnovers than assists in four of their last five games and five of their last seven.

Lue said the goal on the recently-concluded West Coast trip was 4-2, but instead they went 3-3, including a humiliating 35-point loss at the Warriors on Monday.

“The last game wasn’t our best game, but it is what it is,” Lue said. “We were one game down from where we wanted to be going into this trip, so not a big deal. We can make that up.”

The Cavaliers squandered a 22-point lead to the Suns last week at Phoenix before holding on for a four-point victory against the worst team in the Western Conference.

Center Tyson Chandler, guard Brandon Knight and forward Jared Dudley of the Suns missed Monday’s home loss to the Utah Jazz. Chandler had a stomach virus and should be available Thursday for the first stop on the Suns’ three-game swing through the Eastern Conference.

Knight has missed three of the last six games because of a sprained right wrist and Dudley was battling dizziness.

Coach Earl Watson isn’t sure yet on the status of Knight and Dudley and indicated the team was fighting some kind of bug after the long travel day.

“We’re taking it one day at a time,” Watson told the Arizona Republic. “We had a lot of guys sick from the trip and just the travel. A lot of guys are kind of banged up.”

With the Suns missing so many key pieces, Devin Booker played a career-high 46 minutes on Monday. Watson said he’s fine playing him so many minutes.

“It’s more of just who he’s going to be in our league,” Watson told the Republic. “He’s a player who needs to play most of the game. He’s young. He can recover quickly and he’s playing great, so he needs to be on the court more.”

The NBA returns to Mexico City for the third consecutive year Thursday night when the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns duel for the second time in eight days.

The game will represent the 25th anniversary of NBA games in Mexico City, with the Mavericks having teamed with the Houston Rockets to play the first, a preseason game in 1992.

Since then, one game (San Antonio vs. Minnesota) was cancelled due to smoke in the Mexico City Arena, but the action picked up again on Nov. 12, 2014, when the Rockets returned to defeat the Timberwolves 113-103 in a regular-season game.

Last season, the Boston Celtics beat the Sacramento Kings 114-97 south of the border.

This year, the NBA has scheduled two games for Mexico City. The Suns will play “host” to them both, with the Spurs facing Phoenix on Saturday night.

“We’re very much looking forward to this experience,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said at practice Wednesday. “The people are delightful; the arena is beautiful. I think this will be a close game.”

One of the great unknowns is the effect of the altitude in the Mexican capital, which stands at 7,200 feet above sea level. Denver, at 5,200 feet, has the highest altitude on the regular NBA trail.

The Suns prevailed at sea level last Thursday thanks to better 3-point shooting. Phoenix connected on 7 of 17 (41.2 percent) in the 102-95 win, while Dallas struggled through a 9-for-29 night (31 percent).

The fact that the game was decided from beyond the arc was no surprise. The Mavericks (40.3 percent) and Suns (38.2 percent) rank last and second to last, respectively, in the league in defending the 3-pointer.

Suns center Tyson Chandler, whose international experience includes winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics, hopes the clubs can put on a show and maybe make some new fans.

“You never know who’s watching; you never know what kid is going to have a spark in his brain that’s going to push him to try and make it to our league one day,” Chandler said Wednesday, according to the Arizona Republic. “I feel like that’s why the Dirk (Nowitzkis) and Tony Parkers and Pau Gasols and Marc Gasols and all the other foreign players we have, I think it all came from the Barcelona trip back in the (1992) Olympics. A lot of kids watched that, and all of a sudden, years later we had a flood of Europeans.

“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase.”

The NBA will be showcasing the teams with the two worst records in the Western Conference, the 12-26 Suns and the 11-27 Mavericks. However, the records didn’t stop the clubs from playing an exciting contest last week, a game that wasn’t decided until Suns guard Eric Bledsoe scored seven of his 26 points in the final two minutes to help Phoenix gain an edge.

The Mavericks had won four in a row in the rivalry before last week’s defeat.

A matchup with the Mavericks means a bit of a reunion for Suns coach Earl Watson, 37. In a 13-year NBA career that ended in 2014, Watson was teammates with three current Dallas players — starting guards Deron Williams (one season with the Mavericks) and Wesley Matthews (one season with the Portland Trail Blazers), and backup Devin Harris (two seasons with the Mavericks).

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors showed their vulnerability when they dropped a 132-127 double-overtime thriller to the Houston Rockets on Thursday night.

Unfortunately for Saturday’s opponent, the Phoenix Suns, now the Warriors get another opportunity to demonstrate their invincibility.

Golden State will put its NBA-record streak of not having lost consecutive regular-season games (105) on the line Saturday when they face the Suns for the third time this season.

The Warriors have lost only three times this season. The first two times, they rebounded with 122-114 and 116-106 victories, both over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The last time Golden State had a two-game losing streak was April 5-7, 2015. They’ve played the Suns six times since then, and won all six.

But the most recent win didn’t come easy.

In fact, the Suns led 111-106 in the fourth quarter in Oakland before Klay Thompson buried a pair of 3-pointers and three free throws during a 27-9 finish that produced a 133-120 victory.

That was Golden State’s fourth straight win after its Nov. 4 loss to the Los Angeles. The Warriors extended that winning streak to 12 games before Thursday’s nail-biter.

The Nov. 13 win over Phoenix also extended the Warriors’ streak of regular-season games without consecutive losses to 96, breaking the record of 95 that was set by the Utah Jazz bridging the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

“It’s really a remarkable achievement,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said at the time. “Everybody is going to lose games in this league. How you respond to those losses says a lot about your team.”

The Suns responded well to a two-game home losing streak with an impressive 109-107 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

Phoenix once again demonstrated an improved defense in the win. Once statistically the worst defense in the league, the Suns allowed 107 or fewer points for the fifth time in their last seven games, a stretch during which their league ranking has improved two spots.

If the Suns are concerned about an aspect of their game now, it’s ball distribution. Phoenix actually had more turnovers (17) than assists (15) in the Atlanta win.

Now they’re up against arguably the best passing team in the NBA. While the Suns rank second-to-last in the league in assists per game (18.3), the Warriors are first (31.3).

In fact, Golden State recorded 30 or more assists in 10 straight games earlier this season, just three off the NBA record of 13 in a row.

The Suns haven’t had a single game higher than 27 this season. In fact, they’ve failed to accumulate even 20 assists in 12 of their 19 games.

“We have to play more team basketball,” Suns veteran Jared Dudley expressed to reporters at practice Friday. “We have to average 18 to 20 assists to give us a chance, because right now we’re not a great shooting team.”

The Warriors have held 27-19 and 32-27 assist advantages over the Suns in the two earlier meetings this season.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns

The slumping Atlanta Hawks will seek to avoid a winless Western swing Wednesday night they visit the Phoenix Suns.

What began as a reasonable trip — matchups with the Utah Jazz, the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix, with the powerful Golden State Warriors interspersed — turned into a bit of a nightmare after 27- and 15-point drubbings at the hands of the Jazz and Lakers.

Hawks players held a no-coaches meeting in Los Angeles, and it apparently made a positive impact. They led at Golden State for the better part of three periods Monday night before falling just short at the end, 105-100.

Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer applauded the players’ meeting.

“If they want to talk and hammer some things out, that’s usually a good thing,” the longtime San Antonio Spurs assistant said Monday in Oakland.

Atlanta (10-8) lost six of its past seven after a 9-2 start despite strong play by veteran big man Dwight Howard.

The NBA’s career leader among active players in rebounds and blocked shots had a 14-point, 16-rebound performance at Golden State.

Three games earlier, he led a win over the Indiana Pacers with 23 points and 20 rebounds, the 46th 20-20 game of his career.

Howard figures to get some resistance Wednesday night from fellow veteran Tyson Chandler, who had a big game of his own — 10 points, 15 rebounds — his last time out, Sunday against the Denver Nuggets.

Chandler missed eight of the Suns’ previous 10 games while dealing with the death of his mother earlier this month.

Howard (12.8 rebounds per game) and Chandler (12.0) rank third and fifth, respectively, in the league on the boards this season.

A matchup with the Suns might be just what the doctor ordered for the Hawks. Phoenix (5-13) has the second-worst record in the West and is coming off a 120-114 home loss to Denver.

Point guard Eric Bledsoe poured in a career-best 35 points in the defeat, but he faces a stiffer challenge Wednesday in Hawks counterpart Dennis Schroder.

Atlanta’s first-year starter not only contributed a team-high 24 points to the loss at Golden State, but he also helped harass Warriors star Stephen Curry into 6-of-17 shooting.

While Schroder was too quick at times for Curry, he will have to deal with Suns guard Devin Booker on Wednesday.

As Schroder did with Curry, Booker accepts the challenge to be as good on the defensive end as on offense.

“If you want to be great, that’s the role you’ve got to take on,” Booker, addressing the media at practice Tuesday, said of being a defensive stopper. “You’ve got to be a two-way player. All the great players in the league are two-way players.”

When the Hawks last saw the Suns, they couldn’t handle Booker on the offensive end. Booker had 34 points, his second-best output as a rookie, when the Suns lost at Atlanta last April.

Booker has four 30-point games this season, including one Sunday in the loss to Denver, giving him a total of 10 in his career.

Jermaine O’Neal had 22 points and 13 rebounds, Wesley Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime and the Phoenix Suns rallied to upend San Antonio 105-101, stunning a raucous crowd that had begun celebrating midway through the third quarter only to exit in silence.

Tony Parker had 22 points to lead San Antonio, which had not lost at home since Nov. 19 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Tim Duncan had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and DeJuan Blair and Kawhi Leonard added 15 points apiece.

Luis Scola added 15 points and Goran Dragic had 13 points and 13 assists for Phoenix, which snapped a six-game losing streak against the Spurs.

“We are all very upset, especially after the performance we had on the road,” San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. “Coming back home and losing the first one is hard, but it happens. We got relaxed after such a long road trip, but this is what happens in the NBA when you do not play your best.”

After going 7-2 on the road trip due to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the league-leading Spurs (45-14) appeared to have the game well in hand following a strong third quarter by Parker.

Amid cries of “MVP,” Parker had 10 points in the period as San Antonio extended its lead to double digits. His assist to Duncan with 10 minutes left in the third gave the Spurs a 56-45 lead and his 10-foot jumper put them up 69-58.

Leonard’s 3 with 1.1 seconds gave San Antonio a 77-67 lead entering the fourth.

Trailing by 11 points with 11:29 left in the game, the Suns rallied behind O’Neal. The veteran center had 13 points and five rebounds as Phoenix (20-39) outscored San Antonio 33-23 in the fourth.

“For us, we’re obviously not in the playoff run, but it’s about trying to be a better team,” O’Neal said. “Games like these are what build character and put us in the right direction. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

The Suns pulled within 97-95 with less than a minute remaining on Marcus Morris’ 3. Parker attempted to keep the Spurs ahead, tossing in a floater, a jump shot and feeding Duncan for a jumper that gave San Antonio a 99-97 lead with 11 seconds left.

Ginobili made one of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left to make it 100-97. O’Neal rebounded Ginobili’s second free throw attempt, firing a pass down court to Johnson, whose 3 at the buzzer tied the game at 100 and sent it to overtime.

“Overall we made a lot of mental errors,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Especially on that last play on the free throw line when Johnson went all the way down the court and he wasn’t picked up. That cost us the game.”

Johnson’s 3 seemed to stun the Spurs even more so than the fans.

“I think we were kind of surprised that Manu missed that last free throw, but they made a great play,” Parker said. “Wesley made a big 3.”

San Antonio went 0-for-10 in overtime, its only points in the extra period coming when Parker made 1 of 2 free throws.

“I think they missed some shots they normally make, so defensively we did some things great that worked great for us,” Phoenix coach Lindsey Hunter said.

The teams combined to go 0-for-14 to open overtime. Marcin Gortat’s tip follow was the first basket of overtime, giving Phoenix a 102-101 lead with 1:07 left.

After three weeks on the road, the Spurs were finally able to honor Parker as the NBA Player of the Month for January, doing so prior to the game. … San Antonio observed a moment of silence in honor of Dr. Jerry Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers owner who died Feb. 18. … The Spurs have won 64 games overall on its rodeo road trips, which began in 2003. … A video highlighting the Spurs’ recent road trip played prior to the game to Phillip Phillips’ “Home.” … Dragic and reigning MVP LeBron James of Miami are the only players leading their team in points, assists, steals and free throw attempts. … Scola, Gortat and Markieff Morris have played all 58 games for Phoenix, with Gortat starting each.

Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday night that the Kings have agreed to send Robinson to the Houston Rockets along with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt in exchange for Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas. USA Today reported that the Kings, in the process of being sold, also received $1 million in the transaction.

In advance of Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, Houston also is dealing forward Marcus Morris to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a second-round draft pick in June, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard.

Morris, averaging 8.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in Houston, will join his twin brother, Markieff Morris, in Phoenix.

The Kings will raise eyebrows by giving up so soon on such a high pick, but the move saves more than $3 million in payroll this season and reunites star forward DeMarcus Cousins with Patterson, his former Kentucky teammate.

Patterson, Aldrich and Douglas walked out of the Toyota Center just as Houston was starting its game against Oklahoma City on Wednesday night. The Rockets came into the game holding the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference and the moves were unexpected.

The 6-foot-9 Patterson had started 38 games for Houston this season and was the Rockets’ fourth-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points. Douglas was acquired in the offseason in a trade with New York and played in 49 games backing up Jeremy Lin. The 6-11 Aldrich, acquired in the James Harden trade with Oklahoma City just before the season, averaged 1.7 points in 30 games for Houston this season.

Sacramento had high hopes for the 6-10 Robinson, but he’s disappointed so far, averaging only 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.

Kings general manager Geoff Petrie had hinted that he’d only make minor moves before the trade deadline because of the pending purchase agreement that could move the franchise to Seattle next season.

Marcus Morris was all smiles about the deal on Wednesday night, even though the Suns entered their game against Golden State with the worst record in the West (18-36).

“It’s my first trade,” Morris said. “All I kept hearing was, it’s a business. It happens. I mean, it does happen. I’m excited to see where my career can go from here.

Suns coach Lindsey Hunter wouldn’t talk about the deal specifically, but acknowledged that Phoenix is building for the future.

“We’re trying to get better,” he said. “We’re trying to build a foundation of something that we hope will last.”
