The Phillies were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, capped by an 8-0 setback, and acquired veteran outfielder Jay Bruce to add some punch to their bench Sunday.

“I get to go somewhere I have a chance to win, and at this point in my career, that’s pretty paramount for me,” Bruce, who was batting .212 with 14 homers with Seattle, told mlb.com. “. … I look forward to going over there and helping the Phillies hopefully win a championship. Hunter Renfroe provided all of the offense with two homers in the latest loss for San Diego and is 4-for-9 with three blasts and four RBIs in the past three games while teammate Manny Machado is mired in a 0-for-12 slump with six strikeouts.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (6-0, 4.18 ERA) vs. Padres LH Eric Lauer (4-4, 4.45)

Nola was 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA in May and the Phillies earned the victory in all six of his starts after they were losers in four of the 25-year-old’s five outings during April. The LSU product limited St. Louis to one run on four hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts Wednesday to win his third straight start and seventh in a row, dating back to 2018. Renfroe is 3-for-5 with two doubles versus Nola, who blanked the Padres over six innings in a win last year.

Lauer has won his last two starts in impressive fashion while permitting two runs on eight hits over 12 1/3 innings combined with 11 strikeouts and zero walks. The 23-year-old Kent State product, who had gone six starts without a win before the last two, has been much better at home (2-2, 2.67 ERA) than on the road (2-2, 6.84). The 2016 first-round pick has walked only 14 batters across 58 2/3 innings as he prepares to face the Phillies for the first time.

Monday would have been CC Sabathia’s slot, but the veteran lefty hit the injured list with a knee injury last week. Right-hander David Hale, who allowed one run in four innings of relief last Tuesday at Baltimore, is a candidate to start the series opener. New York also has not named a starter for Wednesday’s contest but it hopes to get lefty James Paxton (knee) back for that one after he successfully went through a workout Sunday.

The hype train was churning at full steam last month when the Toronto Blue Jays called up Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the top prospect in baseball. San Diego has a pretty fair rookie of its own in right-hander Chris Paddack, who entered the weekend with the third-lowest ERA in the majors and will take the mound as the Padres go for a three-game sweep in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.

While Paddack has been a revelation for San Diego, the offense has earned the headlines versus the Blue Jays by mashing 10 homers, including a franchise-record seven in Saturday’s 19-4 romp that pushed the team’s winning streak to five games. Austin Hedges broke open Saturday’s matchup with a grand slam – his second homer in as many days – and Hunter Renfroe went deep twice among his four hits to give him three blasts and six RBIs in the series. While the Padres came up one run shy of tying the club record, Toronto has been outscored 39-14 during a four-game slide to fall to 6-18 in its last 24 contests. Justin Smoak has homered in three of the past four games and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went deep for the second straight day for the Blue Jays, who will take a 9-18 home record into the series finale.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Chris Paddack (4-2, 1.93 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (2-6, 2.81)

Paddack bounced back from his worst start of the season with a superb effort last time out, beating Arizona on Monday by striking out seven and permitting one run along with five hits over six innings. Not only is he holding opposing batters to a .156 average, but the 23-year-old has the lowest ERA through his first nine starts of any pitcher in franchise history. Paddack, who has registered 56 strikeouts against only 11 walks over 51 1/3 innings, has made four road starts and is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA.

Stroman earned his first victory in more than a month Tuesday, overcoming a season-worst six walks to limit Boston to one run and five hits over six innings. That ended a five-start winless drought for the former first-round draft pick, who also turned in a strong effort in his previous outing with six innings of two-run ball (one earned) in a no-decision at the Chicago White Sox. Eric Hosmer is 4-for-11 against Stroman, who is 1-4 in seven starts at Rogers Centre despite a stellar 2.43 ERA.

Senzatela is looking to bounce back after allowing seven runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s 14-4 loss to San Francisco. The 24-year-old Venezuelan has struggled in two starts at home this season, going 0-2 with a 9.28 ERA. Myers is 6-for-15 with a home run against Senzatela, who owns a 5-1 record and 3.18 ERA in 11 career games (five starts) versus San Diego – including a 5-2 victory in his season debut on April 15.

The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their lead in the National League West reduced by a game after losing the opener of their three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
