San Francisco 49ers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Oddsmakers currently have the Falcons listed as 13½-point favorites versus the 49ers, while the game’s total is sitting at 50.

The Atlanta Falcons sit in the driver’s seat in the NFC South and, with a favorable schedule in final three weeks, are very much in the mix for a first-round playoff bye.

But they need to get healthy ahead of the playoffs.

The banged-up Falcons (8-5) kick off their closing stretch Sunday, when the lowly San Francisco 49ers (1-12) visit the Georgia Dome for the final time. This is the last season for the Falcons in the dome, before moving down the block to their new stadium for the 2017 season.

Seven Falcons sat out Wednesday’s practice, including superstar wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones missed last week’s road win over the Los Angeles Rams with a toe injury.

Atlanta coach Dan Quinn on Wednesday re-classified Jones’ injury as a sprained toe. Quinn had initially described the injury as turf toe, which could have lingered much longer than the sprain is expected to.

“We’ll get him back here shortly,” Quinn said of Jones. “When he can explode like he does…the good news is it’s not something that’s going to be a long-term thing.”

Atlanta’s second-leading receiver Mohamed Sanu, who also missed last week’s game with a groin injury, returned to practice Wednesday. But defensive end Adrian Clayborn (knee), cornerback Jalen Collins (knee) and safety Kemal Ismael (shoulder) were among those who sat out Wednesday’s practice.

The 49ers are battling their own injuries, with left tackle Joe Staley (hamstring) and receiver Torrey Smith (concussion) both sitting out Wednesday’s practice. Staley had started 92 consecutive regular season games, before missing last week’s loss to the New York Jets. Smith is in the league’s concussion protocol and still needs to be cleared before taking the field again.

Even if the 49ers were at full-strength, they’d be hard-pressed to keep up with the Falcons, who boast the league’s most prolific offense, led by quarterback Matt Ryan, an MVP candidate. Ryan has already thrown for more than 4,000 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He threw three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Rams.

“Matt’s one of those quarterbacks that transcends any system,” San Francisco coach Chip Kelly told reporters Wednesday. “It doesn’t matter, I really don’t think, what system he’s running. Although, the one he’s running right now he’s very, very successful in. I think he fits very well into what (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan) is doing. But he’s had a couple different coordinators and been successful with whoever was coaching him. That’s just the type of player he is. I think he’s an elite quarterback.”

Despite missing Jones and Sanu, the Falcons put up 42 points in last week’s win over the Rams. The 49ers have scored a total of 47 points in their last three games combined.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday against Atlanta. Kaepernick has completed 54.8 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions, since taking over as the starter for Blaine Gabbert in Week 6.

“I think Colin has gotten better each week with us,” Kelly said. “The more comfortable he gets in our system, the more comfortable we are around him. … We’ve been pleased with Colin.”

Kaepernick has yet to lead a victory this season, though. Last week, San Francisco jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter against the Jets, but was held scoreless in the second half and lost their 12th straight game, despite a 193-yard rushing performance from Carlos Hyde.

“Once again, it comes down to our execution,” Kaepernick said. “We have to be able to make plays and we didn’t make enough in the second half to put points on the board.”

The Falcons lead the surging Tampa Bay Buccaneers by one game in the NFC South and are within a game of the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions in the battle for the second seed in the NFC.

After Sunday’s game against the 49ers, the Falcons close out the regular season at the Carolina Panthers and at home against the New Orleans Saints. Atlanta’s three remaining opponents are a combined 11-28.

“Who we’re playing and where we’re playing — that’s kind of irrelevant, so to speak, because you want to just go and battle for it,” Quinn said. “(That’s) the intent of the players, that’s what we’re set out to do.”

Now, Bowles looks to save his job as New York, which still ranks fourth in the NFL defending the rush (90.3 yards a game), appeared to have quit defensively in last week’s nationally televised game. Andrew Luck threw four touchdown passes and the Colts ran up 421 yards before taking their foot off the gas early in the second half. New York is also battling a slew of injuries as center Nick Mangold is gone for the season, tackle Breno Giacomini and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson missed practice time during the week and safety Calvin Pryor remains questionable with a concussion.

Among the worst they’ve ever been when all that winning from just a few years back is still so fresh. Oh, and the Oakland Raiders are running through the AFC.

After an impressive shutout of the Rams in the season opener lifted spirits for a turnaround following two straight seasons out of the playoffs, San Francisco has lost a franchise-worst 10 in a row.

So, who’s got it better than us? (Almost) every-body!

”I just feel like every team circles us on their calendar,” Eli Harold said recently. ”We can’t be the target. We can’t be a laughingstock.”

Fans have taken to social media begging for emotional, hard-nosed Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to come back. Hey, even one-and-done Jim Tomsula sounds like a better alternative to some – he won five games last year, after all.

CEO Jed York never saw this kind of losing and embarrassment coming for his once-proud franchise. He had high hopes of immediately contending again when he hired a big name in Chip Kelly nearly 11 months ago.

”He’s going to be able to take us to where we want to go,” York promised at the time.

Instead, there is little to cheer for in Kelly’s first year; the embarrassment of a half-empty home stadium many Sundays; and infuriated fans who have simply had enough and are choosing to spend their hard-earned money anywhere but $1.3 billion, third-year Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco is worst in the NFC, and only ahead of winless Cleveland in the entire NFL. Quite a valley for an organization that reached three straight NFC title games from 2011-13.

Only adding to the pain is the other team in their market, AFC West-leading Oakland , is one of the NFL’s best stories.

Next up for the Niners (1-10) is a game at Chicago (2-9) this Sunday after a week spent practicing in Orlando rather than returning to the West Coast following a loss at Miami.

Kelly expects his players to keep fighting to finish this season as well as could be imagined given the historic struggles.

”They’re professionals and I think they’re all competitors, so I don’t know what they’d gain from packing it in. Is that going to make them feel better?” Kelly said. ”They want to straighten this thing out, so they’re going to go out and compete and we’ve got a bunch of competitors in there that want to go win. I don’t want anybody to pat them on the back and tell them that: `Hey, you did a good job. You were close.’ They’re grown men, they want to win and they’ll continue to work that way.”

Oh what they would do for the Candlestick Park glory days of Joe Montana to Dwight Clark or Steve Young beautifully finding Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott landing a crushing, game-changing hit. Five Super Bowl titles under newly enshrined Hall of Famer Edward DeBartolo Jr.

”I feel very bad for what they’re going through,” DeBartolo said, ”but they’ll definitely come out of it.”

The lost season could lead to the dismissal of Kelly or general manager Trent Baalke – maybe even both, though that would be a lot of money for York to commit to paying out given Tomsula still had his salary on the books when he was dismissed. Then, the daunting idea of both a GM and coaching search – again.

Or, they both could stay. York’s plans are anybody’s guess.

Four months ago, Baalke acknowledged the need to win for his own job security.

”If you’re in the National Football League, you’re on the hot seat. Sometimes it’s a little hotter than others,” he said. ”This is a performance-based business. You’re here to win. I always look at it like that. I don’t ever look at it any other way.”

It’s worth noting that mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick is making just enough strides and big plays in his comeback from three surgeries to land himself a solid opportunity elsewhere. That could mean the Niners would get none of the long-term benefits of his development. Or he might opt to stay put where he’s comfortable and accepted .

Then there’s the draft, on which Baalke noted, ”We certainly have had some misses.”

San Francisco had 12 arrests or charges filed involving seven players from January 2012 to Aldon Smith’s August 2015 release. York vowed his franchise would ”win with class,” and now the Niners are being ultra-cautious and trying to select only who they believe to be high-character guys.

Baalke’s choices since being put in charge of the draft have been questioned , along with why he wasn’t more proactive in free agency this year.

”Let’s face it, you’ve got to develop players. You’ve got to draft well and you’ve got to develop well, and it takes both sides,” Baalke said before the season began. ”It works in unison. You bring young guys, you understand, and we’ve talked about this, this is a developmental league in a lot of aspects. These guys are coming into the league younger than ever, less experienced than ever. … So there’s a lot of things in play and you’ve got to be very good at both.”

Amid the losing, Kelly has rarely strayed from the company line.

”They’ve practiced great all year long. They’ve had great attitudes in terms of what they’ve got to do when we go out to the practice field, and I don’t think that’s in anybody’s mindset (to give up),” he said. ”I think it is questions that are asked from the outside, but there’s never been a question about that from the inside.”

The questions from outside come with the territory when you’re this bad and the big-name new coach is earning $6 million annually over four years, paid in part by his former Eagles team.

DeBartolo spoke with his nephew, York, during his visit to receive his Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence at halftime against New England on Nov. 20.

”He has some difficult changes and moves that he must make to turn this franchise around,” DeBartolo said in an email to The Associated Press. ”I believe he knows what needs to be done.”

The Miami Dolphins turned their season around with a five-game winning streak and are in the mix for an AFC playoff berth.

The San Francisco 49ers haven’t registered a victory since Sept. 12 and are hoping to avoid a new low in franchise futility.

It’s a tale of two teams heading in different directions as San Francisco attempts to sidestep a franchise-record 10th consecutive defeat when it visits the streaking Dolphins on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, FOX).

The 49ers (1-9) were victorious in Chip Kelly’s debut as coach but the season quickly unraveled. San Francisco gave up a combined 83 points over its next two games and allowed an average of 34.8 points during the nine-game skid.

The run of defeats matches the 1978 49ers for the club’s worst stretch of single-season setbacks. But quarterback Colin Kaepernick is putting on the brave face and citing that all is not lost.

Miami (6-4) feared its own dreadful campaign when it opened the season with four defeats in five games under first-year coach Adam Gase.

The Dolphins then tinkered with the offense and began feeding the football to second-year running back Jay Ajayi. They haven’t lost since and stand one game behind the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs for the final AFC wild-card spots.

Ajayi rushed for 685 yards during the winning streak — including topping 200 yards in consecutive games — and suddenly ranks tied for sixth in the NFL with 802 yards.

The emerging star nicknamed the “J-Train” could be in for another big game Sunday as San Francisco ranks last in the NFL in rushing defense at 179.5 yards per game.

Perhaps the bigger element in terms of slowing down Ajayi might be the health of his own offensive line.

Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey (hip), Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert (wrist) and standout rookie guard Laremy Tunsil (shoulder) all missed the second half of last Sunday’s 14-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Tunsil is considered to have a good chance of playing against San Francisco, while Pouncey and Albert are in jeopardy of missing the contest.

Meanwhile, quarterback Ryan Tannehill has adapted to Gase’s run-based approach and has thrown for six touchdowns against one interception during the winning streak.

“His offense is really fun to play in, does a lot of things to help a quarterback,” Tannehill said on a conference call. “Just his knowledge — being around all the quarterbacks he has — he’s learned so much and can help you in so many ways.”

Interestingly, Gase was close to a deal to become the 49ers coach following the 2014 season but San Francisco decided to hire Jim Tomsula.

Tomsula went 5-11 in one season before being fired while Gase became the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. He cites the interview experience with the 49ers as a big help toward landing the Miami gig this past winter.

“It made it so much easier for myself when I went through that next round the year afterwards to know what to expect and understand the process of that second interview,” Gase said on a conference call.

Instead, it is Kelly dealing with San Francisco’s situation and another hit occurred this week when free safety Eric Reid underwent season-ending surgery for a torn bicep suffered in Sunday’s 30-17 loss to the New England Patriots.

Reid (81 tackles) will be replaced by second-year pro Jaquiski Tartt on the unit that ranks last in the NFL in both scoring defense (31.3) and total defense (431.3 yards per game).

The 49ers also rank near the bottom of the league in total offense (30th at 309.6) while averaging 20.4 points per game. Kelly committed toward Kaepernick as the starting quarterback for the rest of this season and promises that his squad hasn’t quit.

“They practice well, they want to win, they’re engaged,” Kelly said. “They’re not excited about where we are now in terms of what we’ve done win-loss wise. We’ve got to go back to work. That’s the only thing you can do in this situation.”

Miami defensive end Cameron Wake, who has a team-leading 7 1/2 sacks, had a big outing in 2012 when the Dolphins and 49ers last met. Wake recorded three sacks and a forced fumble but San Francisco prevailed 27-13.

Tomsula was particularly thrilled with what he saw from Colin Kaepernick, although the quarterback’s statistics (165 yards passing, 41 rushing) don’t exactly jump off the page. “I don’t think we had something that was broke,” Tomsula said of the 27-year-old Kaepernick. “He’s a very talented athlete. He’s a very talented quarterback. He’s got a skill set, we just want to utilize his skill set.” Vernon Davis, who reeled in three receptions for 47 yards, will look to exploit a Pittsburgh defense that was gashed for three touchdowns by fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski of the Patriots.

San Francisco won its last outing, a 20-3 result against the Vikings on September 14. The 49ers covered in that game as a +3-point underdog, while the 23 combined points took the game UNDER the total.
