Tom Brady’s arrival led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to believe their long playoff drought might end this season.

That dream could come to fruition as early as Saturday, when the Bucs visit Detroit.

A victory would clinch a playoff berth with one more game to go. So would a Chicago loss or tie to Jacksonville.

The Bucs (9-5) are also still in the running for an NFC South Division title. While the Bucs trail the Saints (10-4) by a game, if the teams finished tied, the Saints would win the tiebreaker since they beat Tampa Bay twice in the regular season.

The last time the Bucs reached the postseason was 2007, when they lost to the New York Giants in the wild-card round.

“I call them a hat and T-shirt games,” coach Bruce Arians said. “This is a hat and T-shirt game. You get a hat and a T-shirt when you’re in the playoffs. It’s a great feeling for these guys. That was the goal this year — it was to get in The Dance and anything can happen once you’re in there. But get ourselves in The Dance and we have that opportunity on (Saturday).”

A Brady-fueled comeback on Sunday put the Bucs on the brink of a postseason berth. Tampa Bay trailed Atlanta 17-0 at halftime but roared back for a 31-27 triumph. Brady threw for 390 yards and two touchdowns.

He needs 114 passing yards on Saturday to reach the 4,000-yard mark for the season. Brady will be making his 300th career regular-season appearance.

With Ronald Jones placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and also recovering from finger surgery, Leonard Fournette served as the main running back against the Falcons. He rushed for 49 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.

“I thought it was fine,” Arians said of the running game. “When we wanted to run, we were successful. We pounded it in twice at the goal line and ran out the clock at the end of the game. In between, it was hit or miss. Just enough to keep the play action really good.”

The pass defense was subpar, as it allowed 332 yards. The Bucs also failed to force a turnover.

“Our defense needs to reevaluate themselves a little bit and get back to what we’re supposed to be doing and what we’re capable of doing,” Arians said.

The Lions (5-9) have allowed 30 or more points in each of their last four games. Their decimated defense was gouged for 463 yards in a 46-25 loss to Tennessee on Sunday.

Matthew Stafford played despite a rib injury and threw for 252 yards and a touchdown before he was replaced late in the game by Chase Daniel.

“He was sore coming out of the game. He did take a couple of hits in that game,” interim coach Darrell Bevell said. “He’s as tough as they come, tough as nails.”

The Lions are out of the playoff picture, but Stafford isn’t interested in sitting out the last two games if he feels he can play.

“To be honest with you, I don’t think he’ll let that happen,” Bevell said. “These guys are true competitors. There’s a sense of pride that you need to be there, you want to be there for your teammates.”

Detroit was forced to close its practice facility on Tuesday after two members of the organization tested positive for the coronavirus. Bevell isn’t sure how much the team will be allowed to practice this week.

“Just got to play that by ear,” he said.

Back from a knee injury that derailed most of his 2018 season, Jimmy Garoppolo enters a crucial year under center for the San Francisco 49ers, who open play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. After going 5-0 as a starter with the Niners in 2017 and then signing a $137.5 million deal prior to last season, Garoppolo played in just three games before tearing the ACL on his left knee, crushing San Francisco’s hopes for a rise up the NFC West standings.

“That is what it is, and now he’s done the work to be healthy, but Jimmy hasn’t played a lot of football,” coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. “Everyone knows he’s a good player and knows he’s talented, but we’ve got to go through some situations and go through playing the position. I’m just so pumped that he’s healthy again.” The Niners went 3-10 without Garoppolo to finish out of the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year but hope that a full season of health for the 27-year-old signal-caller can turn things around. ABOUT THE 49ERS (2018: 4-12, 3RD IN NFC WEST): While Garoppolo’s comeback is drawing plenty of attention, San Francisco also hopes to put opposing quarterbacks under severe pressure with a revamped defensive unit featuring newly signed edge rusher Dee Ford and No. 2 overall pick Nick Bosa. Ford had 13 sacks with Kansas City a year ago before signing with the Niners while Bosa, who is battling an ankle injury, was a standout at Ohio State. The Tampa Bay Rays are stinging the ball during a stretch of five wins in six games, bringing the team a season-best 13 games over .500. The Rays will try to keep the hits coming and earn another series win when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay (32-19) has scored at least six runs in each of the last five wins and leadoff man Austin Meadows sparked the offense the last two days while going 7-for-9 with two homers and six RBIs, lifting his batting average to .351 and slugging percentage to .679. “Meadows has been incredible,” Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters after Monday’s win. “Had three hits and finished it off with a home run. Austin Meadows looks to follow his second four-hit performance of the season with another big effort when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday afternoon for the opener of their three-game series. The 24-year-old Meadows went 4-for-4 with a leadoff homer and three RBIs on Sunday to improve his batting average to .341 as the Rays knocked off Cleveland 6-3.

“He certainly looks locked in – hitting the ball the other way, hitting it out of the ballpark, pulling it down the right-field line,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash told reporters of Meadows, who went 5-for-12 with two homers in three games against Toronto last month. “He’s seeing the ball well, it seems like, every time he’s walked to the plate when he’s been healthy. …. He’s been huge for us.” Yonny Chirinos is expected to make the start Monday for the Rays, who are a season-high 12 games over .500, while the Blue Jays counter with Aaron Sanchez. Toronto took out its frustration from a four-game losing streak, during which the pitching staff gave up 39 runs, by rolling to a 10-1 victory over San Diego on Sunday as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered for the third straight day since being recalled. Sanchez is winless in five outings this month but posted two quality starts in that stretch after holding Boston to two runs over six innings of a no-decision on Wednesday. Rookie Brandon Lowe responded to a four-strikeout performance with a big offensive effort and hopes to build on that when the Tampa Bay Rays go for a series victory Sunday afternoon against the host Cleveland Indians. Lowe, who leads the team with 11 homers and 30 RBIs, had a run-scoring double to go along with a solo blast and a walk in Saturday’s 6-2 victory as the Rays won for the 17th time in 25 road games.

New York was rained out Monday and Tuesday but got a total of three home runs in Wednesday’s straight doubleheader from Gleyber Torres to go into the weekend with some momentum. “It’s really good,” Torres, who went 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI in two games against Tampa Bay last weekend, told reporters. “In a doubleheader, we felt really tired in the second game for sure, but you just focus and do the job to help the team. I think there’s no better feeling than when you do the job and you help your team.” The Rays are carrying their own momentum after posting a pair of shutout wins over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday and Wednesday to kick off the five-game road trip. Tampa Bay will try to keep the shutout streak alive with an opener starting in front of Yonny Chirinos on Friday while the Yankees counter with veteran left-hander CC Sabathia.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Yonny Chirinos (5-1, 3.61 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.26)

Chirinos could get the start or take on the bulk of the innings after Tampa Bay utilizes an opener. Chirinos made the start in four of his eight appearances and went at least five innings in six out those outings. The 25-year-old came out of the bullpen at home against New York on Saturday and surrendered two runs on four hits – one homer – while striking out a pair and earning the win.

Sabathia served up solo homers to Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz at Tampa Bay on Saturday but limited the damage to those two runs on three hits and four walks in five innings without factoring in the decision in a game the Yankees went onto lose 7-2. The veteran has yet to complete six innings in a start this season and was lifted after 76 pitches on Saturday. Sabathia is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts at home, striking out 13 in 15 total innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays 3B Yandy Diaz (ankle) left Wednesday’s game but told reporters that he would play Friday.

2. New York 3B Miguel Andujar (shoulder) is scheduled for season-ending surgery to repair a labrum tear.

3. Tampa Bay C Anthony Bemboom (knee) left Wednesday’s game and is heading to the injured list.
