NEW YORK (AP) Dagan Nelson has been hired as basketball coach at New York University, replacing the retiring Joe Nesci.
Nelson has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels, including a stint as an assistant with the Violets from 2000-02.
He was head coach at SUNY New Paltz from 2007-11, his only time leading a college program. Most recently, he coached an AAU program in Spartanburg, South Carolina. NYU announced his hiring on Thursday.
”He has the perfect blend of experience as a leader, coach and recruiter to take full advantage of the unique and exciting opportunities here at NYU,” athletic director Christopher Bledsoe said in a statement.
Nesci posted a 512-270 career record in 30 seasons and guided the Violets to the NCAA Division III championship game in the 1993-94 season.
