Virginia coach Tony Bennett has dismissed forward Austin Nichols from the basketball team.
The school announced the move Friday but did not give a specific reason for redshirt junior’s dismissal.
Bennett said it a release that it is a privilege to be a part of Virginia program ”and Austin has lost that privilege.” The coach added that Virginia has standards for its student-athletes and when those standards aren’t met, there are consequences and that ”this is the unfortunate consequence.”
Nichols, who transferred from Memphis and sat out last season per NCAA transfer requirements, was previously suspended for the Cavaliers’ two preseason scrimmages and the season opener at UNCG for a violation of team rules.
The 6-foot-9 Nichols scored 11 points and had three rebounds in his only appearance for the eighth-ranked Cavaliers.
