Virginia Tech has extended the contract of men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams through the 2022-23 season.
Athletic director Whit Babcock announced the extension Wednesday.
Williams has coached the Hokies for two seasons, and last year produced once of the best turnarounds in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Virginia Tech went from 11-22 overall and 2-16 in league play in Williams’ first season to 20-15 overall and 10-8 in the ACC last year.
The Hokies also beat a pair of top 10 teams – No. 4 Virginia and No. 7 Miami – and won a program-record six consecutive league games on their way to a spot in the National Invitation Tournament.
Last season also ended a string of four consecutive last-place finishes for the Hokies in league play.
Williams, who came to Virginia Tech after six seasons at Marquette, originally signed a seven-year contract.
If he remains at Virginia Tech through the life of his extension, he will make $3.3 million in the 2022-23 season.
”Coach Williams has made a positive impact on the culture of our basketball program at Virginia Tech in a very short time,” Babcock said in a release from the school. ”Just as importantly, he’s a teacher, an educator, and he’s served as an ambassador for Virginia Tech, not only on our campus and in Virginia, but also all across the country.”
The school also announced that Williams and his family have endowed two scholarships at the school, one to be awarded to a student at Virginia Tech with a disability and the other for a female student-athlete, preferably a minority who is also the first person in her family to pursue a college degree.
