Big Sky could have four Top 10 teamsBy CRAIG HALEY

(STATS) – The Big Sky Conference enjoyed an exceptional season last year when its tri-champions Eastern Washington, UC Davis and Weber State reached at least the FCS playoff quarterfinals and finished in the top seven of the national rankings.

Montana State, which also won a playoff game, may be ready to join the trio in this year’s Top 10, and a quirk in the Big Sky schedule could allow for it to happen even though that sounds like a lot of teams from one conference.

The 13-team Big Sky uses an unbalanced schedule in which its members play eight conference games and miss the four other opponents. This year, there are only two games between last year’s four playoff qualifiers – UC Davis hosts Weber State on Oct. 26 and Montana State on Nov. 16. Eastern Washington, the 2018 national runner-up, isn’t playing the other three after playing all of them last season.

All four powers already are strong enough talent-wise, but the scenario could be alarming to the other Big Sky members, including the likes of Idaho State, Montana and Northern Arizona, heading toward the conference schedule.
