(STATS) – Washington State coach Mike Leach and his program never forgot Gage Gubrud’s first career start at Eastern Washington, so they’re happy to welcome the quarterback into the Cougars program,
Gubrud won an appeal for a sixth year of eligibility and will spend his final season at Washington State as a graduate transfer. He will be enrolled for the spring semester, participate in spring practice and compete to replace last year’s starter, Gardner Minshew, who also was a graduate transfer.
“We are excited for Gage to come in and compete with the quarterbacks on our team,” Leach said. “He is an extremely experienced and productive player who led Eastern Washington to great heights in his time there. It’s not often that you can add a quarterback to your roster that has started 28 games and thrown for nearly 10,000 yards. We are looking forward to getting him on campus and finishing his collegiate career in a WSU Cougar uniform.”
In Eastern Washington’s season-opening game in 2016, Gubrud collected what was then a school-record 551 yards of total offense as the Eagles defeated Washington State 45-42.
He went on to pass for an FCS single-season record 5,160 yards that season. In his career, he passed for 9,984 yards and had 11,026 yards of total offense and 100 total touchdowns. He was a two-time finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award.
Originally denied the extra season of eligibility, Gubrud won an appeal for his season-ending toe injury last fall. He played in five games, exceeding the NCAA’s four-game redshirt rule, but Eastern Washington went on to play 15 games by reaching the national championship game. A player can receive a medical redshirt if he’s played in one-third or fewer of his team’s games.
