(STATS) – The traditional hand-held cameras mounted on sideline and end zone lifts may someday become outdated at college football practices.
During Portland State’s preseason camp, team members are studying practice film provided by a pair of drones that are being flown above Stott Community Field.
Videographers Joey Hashimoto and Tyler Harman are using handheld controllers to shoot live video angles that they can frame on their phones while standing on the sidelines or next to the coaches.
“I like the NFL blimp view for my purposes,” coach Bruce Barnum said. “The other coaches like a little lower angle behind the play so they can see things like footwork.”
The drones can hover aloft in the traditional sideline/end zone formation, be set high or low, even move around to different drills at a range of 20 to 60 feet above the field.
“When the players watch it, it reminds them of playing (the video game) Madden NFL. They may actually process what they see even better,” tight ends coach AC Patterson said. “I guess we are just relating to the millennials.”
Portland State, an FCS playoff qualifier in 2015, was 0-11 last season, finishing last in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings will kick off their 2018 season at Nevada on Aug. 31.
