Jacksonville State yet to name season-opening QBBy CRAIG HALEY

(STATS) – Jacksonville State will have a mobile quarterback this season, but the announcement of who’s the season-opening starter is under wraps.

Coach John Grass said Monday the choice between Zerrick Cooper and Zion Webb will be announced Saturday before the sixth-ranked Gamecocks face No. 14 North Carolina A&T in the season-opening FCS Kickoff at Montgomery, Alabama.

“I will say that the room has some competition in it for sure,” Grass said. “They have done a good job and both of the guys have done a great job in their leadership and both are playmakers. Each one of them brings something different to the table and we won’t name a starter until we get on the field Saturday. You will see both play throughout the year and we are very comfortable with either one of them. Both can make plays because we see it every day in practice.”

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Cooper is a redshirt sophomore transfer from Clemson and the 6-foot, 200-pound Webb is a redshirt freshman who sat out last season while Jacksonville State went 10-2.

This is the second straight year in which the Gamecocks are playing in the FCS Kickoff. They beat Chattanooga 27-13 a year ago.

North Carolina A&T was 12-0 last season, winning the Celebration Bowl.
