Nevada coach fined $10K for 2 unsportsmanlike penalties

RENO, Nev. (AP) The Mountain West Conference has fined Nevada coach Brian Polian (POH’-lee-uhn) $10,000 after he was called for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during Saturday’s 44-20 loss to Arizona.

Nevada athletic director Doug Knuth (Newth) said Tuesday in a statement that any future offense will bring an automatic suspension and bigger fines.

League officials reprimanded Polian last year for criticizing the officiating after Nevada beat UNLV, and warned a second offense could mean stiffer penalties.

Polian said after Saturday’s game in Reno he was upset about an illegal formation call that wiped out a Nevada touchdown. He said he apologized to his team and Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez for his outburst, but won’t apologize for his passion for the game.

Knuth said regardless of who was right, Polian’s behavior is out of line with university standards.
