New coach Clark seeks to lift Robert Morris

(STATS) – Robert Morris announced the hiring of former Albany defensive coordinator Bernard Clark as the struggling program’s third head coach Tuesday.

It comes just over four weeks after John Banaszak stepped down following a 2-9 season. Clark will be formally introduced at a news conference on campus Wednesday.

Clark, 50, coached four years at Albany, including the last three as associate head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He’s a former linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks, and also has had coaching stops at Pittsburgh, James Madison, Liberty, Florida International, South Florida and Hampton.

“I’m very excited, and just a little bit nervous, about this opportunity to be a head coach for the first time,” Clark said. “But, mostly I’m excited. I look forward to working with the young men at Robert Morris and helping them grow in more ways than just as football players.”

Robert Morris won a share of the Northeast Conference title and was the conference’s first representative in the FCS playoffs in 2010, but hasn’t had a winning season since then. Banaszak replaced the retired Joe Walton after the 2013 season and went only 9-35 in four years.
